A Stressful Morning
Aubrey jerked awake, a peice of post-it note and a paperclip stuck to her cheek. She had stayed up so late in her office that she feel asleep. The couple of beers she had had earlier probably didn't help her sleepiness.
Sore and uncomfortable, she picked the supplied off her cheek and groaned as she sat up, feeling her back pop in complaint to the unnatural position it had been forced to stay in. She checked teh time and winced, standing up with a yawn to try and find some coffee. Her communicator was on the floor, probably having fallen there from vibrating, she figured, since she turned the ring off.
Something told her she would have hell to pay. Hopefully Moreau had cooled off a bit by now...? She clicked the cel-phone like device back to its normal setting and slipped it in her lab coat and decided to go scout for some coffee.
It started vibrating almost as soon as it dropped into her pocket. Moreau was sitting in the camera room with the lab technician just waiting for her to wake up. They needed to have a bit of a talk about a certain memo he'd recieved.
Aubrey blinked in surprise, then looked back at her office with a sinking feeling. The labs and offices she knew had cameras, but they weren't always on.. was he... watching her...
She swallowed and headed down to the kitchen, looking for that coffee. "Dr. Lockheart," she said, trying (and failing) to keep her voice from sounded too ragged.
"Aubrey, it's Nick. I need to see you immedietely. Meet me in my office, in an hour. That'll give you time to tidy yourself up a bit." Moreau sounded, irrate, not quite angry but defintly not in a good mood.
Of course. Aubrey sighed, not expected much better. "Yes sir," she said. At least he called himself Nick. Either that was a good sign or she was grasping at straws. She grabbed her coffee and headed to her room to change. She took a quick cold shower and changed into something professional.. but low cut. Play every card you had, right? Not that she figured it would do any good.
Taking one last deep breath, she headed into his office at least fifteen minutes early.
"Aubrey, good... your finally here. Contacting you has seemed infurating lately. How can you expect me to put up with that?" Moreau sighed and poured a cup of coffee and set it in front of her and one for himself.
"Now... we need to talk, about a certain chain of command that is supposed to exist here. Or am I mistaken?" Moreau sounded calm and calculating about this, normally not a good sign, if you knew him.
Aubrey did know, and the color drained from her face a bit, but she tried to remain calm, and just think -very carefully - about her words.
"I'm sorry, Nick," she started. "I feel asleep and the communicator was on my desk. Thats totally my fault, it won't happen again..."
She sat down slowly and sipped at the coffee, even though she was wide awake. "...you're not mistaken," she said softly, "I just was trying to diffuse a volitile situation..."
"One that was caused by disension... and all you did was do the same thing. I wanted all of those... things, destroyed. As an example to Sabin." Moreau tapped his fingers against the desk.
"What he did made me furious, do you have any idea how much money he spent on those stupid worthless... creatures?" Moreau sighed. "And now two of them are still alive... why? Because they are cute or something stupid like that?" Moreau was calm but sounding rather sarcastic at this point. "I expected more of you Aubrey."
Aubrey stayed rigid as a bored, her eyes darting around the room, focuses on Moreau's shoulder or mouth, but never his eyes. "I'm sorry, Nick... I figured, you know, being suspended and all was example enough. You know.. its his responsibility now. Maybe we can pull some new serums from it,yes? I mean, to be honest the lethal injections are kind of pricey, too, and if there was no reason..."
She realized that logic probably wouldn't get her anywhere. "I didn't trust Dr. Duvert not to do something ... stupid. He's got quite a lot of power here, you know. I was just trying to appease him. Giving him a stupid pet so he would calm down and not like.. I don't know. Give Billy back his drugs or so mething."
She twisted her labcoat in her lab. "And the dog was Vasile's. Sabin collected him during the lockout - it wasn't his to experiement on! Or even Feral Labs property. It was Vasiles, so I just said he should give it back. We can still use its blood - it was the actual legit experiement - remember! Three heads... we've never done a multiple head serum before..." She paused, gauging his reaction. "Yes yes, and that's admirable, if it'd been an authorized experiment." Moreau gritted his teeth, he was loathe to admit that Sabin's waste of materials had yealded anything worthwhile.
"But it's not that your decision was wrong, it's that it directly contridicted mine. Atleast that new girl, Robin, knows how to take orders." Moreau jabbed, pretending not to be obvious about it, he knew where to stick it to Aubrey and make it hurt.
Aubrey's heart skipped a beat. on a first name basis already?? She hadn't even met her. "I didn't know if you were ... aware that the dog belonged to Vasile," she feebly attempted.
Moreau glared a bit. "It really doesn't matter to me... he didn't keep a good eye on it. But that wasn't the only thing you did... the only one you kept."
"I thought you wanted to work here." Moreau half mumbled as he turned around towards the coffee machine to pour another glass. "H Woke Up Naked In A TREE, for goddsakes, Nicholas!" She shook her head. "It wasn't HIS fault it got lost, Sabin probably took it directly from his duplex - why should Vasile suffer because of Duvert's idiocity!?"
But then she stood up quickly, her eyes going wide. She could almost here Dr. Duvert saying 'i told you so' in her head. "How could you say that?? How could you think any different. What else do I have to to do to make you trust me, Nick? I've given you everything!"
"I'd like to believe that Aubrey." Moreau sipped the drink. "Of course, you've spent an increasing amount of time with that layabout William."
Aubrey nearly choked. "Excuse me?? BILLY?. oh please, the most time I've spent consecutively with him I was nearly castrating him. You can't be serious, Nick. He's ... he's disgusting. But that doesn't mean I can ignore my duty of keeping him in line."
"Well, that may be the case." Moreau's jelousy was obvious. "I just can't say the idea of you... around... him, makes me comfortable. He's a near rapist." Moreau's thick disgust for William was evident in his voice.
"You didn't even come back last night..." he turned around for another cup.
Aubrey's expression softened, touched by his concern. At least that what she interpreted it as. "And I'll buzz him down if he so much as even thinks about touching me, Nick, " she said, leaning forward.
"I fell asleep in my office," she said with a hint of a smile, "So lets not have the pot call the kettle black, eh? There's been plenty of nights you've stayed in the labs."
Moreau's features didn't soften at the attempt to be cute. "We'll see. Alright Aubrey, well I'm going to get to work today then. I trust you'll be in tonight?" Moreau said with a cold tone.
Aubrey frowned, not liking his tone. "I said I was sorry, Nick."
"Your forgiven Aubrey. But I need to get back to work." His tone really wasn't any warmer. Moreau stood up and poured the coffee into the trash can. Leaving his mug for the cleaning crew to get.
Aubrey dropped her hands to side with a sigh. It could have been worse, she guessed. She left his office, headed down to the labs to be productive and her mind off it.

Anger and Tears Aubrey must have PMSing. Yeah, that was it. Just a bit of hormones.. that's why everything was falling apart. She couldn't believe her and Sabin had such a knock-down drag out fight in front of... islanders.
Augh, it made her skin crawl. Moreau didn't ignore her. And she'd prove. Yeah? Moreau couldn't really be that mad at her... could he? Well there was one way to fix things with Moreau AND prove her case to Sabin.
She double checked Lab 7 to make sure it wouldn't be in use. Overriding the command to the observation camera, she slipped in and started to set the scene. She double-sanitized the labtable, then, looking around furtively, began to shed her clothes. When she was completely nude, she adjusted her hat and donned only her labcoat. Hopping up on the labtable and positioning herself just right, she fished her communicator out of the lab coat and put a direct line through to Moreau.
"Yes?" Moreau's voice picked up, he recognized Aubrey's line immediately. He was frustrated at the moment but with Sabin out of commission he had no one to forward his calls to.
"Hey Nick," she said, trying to sound chipper. "Look, I need down in Lab 7 right away of you can, baby. Its really important. I've found something I think you'll want to see."
http://kamiki.net/Gaia/aubrey_edit_trans.jpg
"Alright Aubrey." Moreau's voice showed a bit of... impatience. "I'll be there shortly." Moreau said, then he hung up abruptly. A short trip later and he was walking down the hall towards Lab 7.
Without even looking as he opened the door "What is it Aubrey?"
Aubrey just gentle cleared her throat and tossed her hair gently.
Moreau took one look, a look of surprise first crossing his face. Then after only a moment it turned cold again. "I don't have time for this." Moreau said as he started walking back down the hall towards the elevator.
Aubrey blinked, almost expecting that he was joking. What the hell?? It wasn't until the lab door was shut that Aubrey could get herself to move. A mix of rage and sorrow made her chest tight as she leaped off the table, wrapping the labcoat closed around her and taking off after him down the hall. "EXCUSE me??" What else was there to say? She did not need this right now.
"I don't have time for this... I thought I hired a professional. Obviously though, that hasn't been the case." Moreau turned looking mostly cold with a tint of anger. Moreau was starting to feel that perhaps Aubrey felt her personal relationship with him granted her too many liberties. He wasn't going to have that anymore.
The remark obviously cut her deep, giving him a truly hurt expression. "Nick.... I just, I thought, I was trying..." She had no idea what to say. "I was just trying to apologize... I mean, I am your girlfriend, Nickolas... I thought you'd ...find it kind of sexy?" She motioned pathetically to the lab coat. She reached forward pleadingly by the lapels of his down coat. "You know.. to say I'm sorry," she said, trying to ease a seductive purr into her voice. "I'd let you do... anything..."
"What I'd like " to do right now Aubrey is get back to work. I've taken it personally into my hands to make sure the inventory inspection is right, and remanufactured those serums that Sabin wasted." he sighed.
"What I'd like to have is an assistant who doesn't contradict me just because she thinks that the fact that I'm sleeping with her means she has some special control over me." Moreau began to turn back around, his voice getting louder and more irate.
"If you'd like to say your sorry then perhaps you can do something productive around here. Instead of arguing with staff members in front of the entire island and throwing stupid parties." Moreau finished his turn and headed further towards the elevator.
Aubrey's face was turning red in frustration... her mind refusing to believe what he was hearing. "Oh please. I would have made that decision whether I was sleeping with you or not!" she called after him. "Not that there's been a lot of that happening recently ANYWAY." She growled to herself, then paled as she heard the rest.
"It wasn't a stupid party - I promised Colche I'd give her a birthday," she said, following after him. "And...and... okay, I'm sorry about the fight with Duvert - but he- he... did yo hear what he was saying?"
"I expected more professionalism out of you. Maybe not out of him, but out of you." Moreau said bluntly as he continued down the hall. "If your that frustrated then why not just go take care of yourself, let the scientists do their work." Moreau's sarcasm was thick and biting. He was tired of it all tonight.
"I said I was sorry. It took a minute to catch what he was implying, but her jaw nearly hit the floor. "How dare you!" she hissed. "I did this foryou you heartless b*****d!" The moment the words escaped her lips, however, she clamped them over her mouth as all the color left her face. The look wasn't regret - or shock - nothing short of fear.
Moreau's cold look turned even colder. Moreau turned to the elevator. "Goodbye Aubrey." he said as it dinged before opening.
"No... no Nick, I'm sorry - " her words were fast and pleading. "Please, let's talk about this, okay?"
Sabin had been bustling about Labroom six, a giddy grin on his face, and was stepping out for some extra materials that he realized were in another room. However, as he stepped out, there was someone NEW in the hallway. He had been so immersed he hadn't even noticed the shouting. Now, however, he nearly barreled into Aubrey Lockheart who was standing in the hall.
Sabin blinked. Then blinked again.
His first inclination was to say something crass given the last time they had spoken, but those words died in his mouth as his eyes traveled downwards and a grin spread across his face like an infection.
"Auubrey~" He said with a wolfish smile. for the moment, his business in the laboratory was forgotten.
"Help Miss Lockhart back to her work Dr. Duvert." he said. During Aubrey's moment of distraction the elevator came open, and Moreau stepped in. The door began to shut, it's destination another floor.
"What do you mean 'goodbye'?" was her last pleading question to him before turning around, totally forgetting about her state of dress for a moment before her eyes went as wide as saucers and she clutched the labcoat closed.
The damage was already done, however, as Sabin's eyes had already gotten a full glimpse of the ample curves that were completely unobscured by clothing, except for the coat off to the sides. Sabin wasn't normally a lech, but it had been some time for the widower.
"I.... uhm... hmmm.." He glanced quickly back to Moreau- who he had not even realized was there until a moment ago. Then, he was amazed that he wasn't shouted at himself... for seeing... hell, for even being in the lab areas.
He turned back to Aubrey, letting the situation linger for a moment longer before his brain started to play catchup after the elevator dinged closed. There was a fight. Aubrey was naked. Moreau had obviously made a choice, and wasn't to the cameras yet. "I told you so." He said quietly, unwilling to let this go given the bitter insults and denials she had slung at him just days earlier.
A fire burned behind Aubrey's eyes as with the speed of a cobra shot on of her hand and whipped her palm hard across his left cheek.
Sabin lifted his hand with a snarl on his lips that died after a moment. It was crass, he knew. But he was upset. Upset at Moreau, upset at Aubrey already. "Well, Correct me if I'm wrong, but from your state of... undress... I would assume that Moreau effectively just told you he had other things he'd rather be doing."
Sabin's eyes, however, still lingered to the curve of her thighs, the swell of her bosom barely covered by the coat.
"I. Can. Not. Handle. You. Right. Now." she hissed between her teeth, her face redding and the tears just moments away. She breezed by him and back towards the lab
Sabin took a step back and snorted. It wasn't worth it right now. He had more important things on his mind. "I did warn you." He mentioned.
He commented as he went into the other lab to retrieve fresh cotton swabs. "He puts his work first. And there is increasingly less room for ANYTHING else in his eyes. If anything, he's only getting more controlling. My... suspension is evidence of THAT."
Aubrey pretending not to hear him, disappearing into the labs to get dressed.
Sabin shrugged. "be careful." He called after her as he got what he needed and headed back to room six.
A bit later, and after a good cry in the lab, Aubrey collected herself and headed off to find Moreau. The videos showed he wasn't in the labs, so he was most likely in his office.
As Aubrey headed up into the mansion, she felt the elevator shudder as the thunderstorm outside raged on. It almost seemed to be mimicking her mood she mused bitterly to herself, but she gave a yelp at the the elevator lurched again, and went pitch black.
The power had gone out. Aubrey wasn't normally claustrophobic, but being trapped in an elevator with no power was certainly disconcerting. She pulled out her communicator and tried to reach Moreau.
There was a bit of crackle on the line from the storm's interference. "What is it now Miss Lockheart?" Moreau's familiar voice came through the crackling.
"I'm trapped in the elevator," she said meekly, "How long does it take for the generators to come on?"
As if on cue, there was a loud thumping sound, and the elevator started back up with a jerk, the lights inside on dim.
"Nevermind," s he mumbled. "Look, I'm on my way to talk to you, please... I'll be there in a few minutes." Before he had a chance to answer, she clicked it closed.
"If you must." Moreau said into the microphone. Moreau was frustrated, everything had piled up to make his life miserable lately, first Sabin's incident, then James, now they were having power problems no less. Moreau had spent millions on the backup generators though, it would be fine.
Aubrey would know how long they took if she'd looked over the technical manuals like he had. Moreau was a detail person, and no detail should be overlooked. Moreau had no time for foolish games and honestly, that's what he felt Aubrey was treating it as at this point.
Aubrey tapped on his office door before slipping in. She was fully dressed now, her modest make up washed off and her hair pulled back into a frizzy ponytail. She looked much like she did in high school - the confident woman that had bloomed was now a faltering unsure girl, looking like she was about to face her doom.
"Come in." Moreau said as she knocked on the door. He was very much at the end of his own ropes though he doubted Aubrey could see that. He knew what she was seeing, and at the moment, despite everything else. He didn't care.
"We should talk," she said cautiously, closing the door gently behind her.
"Talk, talk, talk... don't you actually work around here anymore?" Moreau tapped his pen irately on his desk. "Why would you want to talk to your heartless boss about anything?"
Aubrey's mouth open and closed a few times, angered by the first statement, but realises she should try to keep her wits about her. The second comment hurt, but she deserved that one. "Because," she said quietly, "you're more than my boss, Nick... aren't you?"
"Perhaps, but with that lies the problem." Moreau stared Aubrey in the eyes. "You don't think of me as your boss anymore, you think of me as your boyfriend."
"What did you honestly think?" Moreau's voice grew louder and more taunting. "I'll just tell Sabin that it's okay to keep his little abominations and I'll just butter ol' Nicky-poo back up with some sex?"
Moreau rolled his eyes.
Aubrey swallowed and tried to keep the tears at bay. "I.. I see you as a partner, Nick...." she started, twisting her fingers around in her hands. "In everything... in work, in life... is that so wrong..."
She chewed on her bottom lip. "I said I was sorry about the Duvert thing.. I was just emotional and things were heated... and... well, I mean.. yeah I was trying to you know.. " she motioned with hands, "smooth things over? Its not like you haven't done the same thing!"
"But this isn't a partnership Aubrey. This is a working arrangement. Maybe you've confused your personal life and your work life, but I haven't. I hired Dr. Lockheart, I dated Aubrey. Maybe that was a mistake." Moreau sighed.
"I respected you... once."
Aubrey's blood turned to ice. "What do you mean... once."
"I'm not sure your the person I came to respect, admire, and enjoy working with." Moreau tapped against the desk. "It's probably my fault, for making it personal."
The tears came unbidden to her cheeks, and she reached up quickly to bat them awake. "Please don't say that..." she whispered, taking a few steps closer to his desk. "Nick my feelings for you never changed.. just the dynamic in our relationship." She searched for the words - anything - to say. "I love you.. I've always loved you! I strove to become what I am today because of you, Nick... please."
Part of Moreau wanted to admit, that he loved her as well. At least on the level that he was capable of that. But he was angry, and aggressive, and saw himself gaining the upper hand. Just like he always did when he was in such a position... he took advantage of it.
"Until further notice, perhaps it's best if things stayed professional between us Dr. Lockheart." he said with a sense of finality.
It was taking every ounce of will power not to break down sobbing. She knew it would be wasted on him...she knew he's view it as a display of weakness. Instead she just stood rigid and closed her eyes, breathing slowly, her shoulders trembling. "I don't know I can do that, Nick... please. Don't do this to me..." She opened her pleading eyes, though the look was already one of defeat.
"It's done." Moreau said as a conveniently timed lightning bolt struck in the background. "Consider it... a suspension." he said coldly.
Moreau's eyes were cold, it showed no sign of the sympathy that Aubrey was obviously looking for. Moreau was mad, it wasn't that he didn't want to still be with Aubrey. He wanted her to know her place, and her priorities. He figured this would be good for her.
Moreau had allowed Aubrey to run the show for too long. The last times that arguments were invoked he had had to make it up to her. He was going to remind her who's island it really was.
Aubrey visibly winced. "I have work to do," she managed to sputter out before the sobs overtook her as she spun around on her heel and ran out his office door.
The door closed behind Aubrey and Moreau felt a twinge of guilt. It didn't matter though, he knew he could have her back whenever he wanted. It was time she learned that as well.

((Just before the announcement))
"What do you mean I'm not allowed back in!?" Sabin fumed at the guards on the other side of the electrified fence. "I'm STAFF! I'm YOUR superior"
The guard shifted nervously on the other side of the fence, avoiding the white-haired doctor's glare. "I'm on orders from Moreau himself. He said NO one was to come through the gates that was on the other side, not even staff."
"That is RIDICULOUS." Sabin belted. "I was on official business!"
The guard was shaking his head, supported by the rifle in his arms, and its twins in the other two guards.
Sabin crossed his arms. "I've been out here in the RAIN and storm. I am soaked to the bone, and my quarters are on the other side of this bleeding fence. Now open up before I-"
And Sabin was cut off by the voice of Moreau himself as it was broadcast over the whole island simultaneously.
Sabin stopped mid-sentence. He had head it himself - ANYONE on the outside was just that - on the outside until this was solved.
"I'm a suspect?!" Sabin demanded incredulously. "You have got to be kidding me!"
One guard snickered to the other. "You shouldn't have been out all night in the rain and storm." He parroted his words back to him mockingly, exalting in the chance to backtalk to the eccentric white-haired doctor.
Sabin replied with a smouldering stare that managed to shut the man up, even around the rather nasty-looking shiner that blossomed a blackish purple around his right eye.

It wasn't long before the tan and black blur came speeding up the gravel path towards the laboritiries. Her wars were back and she looked panicked. her blue eyes were wide and even without real confirmation of what was going on her heart was beating heavily in her chest. Of course coming along the hill as fast as she was was making her feel sick. her mucles burned and her chest heaved. the cheetah needed to stop, ti couldn't run this far without a rest, without a sleep, without a meal, a bite of chocolate cake wasn' eveough to fuel this much energy.
Pin point stop. Her claws dug seep in to the movable path but she only slid a little, those trackshoe claws stopping her dead in her tracks though she did lurch forwards , bending down in a stoop, oneclawed hand resting on the ground as she panted. Her sides were aching, she had never pushed ehrself or the cheetah that far before.
There was a long moment of silence from the young girl, her long jet black hair trailing the ground as she stood in a bent over possition. Raising slowly from her stoop though and after one final pink tongued pant she faced the gates, her beautiful blue eyed gaze trailingup to the building beyond. Sabin wasn't there, the guards wern't even there "MOMMY!" She called at the top of her lungs her eyes looked clouded lost.

Sabin turned quickly, warily at the rapid approach of one of the islanders, on his guard with a hand raised, only to lower it a moment later as he ralized it was Aubrey's 'pet' islander, the Cheetah girl.... Colche.
He took a breath and looked between the girl and the labs before speaking, shoving his hands into the pockets of his dark slacks. He was still dressed in his black slacks and dark shirt. His top hat was absent, as was the cloak he had sometimes been seen in. Mud was caked over his slacks and shirt, on his hands. He was soaking wet, hair matted, dirty, and tied back into that mop of a pony tail.
"I wouldn't reccomend touching the fence." Sabin finally spoke, a growl in his throat as he was still steaming at the guardsman.

Colche was pulled out of her daze via sabins angry toned voice. He swam in to her view and she blinked owlishly. She didn't know this man, he wasn't furry or scaly but he seemed to know something. Her tail tip twitched "Where Aubrey?" she asked simply her perfect baby blue eyes fixed on the man as if he would know as if he were responsable for her whereabouts.
Her ears flickered as she obviously came down from the adrenelin fueld high which had managed to get her up the hill. She physically slumpped, she had run her body much too hard "where mommy?" she squeeks again flopping on the ground to stop her legs from wobbling and her head spinning.

"I don't know specifically" He commented irritably and wryly. "I heard the same as anyone else. Just now. Although I assume on the other side of the fence"
He huffed, a frown tugging at his mouth as he cast a long, considering look at the labs behind the fence, eyes narrowing in thought.
Sabin had heard a snippet of the Aubrey and Moreau fight the previous night... now he almost wished he had been paying more attention to it before he walked in.
"But these.... rentacops..." He ignored the guards' sneers. "aren't letting anyone in. Not even me. But if the electric fence doesnt' stop you, their guns will."

Colche trembled as she looked up at the guards, her ears flattened tightly against her head, she pushed herself to her paws again, she had to get in, she had to know what was wrong with Aubrey. "Wanna see mommy" she stated to the guards, looking determinedly cute. Those big blue eyes fixed upon the men. Usually men of the nature these guards seemed to be would scare her, scare her witless infact, but a sound resolution had come about the little femme, she wasn't leaving until she saw Aubrey.
"Press zero" she stated pointing at the intercom. "Need mommy" she said simply her voice never wavering. She would have started to pace, the cheetah wanted to pace as if it were in a small cage not big enough to stretch it's legs but she stayed stock still, only a slight breeze moving her fur and hair, her tail tip flickering and twitching right at the very tip, irritation, impaitence, worry, the tail tip twitched because of these things.

Sabin himself wasn't exactly in the best of moods. He was wet, he was rather chilly, he was hungry, and he didn't want to be stuck out HERE. With the subjects. He was well aware that most of the islanders really didn't like him. And he was also feeling particularly victimized by the announcement. Who the hell else of the staff was stuck outside the fence?!
"She can't here you right now, dear." He said in a grumbling voice. "You can press bloody zero all you want. But these guys aren't letting us, either of us, in." He turned around, his back on the ******** them. they had been lucky to have him working for them. Now not only was he suspended, he was now STUCK outside the lab.
He started walking towards the village.

Colche pouted, she snuffled but didn't follow after Sabin. She sat slowly on the track instead looking at the building and the fence and the guards in that order. She wasn't moving until she saw Aubrey.
She sat watching the guards and trembling abit, she wasn't cold or frightened it was an adenelin shiver, it was draining out of her body completely now and made her teeth chatter. Looking between the guards, she looked ever so pittiful "plea..wanna see mommy" she whispered squeekily.
