Beast Charmer- Growth Quest Solo
Beast Tamer

Traveling the world had opened Koril’s eyes to many things. The young man had loved seeing the new places, new animals, and new people over the years. While his passion remained with the animals of the world, learning about the different people had become a side fascination of his as well. He had seen the dark side of people; those who hated him for being a hybrid, those who refused to move on from older and restricting mindsets, those who only saw animals as mindless creatures rather than beings, those with no consideration to lives outside of their own… They all existed.

He had also seen so much light though! Shelters used for healing both man and beast, the bonds between people and animals, orphans being taken in by open-hearted homes, people who saw his hybrid genes as unique but normal, people who shared things like food and shelter when he was lacking, dancing with special friends, and the love among the families of the land. Of course, his biggest influence of love was his own family. Parents, sisters, and a brother… anytime he made it home was a journey into a small world of love and acceptance and encouragement. There was the occasional riff, but they always managed to mend it. He felt like his family was unstoppable! Home was a special place. Home was where he had always planned to stay after seeing the world.

Was it enough, though?

On this particular stop, the owner of the stable near his home asked Koril to stay and work for him. It would be steady pay and steady hours. It was a tempting offer. He could use the money to buy his own place, and perhaps work his way up to having a stable of his own! He would welcome every sort of animal that came around, would have a couple healers on hand for any emergencies or treatments, and would give the best he could to the creatures in his town! He would be close to his family, and stick to one environment, not worry about running out of food or where he would find a safe place to sleep at night. It really was an ideal arrangement. He had always planned to return home when he was done with his book.

Yet… every time he came close to saying yes, something would make him hold his tongue. Something made him hesitate to settle down there. He loved his family, his town, Matori… but something was missing.

It bothered him that he couldn’t pinpoint what the missing piece was! He had always found himself to be content and so certain with his life more often than not. He had always been happy, outside of the occasional unpleasant situations. Even when things were unpleasant though, he could see the light at the end. When he looked down this possible path.. his gut clenched with indecision. He had the chance for legitimate stability here, and maybe make a family of his own one day! Why did that thought put him off so much?

He laid on his old bed in his parent’s house to ponder everything, one arm under his head while his beloved zanteer, Flana, was stretched out along his side. He knew that no matter where he went, she would go with him. After all, she had been his travel companion since he had been very young.

He had been working on his first book, covering his discoveries about the various creatures that inhabited the mainland of Tendaji. With the discovery of other islands over the years, he had shifted his focus to the new worlds and their creatures. Yael with its garden encrusted tinturals, the vicious wirenth, and the cave-dwelling surelia. Belrea with its tufted alinar, the maned durufs, and the vedra with the long necks and scales. He had even gone to the more recently discovered lands of the Kahikinan species, though his own limited ability to explore the deep waters left his visit short and incomplete. It was enough to write about though, like the flashy waikaki, and the stealthy hanaluke! At least an initial volume to get it started.

He looked over at his desk full of notes and papers, one stack in particular rising above the rest. His book on the island creatures just needed editing, and it would be done. His eyes slid over to the second desk, which looked about the same as the first. That desk held the notes of the mainland creatures, like the friendly zanteers, the flat-headed impas, and the large raptri. Despite the depth of the paper stack, he felt like something was missing. Perhaps that was what kept him from agreeing to stay home and work? His personal work wasn’t complete, so he felt the need to continue? Or perhaps he had simply acquired the taste for life on the road? Whatever it was, it kept him from saying yes to working at the stable. It kept him from imagining himself settling down just yet.

His hand idly stroked along Flana’s head, and his gaze shifted toward the window. No.. he couldn’t stay home. There was still more to find in the world. Something that he couldn’t find by staying in Matori.

Conclusion: Life as a beast charmer has seen Koril develop from a still naïve youth to a more steadfast and grounded young man. Koril had always planned to return to Matori and settle down near his family once he had enough information to finish his books. Now that the opportunity is presenting itself though, he finds himself resistant to the idea. This is a big change in his mindset, realizing that his original plan had taken such a drastic turn into the opposite direction. While he might not be 100% sure on what it is that he feels is missing, he has learned to trust himself to go after what he wants, and decides to continue an uncertain life as opposed to the stability being offered to him.

Beast Tamer- Journal entry 1
There's More To See

Heading out to the small family stable, Koril couldn’t help looking back at the family home with a pang of sentimentality. He could remember when they had upgraded the home when he’d been younger; both because they could finally afford it and because the family had been preparing to grow again. It was amazing to think those three were all teenagers already! He had been there to help with them as they’d been born and grown, but most of their later years had found him traveling. His most recent trip home held the shock of seeing how grown up they all were! Being able to catch up with his family was a beloved time, but he was feeling the itch again. He had grown as well, and found that lingering in Matori was not what he wanted. There was something else out there for him, he just knew it!

For now, the only articulation he could manage for what he was feeling was that he had become accustomed to living on the road. It didn’t feel like the exact answer, but it was what he had at the moment. After all, there was still much to learn about the creatures of the land. He had finished his books and had the originals tucked safely away in his bedroom, but his pack held a leaflet of fresh new papers ready to be filled. One could only learn so much in a single journey!

Sighing, he pulled open the heavy stable door and walked over to one of the open stalls. “Hey, Sandstorm. You ready to go?”

Sandstorm was an aptly named xaraan, colored like the sands deep within a desert wind-funnel. The lanky creature gave a little squawk and shook itself out before stepping forward to nuzzle his beak against Koril’s outstretched hand.

Koril grinned and ran his hand along the xaraan’s long neck, and then up to ruffle the soft crown of feathers on her head. “Yeah. Me, too. We’ve both been cooped up here, haven’t we?” A little trill from the rafters above sent Koirl’s gaze upward, and he chuckled lightly. “Of course you’re coming, too, aren’t you?”

Descending from the shadows above, a sleek loatoa dropped gracefully onto Sandstorm’s back. Bearing black fur with lovely green markings, Mekameko was the most recent addition to Koril’s entourage. She gave another little trill and kneaded the xaraan’s back. Sandstorm gave a little shake, but otherwise seemed unperturbed by his new rider.

“Okay, there’s just one left to get. Come on out and stretch your legs first.” Sandstorm would be Koril’s main form of transportation for the trip. It would be much better than his initial journey, thumbing rides with wagons and wearing through more shoes than he could count. While he still intended to do those things, it would be more out of desire to meet others and for safety rather than necessity. He led Sandstorm out of the stable and patted his rump, the xaraan giving its body another shake before wandering around the yard. Mekameko remained contently on Sandstorm’s back for the ride, both tails curled against her body.

In the stable, Koril prepared the items the animals would need for the journey ahead. It was easier to plan this time around, now that he knew where the good places to stop and rest were. It was amazing to think that his first journey had begun so long ago with just him and- “Flana!” Koril yelped as a yellow blur brushed by his legs, the wide tail nearly knocking him off his feet! “Goodness, I’da thought you’d slow down at least a little with your age,” he teased. Flana the zanteer paused briefly to give Koril a wide grin before continuing whatever mission she was on. Koril just sighed and resumed packing. He’d had Flana since, well, it felt like forever! Flana had popped out of the sea one day, and it had been love over since! He couldn’t imagine a journey without her.

Back outside, he closed the stable door and gave a whistle. Sandstorm came loping to his side, giving an expectant squawk. Even Flana came trotting with a shellfish in her mouth. Koril knew Flana was going to miss this part of being near the water. Her future meals would not be quite as fresh as she got here in Matori. He looked around the homestead and out over the water, trying to soak the sight in. Each territory was so unique, but Matori would always be special to him. Still, he hooked the packs onto Sandstorm with a determined gesture. The other territories had their own brand of special, of course; some more than others…

The good news was, he now had a map with his own notations of good places to rest, eat, and restock. Of course, his map was a few years old... Exactly why he needed to get back out there! If his notes no longer correlated with what was out there, he would be ready to update whatever was needed. He was looking forward to revisiting many of the towns on his trip. The animals, the foods, the shops, the friends…

Taking a deep breath, Koril climbed up onto Sandstorm’s back. “Ready?” Sandstorm stretched his short, clawed arms with a pleased growl and started off. Mekameko adjusted to sit right behind where Koril sat, nose lifting with interest at the new adventure starting. Flana took a moment to finish licking the shell clean of any meaty tidbits before bouncing after them. Koril spared another look back at the big house. When would he see it again? He had no idea. While saddened by that thought, it also excited him. Grinning, he faced forward again and encouraged Sandstorm to go a little faster. Perhaps home was now behind him, but there was so much more ahead!

Beast Tamer- Growth Quest Solo
Beast Master

The stable was practically bursting at the seams with animals in Koril’s care. It could be difficult to make sure each one got the individual care and attention they needed, but the hybrid was up to the task! Whether it was a mammu with a stuffy snout or a wild parak that ate the wrong meal or a precious radaku brought in by a loving owner, Koril worked hard to make sure they were comfortable and safe. It came with its dangers, of course. Frightened and injured animals could be quite defensive and fierce if handled improperly. He had come away with his share of injuries for sure, and made use of his husband’s healing abilities on plenty of occasions.

Koril’s eyes had been opened to the world around him; the rose-tinted glasses he once wore had broken long ago. People were careless. Careless with animals, property, each other… The stall he currently sat in was occupied by a capramel with a strained back from carrying too heavy a load. The owner had overburdened the poor beast and pushed it until it could barely walk, and then dumped it on his doorstep with demands that it be fixed right now. It felt like it had taken ages to convince the owner that the creature needed more than one day to recover!

The capramel had been agitated and nervous when he tried to first get it into the stable. He had the bite mark on his hand to prove that. Par for the course though! Once he got the beast’s back stabilized, he sat with it in the warm stall and stroked its head. Eventually, the capramel fell asleep.

With his brow knit sharply, he sat there staring at the beast. How could people be so cruel? Why were the innocent ones always the victims?

Then he heard his daughters laughing outside of the barn, and he felt his brow relax. Little was known about the previous life of his daughters, but they had been forced to find new homes at such young ages. People had caused upheaval in their tender years… yet there they were. They sounded happy, they looked healthy, and he loved them more than life itself. He could never even imagine harming them.

In them, he saw his hope for the world. There was so much darkness, but there was also love and happiness. Compassion and care could overcome the darkest days. Those girls would flourish, and they would help the world flourish in turn.

It was shocking to look back over everything he had taken on in his life. Being carefree was very much not an option anymore! The responsibilities of the stable, of being a husband and a father… Those first steps into the world had been for himself. Leaving home that first time, he hadn’t been thinking about how he could grow as an individual. He had simply wanted to enjoy himself learning about animals and raise awareness in others. He knew that people changed with time, but he hadn’t realized how much he himself had changed until he paused to look back over his life.

No, he wasn’t the naive child he’d once been, living at home under the loving influence of his family. He wasn’t quite the invincible goof he’d been when he’d left home again to find his heart here in Zena. He certainly wasn’t as laid back as he’d been before their daughters had come home. Change was inevitable. Change was good. He had come so far, and he knew he wasn’t done living yet!

(( Word count: 595 ))

Conclusion: Reflecting on his life, Koril has matured into a fairly well-rounded young man. He has come so far from the starry eyed youth he’d once been. His love of life has never faltered though, only growing with each transition into becoming an adult, a husband, and a father.
