Chapter 9: Grave Expectations

|| IC ||

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The cool winds of Zena chilled the travelers who journeyed to the border town of Coeld. It was decided that, this time, the meeting would occur in a Zenan, and as a result many were forced to don warmer clothing and take up their stored furs. The news came from the council, but it was Freya who stood before everyone as the spokesperson. Her presence was still, but noteworthy thanks to the large snow-white Chiavi that sat beside her.

Many who traveled stared, but Freya ignored them with her preoccupation. She had recently corresponded with Besian, seeking some information from him in regard to the recent happenings. If her face was anything to go by, it was clear that his response was not what she wished to hear.

It was that look that cued Vescillea in to the need to approach her friend with a soft touch.

"Hello old friend," She said with gentle cheer, "How I wish we were reuniting under better circumstances..."

As she spoke, she glanced up at the Chiavi with wonder, letting Freya collect herself as needed. The Ice council member seemed to do so easily, and turned to the Windling after a last moment of silence.

"I as well..." She responded slowly, before looking at the crowd, "It seems we have a good turn out..." Which was good, considering the news they needed to provide. Freya knew the Wind nomads were harder to bring to one place, so she hoped that once this meeting was over, many would do their part to spread word across their two nations.

Arronthain Post 1
Arron had joined the crowd heading to Zena for the neeting. There were concerning thinga happening he gathered and since he was not all that busy with a job at the moment he thought he would go and check it out. The wind ruffled his hair and he felt a thrill at being in Zena itself. This was where half odf his Father's peopke came from. It was also freaking cold!

He scanned the crowd and was shocked to see someone with his own face. "Volka?"

Volkarosh
Post: 1
Location: With Arronthain
--------------------

When Arronthain had left for Sauti, Volka had felt as though a part of her had also left. Understandable - he was her twin. She'd been apart from him before, for that long time in the cold, so it wasn't a big deal... except it was, because just before he had left, he had taken a complete 180 turn to what she'd known of him. Instead of beasts, he'd chosen blades. Instead of the blades of their parents, he'd chosen knives.

Are we truly more similar then I knew?

She wondered to herself often, now.

Or more different, all along?

She wanted answers, many answers. And so, to Sauti she went to find her brother. The Tale had been a long, arduous trek, but she'd done it before, all of it, and when she'd entered the land of the mountains, she'd found it painfully familiar.

I know this place...

She thought to herself often.

When concerning things began being whispered in the wind, tales of disappearances and vanishings, a trill of concern echoed in her heart. Her brother - surely not her brother - could be among them.

So, following what she hoped was a trail, she went to Zena.

And this place too...

Zena was no different. It was home, too. Cold and white, but home. Home, indeed, for so long, that the pulling of her cloak about her was a familar gesture, the bite of chill on her nose brought back memories of frosty nights and warm fires.

Crowds milled in the city of Zena, and Volka lurked at the outskirts, looking at every brown face she could see until she saw him, her reflection. Immediately, she stalked towards him.

"Arron." she said cooly, coming quickly to his side. She assessed him briefly. "That cloak is not warm enough." she admonished. He was not among the dissappeared, but at that rate, he was going to get himself frostbite.

AKIYAL
Post: 1

If Akiyal hadn't already been in Zena to begin with, there was no way he would have cared enough to travel to the cusp of the snowy region's borders. People disappearing didn't especially feel like a problem to him. As far as Aki was concerned, people 'disappeared' all the time for one reason or another and so infrequently decided to return. It certainly felt like everyone he knew was fine with just abandoning him at a moment's notice for days and days, and weeks and months-

But he didn't want to dwell on that. He'd come to Zena of his own accord weeks ago, with 'friends,' and it just so happened that they were still present for this... tribal gathering meeting for reasons Aki didn't actually care to understand. Discussions of what could happen in the future and attempts to spread panic by giving the tiniest fraction of information that could possibly be conceived and leaving the rest up to the populace's wild imagination.

Something like that, he was sure.

Akiyal was not here for that. He'd made a point to show up because great sums of people gathered together for perilous reasons was exciting, and so little else in Zena's mountainside was exciting. Excitement was distracting, and surely since it was such a large gathering, there would be other commodities? Like food. He wanted food. And maybe some shouting and some shoving or kicking. Something that would make this trip worth it.

Instead, he saw only the familiar... fabric of a man he'd met during his first week in Zena. There had surely been other things of note about the guy (whose name he couldn't remember; it must not have been especially important), but just as they did then, the bright colors of his clothes stood out more than anything or anyone else in the milling crowd. Aki shimmied about the throngs of people, curiously peering at the guy just to be certain that it was the same one, and-

Right, yes, he'd been a white-haired, silver-eyed old dude, and that pretty much fit the bill.

So, feeling pleased that he recognized someone, even if not especially well, he strode up behind Dancy-Pants Hybrid Man and slung an arm about his shoulders. "Hey, buuuuddy," Aki chirped, grinning in his malevolent-but-dumb-hick-boy way. "Whatcha doing out here? You don't believe all this crap, right?"

Makani - Post 1

It had been a while since he'd been to Zena, not since he'd gone to help out Riya when she was injured. It was always nice to visit since it was where he'd spent his younger years but the circumstances today weren't exactly the best. He was heading toward the inn on behalf of his sister and their inn, to see what was going on, and to report everything back to her. He felt important getting to go out like this, getting to help out in a manner that was more then just purifying water and doing the occasional healing job on their patrons.

Here was to hoping that neither of those things were needed in a capacity that Sinny couldn't take care of on her own while he was out. Lifting a hand he made a motion to Rae who was walking at his side and said, "Come here, girl. The more people that are gathering the harder it is for me to 'see' with my magic. You're going to have to step up."

The big, fluffy raptrix gave a little 'wuff' sound before trotting forward, putting her head under his hand, and set to work leading him forward. Her willingness to help out brought a smile to his face, "Your always were the best seeing eye dog." He told her, scratching her behind the ear as they moved forward, trying to find a place where they could best listen in one what was going on.

Sawenah had overheard something about a large gathering on the Zena/Sauti border, wasn't sure what it was about necessarily, but she had been headed to Zena anyway, so seemed like a sure way to shorten her trip. Unfortunately, Her father had to wrap up some business for the Dragol family in Sauti before starting his route over again, so she said her goodbyes and hitched a ride north to Coeld.

As the cart slowed she hopped off the end and scurried her way into the crowd. It was nearly as busy as the streets of Sulburi, but with far fewer buildings. Clasping her hands together she gave a breath into her fingers and shivered a bit, Probably not the best weather given what she had been wearing, she hadn't noticed as much on a cart full of people with their furs and thick cloaks... Now out in the elements, she realized a change was in order. Perhaps she could find some warmer clothes... somewhere? Scanning the crowd for a store, vendor, merchant... anything, she happened upon one of the most magnificent sights; a snow white Chiavi.

A warmth gittered through her system as she slipped through the crowd, making her way toward the creature. She had heard of them, but of course never seen one. After the Raptrix had become endangered and removed from the capture list, these creatures were discovered and rumor has it... can be captured, trained, and eventually used as a mount~

Standing far enough as to not be creepy, but near enough to satisfy her fascination, Sawenah reached out her fingers delicately tickling at the space between her and the massive bird. She wanted so badly to touch it, run her fingers through its soft feathers, but alas, that would be awkward and surely unsettling for the Familiar. Giving a quick wave 'Goodbye' to the Chiavi who stoically remained at its masters' side, she spun up in her silken shoulder cloak and turned to head back into the masses for warmth when someone caught her eye.

Tall, Brown hair, Scruffy, Manbun~

'Awwwe~ he still has his hair in a bun~'
She giggled to herself as she skirted the outside of the crowd to catch up with the man. Giving no more than a few footfalls of her sandals smacking against the frigid packed ground she sprung into his arms and gave him a tight hug, "Gaddok!~ You're alright! I was so worried after you left with that guy... What was his name?" She paused a moment but then lost herself in the warmth of the furs adorn his shoulders, "Oh wow~ This is so warm... I'm just going to..." She casually snuggled into his cloak and gives one final shake to get the cold away, "This is nice~"

Koril- Post 1

Standing in the snow, the water and fire hybrid wondered how much force it would take to knock the teeth from his head. His chattering teeth felt like they were slamming together, but he couldn't stop them. The layers of cloth and fur did little to help, either. Of the places he frequented, the cold of Zena was not one of them. "S-s-s-sorry, Fl-l-l-lana," he stuttered out, glancing down at his familiar zanteer. The notices seemed too important to ignore, and he would not have made it to the location in Oba in time. ..He wished he had gone there anyway.

Flana sat pressed against Koril's leg, wrapped in her own little cloak and clearly just as displeased with the situation as her owner felt.

Gaddok had heard about the gathering while he had been "spending time" in Zidel. Now that his name was cleared, the bounty lifted, and all misunderstandings eradicated, he was free to go about his business... But he wasn't about to tempt that fate. As he arrived in Coeld he stuck to the outskirts of the crowd, only hearing the whisperings of disappearances. Not sure how that warrants a gathering such as this, but perhaps they are more serious than just random disappearances...

Keeping his weapon close, he continued to edge closer to the crowd to try and gather more information about this odd phenomenon. As he listened in he heard the smacking of leather on the earth coming from behind him, and turned just in time to catch a tall blonde who pulled him into a tight embrace. "Heh, Hi there..." He craned his head enough to make out the knotted bun and braids, "Sawenah?" It was the Hybrid he had met in Oba; Moishye's daughter. Returning the hug he laughed, "Yes, I am fine. Is Moishye with you?"

As she nuzzled into his cloak and shivered he realized she was no where near dressed for the weather, "Chi's Mercy, Sawenah! You'll freeze out here." Slipping off his cloak he rested it over her shoulders, "Hang on, I have an extra pair of socks in my pack... That will at least protect your toes." Sandals...Who wears sandals in the snow?!'

Arronthain Post 2
Draconic Feline

Arron's eyebrows rose at his sister which was his version of gawking. He felt so much better now that she was here. She would always have his back. His twin. "What do you think is going on here? Can you feel the tension emanating from everyone?"

He doubted he would have too much if his own work to do right now but he felt it was important that he be here for this. That his sister had shown up only seemed to confirm it. He was right where he was supposed to be.

Prala || Post 1

Prala's breath clouded the air as she trudged through the snow down the streets of Coeld, her new boots were slightly too big, and heavy, making her feel ungainly, she sincerely hoped she wouldn't topple over face first into a snowbank in front of all of these strangers but at this point it was a serious possibility. The frigid air clawed at her lungs with each breath making her wince, "Why in the name of the Goddess did I decide it was a wonderful idea to travel to godsforsaken Zena when I left Juahar? This frozen tundra will be the death of me!" she swayed and corrected herself again, flexing her creative mind as she cursed both thoroughly and vehemently under her breath.

She sniffled, the end of her nose bright red, of course she would catch a cold while traveling to Coeld, she laughed bitterly and winced at the scratch in her throat. She reached her mittened hands up to massage the ends of her long ears, which were starting to burn from the icy wind, Prala was beginning to worry they were going to freeze and snap off the next time she touched them. She pulled her hair over her ears as best as she could and kept going.

Prala reached the crowd milling in front of the meeting place and her eyes were immediately drawn to the giant white Chiavi seated by a... Formidable looking woman. Her jaw dropped. She was still absorbed in the sight when the woman in front of her suddenly sprang into the arms of a man squealing excitedly, her attention shifted, as did her balance, and the traitorous boots used this shift in concentration to betray her. To Prala's abject horror she toppled forwards into a snow drift, her bow and quiver making a racket when she hit the ground and promptly sank a few inches, her long white hair splayed about her like a fan. "Oof" she groaned into the snow, her face burning so red hot she was sure the snow around her must be melting.

I'll just lay here until they go away or I die of the cold or embarrassment Prala decided, Maybe if I'm still everyone will just forget I'm here...

Plopping into the snowbank beside the bundled hybrid that had been awkwardly trudging about, she giggled, "Well~ this works out quite nicely!" Sawenah wiggled tighter into her newly formed snow chair, "What an excellent idea~ Even if it was unintentional."

Stripping the leather cords that held her sandals to her feet, she slipped on the thick socks provided to her by Gaddok and then slipped back into her sandals and struggled to re-lace them, "Umm, These socks are thick... I can hardly get these laced." Blowing a few stray hairs from her face as she worked, Sawenah finally pulled the cord into a bow and let out a breath, "There!" She wiggled her toes and grinned as the numbness began to subside.

"Now to free us~" She chimed while plucking her spear from the street. She laid the shaft of the spear across her lap, and the lap of the shifter next to her, "Gaddok~ Pull us up! We're stuck."

Draven
Post 1

Draven had only been in Zena for a few days, but he was already ready to go back to the more tropical area of Matori. He wondered how his grandmother ever got around here. Even Regale was struggling against the cold, he had to fashion something over the Janarim so it didn't freeze. Stopping a moment to adjust the hood over his head, he looked around. Seemed that there were many here and most were heading in one direction. Frowning slightly, the Wind/Ice mix looked at his travel companion who stared back at him.

"Wonder what is going on that way. Shall we head over and see?" he asked the Janarim as if the creature would answer him. Stomping through the snow, finding that he had diverted from a more well used path. Draven followed some of the crowd to a meeting area. Something had to be up.. To have this many people in a gathering. He just wondered what it was.

((Draven is open for interaction))

Gaddok gave a laugh as he grabbed hold of the shaft of the weapon, between the ladies' hands, and gently pulled them to their feet, "Do your best to stay out of the snow, Sawenah. Those socks may be thick and warm now, but they will only remain that way so long as they are dry..." he figured his warning to be fruitless, the woman would do as she pleased; at least he tried?

Turning his attention to the other woman he sprung from the snowbank he brushed some snow from her cloak, "You okay? Uh-" he paused and stared into her large sapphire eyes and his heart skipped a beat, throat swelled. His chest tightened to the point he forgot to breathe as his mind stalled out.

'No. No, it's not her...'

Forcing a breath, his eyes focused on the woman in front of him and he tipped his head slightly, "I know you... Don't I." Gaddok couldn't place exactly where it was he had come across the young woman, or more importantly, he couldn't remember her name, "I want to say we encountered each other briefly in Tale?" that would make sense, right? She looks to be part shifter part leaf, so Tale or Jauhar... and about the only time he found himself in Jauhar was for the war with Oba nearly a decade back. "What in Bergchi's name brings you all the way up to Zena? " He asked with genuine curiosity... It was clear she hadn't come all this way for the lovely weather.

Rhag'na 1

Rhag’na was still a wanted man by his old band. It was still his duty though to make sure that Zena was safe. So he went to Coeld and stayed away from the crowd, just close enough for him to hear what was going on but out of sight and out of mind. If they were gathering this many people it could not be good for Zena. He had not heard of anything dangerous in Tendaji lately, but if needed he would join in whatever aid they needed for battle. His old family would not dare to harm him out in the open anyways.

Ziel 1

Ziel had never felt the cold as it was in Zena. She’d had to actually get dress and purchase a furred cape to ensure she stayed warm. Though she had thought she wouldn’t stay very long, the call for a gather kept her here. She wished she could return to the warmth of Oba, dreamed of it as she stood there freezing amongst the others. How did the icelings manage this? She hoped it would start soon, perhaps she would return straight home to her mother and father after this. If there was trouble brewing she’d rather be with them.
