Prentice - Journal entry 1
Class Affinity

”Come on, Flana!” Koril ran laughing along the ocean shore in Matori, soaked from top to bottom after swimming in the cool water. Flana, Koril’s zanteer friend, chased after him with a silly zanteer smile on her maw. Panting heavily, Koril hurried to where he had a canteen of water, flopping out onto his back with a mess of giggles. The laughter only grew when Flana ran him over, the flat end of her tail even smacking his chest with a sharp sound.

“Flana!” he moaned through his laugher, rubbing the sore spot on his chest. The innocent look he got in return only made him laugh all the more. Patting the ground next to him, he grinned and wrapped his arms around the zanteer’s neck lovingly. His face nuzzled against the thick white fur of Flana’s chest, and he sighed lightly. Running his fingers along the soft fur, how head cocked curiously. “Your fur is so thick, Flana,” he murmured. “Why doesn’t it weigh you down in the water?” His fingers burrowed in to find the silky skin under the thick layer of fur, bring a strange little trill from Flana. “You’re right. It doesn’t feel like the fur on other animals. It doesn’t even feel like my hair on my head!” Petting his own hair to be certain, he shook his head and sighed. “Mine gets heavy when it gets wet. I wish it stayed like yours. You were meant for the water, huh?”

Pursing his lips, he poked at the zanteer’s long whiskers. Flana wrinkled her nose as the sensitive hairs were played with, the expression making Koril laugh again. “What do you even do with these?” he asked, smirking at the gentle n** his hand received. “You can’t smell with them, ‘cause that’s what your nose is for.” Rubbing the cushy nose, he jumped back onto his feet. “I know! Let’s go back in the water. I’ve seen you use them in there before. I want a closer look!” He spun and ran for the water, grinning as the big yellow form hurried by him to reach the water first. She was so fast with those four strong legs! It was so interesting how they were powerful on both the land and in the water.

Diving in, he squinted against the sea water to watch the zanteer sip through the water. Of course, Flana was just swimming for fun, doing spins and loops to her heart’s content. While this did nothing to show how or why the whiskers worked, it did give the boy a chance to ponder those big paws the familiar had. Right! The extra skin between her toes! It made them act like paddles for the creature, pushing her wherever she wanted to go. Yet they were not just swimming paws. They had pads for running around on the surface, and claws for catching meals and self defense.

Self defense... That thought brought a frown to the sweet boy’s face, and he swam up for the surface to catch a breath of fresh air. The water could be a dangerous place; as could the land. There were many dangers on the dry land... but not as many as there had once been! The danger to his family was gone. Well, the danger he knew of. The danger that had tried to take him and his sister away when they had been younger. Would things have turned out differently if he’d had claws on the ends of his fingers to fight with?

Why would he want claws though? They were dangerous, and ran the risk of accidentally hurting people he cared for. He knew well enough that he bore a few scars from Flana’s playful affections without it being the familiar’s intention.

Speaking of, a bump to his leg brought Koril back to the present, and he reached out to pet the bright form circling his legs. Back to the matter at hand! Paddling away, he dove back under to watch Flana swimming again, admiring her sleek form. Her big tail had something to do with it all as well, but he could not quite tell what it was. Maybe it was like a rudder, like on the fishing boats? A way to steer.. but could the paws not perform the same action?

Popping back to the surface, Koril swam for the beach again. On his way, he could not help suddenly noticing the other creatures that filled the water. A juvenile alol preparing to shift its home to dry land swam lazily through some water weeds. A large drow was stirring up sand and coral not too far away in its search for food. Much further down the beach, a couple extra large yaotls were lazing about and sunning themselves contently. When he looked out at the horizon, he could see a wild zanteer leaping out of the water in its attempts to catch fish. Why did the alol start in water and grow to live on dry land? What was it that the drow actually ate? How big could the yaotls actually get? Why had Flana bonded with him when she could have been with her own kind in the water?

There were so many questions he had! The animals around him were such amazing creatures... How much did anyone really know about them? Animals lived all over the place, too! Not just in Matori! Surely they were all amazing and unique as well! Could he really learn about all of them?

Climbing onto the dry beach, Koril was practically vibrating with newfound energy. He had been rather aimless so far in life, and he had not minded it one single bit. Not knowing what was coming the next day was part of what kept life exciting. The options for the future were endless when one did not know the paths! Yet.. having an inkling of the path that might be felt just as exciting as not knowing. Maybe even more so? After all, it wasn’t as though his whole life was now laid out before him. Even with a path to follow, it could still fork, turn, backtrack, jump... A path did not mean a straight line!

While growing up wasn’t ideal to the boy, knowing that an adventure laid ahead of him was thrilling! Of course, he would need to figure out a way to convince his parents that he would be okay on his own. Would they be okay without him? Especially now that there were three siblings on the way!

Well, he didn’t have to leave just yet. He could wait until he was sure his parents and siblings would be okay without him.

Oh! Maybe he would find them a useful companion like Flana was for him! That was right; she would be there with him. Would she be able to handle the various environments? He looked back at his familiar, earning another silly smile from that furry face. Flana could handle anything! Like with him, she could wear a scarf if it got too cold. It would be a chance to see how adaptable she could be. She had adapted to living at home with him. They would explore the world together, and find more animal friends, and learn about all of them!

Prentice - Journal entry 2
Harder Than It Looks

When his parents had told him that he was going to be a big brother, Koril had been absolutely ecstatic. More babies were coming! Their family was getting bigger! There would be cute babies here for him to play with!

After just a few weeks though, Koril’s enthusiasm was wearing down. He could see it was wearing on his father and his mother, and even his sister, so he tried to help out as much as he could. It was a dizzying and exhausting task, for sure! Oh, the babies were sure adorable and cute, but their shrieks could pierce the night so much that he was certain the people in Oba could hear the noise! And with each of them being only a couple years apart from the others, they were always needing something different! Whether it was a fresh snack or a fresh diaper or a burping, there was rarely a calm minute between them. He felt terrible that his parents were getting so little sleep, but they were the ones who made the babies!

Yet then.. then there were those times when all three babies were laughing. Mama was dancing with a pair, and papa was making funny faces with the other. Times when he and Kyril were trying to feed them while the food got everywhere, the little ones just beside themselves seeing their big sister and big brother covered in mush. Times when he came in from doing outside chores and a pair of hands grabbed at him for a hug. Times when he got the beds ready while the others calmed each little bundle in the late evening, the tiny faces innocent and sweet with sleep...

Yeah, being a big brother was a tough job. It was frustrating, tiring, fun and wonderful! It was such a joy to help his parents out and watch the little ones develop and adjust to each new incoming. Maybe he would have one of his own someday? Oh, not any time soon, of course! Maybe one day. For now, it was nice to be able to help without the actual responsibility of them being his!

Prentice- Growth Quest Solo
Beast Charmer

Koril wanted to learn about it all! There were so many familiars and creatures running around to find and learn about; both those discovered and those undiscovered. Both were equally interesting to the eager boy. Still though, he hoped that perhaps he would be able to possibly discover one or two of those unknown creatures. Maybe even three? Or four? Five would be great! Oh, to be the adventurer to discover and reveal new creatures would be wonderous!

It had taken a lot of convincing, but now here he was, camped outside of town, just him and Flana. He wanted to practice a little, pretending he was in the forests of Jauhar on his hunt for knowledge, and for cute animals! A couple nights out was just what he needed to figure out how to start his journey.

Matori alone had many inhabitants crawling and running around to see. The bushi were neat with their large shells they carried around. The snapptrotter that looked as though it should lumber about, but was quick as could be. The alol with their strange, sticky feet. The zanteer, like Flana, adorable and fun! Oh, and the janarim with- wait, janarim were not native to Matori.

Koril blinked at the sight of the sharp edged animal walking across the path, following two shrouded figures down another, more overgrown path.

Oh! Someone visiting and exploring away from the crowd, perhaps? Koril followed eagerly after the mysterious pair. He’d never been down this way before, so he was excited to see what was there! Perhaps he should have woken Flana, but that would have meant going back to the tent, and possibly losing the janarim! As he caught up, the janarim glared back at him, but the two strangers were unaware of his presence. Slowly, muffled shouting could be heard, and there were torches lit up ahead through the trees. A few people with their faces covered like the pair he was following walked by, giving him shocked or confused looks.

Why was everyone covering their face? Should he be doing it, too? Just to be sure, he looped part of his scarf up over his nose. That should do it!

There were quite a few people gathered under some sort of tent, hollering loudly back and forth. Koril did not like the way everyone was shouting, but still approached out of curiosity.

“Hey! The hybrid additions are not until tomorrow. What did you bring that one along for?”

Hybrid additions? Koril looked toward the voice, but his arm was roughly grabbed.

“Are you following us, kid?” snarled one of the men that Koril had followed in. “What are you trying to do? Think you will go and whine to the authorities now that you have caught the bad men?”

Part of the group had turned to watch the ruckus and laughed, but Koril was dumbfounded. “I.. I didn’t come here to whine about anything,” he assured nervously, looking at his aggressor and the man who had pointed him out first. “I just wanted to see the janarim, really. I have never been this way, so-“

“Of course you’re not supposed to come down this way!” the first man said sharply, approaching and looking rather intimidating. “It looks like these fine folks here have been distressed by your stalking, hybrid.”

“Stalking?!” Koril yelped as he was pushed into the big man’s arms and lifted off his feet. “I was not stalking anyone! Just following to see what was here, because I’d never bee-!”

“We do not take kindly to strangers following around good folk who are harming no one.” The cloaked man looked over at those paying attention. “What say you, friends? Should we let this hybrid play early?”

A round of cheers and laughter set Koril’s skin on fire, and he struggled as he was carried through the crowd. Normally, playing sounded fun; this sounded quite unpleasant though. He tried to grab onto the man when he was tossed, but the cloak slid right off. He had just enough time to register the spots that marked the big man as Matorian before he landed on his back, his breath forced out from the impact.

“Okay folks, place your bets! Who will take this round?”

Rubbing his head, Koril sat up and looked around, his eyes filling with water. He was in some sort of pit, and inside the pit, pushed without regard to the edge of the enclosure, were dead and wounded animals. Zanteer, drow, kehtra, janarim, xaraan, and other animals he could not name... What was this place?! A snarling behind him made spin around, and he let out a yelp that brought more laughter from above. He was facing a zanteer that was clearly malnourished, its fur matted and eyes clouded. Even the pink fur could not hide the blood on it. It snarled at him again, but Koril couldn’t move. His legs would not support him now. “What have you done to it?!” he shrieked, looking up at the spectators with horror.

“Hey, mutt! Use this if you feel like your freak life is worth saving!”

A dagger nearly speared his hand where his nails dug into the ground. “What did you do?! You people are horrible!” That only earned more laughs from the crowd. They were... they were making animals fight? He looked back at the zanteer. It was leashed to one side, straining at its collar and leash to get at him. It was starved and hurt.. Who could do something like this?

He recalled the man claiming he would whine to the authorities... When he got out of here, he certainly would be telling someone! “These are our friends! Why are you hurting them? Why make them fight like this?”

The man now missing his cloak leaned over with a grin and held up a small bag that clinked when he shook it. “Why, for this, of course! Betting on fighters sparing is just such old taste and boring. This is where the real excitement is, kid. You should be happy to be a part of it. You know, you should be extra grateful, because we let you in early.”

Hybrid additions... Koril looked at the angry zanteer and finally managed to scoot back a few feet. “You’re making us fight the animals, too?”

One of the two he had followed in barked out a laugh in a husky feminine voice. “Oh, do not look at it that way, hybrid. You are just battling your own worthless kind. Animals, the lot of you! If you win, you get to keep some money yourself, you know.” The woman laughed and shrugged her arms. “Not that you will have any way to spend it, but the thought is there, right?”

Koril’s mind was just spinning. He had taken plenty of hassling in his short time for being a hybrid, but this... They were actually willing to let him die. They were willingly letting those creatures die. No, not just willingly... They were encouraging it. “You can’t do this!” he shouted, brushing the hot tears from his eyes. “They’re not just dumb animals! They have feelings, too! I’m not dumb, either!”

“Yeah, whatever you say, mutt. You had better start dancing if you want to keep yourself alive.” Another dagger was thrown, this time cutting the rope that held the angry zanteer in place. The wild-eyed creature leaped forward the instant it felt the tension of its restraints release.

There were some shouts of surprise from above, Koril screamed, and a flash of yellow barreled into the pink zanteer right before it could touch him. “Flana!!” A rock seemed to settle into his stomach as the two zanteer rolled around, hissing and snarling. More money was being passed around from above, cheers and jeers being shouted. The pink zanteer was tired and weak though, and Flana easily pinned it. Koril grabbed up the cloak that was still in his hand, and ran over to cover the pinned creature’s head. He had seen this done with nervous animals before, so maybe it would help? The creature continued to struggle, but Flana kept it pinned so that Koril could secure the cloak in place.

Above, the crowd had gone silent. Compassion in the ring was usually short-lived. Fear was the motivator they used in these fights, but this hybrid did not seem to be paying any attention to that fear. The dagger offered remained stuck in the ground where it had hit. “Hey! Those aren’t the rules!” someone shouted from the crowd, an irritated murmur rising. No bloodshed yet? What kind of battle was this? Still, curiosity kept anyone from intervening yet.

Koril cooed softly to the pink zanteer, trying to get it to calm down. Whether from actually calming down or simple fatigue, The zanteer stilled enough for Koril to reach into his pocket. Bread was not normally in the zanteer diet, but it was all he had. When he held it to the zanteer’s nose, it sniffed before snapping the morsel up. Koril was surprised he had all his fingers after that!

“Aww, lookit that. The animals ‘re all playin’ nice tegether~” The crowd, finally over its shock, broke out in laughter. “Hey, you said you wanted to see our janarim, right?” The crowd parted, and the brown plated janarim slid down into the pit.

Koril inhaled sharply, one hand going to each zanteer. How was he going to get out of this..? He held out the palm of his hand toward the addition. “H-hey there.. janarim.. you don’t have to be mean like those people...” His heart stopped when the terrifying creature leaped at him, but a shield flew down from above to knock the janarim off course. He knew that shield! “Papa!!”

A few hours later, Koril was tucked in bed with his scratches tended to and bandaged up with Flana next to him in a similar condition. “Papa said they caught almost everyone there. Isn’t that nice? We helped a lot of animals over there.” Patting Flana’s head, he sighed sadly. “Guess he was right to worry about me. Kyril says I’m always findin’ trouble. They’re never gonna let me outta their sight now.” Lips pressing, he sat up and gave Flana a smile. “No. They will eventually! There are lots of animal out there, and I’m gonna help them all! Everyone needs to know that you’re not a stupid beast.. that none of them are stupid beasts!” He giggled when Flana licked his arm and patted her head again. “Don’t worry. I know you’ll help me do it, too!”

Conclusion: Koril has always had a rather naïve view of the world. He hears and knows about the problems around him, but prefers to rather excessively not dwell on them. When he decided on becoming an animal researcher, he had thought it was be him and all of the animals playing nicely and friendly, like he does with Flana, his zanteer. With the realization that animals, like people, are dangerous when you’re on the wrong end of them, he has a much healthier respect for the path he has chosen. He is seeing that some animals need more than just researching; they need protecting. He wants to be one of those people. Not only that, but he has finally experienced a portion of the deeper hatred against hybrids, and this has given him a healthier view to be more wary of those who express such hatred as well. Normally with his family as protection when such adversaries come, he knows now that he definitely has to grow some before he can face it on his own. Despite seeing such darkness, he will remain the shining light that he has always been; just a little more tempered.
