Personality:
From a young age, Xilarn's family instilled in their children the notion that their race was better than all others, and that they in particular were superior to others in their race. Maybe they weren't noble, but stupid amounts of money hardly serve to make anyone 'better.' They were expected to work hard to be good at whatever they put their mind to (so long as it was a talent of some actual use) and surpass others doing the same thing. Despite feeling that he isn't as self absorbed and self righteous as his siblings, Xil does fall into the role of 'better-than-you' pretty easily. He does try, he does work hard, and he fully believes that has earned him at least bragging rights. He's egotistical enough to think that few are up to his standards, but critical enough to realize there's always places for him to improve.
Description:
Prentice
Xilarn has milk-chocolatey skin, with red clay eyes, a broad nose, and full lips. He has thick orange crystals along his shoulders, as well as larger ones across the top of his back. His hair is dark red-brown and styled in long dreads that he usually wears in a messy horsetail at the nape of his neck. His hair is roughly waist-length. Clothing tends to be baggy enough for comfortable movement, and he certainly doesn't go out of his way to be inconspicuous. He isn't especially tall, even by Earthling standards.
Lancer
Very little has changed over Xil's two years of living in the wild. Physical traits are still remarkably similar to when he was sixteen, from his skin tone to his hair, eyes, and crystals. He hasn't grown much taller, but has obtained a nice, fit build over his time spent in the jungle, particularly around his torso, shoulders, and arms. He also sports a deep scratch along his cheek that has scarred over. Clothing-wise, he almost always wears a cloak to keep himself as inconspicuous as possible and otherwise chooses clothes that won't suffocate him in the hot weather.
Spearman
Xilarn has matured substantially after spending years in the previously wild, savage lands of Tendaji. He's obtained a multitude of scratches and bruises and scarring from his exploits in hunting and trading with the natives, and continues to build upon muscle from his earlier years. Living in the cooler Sauti climate encourages more clothing, though Xilarn has always been partial to drapes and colorful, shining things. His hair continues to be styled in long dreads, similar to his younger years, though with a little added length.
Rider
It's been a decade and a half since Xilarn's young adult troubles. While previously hopeful, vocal, and eager, life had left him much more muted, reserved, and extremely pessimistic. It shows on his face and in his hair, as he's obtained a bit of grey in his still-lengthy locks. He has obtained black tribal-like tattoo-markings on each of his forearms for both of his magic spells, as well as wispy flaming leaves dancing down his neck, in remembrance of his deceased lover. As far as upholding appearance standards go, he doesn't. Less thought and care go into his attire than previous.

H I S T O R Y
Xilarn grew up in the capital of Oba, Sulburi, for the first fifteen years of his life. Despite the city's cramped and close-quarter living arrangements, he and his family actually had a home to themselves, just barely out of the main residential area. Xilarn has never hurt for food, activity, space, or even service. Of course, that was all normal to him, and he thought little of it. The family weren't nobles, but they did (and continue to) have quite a bit of military prestige that started with Xilarn's grandfather. Xil's brother and sister followed suit. Both Cether (Xil's older brother) and Ahdaia (older than Xilarn, but younger than Cether) joined in the efforts to aid in the war Oba started with the rest of Tendaji. Xilarn himself was less enthused with the activities. Fighting them on their land surrounded by their people seemed foolish.
When the Obans launched their attack, Cether and Ahdaia were eager to join in the first assault. Their father was more than pleased with this aggressive attitude, and he willingly uprooted the rest of his family to be closer to the fray. In no way was it anything like the comfortable, cushion-y lifestyle that he was accustomed to, and Xilarn instantly resented the decision. Everything he'd known for all his life completely gone, just so his oldest siblings would be closer to "home." If Tivrod could be called that.
Once the siblings returned, the only thing they talked about was their war stories. It would've been fine if the tales weren't repetitive and gory, and if his brother and sister didn't blatantly over-glorify themselves and talk down on beings they didn't even understand. Xil wasn't sympathetic to the other people in Tendaji, but he did believe learning more about their culture would simplify things in the long run. With this in mind, he set out to Jauhar to learn of these barbarians for himself.
He met a few of the natives, who, surprisingly, didn't try to kill him or even attack him. In fact, both of them helped him to survive, and even now he considers them both useful allies. Even so, the war raged on, and he became no closer to convincing anyone that they were going about it in the wrong way. Quite the opposite, in fact. He was caught in one of the Oban camps by his older brother. After blatantly refusing to fight and fleeing the encampment, Xilarn was considered a traitor. He also obtained a newfound, even more deep-seated hatred for his older brother, Cether.
The battles quickly came to a head, and Oba saw their defeat in the war. Xilarn was of little use to either party, despite his attempt to stay by his hybrid companion, Kennet's side. With the war over and no chance of returning peacefully home, Xil decided to set out for Sauti. He traversed Tale, met new people, but was overall satisfied to be settling somewhere new and unexplored. Sauti suited him and his needs. His new life would have no traces of the old; except for maybe a certain hybrid man who decided to show up after many months...
When Xilarn and Kennet's relationship grew stronger and more intimate, the Fire man chose to adopt an orphaned Wind child to bring forth into their home. Though initially the boy had little desire to get along with anyone, they soon developed a bond as close to father-son as Xilarn could hope for, particularly when, out of the blue, Kennet disappeared. It wasn't a walk in the park to raise a traumatized toddler on his own, but they managed, and Akiyal grew into a rambunctious, if not slightly rude and blatantly antagonistic young man.
In an attempt to introduce his son to the rest of his family, Xilarn brought Akiyal to Oba. Unfortunately, Xil's parents weren't especially pleased in his mating or child-rearing choices, and the day ended with more upset and more problems. Angry at his father, Aki left him with the threat of forever hating him if he followed, and Xilarn felt obligated to adhere to his wishes and remain in Oba.
And then came Damissan...
With time to kill and nothing better to do, Xilarn agreed to serve as Damis' guard for the duration of his voyage to spread knowledge of his new god. While the trip does not promise to be easy, it has so far proven to be far from dull. |

Draw all the attention to the loudmouths while the actually skilled combatants pick people off.'

'Like others of her race, her first instinct was to punch before talking. I can easily say she is the least favorite Alkidike I've ever met, mostly because she got her hits in, and it's because of her that I couldn't be next to Kennet in the battle... I think I might've enjoyed watching her take an arrow or two. How can the other Earthlings even stand Alkidike at all? They are imposible to be around.'

I have never seen more of an uncoordinated mess in my life, and despite my initial thoughts of 'keeping to myself,' I fought back. She had it coming. Are all Tendajians really this aggressive? Or perhaps it was just the timing.'

'Nyiim was sitting in the same tavern as I was just before the place was ransacked. He seemed cool, level-headed, and thoughtful, despite his tendency to stare... I may have started off on the wrong foot, but we didn't end on too sour a note, despite the day's activities. He's alright, as far as savages go, particularly so recently after the turn the world took. Despite my experiences with other Earthlings, they seem a mixed bag. Such is people, I suppose.'

In any event, I think I can appreciate her ideals, maybe. I don't know if I actually trust her or not, but at least the words she says are pretty, if nothing else. And she's apparently since become princess of Oba, since our meeting.'

'Though his presence was initially worrisome and very near to useless, it turns out raptri can be trained to do a healthy variety of tasks. Message delivery, combat, stealth, protection. And he can fly, of course. Over the years, Gadot has proved to be my most trusted and useful ally. We've formed a bond unlike anything I ever expected an animal to be capable of. Though, despite his age, he still has the tendencies of a young pup. A pup that doesn't like children, at that. He and Akiyal did not get along. But other than that, he is family.'
❤ Naeght: A large, fluffy, older, purple-sunset colored raptrix that Akiyal took from Xil for his own.
'Naeght has always been... very different than Gadot. He was already an adult when I first found him, and his loyalties seem much more difficult to win than his younger brethren's. To my surprise, Naeght was very eager to oversee the upkeep of Akiyal when the boy first came to my home, but that is virtually the extent of his training. He is likely far more intelligent than Gadot is, but also stubborn, regal, and independent. I hope he doesn't cause my boy any trouble on their adventures...'
My NPCs
❤ Aamil: Xilarn's father.
Short Description: A near-ancient man that Xilarn has not tried to keep contact with during his adventures through Tendaji. Aamil has lived in Oba for his entire life and is extremely jaded toward the vast majority of Tendaji. He has strong supremacy tendencies and is deeply bitter toward the 'savages' for freeing the Matori slaves from Oba's control. He resents the current Oban monarchy and dislikes anyone not of pure Fire Earthling blood. He has always worked in the military, as has most of the rest of his family for generations.
'I genuinely believe that my father might have been an okay guy when he was my age and his mentality was probably in-line with those of his time. But pride in his first children has turned him sour and stubbornness has jaded him to what is happening currently. Despite this, my father is my father, and ever since I was young, I have always wanted to do something worthy of his praise. Nowadays, I'm not so sure. If he cannot accept me and my lifestyle, it should not be my duty to change myself for him, and so I won't.'
❤ Ahdaia: Xilarn's older sister by three years.
Short Description: In their youngest years, Xilarn and Ahdaia were fairly close, though no more so than Ahdaia was with her older brother Cether. Since that time, she has followed the path her father expected, and become a combat healer for her people. This, unfortunately, brought her to spend more time with Cether than Xilarn, and the younger man resented her for it for a great many years. However, recently she has sought him out to make amends. They aren't expressly close as of yet, but she is trying to work toward people more personable toward her younger sibling. In her age, her once dark hair has started to grey. She has two daughters.
'It probably would've been easier to go on ignoring her. For so many years I was very good at that. I wrote to my mother when it suited me and ignored everything else because I wasn't interested in dealing with it. But my sister is a go-getter, when it suits her mood. And I suppose seeking me out suited her mood in the moment. She is... peppier than I remember her. I don't know if that's a result of her apparent motherhood or if she's adapted well to the drop in war-mindedness of the Oban regime or... Well, I don't know. ❤ Cantara: Xilarn's mother.
Short Description: A near-ancient woman that Xilarn lost contact with for many years after he set out into Tendaji. Cantara is two years older than her husband and sports the same diminutive stature of her youngest son (Xil). She has short, bristly dark hair and clear red eyes, as well as soft, more rotund curves. She doesn't generally seem to be in bad spirits. Her marriage was arranged to Aamil while she was fairly young, so she has never once left Oba. Tara is the most soft-spoken of her family.
'I probably shouldn't rank my family, but my mother is my favorite. She's less hard-headed and more thoughtful than all the others. She doesn't charge into things, she doesn't bite off more than she can chew. She's the easiest to please, the easiest to get attention from, and the easiest to get along with. She's still completely sold on Cether and Ahdaia's endeavors, but such is a mother's duty. We wrote to each other many times during my absence from home, and I would never want to see my mother hurt.'
❤ Cether: Xilarn's older brother by five years.
Short Description: Xilarn and Cether have been at odds since before they were old enough to effectively communicate. Cether is the first born and favored child, having taken up the same arms as his father and grandfather to help support his country in the war. He has always had the 'natural talent' that Xilarn lacks in the combat arts and was always exceptionally vocal about his abilities. He supported (and still does, to some extent) the old king and has always had a fondness for bloody displays. His skin, hair, and eyes are darker than Xilarn's, and he has always been taller.
'Cether is by far the worst person any soul could have the unfortunance of meeting. He puts on a good show for the crowd of course: calm, tactical, charming, thoughtful. It's all a great act, because he's still an inconsiderate, murderous, backstabbing, haughty, know-it-all. I have not yet forgiven him for trying to turn me in as a traitor, back when we were teenagers. And why should I? He's made just as many attempts at contacting me as I've made to him. Clearly neither of us are looking for a change in our relationship at this stage.'
❤ Janella: A Wind woman that lives in Kesris with Xil.
Short Description: A single mom with one full-blooded Wind boy. She's younger than Xilarn, but full of spunk and spit and not willing to take nothing from nobody. She's short with a full figure and a long, curly mass of hair that she tries to keep pinned back. She's also very expressive in every way, being flamboyant with both her facial expressions and body gestures. She's great with kids and volunteers to babysit for anyone who needs it.
'Janella was a great source of information and comfort when I first brought Akiyal into my family, and she's continued to be very supportive throughout his life. I had my reservations about moving to a settlement inhabited almost solely by Wind merchants, and I thought they'd be fairly unwelcoming of me, but... Janella has never been anything but kind. She's a good, dependable person, and her friendship is invaluable.'
❤ Kan: Janella's son. He is one year Akiyal's senior.
Short Description: A loud and rambunctious little lad that is smaller than Akiyal, despite being older. Akiyal and Kan terrorized Kesris in their very young years, often disrupting shopkeepers and merchants with their loud voices and thieving ways and leaving Xil to try and tidy the mess. Fortunately, neither of them were very good thieves and they were often caught and sent home together. Time has mellowed them, but the young boys are still close.
'Kan is nearly the same age as my own boy, and I will always be forever thankful that Aki at least had one close friend to keep him entertained when I was not suitable for the job. Kan is a bit softer spoken, almost a pushover, I'm afraid, and I thought that would be good for Aki to maybe learn to keep himself... more contained. It did sort of backfire. Kan never seemed to mind, but I do feel a little bad for him, on occasion.' |
