Name: Kian (Was previously known as Ciarán)
Stage: Third (Sage)
Path -> Mystic (runes)
Race: Shifter/Ice Hybrid
Gender: Male
3 Base Traits: Shrewd, Graceful, Fearless
Personality: Kian was raised in a cold household where he was always on his toes due to his mother's tight control. Because of that he learned that in order to have some freedom he had to use his cunning in order to manipulate the events and people around him. Servants were taught to help hide his tracks from his mother due to the fact that his kindness gained their trust (it also helps when he helps them cover any mistakes before his mother finds them… such as broken vases, ruined food, and etc.). He kept on top of his studies as well in order to prove himself as capable in his mother’s eyes. In such a world it was often easy to fall into traps of kindness and so Kian has learned to be more perceptive of other's true motives. In its own way, however, Kian does sometimes appear too distant when lost in thought. Often some will paint him as a cold personality unless they learn better.

Music and grace were born into his soul. Not only did Kian take after his father in appearances but also gained his musical abilities. This includes the grace of a dancer which is seen in Kian’s movements. Everything about him is graceful even his walk or the way he falls when he slips. It is a double edged sword for him, however, as he unnaturally attracts more attention than wanted just by how he moves. Like a cobra he can dance anyone into his coils while on the other hand he can slip away unnoticed.

He has no fear. Kian's life has toughened his heart and made him unshakable. While his bold spirit may keep him on top of things and give him the courage to play the dangerous games that he does in life it also lets him to fall into trouble easier than most. This is included when he jumped in the way of his mother in order to protect his twin sister the night she was banished from home. Because of that he sports a lovely scar going from his neck all the way down past his collar bone.

Realizing his freedom has only fed his reckless spirit. After finally gaining this courage that allowed him to shatter the chains (mental and somewhat physical) his mother placed around him, what was Ciaran has changed into Kian who feels at times feels invincible. While before his actions were due to caring nothing for his life, he now has a confidence in his ability to face any challenge.
Description: Kian resembles his father more than his ice mother by having shifter skin and the stones of a shifter. His ears, however, represent his ice heritage by being long and elegant. Also, his gaze is identical with his twin, Talisia.

Other than that he has a lean body and is surprisingly tall for an earthing (5'8ish).
Clothing: He usually wears gypsy clothing, light and loose for traveling.

Accessories: Around his neck is usually some form of choker and if possible he has beads/feathers in his hair and several piercings in his long ears *even a dangling one with a gem would be nice for his ears. The main piece that he always will wear is a necklace that he also inherited from his father. This necklace is long and hangs down from his neck while sporting a moon/sun pendant. *it's nearly identical to the one Talisia wears

Interesting facts
-He can project his voice anywhere and copy accents and tones easily.
-Just like his sister his silver eye will darken from their shifter blood while the other stays golden.
-He feels more alive under the sunlight than his sister, but also loves the moonlight as their father did.
-When irritated he tends to scratch lightly at his temples before moving to play with a strand of hair while thinking.
- His name Ciaran is from "Little Dark One" since he shared the same looks as his father. However, in order to have a new life he had to toss away his old name so he chose Kian since he has endured.
-Even with Nerio's help, Kian still suffers from night terrors which haunt him with memories of his mother and his childhood. Such things make him very wary of others because of such constant reminders of his trauma it is rare for anyone to truly gain his trust anymore.

History:
Kian's story is shared with his twin Talisia .

However, this is the rest of his side of the story...
User Image

Both twins came from the union of a gypsy shifter and the ice woman who had caught him in her trap. However, while Talisia was often rejected by their mother Ciarán found himself kept close to Nivedita. After all, unlike his sister who took after their mother, Ciarán was basically a replica of their father. While he once sought to play with his father and sister the boy quickly learned that it was only with his intervention that Talisia would be spared. While Kaleo spent more time with his daughter, Ciarán found himself constantly playing music to distract their mother from her jealous rage.

Every day held a new story for them, depending on their mother’s mood. While Nivedita was away on business the trio would be happy and play together without fear. While their father was away with their mother it was then that both Ciarán and Talisia took the time to bond. He learned to teach her then the things he had been taught while away from her and to also wipe the tears that fell onto her cheeks without their mother’s love.

In those moments that he did share with his father and sister Ciarán was always happy. His father taught him to love music and dance, a rare light in his childhood of strict rulings and darkness. Music quickly became his passion and he found himself sneaking off night after night to practice or to show his sad and tired sister a new melody to cheer her spirits. It was during such times that Ciarán even managed to make a friend with a merchant’s son that lived in the area. From him Ciarán even learned about magic and how the world was much different outside of his home. Eresin had been his name, but Ciarán’s time with him had been short due to the tragedy looming over the horizon.

Kaleo was dead.

When Kaleo died Ciarán found his freedom completely ripped away. His mother found that his similar looks to their father could soften the blow of losing the shifter she had loved and obsessed over. Often he would spend many nights taming her anger so that his sister could be spared from his mother's rampant jealous and despair. So while he appeared pampered and cherished, the secrets of his troubled world started to reflect in the scars on his back.

His twin sister, though, was his secret fuel to get him through every day. Seeing the rare smiles he gave her and the few fleeting moments he could hold her in his arms was enough to keep him going. After all without him who would stop their mother from hurting his dear twin? It was only Talisia's presence which tamed the darkness growing inside of his heart.

Months passed and Ciarán's watchful eye never left his sister's side. His studying increased and he found that he could begin to outmaneuver his mother's actions. For every step she made to secure him to her side the boy would obey while secretly gaining more freedom. The less she doubted his ability and desire to contest her will, the more she lowered her guard. He was her ideal son, but on the inside he despised her. He wanted nothing more than to take Talisia and flee into the hills.

Still he never could find the perfect opportunity to escape. Instead Ciarán kept practicing his role in the life that Nivedita wanted for him. All he could do was secretly gift Talisia small things and to also give her hope in the shelter he made for her and her animals. As long as he could keep her safe his own personal hell was worth it. He had to take care. Once he was caught in an attempt to leave with his sister and his mother's punishment kept him chained in the darkest rooms of their home for days. Others were told that he was off on a trip, but inside those cold walls the boy was trapped. Even as years blurred those memories, the scars remained. Since then he learned to be extra careful, even harsh towards his sister at times. For both of their sakes...

Life was cruel, but the worst night finally came to life. When their mother found Talisia’s hidden shelter and Silva, the raptrix that his sister had adopted since helping it to recover from injuries, the shield that Ciarán had desperately created for his sister broke. Nivedita was infuriated that her daughter dared to defy her rules. Reaching out she had slashed over and over in the air with the dagger, but it was Ciarán who she dug the blade into instead.

He had pushed Talisia away and told her to run while their mother stood in shock at the damage she had done to her son, her replacement "Kaleo". Yes, before she had tortured him and even chained him...but she never wanted to kill him. She had already lost her lover once, to lose her son would destroy her. Her despair at his severe wounds allowed his sister to escape, but as he recovered and she saw he was no longer near death his punishment resumed. Even more so because of the loss of her daughter due to his foolish actions. How dare he choose Talisia over her! Just as Kaleo had done before him! What did that wretch have that she didn’t? Blood be cursed! She should have just destroyed her a long time ago! Finally Nivedita’s mind, once consumed by grief and rage, had completely snapped at the fear of losing Ciarán.

Eventually something had to change.

Without Talisia to keep him calm, Ciarán started to drift further into the darkness that had been lingering in his own heart. No affection remained for this woman, years of blood and tears had seen to that. And in that darkness, without his sister to give him a reason to live a secret lock inside of him broke. Without it a power started to shine, a power that could destroy many things including himself. Before as a child he had felt it, long ago when he could express himself in music with his father, and now it was back. That natural energy he found in the world around him....that magic which flooded his veins. Music, it seemed, was not his truest calling at all. Once, perhaps it may have been, but desperate times awaken even the most secretive part of men.

It would take time to recover and to learn how to unleash it, but he could learn…

Talisia had been gone for weeks now and his body felt the burdens of it. During this time a great battle was brewing outside in Tendaji as Alkilides fought against the other races, even their own sisters. Yet, a greater battle was being fought inside the walls of Nivedita's own home. Insanity had completely taken over the woman's mind and her abuse of Ciarán was growing. Important business gave him relief from her as she was called away for a few days...and in those few days he gained strength. Even while chained up in the cursed prison of his childhood the male rested. And while his blood dried on the floors and on his back he felt it.

That burning sensation was back. The more he concentrated the more the brilliant blue lights flashed in his sight. What it was, was a mystery to some but his knowledge his extensive studying as a child revealed the magic. For years he had hidden it, kept it suppressed so he could stay with Talisia rather than being sent off to train under some mage. Yet, in secret it was less worry of leaving but more so of destruction. The anger, the darkness inside that made him forget the beauty of life had loomed. While he never cared about himself his fears for Talisia had kept the monster at bay.

But now...she was gone, she was free.

And he was alone and without his sister's love those restrictions fled. And as his mother, no that monster, came back for him she found a surprise. You will not abuse me any longer. Magic, raw and free in its power, flooded out of him. A blind rage, he could barely remember the day if someone asked him, took over and all he knew was that in the next few hours not only was he out of those chains he was far from his childhood home and prison.

Not caring to go back and see what exactly had happened Ciarán took up his belongings and left the home. He was burnt out. Honestly how the boy survived was lost in that fog. He hadn’t cared if he died, he just wanted to end the nightmare. While he prayed for Talisia’s happiness he had cared nothing for himself. As long as she was free he was thankful. Perhaps if his soul could be redeemed then he may find her again in the next life...as he stumbled through the deep snows the boy actually braced himself for death. Finally it was time for that sweet release…

Destiny had other plans for him. A mage, known as Nerio, found the boy half alive in the ice. Without hesitation he took the boy into his home and helped him to recover. Surprised at the scars on his back and the more recent wounds the mage listened to the boy’s tale as he began to recover.

“I can’t stay here.”

“I know. I’m not planning on keeping you here either.”

“Good.”

Nerio had laughed, “I’m taking you out of Zena with me.”

Surprise had flickered across Ciarán’s features, but the boy found himself suddenly apprenticed to this mage. While they traveled he found himself taking on a new name, Kian. It was Kian who posed as the musician, a traveling gypsy who moved through the lands with the caravans. His music slowly began to take on a tune again. Still while promising hope and freedom a darkness still constantly lurks behind...the burden of the past was too harsh on his heart and even Kian still slips into "Ciaran" at times. Even under Nerio's watchful gaze rumors of a destructive mage or an attractive male who causes trouble out on the road began to arise...

While Nerio helped Kian to physically recover the emotional and mental scars remain. Without Talisia to help keep the darkness away, Kian has shrouded his true self in ice while leaving his alter-ego, his mask, on the outside to please others. Violent nightmares still haunt him from his mother's abuse, but he has grown stronger. Magic now floods his veins and he is determined to learn as much as possible so that chains never again will bind him. Even at the cost of others...

Akemi was given to Kian as a pup by Nerio. While originally he questioned this part of his "training" by taking care of the raptrix Kian actually has become attached to the beast. Akemi tends to be very passionate in protecting Kian from others and would fight against anything for him.

Class Quest (To Stage 2)

[Basically, it's the story of how Ciaran became Kian and his decision to break a promise made long ago and to instead embrace his magic. A majority of this post consists of his scattered memories from those times while tying into his current life.]

A raptrix howling in anger at the moon, a frightened girl with his eyes running, the cold feeling of his blood freezing against his warm skin on that moonlit night…

It had been those images from that travesty which had kept running through his mind. Every moment his thoughts were haunted with the reminder of how the life he had fought for, bled for just simply shattered. Talisia…Tally! Sometimes the nightmares would shift from his mother stabbing him to his twin actually being the culprit. Even then that dream was nowhere near as devastating as the nightmare that had his sister stabbed in his place. The thought of her death always broke him, it had been her misery which had truly chained him to this place. His mother, Nivedita, held no power over him without his twin sister.

Perhaps then it was the madness of the nightmares that allowed the shred of power to reemerge.
------
“Is magic bad, papa?” In that memory lay the image of Kaleo, his father, and his dearest sister, Talisia. All three of them had taken the day to wander in the expanse of woods behind their home. It was a rare day without Nivedita and the trio took full advantage of it. Tally had convinced them that a picnic was perfect on a day like this and so their father had gladly taken his younglings out.

As they ate their father told them stories from his travels and eventually he had spoken of a traveling mage, “Magic bad?” Kaleo had shaken his head with a small smile, “I’m not certain about that. Some may use it for scary purposes and it can be feared in battle, but I’ve yet to have a bad encounter with it.”

“oh.” Talisia had pouted slightly, “I still don’t like it. Momma met with some scary men once and the servants whispered they were sorcerers. I didn’t like them at all.”

Sitting next to his twin Ciaran had frozen in place. He remembered that day. His mother had almost caught him playing around with the strange lights and had brought in those men as an example….of what he should never become. His sister had missed most of their visit, of the cries from punished strangers that echoed from the lower rooms of their grand home. He knew one thing…you didn’t make his mother angry else she would let the sorcerers come visit you. Also, hearing that his sister disliked them? Well that secured the feeling of avoiding anything magical. Even if Eresin had told him some good things about magic…Ciaran had to shake them off. Never again will I even consider it! The last thing he ever wanted was for Tally to hate him.

It was that day when he looked at his father, “Papa, can you teach me music?” Ciaran would keep himself so busy that his mind wouldn’t wander to such awful ideas again. Music, not magic would become his passion as it was the thing that truly brought a smile to his twin’s face.

The memory faded into a pool of blood and Ciaran found himself waking up in chains once more. Talisia! He hoped in his heart that she had run far, far away from this hellish place. Straining against the chains the young hybrid had yelled at the walls the first day he woke up. Just kill me! Just do it! He had tried to piss her off beyond repair, but she refused to let him have that sweet release. Begging was out of the option, he refused to go that low. He thought of all he could, mentioning his deceased father and even his sister, but none of those things would stir his mother to kill him. She would gladly maul his back or consider crippling his feet, but never kill him. Instead her mistake that night of slashing his neck open instead of Talisia’s had only secured her desire to keep him.

Is this my eternal torment? Days continued and in a haze Ciaran waited. Yet, the more he was left alone with the nightmares the more something inside of him stirred. The memory of his silent promise to Talisia was slowly shattering and instead the images he had secretly read in books came to mind. If his twin was gone what was to stop him now? He didn’t have to worry about her disgust, she was free now and he would never see her again.

He had been the perfect son in order to protect his sister, but now that Talisia was free…what was the point?

Don’t you dare threaten her. His anger continuously began to build up as days passed. Eventually even his deepest wounds had started to fully heal. Of course his mental wounds were the opposite of his body and had instead of healing begun to fester. What was the point of holding back now? What if Nivedita wanted to go after his sister? Would she chain him again by threats against Talisia? I refuse to allow that. Such thoughts destroyed the restraints he had built up over the years. He was old enough now that his true essence called to him and from the shadows of the deepest part of his tormented soul a light began to shine.

This light was far more dangerous than the shadows of sleep.

“Forgive me, Talisia…” Ciaran had stared up at the ceiling with watery eyes, “I can’t be with you, nor would you want to know me after this.” All those years had been a façade, he was never meant to become a bard. That had been his hope in keeping his father’s spirit alive. A hope that faltered now and finally crumbled as that magic sparked to life. You shouldn’t have left me alone so long to heal, Nivedita. She was going to regret not killing him…

Reaching out with his fingers almost like claws, Ciaran had moved to carve into the stones around him. From that his memory became a fog. All that he knew was that days later he was crawling through snow with his blood turning everything white into scarlet.

Let me have this sweet release, I’m ready for death.

That had been his original decision. While he didn’t remember what had happened the hybrid had accepted his fate. Perhaps in the next life he could finally have that peace he once longed for. A family to love even. Now his only happiness was in knowing that his twin, Talisia, was free. As long as she was safe then he could die in peace. Smiling at the thought the hybrid had tumbled down towards a snowy ravine…

At least that was his belief. How am I here now? Blinking through a haze the hybrid reached out his shaking hands and glanced down. Instantly brilliant lights exploded in his mind as snippets of memories roared into life. One moment he was worn down and bleeding, the next he was desperately carving into the stone of his cell, and then after days of solitude the doors had opened….his desperation to destroy an evil had allowed him to make those stones glow…but then what? All he could remember was stumbling in the snow, hoping to find some ravine to bury his body in. I’m supposed to be dead, why didn’t I die then? He had wanted to find freedom in the next life while destroying the threat to his twin’s own new found freedom. Without their mother around there was no one left to drag Talisia back into that misery.

And without him there would be no more haunting memories of that time, “I wanted freedom not this…” As his vision returned Ciaran glanced at the bandages wrapped along his body. Everything felt so tender, so strained. He winced as he tried to sit up in the bed, but his body rebelled against him. At least that much made sense. Still Ciaran couldn’t help cursing as his third attempt finally allowed him a sitting position.

A voice interrupted his thoughts, “What? The bed isn’t comfortable enough?” An older man smiled at him from the doorway.

“Who are you?” He had glared at the stranger. While he was obviously from Zena, the man wasn’t anyone he had seen before.

“Nerio.” The man did a fake bow, “I found you as a lump of ice and decided you might want to thaw. Those wounds were too nasty to leave alone.”

“That was the point.” Ciaran sighed, “I was supposed to be left alone.”

“You look pretty young for someone with a death wish.”

“If only you knew.”

“Hey, no matter what you’ll be alright now.” The man had surprised him with a touch to the shoulder, the first real tender touch he had from an outsider in years. It was a parent’s touch, something he had almost forgotten. And those eyes…they held more mercy than he had ever seen before. Weak and confused, Ciaran finally broke. That simple touch had stirred emotions long forgotten, emotions that had stirred with the memory of his father. Finally he found someone other than his twin who looked at him with sincere concern.

Later once he heard that the man who had saved his life was a sorcerer and that not all magic was corrupted and used for ill intent, Ciaran made his decision, “Nerio can you teach me magic?” Instead of reaching out towards his father to teach him the melodies of life, Ciaran now reached out to another to teach him the harmony of magic.
---------
Weeks later he had stood on the cliffs looking at Zena one last time before leaving, “You really think it’ll be okay?” He asked as he glanced over towards Nerio with a small smile. Even then his gaze was full of hesitation and doubt. This man had taught him that new beginnings were possible and that he could very well have a chance in this world….yet a shadow secretly persisted over his heart. At least he was giving life a chance, if not himself just yet.

“Did I not revive you from the dead?”

“A new life, huh?”

“A new life, a new purpose, a new name…come Kian. We need to get moving.”

Kian.

It was true, he now had a new name to cover up the dirty past.

And it wasn’t like embracing magic had been the worst decision of his life. Actually finding the courage to embrace the power inside of him had allowed him to truly become reborn in this way. It, not death, had been the true destroyer of his chains in the end.

And he would never hesitate to use his power again….

Even now as he stood in Sauti the hybrid found himself facing a few unconscious thugs. Before I might have bloodied my fist to attack you, but this was too simple. His gaze gleamed with a dangerous light before noise caught his attention.

“Mister! Did you actually do it?” An apprentice wind girl held onto her younger brother’s hand, “Can we actually go home now?”

Kian actually smiled and reached out to ruffle the girl’s hair, “You should be safe. I doubt they’ll be bothering you ever again. You should go to your mother now, quick as you can.”

“Thank you!” Smiling she waved before twisting with her brother to race down the path and out of sight.

Am I really such a bad person? He glanced down at his hands before closing them into fists. Perhaps his secret reputation on the road wasn’t the best, but he could rest easily knowing that he could take care of some threats. It’s better this way… He needed no fame or glory. He just wanted more power. Kian had decided after all that he would train and become much stronger so that the Ciaran of his past would truly be no more.

Kian. A new name, a new life.

Stage 2 - Solo 1 - A furry companion and friend

It had been another annoying afternoon of performances. Usually he got away with one song here and there, but tonight the mage had been asked to come back to the stage. Another was sick they claimed and so he would have to take her spot. More like having some fun with a rogue she met. That would sound more like it. Yet, he had only shaken his head before allowing them to drag him along.

Hours seemed to pass with music and finally the crowds died out leaving the male alone to this thoughts. Finally he could rest and relax. They weren’t leaving for the next couple of days, so there was no room for his sort of ‘fun’ until then. It was only when he knew his tracks would be covered that he willingly would go out and find battles.

As Kian walked around the caravan for the night, a loud whooshing of wings caught his attention. “Akemi.” The mage smiled as he reached a hand out towards the protective raptrix, “Did you not find anything amusing while you were out?” His gaze studied the creature as he gently traced a finger along her neck. Every feather seemed in place. No fighting, that’s good. Not that he minded, the raptrix needed every moment to get stronger as well.

It was amazing how quickly she had grown in just a couple of years.

Settling down by a tree, the hybrid allowed for the young raptrix to lay across his lap. Silva would be bigger than her. The thought startled him. He had almost forgotten about Talisia’s own raptrix. The silver and white beast had been with his sister since several years back…his gaze softened at the thought. She had left Zena several years ago and she had found Silva several before then. Akemi was definitely at least, five years younger.

In fact she had only been a year old when his mentor had passed the bundle of fur to him. Kian remembered the event rather fondly. At first he had been offended, but then things had changed…

Standing in the snows of Zena, the recently healed mage had scoffed at their traveling party. “You want me to blend in as a gypsy?” His gaze narrowed, “I don’t trust any of them.” They weren’t even all from Zena, some were obviously from Sauti and Tale, while another seemed darker. Was that what an Oban looked like? Kian could only shake his head. It looked like more trouble than it was worth to him.

“Well then it’s a good chance for you to learn to keep your defense up.” Nerio had smirked, “Just work with me. We’ll travel through Tendaji smoothly this way.”

“If you say so.” Kian brushed some snow from his new outfit before glancing over at the older man, “Do I get a lesson today or is it another day of doing your chores?”

“Neither, actually.”

Kian had raised an eyebrow as the sorcerer disappeared. It was a few moments later that he returned with the little ball of fur, “Her name is Akemi, but she’s your new charge. Take care of her and maybe you’ll have a familiar worth practicing with.”

“I doubt she’ll be casting spells anytime soon.” He wanted to sneer at the gift, but the memory of his twin’s reaction to such a present stilled him. She would have been overjoyed to have another creature to take care of.

The memories fluttered through his mind without warning…

Ciaran! The girl had danced up to him in their family’s gardens, I found a roati today! It was injured but I helped it~ Her gaze beamed happily, Aren’t you proud? I can show you later…when mama is away of course.

Creature after creature, his twin had taken care of them all. Only Silva had stayed with his sister, but he was thankful for the creature. It had been with the raptrix that he had entrusted his sister’s safety. At least with those claws and fangs protecting her he could believe that she could make it through Tendaji. Towards Jauhar, the place of their father’s home. He had always promised to take her there after all. They would leave these snowy mountains and head to warmer lands, a brighter future.

So much for that.

At least Talisia still had a chance. Returning to the present, Kian had just accepted the bundle.

Weeks of awful training experiences and a rampaging puppy had kept him busy while they left Zena. In fact, Kian had almost believed himself to be a beast charmer rather than mage most days. But then as time progressed his curses thrown at the raptrix would soften. His first outing after all had almost been a disaster….

In a field surrounded by outlaws, Kian had stood his ground. Magic flared to life around him, but he tried to contain it. These pests weren’t worth his powers…he would rather just pound some sense into them.

They, however, had other ideas about how easily they would fall.

Eventually as the mage took a defensive step back to avoid another punch, the sky churned with unusual wind. Like a bolt from the clouds, Akemi came barreling down. Growling the raptrix had taken his side and risked her own life in order to protect him. It was from that fight on that he realized he had made a friend. Someone who he could rely on and trust.

For some strange reason she had bonded with him and would continue to watch over him no matter what. From one strange creature to the next, right? He glanced towards her sleepy bi-colored eyes with a faint smile. Now that she was older it was rare for her to want to lay on his lap so he tolerated it. It was rather relaxing, almost like a warm blanket. That in mind, Kian laid his head back against the tree and began to sleep.

Only in moments like these could he sleep without worries of nightmares, Akemi made certain of that.

Stage 2 - Solo 2 - Light and Dark

Kian had almost run away.

It was a silly thought that he out of all people would want to run away from something, but the sight of his sister had frozen him to the spot. Never had he lingered on the thought of reuniting with his twin because of the shame that hid in his heart. He had done so much to protect her before, but once she had ran away to freedom his whole life had changed. He had become less reserved about his darker instincts and had even smeared the walls of their home with her blood. Not that he believed his twin would miss such a monster, but the fact was that in destroying a monster he felt as if he had become one himself. After all he hadn’t stopped there. Even outside of Zena he had destroyed other opponents and while the first few stuck with him the rest had become a blur in his memory.

How would she, a gentle healer, even deal with that knowledge?

Yet, as he had spotted her through the tree’s Kian felt his breath hitch. She had grown, as expected since it had been years, but she had grown in a way that was more mature and confident than before. He never expected to see his quiet, gentle sister with such a strong walk and bold gaze. Silva had been with her, but now there were others. So many beasts dedicated to his sister, while she seemed even more than ready to protect them. No longer was she a healer, but now she was also a protector. She had seen battle that much he could tell. Still, her gaze lacked that bloodlust that reflected so strongly in his own.

Where had he gone wrong?

Perching on the higher limbs of a tree, Kian sighed. His hands when he held them out before his face seemed perfectly normal. Yet, if one could see all the damage he had inflicted on others on his skin then the dark would be permanently stained a deep scarlet. Not that he had went out of his way against the innocent. Kian frowned as he tucked his hands behind him, “Am I trying to defend myself?” What a foolish thought.

He had lied, manipulated, and played with the hearts of others. Even if he had taken a few moments here and there to defend the weaker ones of this world, it did nothing for the darkness in his own heart. While his twin glowed with life and hope, his spirit seemed to devour it and relish each moment that their screams could be heard. The question was…was it Nivedita’s blood in him that reacted in such a way? Or was it the curse of the magic that ran through his veins? His father had been such a gentle figure who seemingly had no cares in the world. Once he had wanted to be such a spirit, but years of torment had warped those ideals.

Just the faint memories brought his lips up in a smirk of bitter amusement. How naïve and foolish he had been. Who was he to tell his sister that he could easily slip them out of their home and out of Zena? His only attempt had resulted in painful separation from his twin and had given him the first of many scars that laced across his back. Perhaps if their father had survived instead of dying in the cold…Kian’s face creased in a frown. “At least we finally managed to get away.” Even if he had to wait months after his sister’s own departure. His fingers reached up to touch at his neck where the deepest of scars lingered. It was no wonder that she had left without pause. Not only had he yelled at her to leave, but she had also witnessed him dying in the snows.

Even he had thought of himself as dead that night. The thought sent a rare shudder down his spine. It wasn’t that he was afraid of dying, but rather of how close his twin had been to death. If he had hesitated even one second then it would have been her that had been left behind in the snows. The thought made his gaze harden. He would have never done such a thing. If that had happened then perhaps it would have been even that night that his magic would have exploded inside of him. Instead that glorious moment hadn’t occurred until months later.

And then Nerio had rescued him. How the older ice sorcerer had convinced him to go along with such a silly venture across Tendaji, Kian would never know. But the man had managed to somehow touch the more hidden parts of his heart. He was the only one that kian could trust as a mentor. That rare moment of true compassion…it had earned his agreement, if not even some trust from the wary hybrid. But who knew that his nephew’s appearance would also lead Talisia to him?

Out of all things…

He had caught sight of them in the evening as they went into Jauhar, but the hybrid had pulled back into the shadows. From then on he had waited to see how close she would come to him. Once he realized she wasn’t alone, however, Kian’s interest had been perked. Who was the runt that traveled with his twin? He seemed so close to her as well…then it clicked. Nerio was waiting on his nephew to come and begin training as a mage.

Was that really Eresin?

A smile had flickered in the darkness. I suppose fate really doesn’t want us apart. Talisia and then his childhood friend, Eresin. Their threads of fate seemed tightly intertwined. It made him want to rebel, but the love that he fostered for his sister was strong. Perhaps even strong enough to reign in the monster he could become? It was a possibility, but doubt festered in his heart. He had done so much….so many things that she would shun him for. It was such thoughts that kept him at bay in the shadows and forced him to wait for the moment that he could approach Eresin without his sister’s gaze nearby.

For now he would wait and try his best to figure out the mess his mind had become after sighting her. He didn’t want to burden her with his stained spirit yet he didn’t want to ignore her. The urge to run up to her and ruffle her hair while holding her close…his twin, his sister…his other half. They had been through so much together, but he felt as if the darkness had claimed him while the light existed for her. In shame he decided to bide his time and to continue hiding…

That was for the best, right?

Growth Solo

A Light in the Darkness?

[In this solo Kian faces the fact that he can no longer run away from his twin, Talisia. In doing so he must realize that perhaps he is not completely hopeless and that instead there is still a shard of good in him. While he does originally attempt to run away before meeting his twin again, after so many years apart, he runs into a couple who need assistance. Not one to deny aid to those in need Kian assists them while realizing that perhaps protecting others does not make one weak. Instead it can be used to give others strength as those bonds between friends/family can give one determination. As Eresin’s words from their recent encounter haunt him along with the faces of those he has helped out throughout the years roaming Tendaji Kian decides that perhaps even he can find another chance at life. With this in mind he turns back to Jauhar and is prepared to not only face his twin, but himself. It has become time for him to truly realize his potential and to find that he can change for the better.

After this he will start to try his best to not be completely destructive while it allows him to reunite with Talisia. This also marks the beginning of his true training under his mentor, Nerio. And also the fact that he is accepting Eresin as a fellow mage and friend. ]

Warning: Sappy content below...

Kian was on the move again. This time though he traveled alone without mentor or caravan. His steps along with his mind were confused and unfocused as he mulled multiple things over in his mind. Sure he was leaving Jauhar now, almost like a convict into the night, but he had many things there that still bothered him. It was a lot to think about and he wanted to do it on his own…

Just recently, he had been content spending his days wandering as a rogue who played by day and fought by night. Others may have felt that they had a purpose in this world, but his was to just simply wander and destroy. He was a shadow vigilante and that was all he knew. His previous life had only engulfed him in chains of fear and terror, but he had shattered those long ago. Now he did as he pleased with no remorse. Traveling with his mentor and the caravan of gypsies had proved amusing in the least. They taught him things and allowed him to wander without question. If he disappeared into the night air then that was to be expected. Everyone knew better than to question it and even Nerio respected his space. No one expected him to falter or to feel guilt for his decisions.

Then Eresin’s arrival had changed everything. At first Kian had looked forward to reuniting with his childhood friend as he needed a training partner, but after discovering that Eresin was also traveling with his twin Kian hesitated. He hadn’t seen Taliisa in years and so much had changed since then…she seemed so much more mature and changed. Yet, she had that gentle heart still and it amazed him to see it. Her light had always been such a blessing on the world while he….

Was he not a monster?

The sudden thought shattered him. What would she even want to do with him? Such thoughts tormented the hybrid. Once he had found freedom in the darkness that grew within his spirit. Because of it he could grow more and more powerful. Who needed emotions and attachments? All they did was hold one back from accomplishing their greater strength. He had never his loss a sacrifice before. Talisia was safe and far away from Zena. That was all that he had cared about in the past. So what did it matter if his hands continued to be bloodstained? It was far easier to just sink into the darkness, struggling against it only brought back past memories and pain. The thought made him frown. It just didn’t make sense….opening yourself up to bonds and love only brought pain and ruin. It was a weakness, not a strength.

So why was it when he watched Eresin and Nerio’s reunion that the faintest stabbing pains had went through his chest? Couldn’t that have been him and Talisia? Once, years ago, he would have given anything to hold his dear sister in his arms again. Over time he had given up any such hopes as his sins continued to build up. Her light wasn’t meant to be tarnished by his actions. So he had given up any desire to find her again. To ease the pain in his chest at the thought the hybrid had turned to his quest for power. Without the bonds that tied him to others then he surely could master his magic and achieve ultimate power.

But how strong was he?

Yes he could easily wipe out a group of bandits and he could spar with many warriors…but what did that achieve? The emptiness inside of him had only continued to grow. With it he had went on more rampages, wandering off into the darkness of the night to discover trouble throughout Tendaji. In Tale he had contested with the best of a band of rogues while in Oba he had participated in a huge brawl that spanned across the desert sands. He had even played with the minds of others, manipulated them for a form of sick amusement. Was he truly amused or even satisfied by seeing them fall? Seeing Talisia with Eresin made him realize how empty he truly had become on the inside.

It was this confusion and rage that made him venture away from it all.

As Nerio welcomed his nephew and friend into the caravan, Kian found himself blending back in with the shadows. No one had told Talisia about his presence yet and she didn’t realize that the Kian others would reference was truly her “Ciaran” from before. So for now his secret was safe. Was he truly going to run? Why had he even been looking for Eresin in the first place? As a stepping stone to getting more power? Had he truly become so calloused that even a childhood friend was easily sacrificed in his quest?

For the first time in years shame decorated his features. Words that Nerio had gently teased towards him over the years echoed through his mind, “You can change, you know. Not everything that you shun is actually a weakness. I believe in you to make the right decisions, always. There’s more than just death in darkness, Kian…” Gritting his teeth, Kian reached out and punched the heavy trunk of a tree. How frustrating. This appearance of friend and sister had muddled his once clear mind. Now he felt like he was a child again lost in the snows of Zena searching for someone, anyone, but finding nothing. When Talisia had escaped he had nothing left to comfort him from the agony of his life. All he had wanted then was death, but finding life again had tossed him onto a path of his own destruction. He was all he had known after all. Their mother had made certain of that by always showing him her cruel ways. The scars on his back and the screams of others that echoed in his mind had attested to that.

So why would he begin yearning for more now?

“I won’t give up! My desire to protect her is what makes me stronger!”

From the shadows the hybid watched as a gang teamed up on a Matori. Oba was such a heated place and leaving Jauhar behind, Kian had stumbled upon an interesting scene. Two lovers, an Oban woman and a Matori male, were surrounded by a rowdy group. It seems they don’t appreciate the Matori taking the lady away from them. Ah, yes there was the scorned lover. Kian stayed back and watched with interest as the Matori seemed intent on continuing to push himself up after each blow.

Wouldn’t it have been easier to just give up and let them take the girl back?

Before he may have just turned away and let the scene continue to unfold since the Matori needed this cruel lesson in life. But as he glanced backwards the male watched as the girl too seemed to struggle against her captors. Was their bond really worth all this pain? An image of Eresin protecting Talisia came to mind and he frowned. Hadn’t the squirt stated that he wanted to show Tally another side of magic? Magic that could protect her? Protection…such a strange word. Kian once had believed that by hiding his magic he had been protecting his twin. But hadn’t that just been cowardice?

He had been afraid of his own magic after all.

For the longest time he had believed that accepting it was to let go of those he cared about. In his heart he believed allowing that destructive urges to take over would allow him to disappear completely from their lives…once he had given in then that was that. He was lost to them forever. But was he really? Talisia had even accepted the fact that Eresin too was a mage. What made him so different?

He would have never stood up against others to protect Tally so openly before. His mother would have just tormented her more had he intervened. But had that really helped in the long run? Just like now avoiding her for all those years hadn’t seemed to ease the pain in her heart. As Eresin argued his twin missed him and was looking for him. Even to the point of sacrificing the small comforts that she had found in their years apart…was that the concept of love? Pushing yourself further than before to protect those you had bonds with?

His twin, his friend…weren’t they important to him?

Just like the Matori who kept reaching out for his beloved, was it a crime to reach out for those who loved him? Did true power really come from being alone? Kian’s fists clenched at his sides. How could they even forgive him for all that he had done? At this point he worried that change was an impossibility. He had already gone so far on his own…was there really a turning point?

There was no way. He was too far gone.

So why did he turn around and help the overpowered couple? The mage sent the group of Oban males back towards their rich homes without much problem, but the love he saw between the Matori and his lover sent another stabbing pain through his chest. Was it really weakness when that man had stood up to so much for her? Once more the words from Eresin about nobility and the rightful use of magic with control rang through his mind.

What did the squirt really know?

Yet, Talisia….could she look at him like those others had?

Even though he left without a word to the couple their expressions of thanks had been reminiscent of others. The pair of siblings that he had saved in Sauti, even the wind girl he had rescued before playing around with her, and several others lingered there. If he was so far gone, so damaged then why did he bother helping them? None of them had seemed to mind the fact that he had fought in order to help them out of trouble. The memories seemed to push him forward. If he truly had given up then why was it now that he turned back towards Jauhar?

“Perhaps I do have a chance…”

The ache in his heart hoped so. Just the thought of seeing his twin again filled him with a mix of dread and hope. Knowing that Talisia was there had given him a strength that he thought lost long ago. That and the pushes from Eresin and Nerio finally seemed to strike a chord with him. Perhaps the squirt’s sass against him did ring somewhat true. Talisia wanted to see him and who was he to deny her?

This time he would face her and it would be her decision whether or not to accept him.

But he was determined of one thing…he would face his inner darkness now and do his best to learn this control that Eresin spoke of. He would change and become the brother that Talisia needed. Perhaps the ghost of Ciaran wasn’t completely lost to Kian after all. The echoes of those he had saved attested to that.

He just prayed that he could truly change and not prove them all wrong…
