Spring Showers
Prompt 1

Solo or RP Format
Can be used toward Solo or RP req

After the frigid chill of the harsh winter had left Tendaji, it seemed that most were happy to just return to their normal routines, though the normal routine didn’t seem to be what the weather had in mind. It wasn’t long before almost everywhere noticed the way that the winter air had seemed to push precipitation onto the land in its place. Rain flowed seemingly non-stop, reaching all the areas of Tendaji, even frozen Zena saw its share of rain, though the temperatures were still much too cold to support such a thing and rain turned to hail, which froze over the ground.

The critters of Tendaji only wanted to seek shelter from their flooded homes and the wet downpour that surrounded them. They found their way into homes, huts, sheds, anywhere that could stay dry - and preferrably warm.

Lerim (pl. Lerims) - The lerim are small, amphibian-like animals that live near the edges of the lakes of Sauti. Their tough skins allow them to blend in with the rocks on land when breeding and their webbing allows for smooth movement through the water where they spend most of their lives. They have hard wart-like protrusions jutting from their backs that heat up over the day and produce a steam.

Roll 2: How many are encountered.

It hadn't been long since Xilarn left Tale behind. The landscape turned to rocks and crags and dried grass, a huge shift from the thick trees of Tale and an even larger change from the rainforests of Juahar, and it certainly was a far cry from the sandy dunes of his Oban home. Yet, somehow, Xil felt satisfied with this. He'd wanted to abandon his past- his family, the war, his home, his life, everything- and start again. He wanted to forget those things and focus on... well, not on them, in any case. And since everywhere he'd been was littered with those things, he needed someplace new; lands uncharted. It seemed like everything up to this point held a tinge of negativity, so if he could just start on a positive front, things would turn out better this time. Surely. And he could be happy in this new terrain.

There... was a downside, of course. Xilarn knew next to nothing about making a home out here. The methods he'd implemented in Juahar were not likely to be as useful among the rocks, and he had little desire to stay in a tent for the rest of his life. He could always seek out the natives and inquire about their practices, but he doubted many of them would be open to his intrusions. So, while he had made it out to where he wanted to be, he had no clue where to start. With anything.

And with the pouring rain and crackling lightning, today seemed a poor time to seek out answers.

The Oban boy hunkered down in a small, low-ceiling cavern located somewhere in Sauti's lands. The rain was so thick and heavy, Xilarn could hardly see more than a foot in front of his face. He'd considered cracking open his map and trying to get to a more populated area, but wandering around with no sense of direction or source of landmarks seemed foolish at best, and likely suicidal at worst. So even if the cavern was small, cold, open to the winds, and contained nothing to start a fire with, it was still better than getting sick from wandering in the rain.

Sure was dark, though...

Xilarn wasn't particularly adept at magic, but he did know a spell or two. Starting a fire by hand seemed near impossible with how wet everything was, but with a little magic and a few stray scraps of cloth, and small twigs plucked from the cavern's crevices, the Oban lad was able to get a small flame going, enough to shed a little light on his current residence.

At first, things went about as one would expect. The rain was loud around him, the flames flickered and created mortifying shadows. Xilarn had to continuously dig out small twigs and roots to keep the fire going. All this was normal.

What distinctly wasn't normal was the creature that appeared. It sat on the edge of the flames, staring at the two-legged boy with enormous amphibious eyes. Xil was started by the glassy iris reflection for a moment, but after just an instant, he greeted it, "Hello." It moved so quickly that Xilarn jumped, the lerim quickly scurrying off to the rocks and disappearing.

Weird thing, it was... Coming so close to people. And a fire at that. The animals here must be stupid... But it was only a small concern and nothing worth moving for. With nothing else to do, save for turn in for the night, Xilarn unraveled his sleeping mat and hunkered down.

When he opened his eyes again, the fire was set at a thin glow. A white fog filled the cavern, warm and thick, despite the cooler air outside. Xilarn himself was sticky with sweat as he moved, the feeling drawing a disgusted grimace to his face. He sat up, and from the corner of his eye, there was skittering. A great deal of skittering. So much so, that the Fire boy fumbled about for his spear or a knife or anything. His fingers landed instead on a touch, yet smooth, and wriggling body. With a yelp, he recoiled, and suddenly spurred on a burst of magic to ignite the fire spell once more.

The flames were brief and flickering, but in that moment, he saw eyes, dozens of them. And tails and bodies, squirming to escape after his movement had disturbed them. A few lingered, their small, sleek, and wet-looking frames stilled in careless abandon. And those were the ones Xilarn watched. The bumps on the backs... Steam... Small tendrils from each of them, twisting and winding their way up to the top of the cavern and pooling, creating a room of warmth (and damp humidity) despite the outside chill.

Slowly, Xilarn settled again. Stupid harmless, creatures. But creatures that sought heat and light from his fire and proceeded to thank him by warming his current abode. They weren't distinctly hurting anything, so Xilarn decided to let them be for now. Perhaps when his raptrix Gadot rejoined him, the beast could even make a meal of the tiny creatures.
