Xil rubbed his temples, flipping his hood back in annoyance. Not that it mattered. He couldn't see any better with it down than he could with it up. Pretty much all it did was expose his forehead to the muggy air. It really was too hot for something as heavy and concealing as a cloak. He was even prepared to adamantly insist that it hindered his already shoddy hunting abilities. It was thick and flowing, and it captured every single drop of moisture in the air and sucked it right against his skin. Xilarn was sure of it. He felt disgusting, tired, hungry. No amount of inconspicuousness was worth the agony of a cloak. Yes, he'd been informed that he wasn't welcome here, and if he was alone, then he didn't have a snowball's chance in the desert of survival, so it was in his best interest to hide his blatantly blaring orange crystals, but...

It was just so hot, and he was choking and sweating, and the frustrations of the day were weighing down on him, and he just wanted to be free.

His fingers dove up to his collar, fumbling desperately and quite violently with the ties that held the cloth in place. He growled in annoyance as he prepared to rip the thing off, but the sound of unfamiliar voices had him instantly recoiling into the safety of the cloak. He pulled the hood up and drew it around himself in a protective cocoon. The voices neither came closer nor receded. He hadn't been spotted. But... Upon closer listening, the voices actually... did sound vaguely familiar. Not as if he could put a name to a face, but still... Oban. And at this point that was all he could ever hope for in this forest.

He peeked from behind a tree, his clay-colored eyes wide and hopeful as they sought out light from a fire. And people. Real, civilized people gathered about eating real food and saying things that actually made sense. If it was a massive hallucination, he didn't care. All he knew was that one moment he was hiding in the trees, and the next he was flinging his arms around the first person he reached.

Naevius had been allowed to go out with a hunting/search party in which she was very excited for. Granted, she wouldn't be allowed to go further than the camp they made for the night but it was better than being back at the main camp. There were nice people there, but Naevius wanted some adventure too! Some soldiers had just gotten back from their route and everyone was gathered around to hear their report. It was the same as all the others, trees, trees and more trees. Very few animals had been spotted too which made Naevius think they were either really smart or the barbaric Tendajians had killed them all to take away their food source. The possibility was there, though it made her mad to think about for two reasons: their soldiers wouldn't have any extra sources of food and that animals were killed needlessly.

The soldiers were discussing what they would do next, should they continue further into the forest and risk running into the Tendajian army or turn back now. Most were for continuing on, they wanted the glory of finding the enemy army and some, like Naevius, just didn't want to go back to the main camp. Only a few were for heading back, they hadn't gone that far from the main camp in the first place so those who wanted to could. Focusing back in on the conversation, Nae chimed in a few things about what was being made to eat that night when suddenly a pair of arms were around her neck. Gasping in surprise she threw all her weight in the direction the attacker had been going to continue his momentum, to try to throw them off her.

Sorry for the delay! Vacation and all! I should be able to keep up better now!

Xil gasped in shock as the woman he'd collided with suddenly lurched forward. In hindsight, it really didn't seem like a good idea to dive headfirst into a group of warriors who were on patrol for the Tendajian menace, especially not while shrouded like some form of barbarian assassin. With this in mind, he released her, staggering a few steps forward to keep from falling over with the unexpected momentum.

Around him, those few people within the immediate vicinity went on alert. Xilarn felt someone yank on his cloak. He was pretty sure he spotted someone drawing a bow from the corner of his eye. Another someone reached to grab and restrain his arm. "Wait, wait," he shouted in alarm as his fingers fumbled with the hood. The black cloth flicked down, revealing that he was obviously just a young, stupid, teenage Oban. "Sorry, I just- I'm lost. I got a little excited when I saw familiar-ish people." Calm, stay clam. He could rant and rave as much as he liked, but it wouldn't do him any good here. He raised his hands defensively to show that he had nothing like a real weapon on him.

Everything seemed to happen so quickly after Naevius flung the attacker from her back. The soldiers were drawing their weapons and lunging forward to grab the intruder, but before too long, the man had been caught and his hood flicked down only to reveal that he was an Oban. The soldiers visibly relaxed after that, even more so once the man? Boy? showed his hands to show that he had no real weapon with him. Smoothing her shirt and hair down, Nae took a deep breath. "Sorry about that, you startled me by throwing your arms around me." She made a few nods to some of the soldiers letting them know she was indeed okay.

((No worries. My school was taking all my time anyway. <3))

Xilarn flushed a a dark shade of maroon as he realized he'd actually somehow, miraculously managed to throw his arms around a girl. Not intentionally, of course, but it had still been a thing that happened. Whatever gods had witnessed this moment were surely laughing at him. "Er, I- Well, it was completely my fault, so you have no need to apologize!" He grumbled out in embarrassment. Not only that, but it had actually been witnessed by others. Sometimes he wished he didn't have his father's brash nature...

Anyway, the quicker he switched his thoughts to something else, the better. "So this..." He glanced around at the small group of soldiers, noting immediately that his siblings weren't among them. "This can't be the main camp..." Or hardly a camp at all. Just a single patrol, most likely. "So how far is...?" He trailed off after thinking better of what he was about to ask. Oban or not, he was still one lone kid in enemy territory. He could easily be a traitor or a thief, or any number of other unsavory people. Of course, he was still just one kid, so hardly a threat...

Smoothing down her clothes, Naevius took a step back from her would be attacker. Once everyone was calming down and going back to their little chores and what not, Naevius motioned towards a few of the makeshift chairs, which were really just stumps. The other seemed quite nervous and fidgity, so Nae thought it might be best to sit him down before he started to collapse.

"Please, sit down." She said to him as she herself sat. "This is indeed not the main camp, just a scouting party. Now, forgive me if I sound rude, but who are you? If you don't know that this is a scouting party, where did you come from and how did you get here?" She questioned him, a tad bit more serious than she had intended to. He looked familiar, though, but Nae couldn't quite place his face.

It was easier to relax once the majority of the soldiers resumed their chores, leaving just Xil and the Oban female to perch on a few tree stumps that were stationed around a pile of glowing embers. A few of the wearier men took up posts nearby, but didn't try to intrude on the conversation. Xil's gaze flicked around, catching any gaze that would meet his. No one familiar... With a sigh, he sat hesitantly, flicking the long, swaying end of his cloak behind him. "I see," he muttered softly. A scouting party. So there were others. And they were reasonably close.

"I..." Was there any way to tell her he'd fled from home to research native behavior on his own that wouldn't sound ridiculous and crazy?

Probably not.

"I was separated from my own scouting party," Xilarn lied tightly. "You don't look familiar, so we must be from different camps... I guess I was more lost than I realized." He scratched the back of his neck uncertainly. "My name is Xilarn Att-" He choked back the rest of his family name, morphing into an awkward fit of coughs. Would she recognize it if he said it? Probably not, but Xil wasn't willing to risk it. If she did know it, it certainly wouldn't be from any of his accomplishments.

Now that things were beginning to calm down, Naevius' heart slowed as well. It was a comfort that not all of the soldiers had returned to chores and whatever since she didn't exactly know this oban. Sure there were plenty of Obans she didn't know, but to have found one in the forests of their enemy alone? That was more than a little weird.

As they sat in the firelight, the other's features started looking somewhat familiar. It was common that Obans shared some similarity but when he said his name and the first part of his last, Nae's eyebrows rose a fraction. All of the little bits added up to his identity. "Attlee? Cether's younger brother?" She asked him. The similarities between the soldier that was known to her and this mistaken "attacker". She hadn't seen Cether since the first big attack which was unfortunate since she enjoyed his conversation.

Yup, let's do it!

She recognized him so quickly, so easily, so... carelessly. Xilarn's lips quirked down into a frown. That would've been fine, but anyone who could say Cether's name without an air of disdain to their voice was probably not likely to be on his side, whatever the circumstances may be. "That's right," he muttered softly, twitching his shoulders to draw his cloak more firmly around himself. Where would she know his elder brother from? Simple passing? Word of mouth? Camp? Was he... was he actually there?

His fists tightened before he forced himself to relax. No... Well, maybe, but even if he was, as long as Xil stayed out here, with the patrol and didn't follow them back, it wouldn't really matter. Other questions could come later, but for now, probably best to stick to the usual pleasantries. "So, you know of me, but you haven't told me your name yet," he pointed out, doing his best to keep the wariness from his voice.

He seemed a little disappointed that she had recognized him. She had tried to make a point to know everyone's names so that no one would ever feel unimportant because generally, it were the ones that didn't think they were that were the most important. Never the less, Naevius smiled as she noticed him tense. She had to resist the urge to frown as it worried her a little bit. Laughing a little bit as he pointed out that she hadn't introduced herself yet. It was kind of refreshing, in a way, that he didn't recognize her. Maybe it was the darkness or the firelight playing on her features. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she dipped her head down rather modestly. "Most call me Lady Naevius." She said simply. Of course her friends left off the 'lady' part especially since she didn't really like it, but she knew it was part of being who she was and since she didn't know this Attlee very well, she wasn't eager to consider him a friend just yet. Not that she considered Cether a friend, but an acquaintance that she wouldn't entirely mind not hearing Lady from.

"Lady...?" Xilarn repeated in a quiet murmur, tilting his head ever so slightly. If that was true, then she was actually a fairly high-classed noble. Though in his opinion that hardly mattered while they were out here. He didn't recognize her name, but then he hardly studied much of the nobility. As the youngest son, he didn't have much place among them, anyway, so why should he waste his time trying to memorize their names. Still, he wasn't one to be outwardly rude. AT least not immediately. He dipped his head politely. "Of course, it's a pleasure to meet you, Lady Neavius."

He had half a mind to ask what a noble was doing with a scouting party, or even why she was in Juahar at all. It was quite a long way from home. But as he opened his mouth, a nearby guard bumbled between them. The man half-tripped over a small log poking out of the fire pit. Xilarn grimaced at him as he stumbled to the ground before looking up apologetically at the two Obans. "S-sorry, looks like my feet got ahead of me." probably drank too much and was obviously unaccustomed (and rather young) to the life of a soldier. The man rose and blinked back at him. "Oh, sir, I hadn't realized you came on this- No, wait, you're... a little smaller than Captain Cether."

Xilarn's face dipped into a scowl instantaneously. "I know he has a sister, but..." This fellow would probably not win any popularity contests when he spoke so thoughtlessly. Sister. As if Xil looked like a woman just because of-! "And a little brother too. Ah, so you must be... Well, I can't remember his name, but if you are related, I bet your brother would want to see you!"

Xil's scowl darkened, his eyes glinting angrily from the light cast by the flames. What an annoyance! Didn't even have the decency to remember his name! "I have no relation to the brainless, two-faced, bloodthirsty prat!" Xil spat, hissing the words between his teeth like poison. The venom certainly didn't do him much good. The Attlee men all had fairly notorious tempers...

The slight surprise on Xilarn's face caused her to smile a little as she resisted laughter. He apparently hadn't spent as much time around nobility as his siblings had, which, maybe was a good thing. "Well it's a pleasure to meet you as well, Xilarn." It was kind of unfortunate that the discomfort was so palpable after the mention of his brother's name, and that discomfort and hatred was only increased ten-fold as a soldier came stumbling almost into the fire. Naevius gasped slightly as she stood to try and right the obviously drunken soldier.

She tilted her head as Xilarn was mistaken for his brother at first, and then listened as the drunken soldier continued his prattle before ending on figuring that Cether would want to see his younger brother. Xilarn's reaction was quite surprising to Naevius. It was clear that seeing his brother was the last thing Xilarn wanted. Especially if he was wandering around the forest by himself. Perhaps she should interfere on his behalf..

Naevius gracefully put herself between the two men. "Now Lucen, I'm sure my guest has other things to do right now, if it is in fact Captain Cether's relative. While resemblances are apparent, you resemble Masha over there, but I wouldn't say you two are siblings, that would lead to some complications between you and her, now wouldn't it?" She said in her sweetest voice. It was lucky that the relationship between Lucen and Masha was obvious, otherwise she wouldn't have as much cover. "Why don't you go ask Masha if she needs help with anything and forget this ever happened and mention nothing to Captain Cether or a little rumor might reach the ears of some about you and a special someone. And we wouldn't want that happening now would we?" With the vigorous shaking of Lucen's head, Naevius smiled just as sweetly before giving him a pat on the back and steering him towards the Oban woman Masha. "Off you go then."

As soon as he was gone, she sighed in relief. Turning back to Xilarn, she smiled kindly, instead of the fake smile she had put on for Lucen. "Ah sorry about that. You didn't sound like you wanted to see your brother and I figure you must have a reason why so I'll hear you out and make sure none of the men, or women, send news to your brother."

Xilarn paused as Naevius came between him and the other soldier, though there was no less abrasive rigidity in his posture for her efforts. He scowled around her at the intrusive soldier, but... all in all... Nae seemed to have a pretty firm grip on what was happening. To be frank, Xilarn wasn't completely sure if he appreciated it or not. Nobles and their high-handed antics... He could've handled it just fine on his own, though maybe not quite as sweetly. If he could call vaguely veiled threats "sweet" at all.

Regardless of her intentions, the soldier departed, quickly scurrying toward the woman Nae had pointed out to him. When she turned back to him, he was surprised to see a warm smile upon her face. His brows furrowed. She should have no reason to help him. As far as he could see, she wouldn't gain anything from it. He opened his mouth, then closed it again. What could he actually say to her? A "thank you" was probably in order, but despite her smile, he still found the events a little suspicious.

Instead, he settled on, "It's hardly worth an apology, but..." He didn't miss the expected, 'I'll hear you out,' even if he was half-tempted to ignore it. "Well, to be honest, I don't get along with my brother that great. We parted on pretty unfavorable terms on our last encounter, and that was at our actual home. I'd hate to come across him while he was in his element, and I don't really want to get roped into his battle just because he holds a higher rank."

He started to add, 'you understand,' but then he realized she probably didn't.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 12, 2014 11:02 pm

Naevius quickly tried to reign herself in check, as the one 'noble' thing she did caused her to bring up the person she had to be sometimes when meeting with important people and how it sounded as if she forced him to speak. The edges of her mouth twitched down as if it was determined to show her internal dislike of the way things had just happened. In any case, it had been taken care of discreetly, no one else had over heard anything and that was for the best.

Brushing the hair from her face, Nae listened intently. She could honestly say that she believed him, whole heartedly. There was just something that seemed completely honest about him. "I see...well, in my few encounters with your brother..." Naevius paused, wondering what exactly she should say. She found him somewhat charming, but she heard what people said. After all, that was part of being a noble, listening to all the gossip. Listen, and you would find the nugget of truth inside every rumor. "Well, honestly, I can see that. While he may seem charming I...don't think he's all he appears to be?" Her words tapered off and she cocked her head slightly.

Naevius contemplated on his last sentence for a moment. "Do you not believe that this war is worth fighting? In your honest opinion?" Wit some nobles, this question could be a trap. With some, the question from her would seem like a bigger trap. But from her, it was probably safer than if any other noble or general had asked. She was almost counting on the fact that he didn't really know who she was. He wasn't with the army, he was out lost in the forest, she had to wonder what exactly he was doing out here.

((Sorry for taking so long. >.< If you're not interested in continuing, I understand.))

Xil's fingers wandered up to tug at the very end of one of his dreads as his gaze flit to the ground. Any conversation that involved Cether for any length of time was doomed to make him uncomfortably wary, especially around those that had shared a camp with him at one point. So even if Naevius sounded like she was unimpressed with the older Oban's antics, Xil didn't trust her. Not even a bit. Even if she had helped him out with the soldier back there... If only because he couldn't discern an actual reason that she'd have for wanting to help him.

His fingers rolled over tangled knots of his hair as he looked back to the woman. "He's... difficult to get along with. And is, of course, a mindless, bloodthirsty, battle-hungry dipstick-" No harm in letting her see the bitter now, considering he'd already unleashed it once. "But he is my brother, and I wouldn't wish any harm on him. I just don't want to see him." he hoped the lie about his concern for Cether's safety was at least passable, because quite frankly, if Cether died, the world would be a much better place. Not that Xilarn would ever admit that out loud.

He was taken aback at Naevius' next words. Did he not believe the war was worth fighting? Well... maybe not fighting. There were better ways to take over nations than by sacrificing his own people. especially considering the terrain wasn't that great a choice for them, anyway. Here, Tendajians would have the advantage. It was absurd to believe that even a trained army of one nation could take down an abundance of savages from the rest of the world. So yes, he had his doubts.

But he didn't want to be the person that questioned the King. Not when everyone around him were soldiers. "I thinkour victory will be hard won, but worth it in the end," he murmured softly, gaze flicking away again. "You must have your own motives for being out and about here. is this where you believe you'll do the most good?"
