The Gauntlet: Run the Course! [Round 2]

The Ascent

Start off by racing up a ramp. A thirty degree angle is nothing for an athlete-- not after the Warped Wall from the Qualifying Round, right? Don't get too confident, though, because it doesn't stop there. After the race up the incline it's up to you to finish the climb by leaping back and forth between platforms suspended by chains. Each one shifts beneath your weight, none of them seeing very sturdy.

If your modifier is agility: If you roll a 1 it is automatically a 3.
If your modifier is strength: If you roll a 3 it is automatically a 5.

  • 1 - Jumping is a lot harder than it looks, especially after you tripped your way up the ramp. Are you sure you've got it in you?
  • 2 - Face plant into the first platform and hit the mat below. Going to give it another go?
  • 3 - Your foot slips on the launch towards the first platform. Scramble for purchase and pull yourself up.
  • 4 - You're alright. I guess.
  • 5 - Climbing must be one of your things... You're off to a good start!
  • 6 - Flawless.

    The Descent

Dozens of bungee cords are crossed this way and that, creating a web of give and take to drop down through. Some of the cords are sticky, leaving an odd residue behind on anything they come in contact with. Others? Others aren't bungee cords at all, but interspersed cables and thin wires. Do be careful grabbing on to those...

If your modifier is agility: If there's a wire you narrowly miss catching yourself on it. No cuts for you-- Unless you grab it on purpose, but why would you do that?
If your modifier is strength: If you start to slide a bit faster through the cords you're more likely to catch yourself.

    • 1 - Please quote Skye Starrfyre in your run for a reaction prompt.
    • 2 - Oh what a tangled web we weave.... This is one heck of a mess. How are you ever going to get yourself out?
    • 3 - Slow and steady, sweetheart. Slow and steady.
    • 4 - Alright, so you don't make this look good, but it's not half bad.
    • 5 - Would have been record timing... If you'd rolled a six.
    • 6 - Flawless.

      The Gears

Managed to free yourself? Good. Dump out of the cords and onto a gear shaped platform, but don't linger long. It's in your best interest to keep moving forward because the three gears ahead start spinning faster the more time progresses and the last thing you want is to get thrown off into what waits below.

If your modifier is agility: If you roll a 5 or 6 add +1 to your roll for The Pipe.
If your modifier is strength: If you roll a 5 or 6 add +1 to your roll for The Pipe.

      • 1 - Please quote Skye Starrfyre in your run for a reaction prompt.
      • 2 - Round and round and round you go.... Don't get dizzy or you might slip!
      • 3 - Keep facing forward. Jump... Crap. You almost missed! Can you climb back up?
      • 4 - Made the first jump just fine, tripped up on the second. Hope you didn't turn your ankle...
      • 5 - Third time's a charm! Now can you make it to the pipe?
      • 6 - Flawless.

        The Pipe

As the last gear spins it's up to you to make a leap onto the pipe-- or into the pipe. The pipe is angled at fifteen degrees, suspended in the air above the same murky water you've risked falling into since the start of the gears. If you time your leap right you can run along the top, but most wind up scrambling inside the pipe as it sinks slowly down.

If your modifier is agility: Get out of jail free. If you roll a 1 you can wiggle out of this and act as though you've rolled a 2. Or you can quote Skye Starrfyre. Your choice.
If your modifier is strength: Get out of jail free. If you roll a 1 you can wiggle out of this and act as though you've rolled a 2. Or you can quote Skye Starrfyre. Your choice.

        • 1 - Please quote Skye Starrfyre in your run for a reaction prompt.
        • 2 - Just as your feet start to slip from beneath you, you find traction and scramble harder, faster, stronger...
        • 3 - Pipe's sinking pretty fast. Is that water right behind you? Is that.....?
        • 4 - You caught sight of something in the water right before you jumped into the pipe. Whatever it is, you don't want to risk winding up in the water with it.
        • 5 - It's not easy, but you're one step away from making it look that way. (If you rolled a 5 or 6 you have the option to have traveled on TOP of the pipe instead of inside of it!)
        • 6 - Flawless. (If you rolled a 5 or 6 you have the option to have traveled on TOP of the pipe instead of inside of it!)

          The Treads

Assuming you've managed to get the right air off of the pipe, your next task is to leap between two treadmills suspended in air. Roughly five foot in length apiece with a twelve inch gap between them, it's up to you to keep your balance. You really don't want to fall...

If your modifier is agility: If you roll a 5 or 6 add +1 to your next roll.
If your modifier is strength: If you roll a 1 or a 2 add +1 to your roll.

          • 1 - Please quote Skye Starrfyre in your run for a reaction prompt.
          • 2 - The tread is moving beneath you and you're barely holding on. Halp?
          • 3 - The tread is moving but you can scramble faster, right? Right???
          • 4 - Struggle bus on the first tread. Second should be easier if you keep your balance.
          • 5 - Weebles wobble but they don't fall down. You got this.
          • 6 - Flawless.

            The Chains

Give it all that you've got as you take a flying leap off of the treads. Launch yourself forward towards a series of chains hanging from above. Use whatever momentum or talent you can to swing from chain to chain until you reach the last of four and then drop, kiss the ground and thank whatever you believe in that you've made it to the end.

If your modifier is agility: If you roll a 4 add +1 to your roll and get fancy with that landing.
If your modifier is strength: If you roll a 2 or 3 add +1 to your roll.

            • 1 - Please quote Skye Starrfyre in your run for a reaction prompt.
            • 2 - Hands are tired, palms sweaty... Did you just slip?
            • 3 - HANG IN THERE. GET IT?
            • 4 - Halfway there, arms are feeling it. Don't give up. So close.
            • 5 - Just when you thought it couldn't get better... You realize it could, but you made it, so whatevs.
            • 6 - Flawless.

              Solo Run

              • Please title your thread: [Zenith - S] The Gauntlet [Character's Name]

              • Roll 6d6. Each dice roll will correspond with a segment of the obstacle course. Please follow the prompts accordingly to write a solo about your character's progression through the course. You may roll all six dice at once OR you can roll and respond to each prompt in six different posts-- whichever is easier for you to write in the long run.

              • Your reactions must total 500 words in order to qualify and proceed to the next round as well as in order to be entered in the prize drawing for all contestants.

              Tandem Run

              • Please title your thread: [Zenith - ORP] The Gauntlet [Characters' Names]

              • Please note that if you select this option you are enrolling in a joint effort. You will be expected to work together to complete this course and your score may suffer as a result, or you may get extra points for teamwork.

              • Over the course of your role play, contestants should roll a total of 6d6. Each dice roll will correspond with a segment of the obstacle course. Please follow the prompts accordingly as you role play out your characters' progression through the course. One player can roll for both, you can alternate rolling OR, if you're feeling ambitious, you can BOTH ROLL and play out the average.

              • Your reactions must total 500 words in order to qualify and proceed to the next round as well as in order to be entered in the prize drawing for all contestants.

              No Matter What

This round is more about you, the writers, enjoying yourselves and a little bit less about the dice rolls. The dice rolls are only in place as a tool to aide you along this section of the course. BE CREATIVE.

If you DO NOT want to add bonuses to your rolls because you LIKE SUFFERING you don't have to. Just quote me.

Also, please DO NOT delete your posts. Thank you!

Qualifying Round: Run the Course! [Round 1]

Visual Aid*

Floating Steps

A little leap-frog, a little pinball bumpers! It's up to you to make it from platform to platform as quickly as you can to cross between Point A and Point B. There's a set of six bumpers angled at 45 degrees. It's going to take a lot of agility to complete this run, although strength might come into play if you find yourself falling.

If you roll 1-3 and have chosen strength as your modifier: The number that you roll is the platform that you nearly fall off of. Your strength helps you catch yourself before you fall completely into the water.
If you have chosen agility as your modifier: Add +1 to your roll and follow that prompt instead.

  • 1 - Your shoe(s) are wet, but you didn't fall in! Hope you enjoy the sound of squish, squish, squish on the road to Victory!
  • 2 - We saw you slip there! Take an extra second to catch your breath, you might need it.
  • 3 - Bumpy start, but after the third bumper you've finally gotten the hang of it! It might just be smooth sailing through the last three. Maybe.
  • 4 - You'd make this look easy... If you were a frog. Or something that leapt better. But you're not, so it doesn't look easy, but at least it's not painful to watch?
  • 5 - Alright! That's the way you do it!
  • 6 - Flawless.

Big Dipper

Jump up and grab on, you're in for a ride! Use your strength to keep your grip as you slide down the track. Holding on is only the first part of this trip, though. The important part is that you stick your landing as you launch off the end towards your next step...

If you roll 1-2 and have chosen strength as your modifier: Your strength is on your side and you hold on tight for the ride! Congrats! For this segment your roll is now 3.
If you roll 5 or 6 and have chosen strength as your modifier: Add +1 to roll #3 for the Pipe Fitter. Who knew you'd be able to launch yourself that far after hanging on so tight?
If you roll 5 or 6 and have chosen agility as your modifier: Add +1 to roll #3 for the Pipe Fitter. Nice air time, bro.

  • 1 - You've managed to grab on with one hand before the bar starts to slide. Uh oh. Hold on tight! Keep your grip! DON'T FALL.
  • 2 - Two hands. TWO HANDS. You get a second hand onto the bar but can you keep your grip?
  • 3 - You've got the grip, but do you have the air? It doesn't look like it, bro. Are your hands starting to slip? -1 to roll #3 for the Pipe Fitter [1 is the lowest you can roll].
  • 4 - Alright! Arms might be a little sore, but at least you're holding on!
  • 5 - This is how we do it. Were you a roller-coaster in a past life?
  • 6 - Flawless.

Pipe Fitter

Launch from the end of the dipper and grab on! The higher up you latch on to the foam pipe the less of a climb you'll have before it's time to swing. Again, you're going to need your strength to support you as you sway across two trapeze-style pipe bars. Time your leaps just right and you'll be able to shimmy down the trunk at the end where you'll have a moment to catch your breath and prepare your balance.

If you roll 1-3 and have chosen agility as your modifier: Launching through the air is the easy part, it's holding on that's kind of awful.

If you roll 1-3 and have chosen strength as your modifier: You've got no problem holding on, but are you really going to make that jump between swings?

  • 1 - You almost missed the first trapeze! You're going to land in the water if you don't get your act together!
  • 2 - You can't just climb up onto the first trapeze and sit there all day... Other people want to run the course too.
  • 3 - Dipper a little rough on you? Making it a little harder to hold on? You can do it! Keep telling yourself that.
  • 4 - Don't look down. Oh no... You looked down.
  • 5 - Look at you shimmy and shake! Now get on to the next round!
  • 6 - Flawless,

Block Run

This is all about agility! Five two by two cubes are lined up six inches apart on a rod. Keep your footfalls light or the cubes will spin, just waiting to throw you off. Take a running start and go! You're going to need that momentum for what comes next.

If you roll 1-2 and have chosen agility as your modifier: You're in luck! The lowest you can roll with agility for this task is 3.

If you roll 1 and have chosen strength as your modifier: Your feet fumble on the first block and you teeter backwards, just narrowly catching yourself on the platform to pull yourself up and try again. Re-roll 1d6 for this task only. Or hit the water and call it quits. Up to you!

  • 1 - What? You weren't expecting the blocks to turn? Or did you just want to go for a swim? Is your foot wet?
  • 2 - That looked painful. I hope you didn't turn your ankle... You're not going to fall in, are you?
  • 3 - Grats! Halfway has never looked so awkward. You fumbled to start but it's smooth sailing from here on out.
  • 4 - Arms out on either side of you is the best way to balance, yeah?
  • 5 - You took an extra second to plot your course and find your zen, but good show dude.
  • 6 - Flawless.

Spin Cycle

Don't let this be what hangs you out to dry! Once more you're going to be relying on your strength to get a good momentum as you swing from one upside-down metal laundry basket to the next. Just be careful, they're likely to turn like a steering wheel as your weight pulls them around.

If you roll 1-2 and have chosen strength as your modifier: You're in luck! The lowest you can roll with strength for this task is 3.

If you roll 1 and have chosen agility as your modifier: You managed to keep your feet out of the water. Your shoes aren't wet. Unless they were wet already, in which case.... Hope it didn't get to your socks?

  • 1 - Your arms are tired. You're tired. You could give up, you know. I bet the water would feel nice and cool right about now...
  • 2 - Determination! No one leaves baby in the spin cycle! Just don't slip up!
  • 3 - One. Thing. At. A. Time. Slow and steady, bro.
  • 4 - The struggle is real, but you've got this... And you're making good time, right? Right???
  • 5 - You spent your recess on the jungle gym, didn't you?
  • 6 - Flawless.

Warped Wall

Take a deep breath, center yourself and give it your best run. Agility should help with keeping your feet light while strength may be needed to help you pull yourself up and over the ledge. Once you've made it, hit the button and you're done!

For this round....

  • 1 - Seems like this would be a good place to lay down forever, doesn't it? Nope. Give it your best! Give it your all! You're not going to be defeated by a wall. Roll 1d6 to try again. Or quit. It's up to you!
  • 2 - Just kidding. Was that really all you had in you? Not even halfway up the ramp? C'mon! YOU CAN DO THIS. Roll 1d6 to try again. Or quit. It's up to you!
  • 3 - So... Close... Almost... There.... If you chose strength as your modifier your 3 is now a 4. If you chose agility as your modifier roll 1d6 + 2 to try again!
  • 4 - Y'know, I almost didn't think you were going to make it but you here you are!
  • 5 - I see you, Spider-man, running straight up, climbing that wall.
  • 6 - Flawless.

OOC Information

You will have until 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, June 28th, 2018 to complete your run of the course. That should be a little over 72 hours by the time the event goes live tonight (June 25, 2018 ). In order to complete the course you have two options:

Solo Run

  • Please title your thread: [Zenith - S] Qualifying Run for [Character's Name]

  • Roll 6d6. Each dice roll will correspond with a segment of the obstacle course. Please follow the prompts accordingly to write a solo about your character's progression through the course. You may roll all six dice at once OR you can roll and respond to each prompt in six different posts-- whichever is easier for you to write in the long run.

  • If you are playing an existing character: Your reactions must total 500 words in order to count as a solo and in order to be entered in the prize drawing for all contestants.

  • If you are playing a disposable character: Your reactions must total 500 words in order to qualify and proceed to the next round as well as in order to be entered in the prize drawing for all contestants.

Spectator Run

  • Please title your thread: [Zenith - ORP] Qualifying Run for [Character's Name]

  • Please note that if you select this option you are opening your role play up to other characters, disposable or otherwise, who may wish to check out the competition. There may be heckling. There may be encouragement. Please be respectful of each other!

  • If you are an existing civilian you may invite family or friends to watch your qualifying run. No one will be harmed in this stage of the game.

  • Over the course of your role play, contestants should roll a total of 6d6. Each dice roll will correspond with a segment of the obstacle course. Please follow the prompts accordingly as you role play out your character's progression through the course.

  • If you are playing an existing character: Your reactions must total 500 words in order for this to count as a completed roleplay and in order to be entered in the prize drawing for all contestants. It is up to you, the player, to decide WHERE in the course your character flubs to knock themselves out of the Qualifying Round.

  • If you are playing a disposable character: Your reactions must total 500 words in order to qualify and proceed to the next round as well as in order to be entered in the prize drawing for all contestants.

Questions & Answers

Do I have to roll all of my dice in one go?

Nope! You can roll 1d6 at a time or all 6d6 at once, or any number in between as long as by the end of your Qualifying Run you have rolled at least 6d6.

Can participants spectate during the runs of other participants?

Yes! No two runs would have been at exactly the same time due to their being only one course, so by all means, watch away!

Does a buzzer tell them when to 'start' their run? How does the timer work?

'Timer' starts the moment your feet leave the starting point and you launch to the first bumper, so no buzzer at the beginning since its a qualifying run, but there is one at the end you need to hit in order to complete the course!

We don't have to keep rolling until we get a six to move on, do we?

The rolls are there to correspond with the list under the spoiler tag for each section. They are meant to provide a base for you to build off of as to how your character progressed through the course. The only time that you have to roll more than the 6d6 is if the number that you rolled for a specific section indicates that you should do so.

what does "Roll 1d6 +2" mean? I know to roll again, but what does the +2 mean?

Sailor Hawk
what does "Roll 1d6 +2" mean? I know to roll again, but what does the +2 mean?

It means to add two to your roll! So if you roll 1d6 and get a 3 you would add 2 to it and your total would be 5.

A little problem with that has arisen. My second roll was 5. With the +2 that would make 7 - there is no 7.... I'm thinking just do 6?

If you're still referencing the information from the Qualifying Round it has moved to the 'past round archives' section. Any existing characters still wishing to participate in the Qualifying Round are more than welcome to do so up until the end of the event!

The Gauntlet will open TONIGHT, come hell or high water, so get ready to those playing disposable characters!
