"Ms. Jacobs, this way please."

Dessie started slightly at the polite voice at her side, flinching away from the polite hand to direct her towards the start of the course. She hadn't realized the young lady who was wrangling the contestants was talking to her, being called Jacobs was still new to her. It shouldn't have been since she had been part of their family for over four years now but the name change had only occurred this past winter. She had finally done the paperwork and now she had the name to go with it. Xander had been ecstatic. A small smile tugged at her lips before the cool blonde focused on the task at hand.

She needed to pay attention to what the staffer was saying, it wouldn't do to get hurt on this challenge run she had signed up for, no matter how much here mind wanted to wander. It wanted to drift to the crowd, would her family be there?, it wanted to drift towards the other contestants, could she beat them?, and it wanted to drift to the name she had written on the application form.

Desdemona Christianson Jacobs

A mouthful. A long name that carried so much pain. Why keep her original last name, just shuffling it to the middle name slot? Why had she kept the name associated with a drunk man who ignored her if she was lucky and beat her if she wasn't. A man who had done so much worse to his wife, her mother, before she had died. A man who had tormented her and tortured her for much of her life. Why had she kept it? For remembrance? For history? For her own continual self flagellation? Dessie would tell any who asked, if she actually felt like explaining, that it was to remember where she came from and to never allow it to happen again but in the dark of the night when the nightmares came out to play even she didn't believe that explanation.

"Ms. Jacobs? Ms. Jacobs! Dessie! It's your turn!" The little handler hissed at the blonde until the icy blue eyes lost the distant look in them and glanced at her. The staffer then gestured frantically to the start of the course, if there hadn't been the note on the clipboard she might have shoved the prickly teen but someone had already found out that it wasn't wise to touch the blonde. "Go!"

"What? Oh. Right," With a nod of understanding Dessie approached the first challenge. The floating steps. Looked simple enough but other challengers had already proven that like the rest of this course this first challenge wouldn't be so easy. She didn't take much time to eye the six bumpers she was going to have to frog leap through before she was off and running.

She just hoped she didn't fail miserably on this first challenge.

Floating Steps

A little leap-frog, a little pinball bumpers! It's up to you to make it from platform to platform as quickly as you can to cross between Point A and Point B. There's a set of six bumpers angled at 45 degrees. It's going to take a lot of agility to complete this run, although strength might come into play if you find yourself falling.

If you roll 1-3 and have chosen strength as your modifier: The number that you roll is the platform that you nearly fall off of. Your strength helps you catch yourself before you fall completely into the water.
If you have chosen agility as your modifier: Add +1 to your roll and follow that prompt instead.

1 - Your shoe(s) are wet, but you didn't fall in! Hope you enjoy the sound of squish, squish, squish on the road to Victory!
2 - We saw you slip there! Take an extra second to catch your breath, you might need it.
3 - Bumpy start, but after the third bumper you've finally gotten the hang of it! It might just be smooth sailing through the last three. Maybe.
4 - You'd make this look easy... If you were a frog. Or something that leapt better. But you're not, so it doesn't look easy, but at least it's not painful to watch?
5 - Alright! That's the way you do it!
6 - Flawless.

With her first step onto the course her time started. She needed to go fast but also precisely because one wrong step, one wrong move would have her falling into the water below. Dessie would find herself wet, chilled, and likely humiliated... or at least pissed the ******** off. She wanted to get through the whole corse. Getting wet was not part of her plan so no matter how much she wanted to rush it she kept her pace steady as she started to cross the floating steps.

This apparently was a sound plan because she made it through them without any issues, just a wobble or two between a step. Still though, the press of time had her going immediately on to the second part of this course. She now needed to face down the Big Dipper and hope her upper body strength would be able to hold out long enough.

((Second Roll: 2))
Quote:
Big Dipper

Jump up and grab on, you're in for a ride! Use your strength to keep your grip as you slide down the track. Holding on is only the first part of this trip, though. The important part is that you stick your landing as you launch off the end towards your next step...

If you roll 1-2 and have chosen strength as your modifier: Your strength is on your side and you hold on tight for the ride! Congrats! For this segment your roll is now 3.
If you roll 5 or 6 and have chosen strength as your modifier: Add +1 to roll #3 for the Pipe Fitter. Who knew you'd be able to launch yourself that far after hanging on so tight?
If you roll 5 or 6 and have chosen agility as your modifier: Add +1 to roll #3 for the Pipe Fitter. Nice air time, bro.

1 - You've managed to grab on with one hand before the bar starts to slide. Uh oh. Hold on tight! Keep your grip! DON'T FALL.
2 - Two hands. TWO HANDS. You get a second hand onto the bar but can you keep your grip?
3 - You've got the grip, but do you have the air? It doesn't look like it, bro. Are your hands starting to slip? -1 to roll #3 for the Pipe Fitter [1 is the lowest you can roll].
4 - Alright! Arms might be a little sore, but at least you're holding on!
5 - This is how we do it. Were you a roller-coaster in a past life?
6 - Flawless

After that first part Dessie figured she wouldn't do half bad at the second one. It was basically just holding on to a metal bar as it slid down a track then sticking the landing after letting go, it wasn't rocket science. But still, the young blonde approached the starting point for this particular part and eyed the whole thing. Her blue eyes narrowed, not deviating from the challenge even as her timmer ticked down. Once she thought she was ready the blonde didn't hesitate, she jumped and grabbed hold...

Tried to grab hold!

Even as the bar started to speed down the track Dessie scrambled to get a decent hold with her second hand. Her first was struggling to hold. ********, ********, ********! With fingertips barely holding she reached the end of the track and was basically launched into the air. She didn't have to worry about holding on anymore but she sure as s**t had to worry about the landing, which she made such a lack of finesse that her run through the floating steps was likely a fluke. But land it she did. Shaken and with sore hands the grouchy blonde held on for dear life as she started the next challenge.

((Third Roll: 3))
Quote:
Pipe Fitter

Launch from the end of the dipper and grab on! The higher up you latch on to the foam pipe the less of a climb you'll have before it's time to swing. Again, you're going to need your strength to support you as you sway across two trapeze-style pipe bars. Time your leaps just right and you'll be able to shimmy down the trunk at the end where you'll have a moment to catch your breath and prepare your balance.

If you roll 1-3 and have chosen agility as your modifier: Launching through the air is the easy part, it's holding on that's kind of awful.

If you roll 1-3 and have chosen strength as your modifier: You've got no problem holding on, but are you really going to make that jump between swings?

1 - You almost missed the first trapeze! You're going to land in the water if you don't get your act together!
2 - You can't just climb up onto the first trapeze and sit there all day... Other people want to run the course too.
3 - Dipper a little rough on you? Making it a little harder to hold on? You can do it! Keep telling yourself that.
4 - Don't look down. Oh no... You looked down.
5 - Look at you shimmy and shake! Now get on to the next round!
6 - Flawless,

Her hands were burning but Dessie was determined to go as far as she physically could... so basically to the end. With more grit then skill at this point the blonde slowly traversed the challenge. There were a few sticky points like when her fingers started to slip but she made it through. Three down, three more to go.

Block Run

This is all about agility! Five two by two cubes are lined up six inches apart on a rod. Keep your footfalls light or the cubes will spin, just waiting to throw you off. Take a running start and go! You're going to need that momentum for what comes next.

If you roll 1-2 and have chosen agility as your modifier: You're in luck! The lowest you can roll with agility for this task is 3.

If you roll 1 and have chosen strength as your modifier: Your feet fumble on the first block and you teeter backwards, just narrowly catching yourself on the platform to pull yourself up and try again. Re-roll 1d6 for this task only. Or hit the water and call it quits. Up to you!

1 - What? You weren't expecting the blocks to turn? Or did you just want to go for a swim? Is your foot wet?
2 - That looked painful. I hope you didn't turn your ankle... You're not going to fall in, are you?
3 - Grats! Halfway has never looked so awkward. You fumbled to start but it's smooth sailing from here on out.
4 - Arms out on either side of you is the best way to balance, yeah?
5 - You took an extra second to plot your course and find your zen, but good show dude.
6 - Flawless.

Dessie shook out her hands, after that last challenge they were a little numb and she wanted to be sharp for this next part of the course. Five cubes situated on a pole like some giant colorful kabab would not be easy to traverse if they were stable but these little ******** spun. She had watched others fall on this challenge and she was determined not to be one of them. It would take timing, precision, speed, and most of all... luck.

With one more bracing breath the young woman took off running. The first step was bad, the second better, but third was the one that took her out. She had over corrected after the first two cubes started to rotate on her and before she could do anything about it she was heading for the water.

After surfacing with a muttered cuse Dessie took the offered towle and started to dry off as she vacated the course. They still had more people who were raring to go and her wet a** was just in the way now. Well at least she made it halfway right?
