Unsurprisingly, Dione had contemplated marathons and runs before but never committed. She wasn't against them in any way and if nothing else she had cousins or her sister to run with, but it just didn't seem to happen. Now, as she was about to do something so many levels beyond that, she kinda wished she had such things under her belt. It could be training, even if the last marathon she had agreed on was maybe two years ago. Oh well! At least she was fit and she exercised on a regular basis. Di couldn't pass this kind of thing up anyway. It just looked too fun, the kind of energy she loved. And even if she didn't get far in the end, she would try her best. Heck, and if she wiped out before the finals, she could cheer others on.

In the moment, though, she felt plenty excited but also so, so nervous. Talk about a thrill. Even with the nerves running through her, Di was amped to get going. And, maybe after, she would finally try out some marathons!

She concentrated on breathing while waiting for her turn. Mere seconds to go before her run... Di exhaled. All right. Let's do this.

((Dione will be wiping out on the SPIN CYCLE, aka part 5 of round 1))

On cue, Di hopped onto the first step, though momentarily had to check her balance before she kept going. No time to think, no time to plan. Just move, move, move. She bounced to the next bumper, then the next, quickly finding a rhythm to it. She hit each beat as if it was the most natural thing. She never came anywhere near close to slipping off ever again.

Looking up, Di was surprised to see the Big Dipper just a leap away already. The first set had gone by so fast, it threw her off for a second. Had she just tuned out for the entire time? Holy s**t. Awesome!

But, still no time to think too much. She had to get to the next part!

Di leaped from the last bumper, and grabbed for the Big Dipper bar. For a second, she prayed she wouldn't miss. The moment her hands got a grip, she hung on for dear life. Giving under her weight, the bar slid down the track, taking her with it. The ride, wind in her hair, was all such a rush! Almost enough to distract her from the ache in her arms from the force. Was she that heavy? As she careened down, her hands didn't slip and her arms didn't fail her. She could deal with the slight wear and tear. Just had to time her next jump-!

She certainly flung, but the landing was another story entirely. "s**t!" Dione hissed, barely grabbing onto the first tree in time. She had to time the distance...but her arms were still sore. Her heart raced, and all the excitement was starting to catch up with her. Oof.

The tree started to sink under her weight. Timing and distance, timing and distance... She had to get to the trapeze but everything was happening so fast, and she knew deep inside that she was already falling off her groove.

But she couldn't give up!

Di launched off the tree, over to the first trapeze. She started losing air a bit soon, leaving her flailing to catch...catch...catch...come on! She floundered. Her fingers managed to curl around it, but it was too close for comfort. She swung back and forth a few times. Di needed the time to center herself, to focus. Arms sore as they were, they kept steady while she held on. The problem was, would she be able to do that with the next one?

She took a leap of faith, and would have to keep doing that until she either made it or splashed down.

The moment she landed, the blocks started to shift and turn. Dione crowed in surprise. She struggled to stabilize, jerking her ankle as she did. Okay, okay. It was just a tweak. Di grit her teeth and forced herself forward. She wobbled on a few blocks, and it kept irritating her ankle more and more. Pain began to blossom in a few places, between her arms and shoulders, as well as her foot.

She could push through this! She had to. It couldn't be any worse than an intense workout, right?

Di struggled on, her speed basically diminished. She had to get to the end of this track and jump onto the wheels up next! She was so, so close to the end...

Dressed in a loose white tunic, Eion descended the spectator's steps in search of seating. His bone-threaded belt shifted silently against his waist as he half-turned to beckon down his companion. Most of Destiny City sat in those stands, each bench full to precarity, but a few spots remained toward the middlemost section. Eion sidled in with silent cooperation.

By now, the contestant started her run. Black eyes followed her frame, thin and wiry, as she put herself through the course. She had balance enough to cross from one set of platforms to the next, ever moving, never slowing, mouth open and breath caught like dew on the air. She made it to the other side in short order.

"Isn't that something." Eion's lips twitched; it was more a crease than a smile.

Eion spoke over his shoulders. "It's as poetic as Aelius's failures." His attention flickered back to the contestant, a stranger wedged in a self-contained rat race. He sat, legs crossing, hands restless. They hooked around the thin metal like greedy claws.

"Win or lose?" Might as well make this interesting.

Similar attire for the afternoon hadn't been a conscious effort, but an overlapped sense of fashion and a happy coincidence. Her slight frame was draped in a white romper with lace detailing along the front and just and just above the hem of the shorts. She too had pale skin and dark eyes, but where his were warm, her's were cool, along with the silver braid curling over one thin shoulder. Jewelry was minimal, kept to a single, thick linked gold chain around her throat and a solid cuff bracelet around one delicate wrist.

She made her way down the bleachers with care on medium heels, following her tastefully dressed companion down to a row with an stretch of open bench.

Her eyes flicked up as she reached him and his voice floated up to her, following the progression of the agile woman as she speed her way through one obstacle and to the next with minimal obvious effort. "Perhaps he should have signed up as well."

Taking a seat beside him, she crossed her legs demurely, hands folding on the top of her thigh, and looked back to her dark haired peer. "Are we speaking of winning over all in the entire competition, or in a more personal sense of simply completing the course?" It made a difference.

Eion rolled his head from side to side with his evaluation before shrugging. "I can't spare the time for it." Between the preliminaries, the wait times, the event itself, and any expectations of meeting afterward, Eion's meager three hours failed to meet their minimum expectations. Delphine, however, had the time to spare. No timeliness hovered over her head when she unveiled herself of magic. She had no need to don skin like him.

"Completing the course," he answered briskly. He gestured toward the contestant, announced by the overhead speakers as Dione, who plowed through the course like she was running on his starved hours. He wondered, briefly, if she was.

But her show of strength and fitness and propensity to glide through obstacles marked her as the physically-fit-type they wanted. It said little for her mind, however. A slab of meat was still a slab of meat with no intelligence to put it into motion. "She looks like she has the skill for it." But was he feeling optimistic? Chewing the inside of his lip, Eion wagered her motions. "What do you think?" He looked to Delphi quizzically.

She glanced back at him sidelong and contemplative before remarking. "Ah right, he's still on a bit of a short lead. If the opportunity presents itself again, I do not mind holding the leash." There was only the briefest of pauses. "Temporarily, of course." Aelius wasn't her peer, but he wasn't her subordinate, either.

But today wasn't about Aelius. It was about this competition and trying to forge a better bond with one of her teammates. So Delphine returned her attention to the race.

The girl, Dione, was moving swiftly through the obstacles laid out before her. If they were to make any sort of guess as to whether or not she'd complete the course, they'd best make it now before she got too far. "I think she'll make it. She seems quite fit, and so long as over confidence doesn't trip her up I see no reason why she couldn't reach the end." Unless her endurance boiled over at the start and dried up midway through.

"Then I say she fails." It wasn't personal — no gamble was a gamble without an opposite wager. And Eion had very little opinion either way; a course of this nature tested physical endurance, but they functioned as rat races. Anyone fit enough to balance their weight through taxing trials would reach the finish. It said nothing of tactics, of thinking on one's feet. No surprises lurked for one Dione Beaumarchais through the course's duration.

Eion shifted, his feet finding the edge of the bench before him. Arms folded over knees like two loose reeds over water. As he pondered, he tongued his lower lip.

He circled back around to earlier conversation. His voice dropped, taking on that secretive mumble that hides away in crowds, and he cocked his head to better reach Delphine. "I have three hours to play human; Aelius has nothing to do with it. But if you're offering…" Drawing a breath, Eion measured his words. "He needs multitarget combat training. He should learn how to play in a team."

His gaze found their contestant again and calculated her progress. "She's nearly done. You might be right."

She tipped her head so she could better hear him, and realized she'd misspoken. Now it was her turn to speak softly, murmuring beside his shoulder so he could hear but no one else could. "I only meant the competition would linger longer than you'd be able to attend, and he wouldn't be permitted to linger unattended." Though she supposed that could have changed. "But I am offer, yes."

Whatever the need, Delphine was there to offer assistance in one way or another. It was odd, having so many bodies to show a measure of loyalty to, but she found she rather liked having them.

Most o the time.

Delphine looked back down at the contestant as Eion mentioned her again, and a little smile graced her lips as she watched. "It does seem likely, though there are still obstacles to stand in her way."

Dione pushed off her feet, surged up, and grabbed onto the wheel. But she felt...so heavy. Drained. Her heart raced, and deep down she was still worried about her ankle. She had to push through. Had to. Di jumped to the second one, but barely caught herself on it. She was starting to slip...

In a last ditch effort, she jumped one last time. One hand caught, then slid off. Di tried to clamp her other hand on, but missed. She fell, and before she knew it, water engulfed her.

She came back up, then angrily splashed the water. Shoot! And such a good start, too. With a huff, she swam off to the side and got off of the course. A failed run, no second chances. Real disappointing.

Right now, all she could do was try to calm herself down. Sometimes you just don't win. Others probably were going through that as well. It just showed that she had more to work on between her body and mind. That's all.

Dione glanced over at a couple of people who seemed to be watching from the spectator section. Oh, had they been watching her run? That was a thing, wasn't it. She could only imagine the impression she made with it. Still, she waved and tried to smile.

Eion shifted toward her, their closeness unremarkable in the crowd, and solidified their intimate sphere of conversation. He could smell her breath on every parting word — grapefruit parsed with greens. His return sounded harsh against her demure backdrop. "He could've stayed unattended. I wouldn't mind if he disqualified and drowned. Better that it isn't on your head."

Her offer was noteworthy, however. Whether she actively sought team relationships or she had an affinity for babysitting, her connection already proved more beneficial than Quartz or Chrysocolla.

The contender's splash roused empathy from the crowd, some clapping while others bemoaned her near-victory, and Eion shifted from his closeness to his companion. He contributed a few claps into the conciliatory applause. How predatory of us to want someone to lose. To feel glee in watching that tumble from victory. To tell ourselves we can do it better.

She waved, but it could've been to any member in the crowd — a friend or a lover or a family member or simple crowd endearment. He stood, then, and ushered Delphine up. "We should go — unless you're feeling charitable."

The ballerina winced as she watched the contestant splash into the pool, and though she felt no emotional connection to the other girl she felt a certain sense of disappointment over the near victory. She had been betting on a finished run, after all.

Ah well, she supposed that was the nature of the game. If they all completed the course in spectacular fashion it wouldn't be much of a competition. "Not a bad effort on her part," she mused quietly as she stood at Eion's ushering, palms smoothing the lace of her romper into place.

She considered for a moment, weighing whether or not she was feeling charitable, and after a moment she shook her head and lead the way along their row of the stands. "Not especially. How are we on time? I don't know about you, but a mimosa sounds terribly refreshing after this heat." She glanced back over her shoulder at her companion, smiling up at him. "My treat."

To the girl they'd been watching she offered a a polite curl of lips and a little wave in return. She'd tried, that counted for something.

Eion withdrew the small pocket watch from the inside of his tunic pocket. 1:30 read the clock, two hours past current time. "We've an hour and a half." It slid back in quietly, covered by the mixed roar of the crowd.

Sidling through was nary a trouble for one ballet dancer under five feet and one youth still far from adulthood. And while he did not return her smile, lost as it was among his other social mores, he assented to her offer. How long had it been now since he sat at a restaurant, especially one with a bar? Since he was served with company at his side? Even with Yuuri, they each settled down for a coffee rather than cocktails. But any risk, even being caught underaged, seemed paltry when he had no personal stakes.

Eion felt for the keys in his pocket. He spared a last curious glance over his shoulder at the competitor — voluminous hair, tall, dusk-skinned, and sought to remember her face against the many seen that day. Would they cross paths again? Doubtful.

He wholly stopped for a moment and blinked. There, on the screen —

Eion smiled then, averted his eyes, and followed Delphine back to the car.
