The Ascent - 3 (Becomes 5)
Okay. Last round hadn't gone so amazingly, but Shane had still qualified and was moving on to the next round. Thanks for small mercies, he supposed? In any case, he was raring to go and make this next round an improvement. He was a driver, he was a winner, he was gonna do it! Things were gonna change, he could feel it!
And this first start went pretty well! The thirty degree incline was nothing for Shane's legs (never skip leg day, folks!), and he executed the leap to the first platform without a problem. Indeed, the subsequent leaps went decently well, though as he went on he started to doubt the platforms' structural integrity. Was this thing quality checked before the race...? Well, too late now!
The Descent - 2
Huh. A human-sized spiderweb. How interesting! Shane was very wary of those sticky-looking cords, though. What was going on there? Would probably be totally nasty. He didn't want to touch those.
Though he jumped in without hesitation, once was in the web, he found he was in more trouble than he expected. This was part maze, part thinking-ahead exercise, part test of the limits of one's coordination. This felt like another agility-biased obstacle, and for a moment Shane thought he was thoroughly screwed. He missed one cord and braced for impact... but managed to catch himself before the very end. Praise be to his muscles.
The Gears - 2
Okay, he made it out of the web. Apparently, however, he was still going to be made like a bug, because the next obstacle was gears! A bug trapped in a big, spider-laden machine. Kind of scary, but now wasn't the time for fear.
Shane made the mistake of thinking that slow and steady would get him through this section. WRONG! When the gears increased in speed, he was very much in danger of being spun off. oh god oh god ohgod OHGOD- okay. He made it. Not gracefully, but he made it. Yikes.
The Pipe - 3
Shane needed to step up his game, or there was no way he was going to make it to the next round. He wanted to execute the run across the top, but there was just no way. Instead, he had to crawl through the pipe as it sank and he felt as if the water was hot on his heels. Almost as if it was sentient water that could magically crawl just behind him every step of the way. Gotta go fast, Shane...
The Treads - 5
Okay, apparently he'd evolved from bug to mouse. He'd scrambled through the tube and now was at two mid-air treadmills. There was no time to question how they got there, how they were running, or any other kind of minutiae; he had to MOVE. After the hassle that was the middle of the course, this one seemed to go much better. He might have wobbled a little, but he got right back up and made the leaps. All right, now this was the way it was supposed to go!
The Chains - 5
Final obstacle, GO! It was do or die time in so many ways. He used his momentum to fling and swing his way through the chains, and while he could have done better overall, this obstacle went pretty well! Once he was on the other side, he did indeed kiss the ground, because DANG that was a little touch and go for a bit. He finished strong, but would that be enough to get him qualified? He hoped so. Still, he wondered about some of the weird stuff on the course. The shaky platforms, the water, the possibility of something weird in the water... normally he was a "do, think later," type, and he hoped that all these questions coming up now wouldn't be his undoing.

The young woman had been watching Shane's progress through the course, as she intended to watch all of them. He didn't seem as though he'd had an easy time of things, but he hadn't given up and he'd given a strong push towards the end. That was important. It was good to know that they'd managed to find someone with a bit of determination. It would make for a much more entertaining final round. She brought her hands together in a slow clap. She'd left her coat in the observation area, without it looking perhaps a bit less imposing. It was obvious enough that she wasn't another contestant, but what did that make her? One of the hosts? Her spring green gaze was intense and there was something about her grin... "For a moment I almost didn't think you were going to make it. Surprise, surprise. How do you feel? Think you've got enough in you for one more round?"

While resting up, rehydrating, making sure that he hadn't cut himself during the wire fiasco, so on and so forth, Shane was approached by a mysterious woman. There was something slightly... diabolical? Well, mildly unsettling in the way the woman was looking at him. Still, he brushed it off and scratched the back of his head with a nervous laugh. "Yeah, well, I did make it! No point in going over all the what-ifs, right?" He sucked in a breath and exhaled heavily. "And I've definitely got another round left in me! I'm gonna fight to the finish, no matter what it takes!" He thought about asking if the obstacles had been quality checked, but that assumed that this lady was one of the hosts. Maybe she was a reporter? A VIP spectator? Best not to assume anything.

"Wonderful to hear, so very good to know." Her smile broadened into one of delight. Tourmaline was rather pleased with the endeavor so far and if the rest of the contestants who made it through the Gauntlet were as enthusiastic as this one then all the better. "Follow me to the waiting room, please. You'll be able to meet some of your peers there-- maybe issue a friendly challenge or two? Most importantly, though, make sure to rest up! The grand finale is right around the corner..." (( Please proceed here. ))
