 ❀ The Basics ❀
Name : Âu Tuyết Vân - (oh thooet vuhn), shortened to Vân ✿✿✿✿For simplicity's sake, her name can be typeset as Au Tuyet Van, or just Van. Meaning : ✿✿✿✿Âu - The clan name. ✿✿✿✿Tuyết Vân - Snow-white cloud Tuyết Vân was born in the mountains of North Văn Lang (Vietnam), under unusual circumstances—it was snowing outside. It's not impossible for snow to fall in Văn Lang, but it is naturally a rare event. Her mother therefore commemorated both her daughter's birth and the once-in-a-generation snowfall by calling the first part of her name 'Tuyết.' Matching the second part of her name to the first, however, proved to be a challenge. It was the fashion to give daughters two-part names these days, but most Văn Lang mothers named their daughters after generic flowers, such as 'Lan' or 'Mai.' Thu Nguyệt made the decision only shortly after coming into contact with her child's intelligent, unreadable gaze. Thus the name 'Tuyết Vân' came to be. She possessed all the beauty of a soft white cumulus, but also all the secrets of a cloudy, shielded heart. Age : 23 Gender : Female Place of Origin : The Northern mountains of Văn Lang (Vietnam). It's because of her family's proximity to Southern Tianxia (China) that she takes on some cultural traits from both regions (Vietnam and China).
❀ Status ❀
Alliance : Legion Path : Warrior Stage : Captain
❀ Appearance ❀
Height : 5'5" (165 cm) Weight : 121 lb (54.9 kg) Body Type : Vân is of athletic build. Her constant training means she has more muscle than fat, but she's lean instead of bulky. Her bust-waist-hip ratio is generous. Skin : Pale, as her name suggests. Her scales are a light violet. Eyes : Violet Hair : Black; long and wavy. Tied up in a side ponytail, and partially secured by a headdress.

❀ Personality ❀ ✿✿✿✿✿✿ Evasive - It's nearly impossible to tell what Vân is thinking at any given moment. Her words and body language don’t quite match up, the mark of a Lunarian trying to keep her peers at arms' length. At the end of a conversation with Vân, others come to realize that they know very little about her—she dances around talking about important matters pertaining to herself, instead preferring to focus on the other person. She appears kind and attentive enough as a result, but keener Lunarians would peg her as distant, insincere, even deceitful, for she also seems distrusting... but it's true. It takes a decidedly opposite, sincere type of Lunarian to get close to Vân.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Ambitious - As a daughter of a highly successful military family, Vân was raised with the lofty goal of tenryujin rank in mind. At this point, it could be said that she puts more pressure on herself to be the greatest than the rest of her family does. This ambition results in an extremely competitive attitude, for she compares herself to others to judge her own worth. Vân played the đàn tranh briefly as a child, for example, growing bored of it quickly. However, when her older brother also decided to learn to play, she immediately resumed her lessons and went on to master the instrument. Often, this combination of ambition and competitiveness moves her to bite off more than she can actually chew, but she stubbornly refuses to give in until she reaches her goal. ✿✿✿✿✿✿ Unforgiving - While Vân is beginning to make a name for herself as a ruthless fighter on the battlefield, this trait tends to bleed into her interactions with others on a day-to-day basis. As with herself, she measures other Lunarians by a particular standard, and gives everyone a chance. Should someone fail her, though, Vân is quick to pass judgment and administer punishment. If she does forgive, she certainly does not forget. In the rare event that she feels she has failed herself, she will be incredibly hard on herself, often sulking for days while she works tenfold to make up for her deficiencies. Vân can seem quite severe because of this, but in the end, it's out of her desire to improve herself and others around her.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Proud - Over Vân's short lifetime, she has accumulated quite a bit to be proud of, be it her impeccable, beautiful appearance, her warrior status, etc. Success lends her confidence, and it's evident in the way she carries herself. There's no doubt that she deserves to be proud of her accomplishments, but she frequently takes it a bit too far. Physical maintenance becomes vanity, and her confidence spills over into hubris as she starts to overestimate her own competence and capabilities, often blinding her to her own flaws and leading her to tackle impossible situations on the battlefield. Although Vân has made some headway on coming back down to earth, she'll still never admit aloud when she's been wrong—she'll only acknowledge it to herself in her journal.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Resolute - It is no easy task to change Vân's mind, because she takes painstaking steps to qualify each of her decisions and opinions. Vân is guided by her own sense of justice, in her mind independent of external influence. Political, religious, and land ties have little meaning to her, because she believes they are determined by tradition or “obligation,” rather than by logic and reason. This leads Vân to reject politics, organized religion, and ethnic obligations, but does not prevent her from siding with the Legion after deciding that their interests align with hers. However, Vân is no lover of justice. She'll kill anyone she doesn't like.
Quirks and Idiosyncrasies ✿
✿✿✿✿✿While Vân is not bound to a particular religion, she is surprisingly spiritual, believing in the existence and influence of the Goddess Lunaria. It's not uncommon to find her meditating between training sessions. Also as a result of her spirituality, Vân makes the effort to see beauty in all aspects of life, and strives to bring it into her fighting style. This will lead to her choosing the Shaolin shuang gou as her Captain stage weapon. And perhaps, in due time, her connection with the Goddess will motivate her to forgive others more freely.
✿✿✿✿✿It’s true that Vân generally avoids aligning herself with a predetermined set of morals. However, to her, there is no bond more deadlocked than blood bonds. Vân is fiercely loyal to her family and will defend them at any cost.
✿✿✿✿✿One would never believe this on first sight, but Vân is very easily provoked to throw a punch. Call it impulsive violence, but whether this is because she's misinterpreted a gesture, been taken by surprise, is extremely happy, etc., is anyone's guess—the reason is different every time it occurs. This is an improvement on her Academy days, when she would use her fists to do all of her talking. It still gets her into trouble, unfortunately. Crew member BikiCakes calls this particular trait, Vân's ‘Rawr factor.’
✿✿✿✿✿Vân wastes nothing. Not breath, not movement, and this results in a very efficient fighting style. Additionally, Vân is obsessively environmentally friendly. Should she spill a bit of water, or accidentally harm an animal, she'll go out of her way to right the problem, or else pray fervently to the Goddess for forgiveness. It is, admittedly, a bit ridiculous.
❀ Hobbies ❀ ✿✿✿✿✿✿ Training - Since there will always be someone better than her, Vân is always going to need to train. Most of the time, you'll find her pummeling her body with Quán Khí Đạo, tirelessly training from dawn to dusk. Fun? This is her definition of fun—there's no feeling quite like the exhilarating rush after wrestling another Lunarian to the ground with scissors kicks and animal fists. It's only after she's accomplished this that Vân will pursue her other hobbies.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Cooking Competitions - "Food is amazing. Competition is amazing. What could possibly go wrong?" Not much, except that Vân is not very skilled in the culinary arts. Every once in a while, the Văn Lang villages rally together to hold rice-cooking competitions. Vân has an abysmal track record, but she tries... and will continue to try until she gets better.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Flying diều sáo (Vietnamese kites) - "The kites are built in a traditional Vietnamese style with eight ovoid wings attached, plus five bamboo flutes in graduated sizes, which are mounted on top and make a pleasing drone when the kite is flying. The faster the kite swoops, the more magical the sound of the flutes is." In Văn Lang, kite-flying is seen as a sport, a hobby, and a religious custom. For Vân, this means the integration of her competitive spirit with her spirituality. The soothing sound of the flutes against the air provides her a measure of calm after a long day of training. Her brother is usually her kite-flying partner, and the time they spend together goes toward sibling bonding.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Playing the đàn tranh (Vietnamese zither) - Vân really only plays the đàn tranh to stay ahead of her brother's skills. It's pretty much the only thing that she's better than him at. The music itself is important to her, however, because through it, she can communicate her thoughts, feelings, loves and troubles. She plays this instrument to unwind after a particularly stressful day, releasing all of her defenses and simply allowing her fingers to pluck at the strings.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Shopping - Is this surprising? Vân is quite the conspicuous consumer, and spends much time and money in Lunaria's markets. It doesn't matter whether she's shopping for clothes, jewelry, weapons, or books—she'll find a reason to buy it. It's not wasteful because she'll come up with a way to justify her purchase. One has to wonder whether it's Vân who's fueling Lunaria's entire economy, even when she's just window-shopping.

Tuyết Vân currently lives in a large ger with a Noble roommate, Bataar. It is in a Noble neighborhood just off the seaside.

❀ The Family ❀ In addition to the Emperor and the Divine Powers, Vân's family also demands her [grudging] respect.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Father - Âu Vinh Hùng (oh vin hoong) - "Glorious Hero" Vinh Hùng's parents obviously had high hopes for him when they named him. Hailing from the northernmost peaks of Văn Lang, the majority of his years have been devoted to the way of the warrior. The long years of dedication have earned him a reputation as a fearsome warrior of the Legion. Not a weak man by any means, his stony gaze is enough to make potential enemies think twice about facing him. This old tenryujin favors his son over his daughter—he's very happy that Thanh Long has become a respectable captain, but would much rather spoil his daughter and see her a lady. Vân won't have any of it, though, and spends much of her time trying to prove herself to her father. ✿✿✿✿✿✿ Mother - Hoàng Thu Nguyệt (hwahng too wet) - "Autumn Moon" Also a Northerner, as apparent from her surname, Thu Nguyệt started out a warrior, against her parents' wishes. That all went out the window when she fell in love with Vinh Hùng. It sounds like a sappy love story with a happy ending... but when are women ever the same after marriage? Thu Nguyệt managed to fulfill her warrior calling, not on the battlefield, but in the home. No one in the Âu family dares to disagree with her, for fear of invoking her almighty wrath (i.e. braining you with a large pan). Her husband often wonders what happened to the demure nymph he married, but he doesn't mind too much as long as she takes care of the children. She's on Vân's side when it comes to being a warrior, pushing her to become a great heroine, but Vân is usually too afraid of her mother to take advantage of this.
✿✿✿✿✿✿ Brother - Âu Thanh Long (oh tangh long) - "Blue Dragon" Thanh Long is five years Vân's senior, and a captain of the Legion. This difference, and simply the fact that he is male means that he has a substantial advantage over his sister when it comes to warrior performance. He is the main driving force behind Vân's growth as a fighter because she struggles every day to become like him, and to win favor with her father. Thanh Long humors his sister her endeavors, good-naturedly coaching her when she falls short. As the most laidback of the family, he's usually the one keeping everyone on the same page, and keeping them from killing each other. Vân deeply respects her brother for his talent and his patience, and outside of their competitive relationship, they like to go fly kites together.
❀ Family Background ❀ Note: Tianxia and Văn Lang refer to Chinese and Vietnamese Lunaria, respectively. ✿✿✿✿✿The history of the Âu clan begins in the third century B.C.E., when they emigrate from Southern Tianxia (China) to the Red River Delta of Văn Lang (Vietnam). Under Lord An Dương Vương, their familial lands increase exponentially in size, the territory spanning from the southern Tianxian (Chinese) states and the northernmost Văn Lang (Vietnamese) mountains to the Red River Delta. However, his leadership is short-lived, as he is quickly defeated by an ambitious rival warlord, his Tianxian cousin Triệu Đà. Thus begins the blood feud between the Âu and the Triệu. Despite their related ancestry, the Âu pledge allegiance to their new land, cementing the nature of the relations between their brothers and them for the next millennium.
✿✿✿✿✿It's not until 938 C.E. that the Âu manage to reclaim the boundaries of their old kingdom with the covert assistance of the Emperor's Legion. Over those 1200 years, their proximity with their Tianxian brethren had inevitably led to a cultural mixing. In response, our beloved Âu clan pioneered a Sino-Vietnamese hybrid martial art called Quán Khí Đạo. Developed to counter the Triệu's Tianxian attacks, Quán Khí Đạo combines four schools of Tianxian and Văn Lang martial arts, aiming to harness and balance all aspects of "the way of the fist and the energy." The Âu are fighters. Their 2700-year history encompasses millennia of wars and skirmishes, all dedicated to their political beliefs and ideals. And now that they are indebted to the Emperor, they have also pledged fierce loyalty to him and his Legion.
✿✿✿✿✿Boasting a 1500-year alliance with Lunaria's imperial powers, it's only natural that Tuyết Vân follows in the footsteps of her ancestors.❀ Character History ❀ ✿✿✿✿✿Many years removed from this, Vân's family hasn't experienced quite as much upheaval as their ancestors have.
✿✿✿✿✿Vinh Hùng and Thu Nguyệt married in a modest village ceremony, and moved to a small cabin near Mount Phan Xi Păng, one of the highest peaks in the country. They were thrilled when their first child came three years later. Thanh Long was their golden child. He was the one to carry their names to glory, the one who would perpetuate the Âu and the Hoàng lines. Long was the answer. Thu Nguyệt became pregnant again five years later, and Vinh Hùng fervently wished for another son. When their new daughter's cries first filled the cold winter air, Vinh Hùng stormed out of the room in bitter disappointment. His wife was deeply hurt by this, and decided to name her daughter after the snowfall in which she was born. Nguyệt prayed that her daughter would retain the coldness of the day, and the coldness that her father showed her, in order that she would one day become a warrior worthy of his acknowledgment.
✿✿✿✿✿This was not to occur for a long time, however, since Vinh Hùng demanded that Tuyết Vân be raised as a lady might—skilled in cooking, in the arts, in maintaining a household—since that was all she was fit for. Her mother begrudged her father these opinions, often screeching at him for being close-minded and insensitive. Vân herself showed no interest in playing the zither. Any attempts at teaching her ended in earsplitting screams and wails. On the other hand, the girl adored cooking, but had no observable talent in it whatsoever. Even so, she vehemently practiced, hoping to become as good as her mother. Thu Nguyệt noticed this tireless trait in her daughter, and realized that, if she could apply it to the warrior arts, she might get somewhere as a fighter instead.
✿✿✿✿✿Vinh Hùng still did not approve, but a few hours of screaming and a couple of broken pans later, his wife managed to convince him to allow her to enter a martial arts school. At 9 years, Vân was a young recruit, but her competitive spirit allowed her to stay abreast of her classmates. Vân first learned Quán Khí Đạo under her brother, since her father initially refused to coach her. Eventually, though, he too has begun to give his daughter pointers on how best to use the fist of the mantis, or to perform a scissors kick from behind, or how to handle the deer horn knives and butterfly swords. When questioned about his change in attitude, Vinh Hùng still refuses to say anything of consequence. However, Vân is determined to wrestle his acknowledgment out of him one way or another, and has since made improvement in leaps and strides.
✿✿✿✿✿Vân spent three long years in Lunaria's Academy, before graduating as a fighter. Mere days before her commencement, however, the Âu household was ransacked by a platoon of cloaked Nobles, their target being Captain Thanh Long. Her older brother's abduction shocked the Legionnaire community, and paved the way for Vân's growth as a fighter. Her loss was not one to take lightly; losing her brother meant losing her mentor, trainer, and best friend. She has resolved to get him back at any cost.

 ❀ Alliance ❀
Her Reasoning : Vân is a Legionnaire not necessarily by doctrine, but because the Emperor's Legion has been good to her and her family, and because she has been personally wronged by the Noble faction. The greatest case of this was when a squad of Nobles ransacked her house in the rainforest to kidnap her brother at the end of her days as an Academy student. Since then, she's been fueled by a burning hatred for the ones responsible. And though she recognizes that most Nobles are not directly attached to this incident, Vân assumes that all have it in them to perform such a sin, and is thus wary of all Nobles.
Current Opinion of the Nobles : Predisposed to dislike.
❀ Fighting Ability ❀
Magic Type : Weapon Projection Weapon : ✿✿✿Fighter - Song Diêp Dao (Shuang Dao, Chinese Butterfly Swords) ✿✿✿Captain - Song Diêp Dao (Shuang Dao, Chinese Butterfly Swords) and Lujiaodao (Deer Horn Knives) ✿✿✿Tenryujin - Shuang Gou (Twin Hook Swords)
Beginning with her Fighter stage, Van sometimes uses Deer Horn Knives as a secondary weapon. By her Captain stage, she is equally proficient with both Butterfly Swords and Deer Horn Knives. She also carries around several concealed weapons, in particular the Southeast Asian karambit.
Magic & Fighting Style : Since youth, Vân has been trained in the Sino-Vietnamese martial art Quán Khí Đạo. Quán Khí Đạo is a modern synthesis of several Chinese and Vietnamese schools of martial arts, so Vân is relatively well-versed in all of them and their integration with one another. As time goes on, however, Vân will single out the Southern school of Shaolin as her preferred style, in particular the Leopard animal style. During her Captain stage, she masters the Five Animals style, and ultimately returns to the mountains to specialize in a branch of Shaolin called Choy Li Fut. Vân strongly prefers mid to close range, hand-to-hand combat.
She is adept at illusory weapon projection, making her weapons appear to take on a much different shape than they really do (ex. shorter and smaller). The element that she has an affinity for, and that she most prefers to infuse her weapons with, is metal (air); secondarily, water. Additionally, she is known to focus her ki toward her limbs in order to improve her reflexes and speed. With enough preparation, this results in such a quick turnaround that a less proficient Lunarian would believe that she has “teleported.”

 ❀ Academy Student ❀
All Lunarians start out here. Just average youths attending classes; however, it is at this stage where your Lunarian begins to choose their path in life. To serve the Legion? To serve the Retainers? Should they become a priest? Or maybe a captain? Your little peasant begins to work their way up the chain from here.

❀ Fighter ❀
So your little baby is growing up all big and strong and decides to kick some a** on the dark side—light side? Whatever. They're all revved up here with some starter's gear, practicing hard and getting their game on. Fighters tend to be those more daring and adventurous.

❀ Captain ❀
Yeah, after some long, hard and grueling work, your fighter finally made it here. They're all decked out and shiny now, looking hot in a primped up version of their old, geeky starter's gear. Armed with a weapon specially made for them, they're ready to kick butt and chew bubble gum.

❀ Tenryujin ❀
It is said that for every Lunarian born, there is a star in the sky tied to their soul, characterized by a spirit animal that represents them. Upon achieving a level of mastery in their chosen vocation, the Lunarian is able to absorb the spiritual energy of the star and regain some of their ancestral power. Their bodies change immediately when this happens; fingers become dragon-like claws, their scales cover more of their bodies. Spikes and even horns can form, as well as a tail. As a Tenryujin, their powers expand considerably.
[ requirements ] There is no stage beyond that of the Tenryujin.
