Van stared in disbelief at her opponent, suddenly oblivious to the cheers and shouts that echoed around the arena. The crowd was much larger this time because of the semi-finals, but that wasn’t the only reason. They wanted to see a match between two Legion captains.
“This is a joke, right?” she asked, her face a mixture of surprise and amusement. For standing in front of her, stretching, was her long-time teammate and sometimes lover, Kasem Makdam. As fighters, they’d worked countless missions together under their captain, and though they had taken different paths upon promotion, they’d never been too far out of touch. Until now. “Where’re Liang and Rikimaru? I’m sure they’d love to see this.”
The woman shook her head. Kasem had followed an even darker calling than she had, if that was possible. Nicknamed among their colleagues as the Bogeyman, he was the one who was tasked with breaking into Nobles’ houses in the dead of night and killing them in their beds. Where Van exercised restraint, Kasem had none.
Since this particular matchup had clearly been unaccounted for by the Legion, it lay upon the two captains to decide who was going to advance to the finals. “So, how’s this going to work?”

Kasem was just as surprised to find himself facing Van, but was less concerned about the outcome. Instead he simply grinned, the white of his smile bright against his deeply tanned skin. “I dunno, Van. Why don’t we just go about this our usual way?”
He pulled a short knife out of his pocket, one that he was sure she was used to. “Everyone came for a show, so we should give them one. Wouldn’t want ol’ Rikimaru over there to get upset.”
It was at that point in time that the gong was struck, and Kasem wasted no time in closing the distance between them, his hands balled into fists. The knife he held glinted under the afternoon sun.

“Then I’m not going to go easy on you.”
Van felt no inclination to smile back when Kasem suggested their “usual” way. Their spars usually ended in her loss, though neither painful nor humiliating. For that she supposed she should be thankful, taking a calculated loss was better than breaking something and being out of commission for weeks on end. The other captain was bigger, stronger, and more ruthless than she was, so while garnering personal acclaim might have been an interesting prospect at one point, even Van had to admit that he had a better chance of surviving the finals.
Her hand moved under her skirt for a second, and once out she revealed her weapon of choice. Not the butterfly swords many were used to seeing her with, the karambit she held in her hand was much more unassuming. There was no real intent to kill from either of these captains, but seeing the way Kasem barrel at her now was enough even for Van to second-guess that thought.
The woman caught his knife in the curve of her blade, deflecting his other fist with an open palm as she spun to avoid taking the brunt of the hit. The turn allowing her momentum, Van swung her right leg high, hoping to catch him straight in the head, or otherwise, execute the showy scissors kick.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way, baby,” Kasem replied cheekily, knowing the remark would irritate his friend. He’d expected for her to pull out the old karambit—it wasn’t much, but it upped the stakes enough to make for an interesting fight.
She was fast as ever, he noticed when she caught both of his hits easily, but the subsequent deviation from her usual martial arts style caught him by surprise. He couldn’t do much when her thighs wrapped around his head, the spin of her weight sending both of them crashing to the ground.
“Ow, that’s new.” Kasem slashed forward and across with his knife, forcing her to keep her distance so she couldn’t close in and pin him. Rolling quickly forward into a crouch, he remained low to the ground just long enough to orient himself. His knife hand raised in front of him to deflect attack, the man leapt toward his waiting opponent once again, left fist poised to hit second.

Distantly, Van heard the crowd roar when her kick connected and she twisted her body upward to perform the scissors kick. The move, though flashy, was difficult and probably could not have occurred without some cooperation on Kasem’s part. That was her major contribution to the fight—she’d make things interesting as her superiors had instructed.
She was pleasantly surprised to discover that Kasem hadn’t been expecting the assault, as per his comment, and she cracked a smile for the first time since the fight had begun. “You deserved it,” she said, though the comment was cut short when she had to duck to avoid a blade in her eye socket.
This put her directly in the path of his coiled fist, which she saw too late. Even as she tried to turn away from the hit, it grazed her upper back painfully and caused her to fall forward. Hissing in pain, a familiar anger began to boil in her blood, one that would drive her to return blow for blow.
Making the best of the movement, Van reached out to stop her descent, using the ground as support to swing both legs in quick succession back at Kasem. Little girls did cartwheels. Hardened fighters did this.

Kasem chuckled as Van ducked predictably. It was probably lucky that her enemies didn’t know this, but the easiest way to force the female captain into any given trajectory was to threaten her face. It had worked this time, too, but the man hadn’t anticipated the two feet that were swinging towards his own face now.
He leaned slightly left and rolled his right shoulder back as her leg came down, crossing his arms to brace against the first kick. By the second he was entirely out of her way. Regarding her with a rueful smile as he shook out his arms and she recovered, he said, “You always land on your feet, don’t you.”
Not waiting for her answer, Kasem faked a knife throw before following it, both arms outstretched in expectation of a grappling move. If he could get his hands on her, it would be over in a matter of seconds.

Van was disappointed to see the other captain largely unaffected by her assault, excepting the apparent pain she’d caused to his arms. Knowing him, though, he’d complain about it to her later. It was almost enough for her to consider a more deadly type of attack, but it was in their best interests to keep each other largely unharmed for the final.
She didn’t even bother to respond to him, not deeming the comment worth her breath in the middle of the fight. Her muscles twitched when he made to throw the knife, but a second later and a Kasem in her face told her that he’d kept the weapon in his hands the entire time. Cursing under her breath, she curled the fingers on her unarmed hand into the half-fist of the Leopard style and launched it upwards towards his face, hoping to delay him enough to allow her a split-second getaway and prolong the fight.
When his arms wrapped around her waist regardless, she swore again. Her chances of getting out of this were slim, but she resisted anyway. Part of her still wanted to go to that final.

It was over, and they both knew it—of this Kasem was certain. The hit to his face hurt and would probably bruise a bit, but it was a small price to pay if he could go to the final in her stead.
He was a fool if he ever expected Van to stop struggling when he had her like this though, even at the very end, which was why he’d kept the knife. She was trying to pull at his short ponytail even as he started to pull her into an armlock.
“There’s a reason I keep that short, you know,” he commented, pressing the blade to her throat to force her submission. It was only after the referee whistled for the end of the match that he let up, stepping back and offering a hand to help her up. “I’ll be sure to represent us well in the final.”

Perhaps she didn’t want it that badly, she realized, stilling immediately under her old teammate’s superior strength when the knife appeared at her throat. She trusted him with the weapon—as a captain, she knew Kasem knew where life ended and death began—but even so, being the object of his violence was arguably one of the more unnerving things she’d had to face in her recent past.
Van was relieved to hear the whistle for the end of the match, more so when Kasem let her go. She turned to peer up at him, taking his extended hand with some reluctance.
The crowd around them had gone wild, their expectations of a high-flying, flashy match having been met. Yet neither paid the noise any mind, and in that moment there were only the words of their exchange. Van squeezed his hand briefly—as a concerned friend, and not as a lover—before releasing it and allowing her hand to drop to her side. “Kasem, promise me you’ll be careful.”
It wasn’t until after he’d assured her he would that she turned to leave the ring, to rejoin their old teammates among the audience.
