It was okay, Van could fix it.
The scars on her face were ugly, three slashes down one side, the last one slitting down one of her eyes. They were raised and the scabs were a dark red from where the blood has congealed, in may ways they looked like a giant cat had scratched her. Thus was his weapon, three metal claws which seemed to cut through her skin like butter, removing some scales and causing her to loose a lot of blood. Her masters said they would never heal and all her life she would have to walk around with a reminder of how foolish she had been, she trusted him, she cared about him and he threw her away - Just like Mei. Eventually they would look like three white lines, flat to the touch but she knew they would always be there, always. Though she was thankful she had not lost her sight too, her eyelid was cut slightly but the attack had not harmed her vision. Knowing that it could have been worse was a small comfort but at the moment it did not seem to matter much. She was devastated, scared and more concious about her appearance than she had been in a long time. She was never beautiful - and now she never would be.
What made things worse was the fact her best friend was getting married in a few days! It was a happy occasion and she did not want her own misfortune to taint it, she wanted to make it perfect for Yue and that meant Sara would have to put on a brave face. She was not going to let her worry, not on her wedding day, not because of her own idiocity. So she would have to hide them for now and she did not know who to turn to at first, but she soon come to realise if anyone could fix this, or at least mask it, was Van. Sara did not know the dark haired Lunarian very well, however she did know that she knew a thing about make-up an hair from her own flawless appearance and her kind nature meant she might help. So with any luck maybe she could work some magic, though at the moment she felt like she would need more than a little magic, she needed a miracle to hide this from her loved ones. She did not even want to know how Huang would react...
So she waited in the doorway, bandages wrapped around her face, covering most of it like a mask causing some people to look at her oddly which made her feel very self concious and uncomfortable. She knew Van attended the Academy and she knew if she waited long enough she would run into her. Though after a hour she was starting to give up hope. Then she saw her, wondering down the hallway. Sara remained still as she approached and then, like a flash, she grabbed her arm and pulled her into the bathroom. The door shutting behind them with a thud.✿*゚‘゚・✿.。.:*.:。✿*゚’゚・✿.:。✿*゚‘゚・✿.。.:*.:。✿

It was the end of another day at the Academy. For the past few weeks, Van had taken to spending hours in the libraries after school in order to catch up to her classmates... and this time had paid off. She had passed all of her exams, and now that her graduation was imminent, there was no longer a need to slave over those textbooks. Now, the young woman could channel all of her energy into training to defeat that Noble who’d humiliated her just a week earlier.
Van herself was still recovering from quite the physical battering. Though the bruises were now fading and perfectly concealed under her makeup and long sleeves, the incident was still fresh in her mind. The day hadn’t been too different from this one—Van was walking the hallway, on the way home after a long day of studying. That afternoon, though, she had been approached by a fighter and her two accomplices, and they’d kneaded the guts out of her to drive home a single point: beauty helped her none. Even so, Van’s appearance remained largely unchanged. If anything, there was more of the makeup now to cover up the scrapes and bruises that’d resulted from that particular confrontation.
She was determined now to prove that beauty could coexist with deadliness. She’d exude it, and find it in every punch she’d throw. If it meant trading sleep for more training, then so be it. Decreasing hard work on any aspect of herself was out of the question, her appearance included. There was only increasing hard work on everything else. The young woman had barely finished this thought before she was abruptly pulled into the ladies’ room. For a moment her heart began to beat faster as she whirled around to look at the offending Lunarian, ready to land the first blow if necessary. Those girls were back!
But they weren’t. Van was surprised to find not three, but one girl standing in front of her. It was a moment before she realized that it was Sara. The purple Lunarian hadn’t recognized the other at first, for they hadn’t really run into each other since Sara appeared at Van’s house a few weeks ago, and after that, since Sara approached her to return her clothes. Now, the girl had bandages concealing the majority of her face, and Van couldn’t help but widen her eyes a bit in curiosity.
Dropping her hands to her sides—she couldn’t imagine Sara meaning her any harm, after all—Van’s purple lips parted to speak. “Sara, is that you? What’s going on?”

Sara waved her hands a little with a small chuckle, Van looked ready to knock her block off but she hoped that she would recognise her before she had time to swing, despite the new mummy fashion which she was exhibiting Van seemed to calm quickly. When she said her name all Sara could do was smile, giving her a small polite bow and confirm that she had guessed her identity right, she guessed she had a lot of explaining to do. "I am sorry I startled you. I did not mean to... but I thought it best if we talk in private." She stated looking to the side as she brushed her hair over her shoulder, a old nervous habit of hers. She then realised how much her stunt did indeed look like a kidnapping attempt. It might have been a little extreme plucking the girl out from the hallway with no warning but she did not know what else to do, even though she did not show it at the moment she was scared. Now in the bathroom together it just seemed to get worse, she could feel butterflies in her stomach.
She took in a deep breath and gave her another bow, even lower this time. Long strands of dark teal hair brushed over her shoulders towards the ground and her jewel like eyes closed, she felt her heart start racing. She hated asking for help. "You have been so kind to me Van, but I am afraid I must ask your help once more." Her voice was still calm however you could start to hear the cracks of emotion which indicated something was wrong, something was really wrong. She was trying to be strong however her courage seemed to be leaving her by the second and she was kipping around the point she had to make. Maybe she thought that if she spoke the words it meant she had accepted what had happened to her and she did not know if she was ready to do that yet. She did not want to admit she was a women, unmarried and mutilated for life in a city like this, where beauty and vanity seemed to be so close to the hearts of so many. She knew that in a city so populated with beautiful, charismatic, charming women that a girl with half a face would not have much look ever finding happiness with anyone. She was ugly. No one fell in love with a ugly girl.
She stood straight once more trying to force the words out whilst she was still able to speak. "It's my face you see, its..." She began to explain as she raised her hand to the side of her face, her throat seemed to go dry as she did so. She looked at Van with the one pale green eye which was still visible from the mass wrap of bandages on her head and in that moment it started watering. She had never had to verbally tell someone before and now she was trying the words seemed to get caught and refuse to come out. Her gaze slowly wondered down to the floor, her fist clenching before she leaped forward, resting her head on Van's shoulder and letting out the tears which she had been holding in, maybe if she cried them all now none would escape her at the wedding. If she was allowed to be sad now she could deny her right to be later. She hugged the dark haired Lunarian around her torso, not a tight hug but it was a hug none the less. Sara used to be iffy about physical contact, however Yue had opened her up to it. She was only sad that her best friend could not offer her that comfort now. ✿*゚‘゚・✿.。.:*.:。✿*゚’゚・✿.:。✿*゚‘゚・✿.。.:*.:。✿

Van watched the other girl with some incredulity as she bowed and apologized. She’d forgotten how polite Sara tended to be—it’d take a little time before she’d get used to it. She wanted to speak and tell her that it was alright; if Sara wanted to talk, all she needed to to was ask... because if Van hadn’t recognized the other girl as soon as she did, she probably would have punched her square in the face. The face which was now mostly concealed under bandages. Idly, she wondered what had happened. Surgery, perhaps? Or had it been battle wounds? Van couldn’t imagine how the girl would come across the latter though—Sara hadn’t seemed like much of a fighter, and why anyone would want to hurt a sweet thing such as her was beyond Van.
The words stopped, unspoken in Van’s mouth as Sara continued to explain herself. She couldn’t do much but listen intently. Furrowing her brows slightly, Van nodded while the other girl bowed again and pleaded for help. It wasn’t so much that Van didn’t want to help Sara; it was more that she couldn’t figure out what the girl would need from her that she couldn’t easily get from someone else she knew better. That, and Sara seemed to be holding back a flood of emotion while she spoke. Her voice was calm enough, but the fearful look in her single green eye told her that there was something else to behold under the seemingly peaceful façade.
“Sure, what can I do?” Van asked dutifully. She didn’t have the heart to scold Sara, especially now with the look she was giving her. The Legionnaire listened as Sara began to answer—however, she wasn’t expecting what happened next, for the next thing she knew she had a weeping girl on her shoulder. She had no idea what to do.
It was in this moment that Van realized that whatever Sara needed help with probably lay under the bandages on her face. Momentarily enlightened, and taken by a bout of sincere sympathy, Van moved her arms around Sara’s shoulders to return the hug. She stood there for as long as Sara needed to, occasionally patting the other girl on the back as she tried to make sense of what the other girl was saying. Van herself didn’t say much, except to tell her that it was okay. She hoped that her understanding was made clear anyway—even without words.
After Sara seemed to have calmed down a bit, Van reached behind her back to fish for a tissue in her bag. Wiping away the last of the tears falling from Sara’s single eye, Van gave her a small smile. “It’s okay. What do you need me to do? I’ll do my best.” Later, she’d wonder what exactly it was about Sara that compelled her to do things like this.

Van was so gentle and sweet, the way she comforted her, the way she whipped tears out of her pale eye. Her attitude was motherly, in the end Sara needed someone to tell her it was okay and the fact she was being so nice really did make her feel better, enough to help her gain the courage to try to explain again. As she moved away from Van she closed her eyes and tried to relax, just a little. "Van this happened at a stupid time, my best friend is getting married and I do not want her to find out, I do not want to take away from her happiness." She explained with a truly worried look in her eye, she had to go and meet Yue soon, who could this have not happened a couple of weeks later?
She then realised she did not actually explain what she was on about. "Oh right, well I guess I should probably show you..." She nodded, reaching behind her head to undo the wrap. When the material finally fell from her face her injuries were revealed, they looked their worst at the moment - they were yet to fade into the white marks they were going to be because they were so fresh. One side of her face was red, with dark red slashes going from her forehead to half way down her cheek, one of them went straight down the centre of her eye whilst the other two were more to the side. They were raised and swollen and extremely tender at present.
Sara looked at her and then looked at the side a little, she could not really look people in the eye at the moment. Not until she got a clear reading of her reaction to them. "I just wanted to know if you could help me hide them... they are pretty bad, they are never going to heal but... I thought maybe you could help me with my hair or some make-up or something. Just to hide them for the wedding." She explained nodding her head and staring to fiddle with her fingers nervously. She did not even know if Van could help, all she could do at the moment was hope.
She sighed and then decided to look back up at her. She stepped forward again to stand a little closer to the dark haired Lunarian. Did it make her a bad person? The fact she was a little jealous of Van at the moment, she would not wish this on anyone but seeing such a beautiful young lady in front of her, it did not make her feel too good about her current situation. "I... I did not know who else to ask. I do not have many friends these days..." She admitted, in all honestly she had lost two of the closest people to her almost one after the other, life was hard at the moment. ✿*゚‘゚・✿.。.:*.:。✿*゚’゚・✿.:。✿*゚‘゚・✿.。.:*.:。✿

Van did her best to keep a straight face as she waited for Sara to take off the bandages. The way the other girl was making things out to be, it sounded like half of her face had been ripped off to the bone, or some similar horror. The Legionnaire was somewhat relieved to find that this wasn’t the case, but she soon came to realize that what Sara was asking of her wasn’t an easy task, even for the most experienced makeup artist. Resisting the urge to hiss in pity—if Sara was anything like Van, the sympathetic motion wasn’t going to be welcomed—Van took one step back, cocking her head to one side to survey the damage.
Finally, she sighed and spoke. “Alright. I can help you now, and I can help you before the wedding, but you’ve gotta realize that you can’t hide this from your friend forever. I’m no healer.” Her tone was matter-of-fact, but not derisive. Van looked the other girl squarely in the eyes to make sure she understood. Then, grabbing onto both of Sara’s wrists, she pulled the girl in front of the bathroom mirror. Pulling a hair tie off of her wrist, she began to secure the other girl’s hair away from her face, exposing the wound in its entirety.
She tsked once at the younger girl in the mirror, and turned to pull a large makeup bag out of her satchel—Sara had indeed come to the right person if she’d wanted makeup help. Something clicked in Van now, as she began to prep the girl’s face, explaining the process and what she was doing so that Sara would understand. They were the words of someone who knew what she was doing, and up until not too long ago, this was all that she was really good at. Now that she was about to advance to Fighter rank, she could claim proficiency in a bit more, but her mastery over makeup had never changed.
A blur of brushes and a copious amount of foundation, various concealers, and powder later, Van stepped back once again to survey her work. Not bad. The redness, at least, had disappeared, and the swelling would go down in time for the wedding—she had told Sara so. The scabbing was noticeable only if one was positioned particularly near Sara. As Van went in for the finishing touches—blush, gloss, mascara—she had to think of how she was going to break the rest of the news to Sara.
Pursing her lips as she stepped back to reveal Sara’s reflection in the mirror, Van sighed once again. “I can’t touch the wound over your eye right now. It’s important that it heals without getting infected before you can put any makeup on it.” Indeed, the scabs on Sara’s cheek had been easy enough to take care of, but even Van had to concede that she couldn’t speed up nature’s course of healing. “I’m sure I can restyle your hair so it covers that eye though. If I may?” she asked then, one hand hovering above Sara’s headdress temptingly.

"I know." She sighed, her eyes looking to the side a little. She could never hide anything for Yue and until a day or so ago she never wanted to anyway. However telling her would be harder than it was telling Van, at the end of the day Yue always looked at Sara like a little sister, she took it on herself to protect her and to keep her close. However there was nothing she could do to protect her from what happened. She did not even know how she would react, she always seemed to happy and carefree. It was that what scared her the most. "Its just, she is so happy right now - I do not want to be the one to bring her down. The truth is I do not know how to tell her." She tried to smile, however at the moment it was hard. Most of all she felt worried, however they were many underlying emotions beyond that, guilt, shame, anger. All of which Sara herself was not very good at dealing with.
Sara had never had a make over before but admittedly it felt weird. Admittedly she never wore make-up before and as a experience it brought he away from her trail of thought. She was not looking for a distraction, however she appreciated it none the less. Van had a certain charm about her which calmed her, she was thankful to her for that. "I was stupid Van, I let a Noble get too close. Now my mistake will be written over my face forever. To remind me how it feels to be betrayed by someone I thought cared." The pun was intentional, the long haired Mongol even chuckled a little. Maybe it was too soon to laugh about it, that was if she ever was able to - but at least she was starting to accept it. Maybe it would get easier over time. The ache in her heart was as fresh as her wound and that was probably why she was taking this so hard.
Sara was not surprised when Van said she could not apply anything to the cuts themselves, however she felt like she had watched her enough to know what do to when she could apply some for herself. "That is okay, do not worry about it." She nodded, with a small glimmer to her eyes. Sara had a lot of adopted family in Lunaria, Huang was her brother, Yue was her sister - Van, she was more of a cousin, someone who you are not around every day but when you are you are happy to see them. Someone who is always there when you need them. She felt a little selfish, all she seemed to be doing was taking from her and she was yet to repay her. Sara knew she needed to ask someone for help, she just hoped she knew that when the time come she would be there for her. To catch her when she fell.
When she dark haired girl reached for her headdress all Sara could do was lean forward and let her take it. "Oh, yes, I mean whatever you think is best." She would trust her. Sara had always been so proud of her hair, it was one of the only good qualities she saw herself having. It was long and thick like her mothers. Maybe that was why she never cut it, she remembered her mothers hair almost stroked the floor and she always wore it down.

Van crinkled her small nose at Sara’s first words as she continued to apply makeup; she had the habit of doing this when the conversation got tricky and she was trying to figure out what to say. Admittedly she didn’t know Sara too well yet, and she didn’t know how the younger girl would take advice coming from a near-stranger. Even so, Van felt the need to say something about it. “Sara,” she began gently, “It is better that you tell her, than she find out on her own. You don’t have to do it before her wedding, but be careful."
Chuckling once at the pun that followed, Van rested one hand on Sara’s shoulder to deliver a reassuring pat. It appeared that both Legionnaires were trying to make light of the grim situation, but Van at the very least knew the deeper implications. In the end, it didn’t matter whether you’d been childhood friends or lovers or anything of the sort—when it came to war, most Lunarians would default to their own faction. Sara had learned this the hard way, and Van herself had been shocked into this reality with the loss of her brother. Now wasn’t the time to mention such a thing, however, but Van did have something else to say. “That is how it goes, with Nobles. They often get under your skin and then use it against you. You can never be too wary, love, even with other Legionnaires.”
Sara seemed the trusting sort, after all, and hopefully she’d learned from this—it was just a pity that she would have the scars to remind her forever. Van exhaled softly as she carefully lifted the soft white headdress from Sara’s head, unconsciously feeling the material for quality. Not bad, she noted, before putting it aside to pull out a hairbrush.
Taking hold of Sara’s thick locks, the woman began brushing them until they shined. She couldn’t help but notice that Sara had lovely soft hair, perhaps even rivaling her own. Van stepped between the mirror and Sara now, looking at the younger girl’s face pensively as she thought of her options. It was a moment before decided on her next course of action, and began to brush the girl’s bangs back into place.
Using one careful finger to part Sara’s teal locks to the left side, Van smiled briefly. Oh, the difference it had made! Sara's eye, and her scars were mostly concealed already. She wasn’t done, however, and brushed the bangs down so that they were longer and neater. Having no hairspray on her at the moment, Van ran her fingers under water from the sink, before getting to work teasing the hair on the crown of Sara’s head, before turning to place the girl’s headdress back on her head. Moving now so that Sara could see her new hairstyle, Van smiled more brightly this time, proud of the job she’d done.
“All you need to do is grow your bangs just a bit longer, and it will be perfect. What do you think?”

"I will be, I promise." She stated looking to the side, in a odd way she felt like Van was scolding her, admittedly she could not complain. She knew she was being rather difficult at the moment. She gave a awkward look as she then went on to talk about love, it was a subject that she had clearly not had the best experiences in. At the moment she did not think she wanted to get any closer to it, afterall the memory of her first loves betrayal was still as sore as the marks he had left on her face. "No truer words have ever been spoken, we can not all be as lucky was Yue. However I think I might be done with men for the time being." She chuckled a little, she needed to laugh - there was nothing else she could do about it.
When the girl was done Sara leaned forward to look in the mirror, running her fingers down her new found fringe. She smiled and jumped to her feet, turning around to wrap her hands around Van's neck. It did not make them go away, but at least now she felt a little bit better. Hopefully this would stop people from staring. "Oh wow Van, you can not even see it." She completed her on her make-up skills. People might think it was a shallow thing to learn, though at the moment they really helped to make Sara feel more confident.
Van was not shallow, not to her.
Sara buried her head in the other girls shoulder. "Thank you. I know I keep saying this but - one day when you need me I will be there. I am not just using you, you have a kind heart and such a sweet smile and personality. I really want to be friends. One day I will take you out, so we can just do some normal girl stuff for once." She stated, leaning back a little to look into those lovely eyes of hers.
She wondered if Van liked the hotbaths.

Van smiled gently as she watched Sara’s sheepish gestures when she mildly chided the younger girl. The Legionnaire liked that Sara listened to advice such as this. It wasn’t that Van was trying to be imposing; she was just looking out for Sara’s own good. In any case, she was happy to know that this time her opinion would be heard, and hopefully applied. Snorting softly at the younger Legionnaire’s swearing off of men, she had one more thing to say. “That’s fine, so long as you keep your options open when the time comes, you know?” Van herself had had a rocky love life during her Academy years, but it was all settled now—it’d be no different for Sara.
The woman was still standing proudly in front of the newly makeovered Sara when she was suddenly hugged around the neck, something that, admittedly, surprised her. It was a moment before Van could hug Sara back, pressing her to her chest as the Lunarian buried her head in her shoulders. An unfamiliar feeling bubbled up in Van now, but it was not an unpleasant one. Was this how it felt to be helpful to others? Perhaps such a prospect was not a bad idea after all. “You’re very welcome. Just let me know whenever you need me to do something like this for you again—I’ll be more than happy to oblige,” she said then, and she meant it sincerely.
As she met Sara’s pale green eyes with her own, she realized that she had come to care about the younger woman in not only a sisterly way, but in a protective way. She hoped, of course, that she would never need Sara to help her. Van would be the one administering all the help!
With a wry smile, Van patted Sara on the shoulder once, reassuringly. “Friends it is, Sara.”
