This is a private RP between Van [Kurama no Koishi] and Jun [Koonjan].

Setting:

The Imperial City - Cherry Tree Hill
The sun has barely risen above the horizon, coloring the sky a lovely blend of pink and orange. Van has just reached the tree after her morning jog.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 13, 2010 11:45 pm

A bandaged hand found itself on the trunk of the single cherry tree on Cherry Tree Hill. Van was equally alone.

The girl leaned on the cool wood for a moment, as if giving in to her fatigue, but pushed on nonetheless and began her cool-down stretches. Reaching slowly toward her toes, Van closed her eyes and went through the count. Right leg three times, left leg thrice, repeat. She followed the same routine every morning—the sky was still dark when she woke for quán khí đạo sessions with her father and her older brother. Afterwards, she'd go on a run, racing against the sun's ascent—hopefully making it in time to see the first rays of dawn as she reached the top of the hill.

She made it today. It really was rewarding to be able to say that she'd already accomplished something while the rest of Lunaria had been asleep. It was even better that standing atop the hill was akin to standing on top of the known world. No feeling was comparable to this, in Van's mind. Her days always got off to a good start this way. The Academy didn't start for hours yet, though, so Van obviously had to do something with her time. This varied from day to day; she often decided to eat, write in her journal, cram, even meditate. Seeing as there were never others around to influence this decision, Van had the benefit of complete peace and quiet. This morning, the Lunarian had more to get done than just feeding herself.

Cracking open a weathered textbook with a sigh, Van began the diligent work of studying. The large tome was—contrary to appearance—not beaten up from studious Lunarians poring over its undoubtedly [un]interesting contents, but more because this particular girl enjoyed beating things she did not like.

It was too bad that Battle Ethics happened to be having the biggest exam of the year today. "Damn battle ethics," the girl mumbled to herself, only half hearing her own words in her concentration, "Why can't we just hit things and get it over with?"

❀❀❀Jun was not studying for Battle Ethics class nor was he sleeping. If it wasn't for Van's assumption that everyone was in their beds, she might have noticed the conniving blondie hiding amongst the blossoms of the ancient cherry tree. This miscalculation could potentially ruin her day and that was exactly the kind of result Jun was seeking. In his fingertips, nestled between his index and thumb, was a string that was connected to a bundle of red bamboo tubes. This was the classic, New Years firecracker. Thankfully, some of these survived Jun's spring cleaning accident. He hoarded the noisemakers every New Years for days like these. Although it wasn't New Years, today would mark the calendar of his first scare of the year. Having been enrolled in school, the time for his antics were dramatically reduced. Oh, well. The compensation for the hiatus was due in moments time.

❀❀❀Jun peered below, careful not to rustle a branch. He couldn't make out the features of his victim no matter how hard he tried. Van's luscious black hair and headdress made it impossible to distinguish anything but gender. In spite of this setback, he did not feel disheartened at all.

❀❀❀So, we have a girl today? Oh buddy, this is going to be great.

❀❀❀He eavesdropped into her conversation and he spontaneously perked up once he heard her condemn battle ethics. This made his heart flutter. Jun would have raised his fist in the air in agreement, but his objective forbade him from doing so. He licked his finger, the air chilling his skin. The breeze had stopped; it was time to act.

❀❀❀Jun quietly lit a flame. Surveying the young lady on the ground, he closed the gap between the fire and the firecracker. He leaped. Promptly, he began to laugh maniacally, his tongue lazily resting on his bottom lip. The packaged bamboo tore apart uproariously, ruby chips chaotically bursting in the air. Loud popping noises obliterated the peace of the morning and a thick smoke trailed behind him. As he dropped towards Van, he could finally see her face. She was good-looking! Jun had complained about all the "uglies" that had lived in his new neighborhood. He desperately wanted to move back to his previous location. At least there were some hot chicks by his old home. Regardless, Van pushed Jun's buttons in all the right places. It was a good day. His hot chick quota, as well as his trouble quota was going to be fulfilled.

❀❀❀Too bad he lacked the foresight to avoid what would happen next. He was still in mid-air.

This unit will cover the philosophy of reconciling with the opponent after the end of a battle. Although it is easier to leave him or her for dead, it is more courteous to— Van was about to fall asleep. It went without saying that the Legionnaire completely disagreed with the idea of the class as it stood. To ask her to regurgitate such bullshit for an exam was a bit of a problem, then. She knew that none of the words she read now would stick, and try as she might, she'd probably write down the complete opposite of the correct answers on the exam. That was how she had received a failing grade last time. Flipping a page and prying her eyes open, the girl resolved to continue anyway.

She needn't have tried, however, as the events that unfolded in the next thirty seconds shattered the quiet, her sleepiness, and perhaps most importantly, all prospects of studying for her test. The sudden sound of firecrackers bursting ruined the glorious silence of the dawn, and jolted Van from her lethargic state.

In a split second, the Lunarian had thrust her book aside and had rolled onto her feet, looking around wildly with her heart in her throat. Was this an ambush? Van didn't have time to wonder too much before a figure dropped from the branches above. This was it! An enemy! Without thinking, or rather, before Van could have time to think, her fist had already shot out toward the unknown Lunarian, landing squarely in his stomach. Battle Strategy was infinitely more useful than Battle Ethics, and Van could recite this textbook quite well—always get the first hit.

The smoke overwhelmed the girl soon afterward, and she dropped her defensive stance to hack out a lung. A few moments passed before she was able to breathe well enough to make use of her senses again. Idly, she wondered why she had not been incapacitated in the time that she took to cough and wheeze. She found her answer lying on the ground.

She had slugged, not an enemy, not even a Noble, but an unarmed boy.

❀❀❀He did not expect a thing. Once Van rolled onto her feet, Jun realized the horrible error in his choice of target. This was not the type of girl to scare. She didn't seem to be one of the timid types Jun usually encountered in his old neighborhood. But, at least she looked good. During this pocket of time, Jun was able to see Van's striking features and fortunately, his eyes had not fooled him. She was one smokin' chick and ironically enough, she was just about to smoke Jun with her knuckles.

❀❀❀The ferocity of Van's fist jolted his system and his stomach felt like it was ricocheting off his body's walls. His eyes slammed shut and the hinges of his jaw fell flaccid. Yet, his voice refused to announce its presence. Only expired air whistled through his gritted teeth as he fought with the pain overheating his abdomen. Sharply, Jun's limp physique took a nose-dive, his limbs spread loosely in the air. His headband trailed behind his arched back as the slope came closer and closer. He crashed onto the hillside's grass, verdant stains marking his clothing and elbows. Jun groaned. Clutching his stomach, Jun rolled around in agony. His eyelids were still tightly sewn as he grunted in discomfort. Out of all the girls in this day and age, he just had to choose the feisty, independent one. Grinding his molars, he wrenched his voice out from its hiding place.

❀❀❀"Ugh... What the hell," Jun cradled his gut as he propped himself up from the ground.

❀❀❀Dirt was smeared across his tanned cheek along with touches of vert. He made an effort to wipe some off with his thumb, but he only rubbed the soil in some more. His breaths were weighted. It was a tiresome affair just to engulf air. Everything from his forehead to his calves were throbbing, but he wasn't going to let this beastly girl know that.

❀❀❀Though his muscles were aching, Jun managed to smile toyingly, "Well, that was cute."

Van heard the words before she saw his face, and couldn't help but smirk a little as she heard the other's slightly pained hiss of confusion. What the hell, indeed. She was quite happy with the fact that she'd managed to teach another wayward boy that some girls could pack a punch, and this could be inferred from the rather smug expression on her delicate face. A slow breath issued from her parted lips as she nonchalantly ran one hand through her thick black curls, the Battle Ethics textbook long forgotten on the ground behind her. If she had been terrified out of her wits earlier—and she had been, no doubt—she was the image of relaxation now.

An incredulous sound bubbled out of Van's throat at his next words. What was he trying to do, flirt his way out of trouble? The thought amused rather than repelled her, and she began to approach the boy on the ground, walking with a rather catlike gait. Bending neatly at the waist, she found herself quite close to this blondie's face. A bandaged hand snaked out to touch his dirtied cheek. "You’ve got a bit of dirt on your face," she murmured coyly, gently running her thumb across the hollow of his cheek. Never mind that he was absolutely covered in grass and soil at this point, it was now that she seemed to notice his striking looks for the first time.

As she fixed him with a violet gaze, Van realized that this boy was not... unattractive. Quite the contrary. She liked the crimson eyes staring back at her, she liked the blonde hair, the open vest—okay, she'd probably make fun of him for his pants at some point, but what was more, she liked his face. His boldness, touched with a bit of insolence—mm. The girl straightened up.

Stretching a hand out—ironically, the one she'd just used to punch him down—Van offered her assistance in helping the boy up. She'd at least see if he was okay, first, before deciding whether she wanted to hit him again or kiss him.

❀❀❀Jun swallowed. Before, this girl had punched him in the stomach. Now, the same girl was doing close-quarters combat with him. As she advanced upon him, Jun decided he would never completely understand women, no matter how hard he tried. He gulped again, his throat dry from all the energy he had exhausted before. Nevertheless, Jun began to enjoy the attention he was getting. Sneaking in a grin here and there. In an effort to preserve his pride however, the tanned boy fruitlessly tried to avoid Van's hand, swerving his head stiffly to the side. Once her thumb ran across his cheek, Jun grunted, disliking how she was babying him. Of course, he had a quick change of mind when he was able to see her attractive features up close and personal. Was it her hypnotic eyes or was it her supple lips that attracted Jun to her? Her body wasn't bad too. Something about her character ignited his daring side, causing interest to burn in his eyes.

❀❀❀Jun accepted her help, wrapping his warm, strong hand around hers. With another grunt, he hoisted himself up, his open vest slightly askew with one side almost off his shoulders. Tensing his muscles briefly, he boosted his body towards the Lunarian before him. Falsifying his clumsiness, Jun pressed himself against Van (with the most notable area being her chest), using his free hand to grip her hips for support.

❀❀❀"Whoops! Lost my balance."

❀❀❀He held his position.

She never saw it coming, though she should have. This Lunarian had attempted to pull a trick on her earlier, after all. Van just hadn’t expected another one quite so soon.

As soon as she realized what had happened, she stiffened in his arms, racking her brain in order to figure out exactly how she had ended up in this position. Wasn’t she intimidating? The academy boys were not above heckling her with wolf whistles and suggestive statements, but they always stopped short of touching her—just in case, you know, her infamous reflexive fist came out. Jun either didn’t know this, or didn’t care. In any case, he certainly wasn’t afraid, and it was this that had Van at a loss for what to do.

Van tilted her head up to search the boy’s wine-colored eyes for signs of mischief, mockery, or laughter. She found none of it, instead becoming distracted by a certain burning quality in his astonishing gaze. She started to feel a little warm. Suddenly, she was acutely aware of all the places they touched. His fingers were still curled around hers. His other hand had snaked its way around her, holding her to his shamelessly exposed, muscled body. The girl was pleased to find that the top of her head was just level with his chin, and that their bodies fit perfectly in this pseudo-embrace.

She swallowed nervously. Man, she was screwed if she felt this way about every boy ballsy enough to touch her. Fortunately, Jun had been the only one. Even so, Van was still unhappy about the fact that he’d managed to surprise her—twice. But he wasn’t the only one capable of throwing curveballs, and Van was determined to make another attack. She relaxed her posture, no longer appearing tense. Her free hand slid down her side to grasp his hand on her hip. Van’s close-lipped smile was cryptic as she held their clasped hands between them, separating their bodies. Just as quickly as they parted, though, she took a step forward, one foot between both of Jun’s own. Would he step back? Her smile only widened as she dropped his hands in the interest of wrapping one, both arms around his waist. What would he do now?

“A bit clumsy, are we?” Her words were inconsequential, her tone innocent. Two could play this game, and someone had to give.

❀❀❀Jun's eyes never lingered away from hers, the warmth of their bodies gathering, pressing, matching. A fiery thrill accompanied every movement and every still. If every encounter evolved into this, Jun would've considered staying in that tree everyday. His taut abs nestled themselves against her comfortably and his charming, yet cocky smirk remained static on his face.

❀❀❀He was expecting another punch, but Jun was prepared for it. Whatever was going to happen, the amount of contact he was getting was enough of a reward for him. The positives outweighed the negatives in this situation therefore, Jun thought of it as a decent price. However, he didn't expect her next move as he felt her body fall into a calm.

❀❀❀Inclining his head to the side gently to observe what was going on, Jun's gaze was baited by the sight of her fingers sliding in between his. He couldn't read her smile. Was she liking it? Was she going to launch a fist into his face now? Was she going to flying kick him in the crotch? His thoughts were suddenly filled with disappointment once he felt the air filter between their torsos again. Then there was a step. Then there were her hands, wrapping around him in some sort of embrace. Jun smiled.

❀❀❀A pocket of laughter escaped his lips at "clumsy." This girl had game! Jun's heartbeat pulsed strongly, a slight red on his cheeks.

❀❀❀"You like this, huh?" He winked at her, his grin bathed in confidence, "No surprise. A lot of girls do."

❀❀❀And at that moment, he slapped her rear.

It could be said that Van had mixed feelings as she discovered that the boy wouldn’t budge, even at her own [false?] advances. This one seemed to be a tough nut to crack—he was at least as flirtatious as she was. While she was pleased at the prospect of a fair match, she did not like the fact that she wasn’t going to be winning anytime soon.

Indeed, her temperament had taken a deep descent toward the worse as she realized his words. Of course she wasn’t the only girl he’d done this to, just as she had flirted her way around half the academy boys. The girl wasn’t quite sure why this mattered to her; she only knew that it had flustered her unreasonably. Stung—and not because of the slap on the rear—Van planted both hands on the boy’s chest and pushed him away. She’d hardly noticed his quickened heartbeat, the slight tinge of red that colored his cheeks, instead preferring to dwell on her own anger... and perhaps, disappointment?

Turning, she gathered her textbook, flipping through the pages with disinterest as she faced the boy once again. Just as suddenly, her eyes flicked up to his face once more, though this time they were no longer coy, but testy.

She flung her arm out, launching the hefty tome at him. Books never made great projectile weapons. Van’s plentiful, neat notes dropped out from between the pages of the book as it flew through the air, fluttering down to litter the ground between the two of them. She didn’t care enough for this to matter right now, though—she only hoped it hurt.

“Hmph,” was the only syllable she uttered, turning her back once more and leaving textbook, notes, and lunch behind in the grass as she started down the hill. She’d come back for them later. If not, someone would have the decency to bring them to her later; they all had her name and homeroom written on them, anyway. Van just wanted to be away from him now. However, this didn’t stop her from looking back at him from halfway down the hill, just to see if anything had changed.
