Van had finally been defeated in the semi-finals, though the loss didn’t weigh too heavily on her mind. She had lost to a former partner, someone she’d trust with her life, so it wasn’t as if she had been in much danger to begin with. Better that she’d lost to Kasem than to a serious fighter from the other side; that would have been embarrassing not only for herself, but for the people she represented. All in all, she thought the Legion had performed well in the tournament, even if they were in the minority.
She’d add one more notch to the scoreboard for her cause, and then go to see her comrade-in-arms win one for them in the captains’ final.
Peering across the arena at her opponent, Van was pleasantly surprised to see that she hadn’t been matched with some thug (though she wouldn’t have minded giving Som a good beating). Instead the man was rather attractive, at least from what she could tell under the bright light of the sun. His attire was strange, and she couldn’t immediately tell what kind of fighter he was, but the pair of sai that glinted in his hands were telling enough to have her draw her own black swords.
Hopefully, it would be an interesting match.

Kane rolled his shoulders and ran the tip of one of his sai through his long, golden hair. His white robes were loose, foreign—the Lunarian hailed from a more rural part of the continent, one that was less affected by war. He’d lost early on, but he’d traveled too far to leave right away, so here he was.
His opponent was a strong fighter, this much he knew from watching the semi-finals, and the swords she was pulling out were new. This might have been intimidating if he wasn’t so convinced of his ability to wield his own sai. Who had better technical ability? It had yet to be seen.
Jogging forward once the sound of the gong rung out, Kane slashed the tip of his sai downward towards her solar plexus, the other held up in defense of her counterattack.

Van reacted almost before she saw the hit coming, bringing up the black steel of her butterfly sword to block the sai that was coming toward her belly. She let her sword continue downward to alleviate some of the force along her blade; though she didn’t practice with sai, she was well aware that they could easily break her swords and disarm her. His wasn’t the only weapon with a hook, however. Catching the moto of the sai with the crossguard of her sword, the captain swung hard outward in an attempt to break his grip on the weapon.
Her right hand came up to slash across, from left to right. Admirably, her opponent was able to partially block the hit and avoid a lethal cut across the chest. Certain other things did not escape damage, however, and Van hopped backwards, a slight flush creeping into her cheeks.
“My bad,” she muttered, averting her eyes briefly, but having no choice but to look up again moments later. She wouldn’t be able to fight if she wasn’t looking at her opponent. Then, as if to brush the moment of awkwardness aside, she closed in on him again, the tips of her blades flashing.

A small smile spread across Kane’s face, despite the fact that one of his sai had been wrenched from his grip and had flown off in the other direction—he hadn’t bothered to see where. That wry smile turned to surprise for a brief moment when he barely managed to deflect her second hit, but returned even when the line of blood appeared across his chest and his robes fell to his feet.
The crowd was chuckling, but Kane had nothing to be ashamed of, especially stripped down to his fundoshi. There was a reason for the color on her cheeks, after all. “If you’d wanted to see, you could have just asked, ma'am,” he declared, laughter dancing in his eyes.
Kane hopped backwards at her continued assault, risking a hit by swinging the side guards of his weapon forward to catch hers. “I’d have gladly obliged.”

Van had been ready to continue their fight despite Kane’s near-nakedness, but she’d had the grace to flush again once he spoke. This moment of distraction allowed him to get into her space and disarm her so that her sword clattered uselessly to the ground just next to them. She switched her remaining sword to her right hand, but it was clear that Kane wouldn’t be allowing her to reach down to grab it anytime soon.
“Perhaps you should put your clothes back on,” she suggested, grimacing a bit at his proximity. It wasn’t as if she was any stranger to the male body—it was that he was wearing a fundoshi of all things and didn’t seem the slightest bit fazed. The way the crowd was tittering now, she was just happy that Rikimaru and the others were in the other arena; they’d definitely give her grief for this match later if they were here to watch it. Her opponent had certainly given the term exhibition match a different meaning.
She was more than willing to wait for him to dress himself, but it seemed that he was intent on continuing the fight. So she spun around, aiming a low kick toward his legs, following with another sideways slash of the sword to coax him to duck.

The mirth in Kane’s eyes had turned to mock hurt at her words. “What, am I not to your liking, my lovely lady?” he asked, opening his free arm wide. “Would you like me to take off my fu—” But she didn’t spare him the time to complete his question, kicking his feet out from under him and forcing him to lift his sai to block her sword as he ducked. A lock of his golden hair fell to the ground.
His balance had been toppled, and he tumbled backwards. When he tried to push his weight onto his arms to get up, he was met with a sword tip to the throat. Kane grinned widely, opening both hands in surrender and letting his weapon drop.
“I yield,” he announced, chancing a nod as he appreciated the woman standing over him, “Anything, for you.” And as if to accent his words, he pressed his fingers to his lips and blew her a kiss.

The captain held her position with her sword pressed to his throat and her boot between his legs—awkward as it was—until the referee whistled for the end of the match and declared her the winner. The bottom of her left eye twitched as she watched him lift his hand to blow her a kiss, though the urge to separate his head from his neck was greatly diminished by the smile on his seraphic face. She swallowed.
... and lowered her sword, stepping aside to sheathe it. Then, peering sideways as he lifted himself off the ground, she nodded once at him, clearing her throat to speak. “A rematch, perhaps?”
Van wasn’t particularly concerned about the way she’d won, so she couldn’t explain what moved her to offer to fight him again. It was a fair match, if distracting at times. Then, realizing the implications of what she’d said, she trotted off to retrieve her other sword and run out of the ring before he could make a smug comment about her roundabout way of asking him out on a date.
That wasn’t what she was doing. Not at all. This was definitely her last match of the tournament.
