Kiran is especially protective of his little sister, whom is extremely shy and also mute. Because of her disability, she has been the subject of much teasing and even bullying. Kiran will chase off any bullies that he witnesses taunting his sister and has since been viewed as a knight in his sister's eyes. For other people, their beneficial use plays a role in his reasons for protecting them. But he also feels indebted to them for being his friends since he doesn't have many of them. He will defend them in a fight or take the blame for something that he knows they never did.
o oHard Working :
Kiran enjoys challenges and putting in the effort to accomplish something. Refining his schemes was probably the earliest development of this trait. He worked diligently on planning out the details that went into plotting schemes. Then it leaked into other aspects of his life. He puts in a lot of work in practicing bāguàzhǎng with Uncle. He is very dedicated in training his pet Aditi. He eventually even became very studious after he received some praise from his parents for getting good grades. To continue getting that positive attention, he decided to keep working hard to earn good grades.
o oCrafty :
After losing his parents' attentions, Kiran resorted to acting out to get any attention from them: sneaking sweets before dinner, banging on things, yelling, being a bit rougher than he knew he should be with his sister. But he quickly found that he disliked the punishment that resulted from his "acting out." So he got a little wiser, and he found making schemes a more interesting pastime than throwing a tantrum and getting punished. He once convinced the neighbors' son that he was shrinking and only a special medicine that Kiran had could stop it. He managed to get a bit of money out of the boy, but when his parents found out, he was forced to give the money back. He has tried to be better at covering up his little schemes, but many times they get found out or blow up in his face. It frustrates him when his schemes don't go exactly as he planned. In his anger over getting caught, Kiran will argue with his parents over the punishment they give him, which usually results in a loud fight and a worse punishment.
o oSurly :
Kiran has had a bad temper since he was little, stemming back to the day of his sister's birth. Anger, bitterness, envy, and hatred enveloped him. He suffered irritability when watching parents dote upon their children because he had been spoiled by his parents' attentions only to have that suddenly taken away, in his eyes, by his sister. While he eventually got over his anger toward his sister, he still has a sour personality and can act unfriendly toward others. As a result, his big mouth and cheeky insults have landed him in hot water numerous times, and he has gotten into several fights for mouthing off to the wrong person.
o oAttention Seeker :
Kiran was spoiled rotten by his parents paying nearly all their attentions to him after he was born. He relished in being the center of their world. Even when their attentions were cruelly, from his point of view, taken away from him, he didn't give up trying to get that attention back. He has never learned that the world does not actually revolve around him and is often frustrated when ignored by others. When acting out only got him punishment, Kiran found other ways to get attention, such as doing well at something like homework or training. Being a "knight" to his sister might have been a selfless act the first time, but he enjoyed the attention it got that it's hard to know if he protects for the sake of others or if he just wants the attention from it. When given the opportunity, Kiran will stick his nose in where it doesn't belong just to be the center of attention.

Climbing : Like any normal child, Kiran had a habit of climbing on things since the time he learned to crawl and walk. He would climb all over the furniture and stairs, and at one adventurous point, he attempted to scale a tall bookcase until his father caught him and pulled him away from the bookcase before he fell and hurt himself. Now he scales rock walls for sport as well as climbing things like trees and buildings to nap on a high up branch or on the roof. This also has, as he came to notice one day, the advantage of overhearing the conversations of passersby. Most of it is mundane in nature, but on a few occasions, he can pick up a few jewels of information.
Falcon Training : Baladeva's family has been falcon trainers for several generations. When Kiran turned eleven, Baladeva gave him his first bird to train: a red-necked falcon that Kiran named Aditi. Kiran fell in love immediately with the bird and took to training her very seriously under his father's directions. Since receiving Aditi, Kiran has worked hard to care for her and train her to hunt and scout for him. He wants to eventually teach Aditi to carry messages to other people in order to communicate quickly over long distances.
Hand Signs : When he started getting along with his sister, Kiran realized one problem: communication. He could communicate just fine with her. But Xiuying couldn't communicate as readily with him without carrying around paper and pencils to write messages. Kiran found that to be a bit tedious, having to wait for her to write out each response. So they started developing hand signals for easier communication. Once they started making up their own signals, Kiran found this method rather intriguing and enjoyed making up new signs. He liked having a secret language that only he and his sister knew. But sometimes, he will use the hand signs while talking with other people and not even realize he is signing.
Fishing : On a few trips to Uncle's home with his family, Baladeva and Uncle would drag Kiran along to go fishing at a stream that passed not too far from his home. His father claimed fishing promoted male bonding, but Kiran only found it boring at that point in time. Kiran also wanted to point out that male bonding only worked if the males actually talked to one another. He noted that Baladeva and Uncle only made dull passing comments about the weather during the long hour or so that they spent at the stream. When the children around his home wised up to his schemes, Kiran grew annoyed with the lack of attention. After a while, he recalled Uncle saying once that fishing had always helped him think. So Kiran grabbed up his old fishing pole, trekked out to the nearest stream, and cast a line. Then he sat and waited and thought. He pondered over his situation and how he might draw back the attentions of the other children. Gradually, he began to see what Uncle meant. Fishing had a somewhat calming effect and allowed him to think clearer. He started to enjoy the slow, quiet time spent fishing and would make trips out to the stream when he wanted to relax in a peaceful environment. He likes to believe that he enjoys fishing for the clearer mind, but he knows a large part has to do with feelings of loneliness brought on by being ignored. He doesn't like showing that side to people and uses fishing as a private place to let down his guard.
Training : Kiran practices the Bāguàzhǎng style of fighting. He started learning at the age of six from a distant relative, whom was a master in that style. He isn't quite sure what the proper term is for their relation since there is such a great distance between them, but he refers to the man as merely "Uncle." Uncle refused at first to teach him, but Kiran stubbornly refused to be denied and persisted in asking to be trained until Uncle finally agreed to teach him. Kiran uses tonfa for his weapon. He wanted something relatively small, light, and concealable. After testing some weapons from Uncle, he decided the tonfa were the best suited for his needs.
Boat Building : After deciding to move out of his parents' house and get a place of his own, Uncle helped Kiran a job building boats. He is still only an amateur at it, but he's quickly learning the fine craft of hand building a boat, and sometimes a large ship, but usually his boss keeps him on the smaller projects until Kiran has proven how well he has learned the trade. As the end of his time at the Academy drew near, Kiran has been thinking of building his own boat to take out to sea. Getting the job under a decent ship builder puts him one step closer to that dream.

Kiran began to act out as a way to get his parents to pay attention to him. At that point, he believed even bad attention was better than none. He was too blinded by his anger at his sister to realize that they weren't completely ignoring him. He would throw tantrums over nothing at all, merely screaming to be heard. He even became violent, throwing toys or banging against pots with spoons or knocking over tables. Xiuying looked up to her brother in the manner of younger siblings. But Kiran, unhappy to have her around, would push her over none-too-gently or pull a bit roughly on her arm. He was too young at that time to wonder why she never cried out like other children when she got hurt.
It was perhaps at that time that the first tiny inklings of his crafty nature started to develop. Kiran decided after several disciplinary punishments that perhaps acting out wasn't the best way to go about things. In fact, the punishments seemed to have the opposite effect on him. Instead of instilling good behavior in him, it seemed to encourage him to find sneakier ways of doing things that his parents considered "bad" without getting caught. He stopped throwing tantrums all the time for attention.
Kiran used the other children in his village to practice his schemes on. He often swindled money out of them by convincing them that they had some ailment that he could cure with a special medicine. Other times, he would trick them into to doing his chores for him. After a while, the other children wised up and became wary of his tricks and didn't trust his motives. He had few friends after word spread that he had been making fools of them with his swindling schemes. When they started to ignore him, he felt rather frustrated by this because of his attention seeking nature.
When he was four, Kiran was introduced to a distant family member on his mother's side. He could never understand their exact relation to one another, and the only name he was told to call the man was Uncle. At that time, he thought the man strange and eccentric and didn't much care to pay visits to Uncle's house, which was a lot closer now that he had moved to the same village. But two years later, Kiran begged Uncle to teach him the style of fighting that he often watched the man practice when he visited. His bad temper had led him to getting into many fights, and he, most if not all of the time, lost. He wanted to learn how to defend himself when he was stupid enough to let his big mouth get him into trouble. Uncle was reluctant to take on a student, even a relative, and refused. But Kiran refused to be daunted by this denial. He was as stubborn as a mule and persistently asked Uncle to teach him until the man finally gave in and agreed.
Baladeva and Daiyu had always praised what a good child Xiuying was. She had always been a nice and quiet baby, never crying throughout the night. But that started to worry them as time passed and she never made a sound. They then discovered that Xiuying was mute. Being only a little child, Kiran didn't understand why this news concerned his parents so much - after all, he didn't even know what it meant to be mute. But as he grew older, Kiran began to see why it worried his parents. It wasn't unusual for those with differences to be teased or bully. And in her case, Xiuying would never be able to call for help when it happened. Any lingering underlying anger he had felt toward his sister evaporated with this new understanding, and Kiran made a vow to himself to protect her from any bullying. His parents were happy to see Kiran and Xiuying getting along so well after that.

About : Kiran grew up idolizing his father in the way little kids do, thinking their parents can do no wrong. His father has many qualities that Kiran respects, being strong and well liked and dedicated to his family and his work. They still spend time together working on training their falcons. Baladeva is disappointed with all of Kiran's schemes and hopes it's just a phase that Kiran will eventually grow out of.

About : They have grown fairly close in recent years. Kiran tries to never do anything to upset her because he wants to make her happy. He wants to be a good big brother to her and not shatter her illusion that he's a knight in shining armor. When arguments arise between him and his parents, Xiuying is usually the one he apologizes to. He hates when she feels bad for any reason, and his protective nature wants to shield her from that.
x xXiuying is a kind and gentle girl who wishes only for peace, even if she realizes in some distant part of her that her wish is nothing more than that. She is a dreamer with great artistic ability. She is too timid to stand up for herself and has come to rely, perhaps too much, on Kiran to protect her. She has always admired Kiran for his strength, something in which she is greatly lacking. When she was still a toddler, it was discovered that Xiuying was mute. She never made a sound during her infant stage, but her parents believed that she was only a quiet baby and never realized that anything was wrong with her. But when it came around the time when she should be developing her speech, she remained silent. Growing up mute, she had a lot of difficulty communicating with others and often became the object of teasing and bullying.

About : He is an elderly man related to Kiran on his mother's side, though the exact relationship isn't quite clear. Everyone has always referred to him simply as Uncle, so Kiran has never learned the man's true name (or really bothered to ask about it). On first meeting, Kiran wasn't all that interested in getting to know the man, but over time, Uncle became his mentor and began training him to fight. When it comes to fighting with his mother, Kiran often seeks refuge at Uncle's home. He finds it easier to discuss things with Uncle, because while they might not always share the same opinion, Uncle tends to simply listen and express his own opinion on the matter rather than starting up some kind of shouting match.

Reasoning : Kiran idolized his father as a little child, so when his father chose to side with the Nobles, it was only natural for Kiran to follow in his father's thinking. But his stance became firmer as he grew up and encountered those on the Legion side. He dislikes their snobby, stuck up attitudes and the way they look down on the Nobles. He doesn't understand why they support the Emperor who keeps them from learning more about the world beyond the veil. What secrets are they trying to keep? He believes that if they don't learn about the outside world, their culture might become stagnant and victim of decline.

Later they met again when Kiran was practicing his seal form magic. It backfired on him, and Xiu used his water healing magic to heal Kiran's burns.

archery. Later Kiran returns to Jianyu's family's tattoo shop and Jianyu does his tattoo for him.
