Sitting in her history class, Mayu was almost relieved to hear the bell out in the courtyard peal. School was out! Usually she could sit through these mundane classes that would never really amount to anything once she graduated and hit the battlefield running, but today was different. Today was SHOPPING. For the past month, when her father announced that she would be given a purse to spend to her heart’s desire, she had waited for this. She was going to be able to let loose, barter, and get the different things that she had been wanting to purchase. Unlike most girls, Mayu didn’t spend her money on frivolous things like make-up and jewelry. She was content with what had been given to her genetically, and only wore one or two pieces of jewelry – and those themselves were more or less mementos from special times or favorite people. Other then purchasing one or two kimonos or obis while out shopping, her attention was more focused on obtaining knickknacks and searching for obscure shops that housed some of the most interesting trinkets. Not to mention the armories with their fascinating array of weapons. Just thinking about it had her fit to burst with excitement.
Sprinting out of the class room, into the hallway, out through the courtyard, and into the street, Mayu inhaled deeply. Free! Setting out down the street on her way to Main, where she planned on starting this amazing journey of spending, Mayu searched for her favorite boutique that made the most amazing outfits. Spotting it, she walked a little faster – she needed to get there before the rush started and all the good linens were snapped up!
Walking in to the tinkling of a bell attached to the top of the door, Mayu waved to the owner - who she had become quite familiar with due to past excursions like today, and hit the piles of clothes laid out on tables around the room, eyeing the different colors and styles. It seemed they had had a new shipment in since last she was here - this was definitely going to be a good day. Diving in to heaven, Mayu set out to find something that fit her fancy.

Battle Ethics had to be the most useless class in the history of academia. If you're about to die, shouldn't you take every opportunity to defend yourself, even if it means stabbing the enemy in the back? Getting him while he's down? Not only did she disagree with the idea of the class itself, but the jerk who sat in front of her seemed to love stinking up the entire room, and flexing randomly in the middle of class. The girl had a throbbing headache at this point, so there was only one way to fix it.
Retail Therapy.
It wasn't as if Van didn't have enough ao dai and makeup and accessories already. She just knew that she wanted more of it. If her father complained that she was spending too much money on clothing alone, she could always tell him that he wanted her to be a lady, so this was how her femininity was going to be made manifest. This thought alone was enough to infuriate Van, however—she hated that her father disdained her desire to become a warrior, but that was another story for another day.
As she stepped out of the bounds of the academy, she knew exactly which boutique she was going to head for. It was one of the newer ones on the edge of town, that few knew about and always had beautiful things stocked. Each item was a steal. Lipsticked lips curved up slightly at the thought of bringing home one—or four—of those reputable beauties, and Van quickened her pace. She couldn't be reunited with new clothes too soon, after all.
Tossing a quick greeting to the store owner, who had come to know her by name, Van made a beeline for the qipao rack. Time to find something good.

GREATEST. DAY. EVER.
Excitement boiling, Mayu was in ecstasy. Moving through the stacks, racks, and tables of clothes she was like a fat kid who had been given a free pass to an all-you-eat dessert bar, and she had yet to get her fill. Trekking through the neat piles of clothes, leaving a tumultuous path of crazed sorting behind her, she made a mental note to not haggle as much for that perfect article of clothing she eventually would find. While she loved to get the cheapest price possible, she was a caring person. There was no need to leave the owner with an chaotic mess and not as big of a comission as could have been obtained. Heck. She might even pay full price for the garments to show her gratitude and appreciation.
The next rack over, packed full of qipao, seemed to be calling to her tauntingly. The dress, with its high collar and multitude of designs, had always appealed to her; though she tended to enjoy the ones that didn’t have as many colors and design’s going on, natural splendor, after all, is the best beauty. Plus, in Mayus experience, it gave males too much of an excuse to stare at her breasts and hips. “Oh, I’m looking at the patterns on your clothes. They’re really quite well done.” What a crack pot excuse. Please. She had better things to do then deal with hormone driven dogs – unless it fit her fancy that is.
Walking over, Mayu took note of the other patron already there perusing the wares. From behind, it could be seen that the girl had a certain style to her. Her clothes hugged her lean, muscled body and there was a certain spunk to the way she held herself, not to mention the mass of hair she kept in a ponytail off to the side of her head. She liked this girl’s style. Joining her, Mayu gazed upon her face, noting her massive use of make-up, but otherwise beautiful appearance. Well...it never hurt to meet new people.
"Uh. Hi. Come here often?” Crap. Social awkwardness struck again. She sounded like some guy with a lame pick-up line.

Van went about her business in a more nonchalant manner, as if she did this every day (though that wasn't too far from the truth). Picking through the qipao one by one with carefully manicured fingers, Van found that each and every one was perfectly respectable—the problem would be choosing only a few to bring home. As much as she would have loved to buy out the whole store, she didn't have quite the manpower to lug all that money and clothes to and from town every day. Not to mention, her mother would have an aneurysm, before beating her daughter with a giant pan or somesuch thing. Yes, Thu Nguyet was that beastly. The thought terrified Van—better to come home with a modest amount of new clothes every day than to bring it home all at once and risk her parents' wrath.
Fingering the silks carefully, Van managed to select a few garments to try on. No more than an armful, of course, in order to cut down on fitting room time and to stay on the good side of the owner. The girl preferred the elaborate brocaded gowns to the simpler ones, unlike some. The coming of spring and summer meant shorter sleeves, and shorter dresses. Therefore, the designs had to be even more catchy to make up for the loss of fabric, right? Stares and wolf whistles never fazed this Lunarian—try as they might, Van had already resolved that no one would come even close to her that way. Might as well let them enjoy what they can't have, then, while suffering in the knowledge that she'd never give them the time of day.
A girl's voice cut into her thoughts right about then, startling her out of her inner musings. Had she based her judgment on the contents of the words alone, Van might have guessed that she had been approached by a boy. However, no sane man would step into this particular store. Turning around with lowered eyes, she peered slowly up to meet the sparkling blue eyes of a girl who seemed to be about her age—this was her version of a once-over. She was adequately pleased by the other girl's well-kept appearance, though, and decided to grace her words with a response.
"All the time," she replied smoothly with a curt nod. Then, smiling in a more relaxed fashion, she continued, "This place is the best. Why wouldn't you come here every day? I'm Van, by the way."
That had been as much for the other girl as for the shopowner to hear. One couldn't flatter such a person too much.

”Haha. It is that, for sure. It’s one of my favorite shops to come to when I’m in the mood to buy clothes. And hello Van, I’m Mayu, pleased to meet your acquaintance.”
Distracted by a particular qipao, her attention was momentarily diverted as she fingered the material. Too thick for this kind of weather, it seemed. If it was later in the season, she might consider buying it but not right now; she had more important things to purchase. She might come back later though. It’s usually easier to bargain for cheaper prices when outfits are out of season.
The decision took a fleeting second in Mayu’s mind. Drawing her eyes back up from the dress, she returned to her deduction of Van. The girl really did have a nice style about her. Everything was so well put together. While the designs weren’t exactly her cup of tea, it worked for this girl. Though if she could, she would strip her of them and throw her into a dress of a more mellow fashion, maybe something with a mixture of purple and blue, and wash her of all that make-up. Then she’d be able to see her for who she really was. And Mayu bet that under that thick layering of make-up, was someone so naturally beautiful it would be breath taking. Sighing, and hoping the girl wouldn’t have noticed her analytical gaze, she continued on with their conversation.
”So do I know you from somewhere? You seem to have something about you that I recognize. But I can’t remember what exactly. Do you attend the Academy?”

Van had been too distracted to notice that Mayu was still giving her a once (twice?)-over. She had instead been occupying herself by comparing how dress upon dress might look on her body by holding them up her body in the mirror. Really, the girl didn't care whether others were checking her out—if they liked what they saw, they were free to come approach her. If not, well, it was their loss, not hers. As for Mayu, Van had done pretty much the exact same thing, so it was not offending in the least.
"Likewise," she had answered, sparing the other girl but one word and one small nod of acknowledgment. It wasn't that Van was necessarily cold on first meeting; she was simply not given to speaking overmuch. In her eyes, she was being as friendly as acquaintances got. More could be inferred by her rather agreeable posture right now, than by what she said to Mayu.
Heavily made up eyes flicked upward once again at Mayu's next words, which were significantly more interesting than the formalities that had preceded them. However, Van's attention was split yet again by a beautiful purple gown with deep blue accents. Purple was definitely her color, but she could easily begin to grow on those blues. "I've only been in the Academy for a few months," she said, half absent from the conversation, though she idly wondered about Mayu's identity. If this was a girl she was supposed to know, Van had had no idea. "Just transferred."
Holding the purple and blue dress up to herself, Van flashed the other girl a more gracious smile. "Hey, what do you think of this one?"

Smiling, Mayu was happy her slip-up earlier in the conversation hadn’t damaged further reciprocations between them. And she was a fellow Academy student as well! That would explain the subtle muscles that were a part of Van’s overall physique.
Van seemed to be very drawn in by her own image in the mirror, as she cycled between the different dresses she liked. It was almost to the point of being vain, but something about the way she did things kept her from pulling that conclusion on the girl. Stunned, Mayu watched as Van pulled out a dress in the exact color combination that she had moments ago envisioned her in.
”You’ll like it at the Academy. Some of the classes are completely useless in the long run, but overall the school itself is amazing. And that’s incredibly beautiful. I think it would look amazing on you – you should go try it on.”
That dress really did look amazing when held up to Van’s ample frame. Seeing it, she remembered what it was that she was supposed to be doing at that moment – how could she have been distracted like that? Diving back into the piles and racks of clothes, she resumed her search for a clothing item of her own.

A soft chuckle sounded in Van's throat at the other girl's response. Perhaps she liked this Mayu after all. "Ah, well, I'm glad you think so. I will go do just that!" she chirped, very pleased that another agreed with her opinion. With that, Van turned to enter one of the small fitting rooms. With just one dress to try on, one that she thought she liked very much, it was probably going to be a quick decision. Nevertheless, it didn't hurt to try it on and perhaps admire herself in the mirror.
Unbuttoning her rather daring rendition of an ao dai, the Lunarian lay her garment to the side in favor of the new qipao. Who cared about staying true to her nationality when such a beauty like this was calling her name? It wasn't as if Van did not have Chinese roots in the first place, though. Both qipao and ao dai worked well enough as far as Van's mixed Vietnamese and Chinese ancestry. If anything, her parents should be quite proud that their daughter had decided to embrace her roots.
At least, that was Van's planned justification for buying new clothes this time around. Holding the blue and purple dress up to the light in admiration, the girl was quickly disappointed by the fact that there was a small tear in one of its seams. "Oh, too bad," were her solemn words. How promising it had been up until this moment! Still, this girl would not settle for anything less than perfect.
Shrugging back into her own clothes once again, she left the fitting room, discarded dress left behind. She'd find another—it wouldn't be too hard.

Mmm. The girl had a nice laugh...or was it more of a chuckle? It didn't really matter. Smiling at the girls enthusiasm, Mayu nodded her head at Van as she went into the dressing room to try on the qipao. She seemed like a pleasant girl. Maybe she was just one that needed a little extra work to crack and get to open up. Shrugging her shoulders, Mayu walked to a new section to peruse the wares further. There really were so many things to choose from and see. How was she to choose?
Hearing the dressing room curtain slid back, Mayu glanced up to see Van exiting the area with an expression of bland distate on her face. ”Everything alright? Did the dress not f-"”
Breaking off in mid sentence, Mayu noticed a dress just over Van's shoulder. A black Uchikake, a formal-style kimono, with blue undertones that gave it a quite striking appearance was calling her over to it. It was amazing. The tones matched her hair and eyes perfectly - and it would cause such a contrast to her skin, giving her an increase to it's warmth. It was perfect! It seemed that it would offer a perfect, tight fit as well - it even had a semi-short cut to the length! Not to mention that its pattern increased the garments beauty itself, moreso then it would detract from the overall beauty of the wearer. This was it - that was the dress she was going to get. Walking over, Mayu stroked the fabric between her fingers, feeling the silkiness of it's texture. It was amazing. This dress did more then sing to her - it directed a whole orchestra at her ears!

It hadn't taken very long for Van to forget about her failed qipao conquest and find another suitable garment. While the girl wasn't typically easy to please, this shoppe was one of the few places that would satisfy even the most high-maintenance of girls. Van was no exception to this, and normally, she would have been inclined to answer Mayu's polite inquiry, had it not been drowned out by the sudden heavenly sound in her head at the sight of a glorious black uchikake.
Chinese qipao, Vietnamese ao dai—suddenly it didn't matter anymore. While the garment was culturally foreign to Van, she could tell immediately that it was the one. There was nothing wrong with expanding one's horizons as far as fashion! Mentally excusing her dismissal of the rest of the store—everything else was still lovely, promise!—the Lunarian made a beeline for the uchikake. Something clicked in the back of her mind; there was no disputing that she would be going home with this dress at any cost.
Van was only momentarily fazed as another girl suddenly cut in front of her, beating her to the dress. It was also of little consequence that this other Lunarian was Mayu, the girl with whom she had just been exchanging friendly formalities. Mayu was pleasant enough—she'd understand why Van had to have this dress, wouldn't she?
"Ah," Van began, as she caught up and took hold of the dark silken fabric. "I... saw this first." The smile she gave Mayu was small and pleasant, but even so, there was a bit of a protective edge to the stance she held over the dress. No one was getting in the way of this purchase.

Oh, the sweet sensations this dress sent through her. It was glorious. Feeling a presence to her side, she glanced up as another hand entered her field of vision and tugged on the dress. Surprised to see Van as the perpetrator to this heinous offense, Mayu listened to what the girl had to say curiously. Hearing her dictation, Mayu could fell the frustration build up in her breast. Straightening up, she brought herself to her full height and almost seemed to puff up in indignation.
”I’m sorry. I’m sure you are in the same situation as me, seeing this dress in all of its beauty, but there is no way you saw it before me. Your back was to it, if I remember correctly, and I did reach it before you. If you excuse me, this dress is for me.”
Running her eyes up and down Van’s frame, Mayu huffed at her for trying to remove this amazing garment from her. She would fight her without hesitation over it. Even the thought of it had her fingers itching to dive into her obi for the ever-present fan.

Perhaps this Mayu wasn't as reasonable as she'd previously thought. Van's violet eyes narrowed, gleaming in the face of the challenge. Their eyes were nearly level with each other—Mayu had but an inch on Van, but such a thing as height never fazed the girl. She'd managed to bring Bataar to his knees, hadn't she? And it certainly went without saying that pleasantries, at this point, had gone out the window. Van laughed again, but this time, the sound struck a false chord, jarring the air in her insincerity. The Lunarian wasn't sure what irked her more: that Mayu was blatantly lying, or that she was still trying to get in the way of the dress. Both, perhaps?
Van didn't need to say anything, of course—her actions always said so much more. Nudging the other's hands away from the dress, Van pulled the garment off the rack, holding it to her bosom. Turning around in the direction of the cash register, she spared the girl an apologetic glance. "Don't be sorry," she cooed, an obnoxiously sugary sound, "You did the right thing."
At least now, Mayu would know not to get in the way of what Van wanted.

The air had gone cold. Or so it seemed. Mayu’s fingers twitched as she stared at the large expanse of air that was now nonexistent of that beautiful dress. Hearing the girls laughter and sickly sweet voice made her blanch at the audaciousness that Van possessed to just remove the dress like that, with no warning – she had thought the girl was much more pleasant than this. This girl obviously has no sense of respect and cordiality! She would be sure to teach her them momentarily, after a brief lapse of her own.
”Listen here you…ignorant blob of purple spit-up! That dress is not made for your lacking frame. And your manners show that you are not ready for a dress made in such an elegant style meant for people with an appropriate fashion sense. Something else you obviously lack, what with that overuse of make-up and hair product.”
Finishing her sizeable montage at Van’s misconduct, Mayu marched over to her. Grabbing the dress, she turned away from the ignorant female, making sure her hair would fwap Van in the face as she spun and made her way to the counter to purchase the dress for herself.

Van merely continued walking with the dress as the other girl sputtered in anger. It was so funny what people said once consumed in rage, wasn't it? The Lunarian allowed herself a small giggle as she listened to Mayu's obviously ungrounded insults to her. It would definitely take more than that to bring someone like Van down. "Hey now, A-cup," she quipped, a light tinkle of a laugh preceding these words, "If I can't wear it, there's no way it'd look good on a flat-chested brown wretch like you." And it was true, of course—how could it not be, if Van said it was true? Van's figure was already well on its way to completion, having just turned the lovely age of eighteen.
In mocking Mayu, however, Van was ill-prepared for the other girl's assault on the dress. Suddenly finding herself without the garment, and seeing it instead in Mayu's grubby hands as she continued to the counter, Van decided that she would not let that stupid Noble get so far. No one got in the way of Van's conquests without suffering dire consequences.
Dropping to the ground and using one well-toned arm for support, Van swung one long leg out to catch the other girl's ankle, and hopefully topple her to the ground.
Dress in hand, Van flipped her curly ponytail in a practiced motion. Look who had the upper hand now!
