This is a PRP between Zan (Corsair Vitari) and Van (Kurama no Koishi).

Setting:
Van encounters a snake in the middle of her private training session, but soon realizes that the slithering creatures aren't the only things accompanying her today.

Van’s breath came in labored gasps as she returned to a defensive stance, both swords at the ready. The captain had just come out of a more complicated series of leopard forms, and this on top of her newly healing shoulder injury had been particularly taxing. Finally, after a few moments of steady silence, Van placed her hands together and bowed to her invisible opponent in reconciliation. In her mind, this opponent was another rendition of herself, her shadow, one could call it. Fitting it was, since every day the Legionnaire fought to surpass who she was the previous day.

Today, it had taken three hours, and by this point she was more than ready to go home, clean up, and get a good night’s sleep. Goddess knew how much she needed that, these days. The woman worked daytime hours in the palace offices, analyzing intelligence retrieved from the Nobles, and by night she was out infiltrating Noble safehouses for such loot and intel. Van had been excused from the night’s military duties, though, her post having been temporarily taken up by another captain. She could be like the captains on the front lines, for once, sleeping at the same time the rest of the world slept. Smiling at the thought as she bent down to grab her bottle of water, Van could only cherish the moment she had to herself.

At that exact moment, a rustling in the grass behind her demanded her attention (it was never wise to ignore such sounds, especially when one was supposed to be alone), and the captain turned only for her violet gaze to meet air. Looking up and then down, she quickly found the source of the rustling sound and yelped loudly, losing her serious composure for a moment when she jumped about two feet into the air.

Reflexes served her well, however, for Van flung one of her black steeled swords upon her descent, the sharp blade severing the ominously patterned snake cleanly in two. Shuddering slightly at the mess of snake blood and guts as she leaned over to pick up her sword, another rustling sound—much larger this time—caused her to whirl around, weapon raised.

“Who’s there?” The demand rang with an unspoken sense of authority. If it was a snake, the captain had probably overdone it.

Usually classes occupied Zan's otherwise restless mind, allowing him to divert his abundance of energy to more productive activities. However since there were no classes that day it left him feeling restless and agitated, resulting in him bickering with his mother before escaping his home yet again; he simply didn't understand why she wanted him to meditate when there was so much out in the world to do!

Thus Zan had opted to wander outside the city for a change, humming to himself and climbing over fallen trees, ducking beneath vines, and generally enjoying the feel of just... Wandering. Normally he would probably be climbing the trees and looking for anything unusual like an animal he hadn't seen before or strange plants, but he was more happy with the movement and fresh air than anything else. Perhaps he had burned up most of his energy in the ridiculous argument with his mother so there wasn't much left to burn off. No matter the case, Zan felt happy and good, his hands trailing over the bark of a nearby tree.

That was when a yelp, very obviously one that didn't come from any form of animal, startled him, causing him to slip and windmill, trying to maintain his balance only to pitch forward off the log he'd been standing on. With a gasp he managed to turn it into a roll, though that roll landed him into a push with more than a little rustling. With a grimace he shifted a little, aiming to get back onto his feet and investigate the sound he'd heard (Someone could be in trouble after all!) but he froze when a voice came from beyond the bush.

Well, she didn't exactly sound very happy. No, in fact, she sounded like she was prepared to to attack him if he emerged from his current hiding place, thus he mulled over his options. Finally he lifted an arm straight up into the air, out of the bush and waved his hand back and forth, hopefully indicating that he was, well, unarmed and really didn't want to cause any trouble.

"Um... Hello." he finally offered, slowly lifting his head to peer over the push, offering a sheepish smile. "I don't... Uh... Want any trouble, really! I was just... Wandering and I heard you and thought you were hurt but you scared me and I fell and tumbled and rolled into this bush and... Wow that doesn't sound very graceful does it? Just... Don't attack me or anything, please?"

Van really didn’t like snakes. In fact, they were probably the only creature she didn’t handle well, even after all the years she’d spent living in Lunaria’s rainforests. She might have overreacted to the first sighting, and perhaps even more so at the second noise, but it was all to look after herself. She’d been attacked by wild creature and Lunarian alike while her back was turned often enough to warrant a certain measure of paranoia. It didn’t make her look very good when it turned out to be something like a bunny, though, or in this case a boy.

Her sword was still leveled at him when an arm, and then a head emerged from the brush, and Van blinked once, waiting as he rambled on for a few moments. Deciding then that he posed no threat to her well-being at present (he was much too talkative for that), she finally lowered her weapon. “I’m fine. It was just a snake.” The captain pointed the tip of her sword to the severed reptile just next to her as she said this, shrugging the idea that she’d ever been startled or in danger off. Her, hurt? Psh.

Bending over now to wipe off the remaining snake guts from her sword with a cloth she’d fished from her pack, she spared the boy in the bush another glance, one that was more curious this time. He seemed fairly young, from what she could tell, probably of student age. If nothing else, he was certainly not a fighter—the sergeants she knew would probably have slapped the speech out of him by this point. She chuckled slightly to herself at this thought.

Sheathing her weapon in a silent reply to the blonde boy, she finally smiled, a catlike expression more than anything else. Moving her things off to the side and away from the dead snake, the captain turned to approach the student, bending neatly at the waist so that she was almost eye to eye with him. “It’s okay. You can move now, if you want.” Van extended one gloved hand out, offering to help him up. She sounded reassuring enough, didn’t she? The captain didn’t bite, at least not until she had a reason to. “What are you doing out here, anyway?”

Zan's eyes followed the line of the woman's sword, peering over the bush that he was still tangled in, only to make a face of mild alarm of the state of the snake. He was, honestly, rather thankful that she hadn't decided that he was a threat and made him into a pin cushion just yet and he hoped it stayed that way. He bit his lip in uncertainty when she bent over to clean her sword, blushing a little and quickly averting his eyes when they strayed to the strange woman's, well, backside.

"O-oh! W-well I'm glad that you're okay... Not that... You can't handle yourself! I'm sure you can, definitely." Zan rambled, hesitantly glancing back at the dark haired woman. "Just... Glad you weren't... In actual trouble I guess."

When she turned to him Zan's eyes widened and he swallowed, leaning back a little before freezing, not sure what else he should do. Normally he didn't get into squabbles or fights with women, something he blamed on his fondness for his mother, and he hoped that it stayed that way. However that didn't stop the rather undignified squeak of surprise from passing his lips, which only caused him to flush anew, feeling rather foolish. Blinking he glanced down at her hand, then back at her, giving her a sheepish smile and letting out a nervous laugh as he accepted the assistance, climbing to his feet.

"O-oh. Thanks. Um, sorry, I normally don't really meet anyone when I wander out this way..." Zan murmured, brushing a few leaves and tiny thorns off his clothing and arms; he seemed unharmed. "I... Um... Well I like to wander around and explore things and I hadn't been out this way in a while so I thought I'd finally come back for a bit. Normally I don't run into beautiful women and snakes and... Erm... Sorry. You are pretty but I mean... I don't want to be all... Forward and..."

Zan's words finally halted and he looked a tad embarrassed and more than a little frustrated by his lack of any form of vocal filter. He lifted his hands, scrubbing his face with them, taking a deep breath, then letting them fall to his sides again. Finally he held out his hand to the woman before him, still looking sheepish but, at least, no longer rambling or making a fool out of himself.

"Sorry... Can I start over? My name's Zan..."

Van was thankful for the fact that her warrior training enabled her to hide the majority of her emotions. Otherwise, she was sure that her eyebrows would have risen higher and higher with every one of Zan’s words, probably disappearing into her hairline by the time he finished speaking. His loquacious manner was, well, impressive. The captain was accustomed to long silences in the company of others, usually since the wear and tear of battle tended to beat any conversation out of her men. Around her juniors, even the normally reticent captain felt the urge to start conversation. The special teams were a quiet bunch.

So when this babbling boy came out of the bushes behind her, Van couldn’t help but feel amused, if not a bit startled. She tried a few times to get a word in here and there, to assure him that it really was quite alright and that she probably wasn’t going to hurt him or anything like that. He didn’t exactly leave her an opening, though, and the Legionnaire was forced to simply wait until he stopped.

When he did, she allowed herself a smile, one that was almost impish in nature. “You’re cute,” she stated, even as he began to rub at his face in an emotion that looked like embarrassment. She really did think so—talkative kids were a nice change from the stiff company she otherwise kept. Not missing a step in the flow of their conversation, she took his hand and gave it a firm shake when it was offered, putting another sideways smile on her face. “Don’t worry about it. I’m Captain Au, but you can just call me Van, if you like.”

She wasn’t usually so friendly to absolute strangers, but it was pretty clear that Zan wasn’t out to put a knife in her back or anything of the sort.
