This is a private roleplay between Kiran [Kazu-chan] and Enlei [danse-hexe].

Setting :
The Academy
Adventures already, on the first day of school?
PostPosted: Wed Nov 24, 2010 10:26 pm

If there were ever a moment Enlei wished she had thought to check out the academy grounds before her first official day there, it was now.

Every section of the school looked the same. Exactly the same. And the school was huge. Though she had a feeling she'd been walking around in circles for a while now, she couldn't be sure- there were no distinctive landmarks around. To make matters worse, there wasn't a map- not that she could have read it anyway, but still!

Tomorrow, the girl thought, she had better bring some string to school with her, to leave a trail so she'd know where she'd been.

For now, though, Enlei contented herself with sitting by the edge of one of the many ponds, and staring at the nearest building. In a few minutes, she assumed people would be leaving their classrooms for the next lesson... and perhaps she could follow them around.. or something.

What an auspicious start to the first day of school.

Kiran stretched as he left class with the rest of his fellow students. Studying for tests always stressed him out and antsy. It was nice to have the test out of the way now, but the anxiousness of waiting for the results started to sink in. He couldn't be certain how well he had done on the test. He thought he had studied well for it, but he had struggled with a lot of the answers.

Now he needed to find a way to relax and take his mind off the test. Stressing out over the result wouldn't help anything. It wouldn't change how well he did on the test.

Kiran glanced around at all the students bustling around after class. Some loitered around taking their time and chattering excitedly to each other while others kept quiet and hurried onto their next location. But Kiran's attention caught on a girl with light blue hair sitting near a pond. From the distance, he couldn't be sure but he thought she looked somewhat familiar.

He turned in her direction and headed over to where she sat. As he approached, he realized why she looked so familiar from the distance. "Enlei!" he called out with a smile on his face. Then he wondered if she would remember him from the Festival of Spirits.

There it was: the pitter-patter of footsteps, of people leaving their classes. Now was her chance! She looked around, hoping to find a victim to accost and bully into showing her to her classroom, but just as her gaze fell on a small, scrawny kid, she heard someone call her name.

It was that boy from the Festival of Spirits- the one who'd helped her find Ruishan, and this time, this time she wouldn't make the same mistake. Her face grew hot as she remembered, and she shook her head slightly, trying to get the memory out of her mind.

"Kiran!" She waved at him, smiling, then stood up and dusted herself off. He seemed slightly disgruntled- had something happened in class? She opened her mouth to ask, but thought it better not to pry, and instead managed a lame "Fancy seeing you here!"

At any rate, he for one looked as if he were well-enough acquainted with the school grounds. She hoped she wasn't letting her uncertainty show- it would not do for him to know she was lost, what would he think of her? Losing her brother, now losing her way- how awfully careless. Again she brushed away the thought, and took a step towards him, choosing a nice, flat rock to stand on by the side of the pond.

"Headed to your next class, then?" Unconsciously she was playing with her hair, twirling the ends of her braid. "Or are you going home, already?"

"You remembered my name," Kiran said jokingly with a wide smile. He wasn't sure if she would remember him from their encounters during the Festival of Spirits. But he wouldn't have been able to complain if she had forgotten his name. He wasn't the best at remembering names, especially after only brief encounters, like he had messed up on Sakn's name the next time they met.

"Fancy indeed," he agreed, still grinning. "You never mentioned that you attended the academy when we met." It wasn't a topic that had ever come up between them though. He hadn't said anything either. But he couldn't remember seeing her around the academy until today.

Kiran rolled his shoulder in a shrugging motion. "I'm free for the moment," he answered, which felt like a relief after struggling through that test in his last class. "I don't have my last class until later. What about you? Heading off to your next class, or do you have free time now too?"

"Of course I did," she winked at him. "After everything that happened, there's no way I'd be able to forget you!" Laughing softly, Enlei stepped lightly on the stones by the side of the pond, trying to keep her balance as she walked towards him.

"Today's my first day at the academy, actually! I'd just received the letter of acceptance on the first day of the Festival." Enlei beamed up at him, looking somewhat proud of herself. "I've always dreamed of coming here, since I was a little girl."

"You?" She tilted her head slightly, looking up at him. "Are you fighting for something, too?" Somehow she felt as if that were a dangerous question. What if he were a Legion? She did not know what she would do, if so; she wasn't sure she wanted to hear his answer.

Enlei brushed her own question aside with a laugh- hopefully it didn't sound too.. fake. "I'm free right now as well, actually, though I do have a class in about an hour or so." She looks up at him expectantly, a gleam in her eye.

"What should we do now, then? Is there any fun stuff around this place?"

Kiran's chest puffed out in pride at being remembered. He could never be certain that he would leave an impression on a person after a brief encounter, so it helped boost his ego when someone remembered him at a later meeting. "Well, you know," he said, shrugging it off with a roll of one shoulder like it wasn't that big of a deal. "What kind of man would I be if I didn't help out someone in need?" He probably would have been in a similar state of distress if he had lost Xiuying during the Festival.

"You should have said something," he said with a chuckle. Kiran nodded as he gazed out over the lake. "My sister really hates that I fight though."

"Fun stuff, hm?" Kiran pondered as he tapped his chin. When it came to schooling, he really didn't think of many things being "fun." He did his best and worked hard to keep up his grades, but that really wasn't anything that fell into his idea of what qualified as fun. "We could always do some exploring," he suggested as he turned back to Enlei and grinned. Outside of classes, he really hadn't done much in the way of exploring the academy. There was bound to be a number of areas that he hadn't even visited yet.

Enlei couldn't help but giggle a little at Kiran's response- at the way he was puffing out his chest. "Well, you're definitely a very manly man," she laughed. "Such a brave hero, a defender of the helpless!"

Not that she had been helpless, of course. Of course.

"There wasn't really a chance to talk properly during the festival," she laughed, "with everything that was going on." Enlei followed his gaze over the lake, watched the colourful koi swimming. What did Kiran fight for, then? To protect his family, too, and the ones he loved?

"I like your sister." Enlei declared, turning back to look straight at Kiran. "She seems so gentle and kind." Not at all like herself- though she didn't share this thought with him. "I suppose.. she doesn't want you to get hurt. I'd never want to see Ruishan injured, too. But that's why I'm fighting this war- so that it will end, and no one will have to suffer again."

Awkwardly, Enlei shuffled her feet. Somehow she'd sounded more serious than she'd meant to.

"Exploring- that sounds good! It's my first day, anyway- probably a good idea to get acquainted with the school grounds." He was grinning at her, and she couldn't help but smile, as well.

"Lead the way?"

"Why thank you," Kiran said with a wide smile as he made a half bow at Enlei. "I do try so hard at it." Though whether he did so because he wanted to or simply because he liked the attention, no one could ever really tell for sure. It was possible, of course, that it was a little of both.

"It was pretty busy," Kiran agreed, thinking back on the Festival. He smiled. "I'm sure she'll be glad to hear that." He nodded, his smile falling a fraction. "I know. It's the same with my mother. But they don't understand that I just can't sit back. You know? I have things to fight for, people I want to protect." He doubted he could ever make his mother understand. She was dead set against him joining the battles of the war. His sister was just concerned that one day he might not return from a fight. And that was just another reason for him to train and become stronger.

"Then let's go!" Kiran turned back toward the buildings of the academy.

"You certainly have," Enlei grinned. "How about you tell me more about your brave escapades, while we're exploring?" Walking with him set her at ease, somehow; it was easy to be cheerful with someone who seemed so cheerful, himself.

He did seem, however, distinctly less cheerful when he mentioned his mother. Things to fight for, huh? And people to protect. She liked that, though. At least he wasn't a brute who'd take any fight he could get.

"Parents," she said wryly. "My mother wanted me to wait a few years before enrolling into the academy! In the end, though, my father managed to convince her it was good for me. In this day and age, you can't rely on anyone- the war's everywhere. Gotta learn how to protect yourself, and.. the ones you love."

Even as she said them, she knew they were empty words. She'd led such a peaceful, sheltered life- the only times she had come into contact with the war in any way were through Papa's stories.

Shaking the thought aside, she moved so she was walking right beside him. "Where to, brave hero? I'm counting on you to show me the way."

"So many tales to tell. I wonder if I'll have enough time to tell them all," Kiran said jokingly. In reality, he didn't think he had many "brave escapades" to talk about. He couldn't even really think of the last so-called "heroic" act that he did.

"My mother probably would have been happier if I didn't enroll in the academy," Kiran admitted as he opened and held the door for Enlei. "She agrees with my father's point of view, but I think that's mostly just out of family loyalty. She doesn't understand why either side is continuing this war." He shrugged. Maybe the war had escalated out of control. When he thought back on his fights against the Legions, they were mostly petty fights started out of bad moods, misunderstandings, or just the fact that the other person was a Legionaire.

But was he really expected to sit back idly when one of those Legionaires bullied his sister? Perhaps some of those feelings were just out of guilt. Kiran shook the thought from his head. He didn't want to dwell on those kind of thoughts around other people. He threw on a bright smile as he glanced at Enlei.

"Where to, indeed," Kiran agreed. They were approaching a corridor that crossed the one that they were currently wandering down. "Which way shall we go?" He pointed to each in turn as he recited a little poem in his head. When he reached the end of the poem, his finger pointed toward the corridor to their right. "Right it is!"
PostPosted: Thu Jan 06, 2011 9:13 pm

"Well, we've got plenty of time- haven't we?" Enlei teased him, though she could sense his reluctance, and promptly dropped the subject.

"To be honest, I don't understand, either." She twirled a strand of hair again- bad habit. Was that sort of answer surprising.. for a fighter? "I mean- I'm a Noble." Enlei looked at him pointedly, daring him to say he was a Legionnaire. If he was one, anyway. She found herself crossing her fingers behind her back- she didn't know what she'd do if he were one.

"But I don't fight because I'm against the Legions. I'm fighting because they're against each other." She paused, watched him again. "Do you.. get it? I'm not so good with words." She bit her lip, trying to think of how to put it.

"I'm fighting the war because there's a war, and I want to stop it. I don't have anything personal against the Legion, or what they believe in. I fight because as Legions, they're against us."

And I will fight you too, Kiran, she thought, if it comes to it.

If I can.

"You don't think I'm crazy, do you? Fighting a war.. to stop people from fighting? I don't know what else there is to do," she admitted. "I don't know how either side will ever win."

For now, as he was smiling at her, she supposed things were okay. Enlei watched as he decided which corridor to take- she'd done the very same thing when she was a child, wandering around their house. She still used poems to pick answers, at times- as long as you sounded convinced, it was pretty easy to convince other people, no matter what you were saying.

With a chuckle she followed him. "Right it is then." They'd reached a row of classrooms- big, white and shiny. "D'you think," Enlei asked, pointing at one of the doors, "We could go see what they're like inside?"

He supposed they did, but he couldn't really think of any heroic tales to tell.

Kiran nodded at her comment. There were probably quite a few things about the war that he didn't understand either, not that he would ever admit to that. He knew what he believed, and he was fighting for that and to protect the people he cared about. But what of the Legions? He didn't really understand their side of this war. Even after his talk with Jianyu, Kiran still didn't understand why they supported the Emperor.

A smile spread onto his face. "I'm a Noble too," Kiran said proudly. At least, he wouldn't have to worry about their alliances coming between them.

Kiran lifted an eyebrow as he listened to her explanation, trying to follow it. "What made you choose the Noble side instead of the Legion side then?" It seemed like a reasonable question. If she just wanted to stop the war, Enlei could have easily chosen to join the Legion instead of the Noble. Then they would be on opposing sides and may have ended up having to fight. He was glad that wasn't the case.

Kiran shrugged. "I don't see why not." He wasn't familiar with this particular area of the academy. He hadn't come down this corridor before and didn't recognize the rooms, but they looked like they weren't in use at the moment. "Shall we?" He opened one of the doors for Enlei.
