This is a private role play between Yuudai [derivative] and Kiran [Kazu-chan].

Setting:
The docks. After some time apart, the two run into one another again and rekindle a friendship.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 14, 2011 8:10 pm

It had been some time since Yuudai had shown his face around his hometown. He'd spent so long across country with distant relatives that he wouldn't be surprised if much had changed without him; a bit saddened, but not surprised. His sisters were growing up, and old friends hadn't kept in touch, but that was to be expected. There was a war afoot, and times were hard enough as it was without trying to maintain friendships through the difficult times. He'd kept in touch with Ran, but that was about it... as for all of the others, he felt he'd drifted too far, and would have changed too little, if he'd kept in steady contact.

And then there were those he didn't want to keep in touch with. His expression tightened at the thought of one in particular, one who had embarrassed him and violated his privacy and his integrity in the basest way. No, there were some acquaintances he was not looking to revive, not anytime soon.

He'd gotten back in touch with his own family and that of Ran's, spent a few days simply settling back into the rhythm of his life. His sisters took turns either fawning over the new way he styled his hair (over the shoulder and in a braid, as opposed to the high ponytail he used to carry) or catching him up on what had happened in his absence. He was surprised to learn of Jianyu's personal affairs, but had yet to make his way to congratulate his brother -- that would come in due time as well. For now, Yuudai simply wanted to reconnect with his community, establish himself inside it once more.

He found himself at the docks, slippered feet slowing to a dwindling walk as he recognized familiar faces, greeted those whose names immediately leapt to mind. Yuudai had always been good at placing names to faces, but there were many workers that he didn't recognize; seasonal, perhaps, or younger people that he hadn't yet met because they had previously not been old enough to work with their families.

Things always changed.

Rounding a corner, he glanced toward the ocean, eyes pinching a bit at the corners as a gust of sea breeze lifted his bangs, and he saw someone he recognized. Though his acquaintance with the man had been short, and he'd been forced to abandon their cooking lessons because of his absence, Yuudai remembered Kiran fondly.

Lifting his hand, blue-tipped nails catching sunlight, he called out, "Kiran!"

It had been some time since they'd see one another, and he certainly looked different -- different enough to cause a double-take for some -- but enough the same that it should have been obvious who he was. He hoped.

There was a small smile on his face as he lengthened his stride, approaching to make conversation easier. "It's been some time, hasn't it? How are you?"

Money exchanged hands as Kiran sold another fish to woman, who happily carried off her purchase as she made her way from the docks. Kiran pocketed the money then turned his attention to the people passing by in hopes of seeking out another customer. He had spent many long hours working on building boats recently that it was nice to be out at the docks and selling fish again, after he spent a couple of hours relaxing and fishing. Being at the docks also gave him the opportunity to talk with some of the other fishermen. He could promote business for Bojing, his boss, by talking to the other fishermen about boats. Some of them had ships that needed repairs or were looking to buy a completely new ship altogether.

So much had changed since his days as a young academy student spending his off hours at the docks to make a bit of extra cash. Now it was a job to make a living, along with his job as a boat builder. He was making slow progress on his own boat, but he was okay with that. He was still just an apprentice and learning the craft. He felt his confidence growing every day as he worked hard to achieve his ultimate goal: to have his own boat and sail out on the open waters to fish. It might not be the most worthwhile dream in the world, but it was something that he wanted and cared a lot about accomplishing.

When he heard his name called out, Kiran lifted his head and looked for the person calling to him. He blinked a few times as the man approached him, for a brief moment trying to place the man who looked quite different from the last time they met. "Yuudai!" he said in surprise, almost not believing that Yuudai was there standing before him after the long absence.

He smiled widely at Yuudai, glad to see him again. "Quite sometime," he agreed with a short nod. "Ah, well, still selling fish." He gestured to the stall of fish still left to be sold, like it hadn't been obvious what he was doing at the docks. "Got to earn my money somehow now that I'm living on my own. But what about you? I haven't you around at all for the longest time."

It was nice to be recognized. In fact, it was nice enough that Yuudai's smile only grew, pleasure evident on his face when he closed the distance between them and bowed politely to his former acquaintance. It was nice to know that things may have changed all around, but people like Kiran were still selling their fish and moving forward in their lives; it made the changes less grating, more a natural progression. Not only that, but Kiran seemed happy, and time had wrought pleasant changes in him as well -- he was a little older, surely, but he seemed to have filled in his features a bit, come more into himself as a whole.

It just... it made Yuudai feel good. Thus far, everyone he'd encountered had changed for the better, and he hoped that the trend held.

"I recall your yellowtail being exceptional," he said, lips bowing up into a slight smile at the memory. How long ago had that been? A year, more? "It's nice to see that your business is still thriving."

At the mention of his absence, his mouth thinned out briefly. He brought a hand up,combing his fingers through the end of his braid, and shook his head. "I needed to leave for a time. I do apologize for the lack of notice... I wasn't aware that I was going until I was nearly out the door. I spent some time with family I haven't seen in a long time."

He took a deep breath, blue brows knitting. After a moment's consideration, his expression smoothed out again. "But it's good to be home. I've been meaning to catch up with everyone. To that end, would you like to join me for a meal sometime?" After a brief pause, he added, "I trust you've kept up on your cooking lessons?"

It made him swell with pride to hear how good his fish was. It wasn't often that he got such compliments, even with repeat customers stopping by to check what fish he had brought to the docks. Most of those repeat customers were more than happy to buy more of the fish he caught, but he didn't often hear from them how good the fish had been. The compliment made him smile yet wider. "Yes, though I hope to make it even more successful once I have a boat and start fishing in deeper water," Kiran explained. Not that there was anything wrong with catching fish at the shore of the sea or a lake. But bigger business at the docks tended to be those that had ships to sale out to sea.

Yuudai's hair was different from the last time they met, now being tied in a braid. And he had grown older, more mature, Kiran guessed as the same was true for him. Though sometimes, he still felt like he was still a young academy student. But when he caught the brief thinning of Yuudai's mouth, Kiran's smile wavered. What exactly had happened when Yuudai went away so suddenly? But he thought it would perhaps be rude to pry into that private business. The brief change in expression did cause him some worry.

He shook his head at Yuudai's apology. "It happens sometimes," he said, like it wasn't such a big deal that it warranted an apology. Not long ago, he had met up again with Sakn after a long absence. That almost made him start to wonder if he had anything to do with him that caused people around to suddenly disappear without any warning. But both Sakn and Yuudai came back in the end. That was all that really mattered, wasn't it? And he was more than happy to reunite with both of them.

"And it's good to see you again." Kiran laughed a bit weakly, rubbing the back of his neck as his cheeks tinged pink. "Well, I haven't burned my apartment down or poisoned myself yet. I suppose that's a plus, yeah?" He let out a sigh. It was true that he wasn't as terrible at cooking as his mother. "But some more lessons could definitely help improve my cooking." A hopeful smile tugged at the corners of his lips.

Yuudai could well understand taking pride in one's business; while he had been gone, it had hurt him almost as much to be away from the Inn as it did to be away from his family and friends. That business, passed down his family through the generations, was his pride and joy, and it didn't even belong to him yet. In due time, he would take the reigns from his parents, but he still had much to learn. Still, seeing Kiran's enthusiasm and pride for his own business reminded him of why he considered the other man fondly.

Placing his hands on his hips, he hiked his brows at Kiran's less-than-exemplary description of his own cooking talents. Oh, dear. He couldn't take his eyes off anyone for more than a moment, could he? How could he have expected Kiran to continue his cooking lessons with reliable instructor?

"That won't do at all," he said briskly, glancing past Kiran to see if he was keeping him from any important matters. No, it didn't really seem so; no one was clamboring for the other man's attention, at least. "It wouldn't be any trouble for me to teach you what I know. I enjoy it, and if you're going to live alone, you might as well know how to properly cook for yourself."

Truth be told, it had been a long time since he was in a position to take care of anyone, and his mothering instincts were practically bursting at the seams of him. He highly doubted that Kiran was paying much attention to the nutritional value of what he was eating, anyhow, and if he couldn't even cook very well how could he be expected to created a balanced diet for himself? The very thought was preposterous. They were friends, anyhow, and Yuudai wanted to reconnect with people now that he was back.

It was a logical endeavor. "It will give us time to catch up, anyhow," he added, semi-hopefully.

Time spent with only his family had reminded him how much he actually missed conversing with people his own age, it seemed.

The way that Yuudai's brow reached up toward his hairline almost made Kiran shrink back, like he was afraid of getting yelled at. He was used to that sort of thing from his mother. But it was easy to argue back against his mother. They both had such stubborn attitudes at times. But with a friend, he worried about upsetting them. And after Yuudai's long absence, the last thing he wanted to do upon their reunion was making Yuudai angry with him.

"There's only so much plain white rice and fish a man can eat," Kiran joked with a laugh. That made up most of his meals, unless he decided to dine out or buy snacks from a vendor at the market. Since getting fish was easy, being a fisherman, that cut down on the cost of money he spent on buying groceries. He sometimes steamed or fried vegetables to go along with his meal. But he still wasn't good at knowing what spices went well with each other or what was best for seasoning certain things. And sauces! He still had a lot of learning to do when it came to cooking.

"But it would be great if I could something more than that." And it would be a little victory for him if he could show his mother just how capable he was of living on his own if he cooked some fabulous dinner for the family sometime. His mother would probably be furious if he offered to cook on one of the occasions he went to visit his family. The look on her face would be priceless, and he bet that his father and sister would be happy to have a dinner that was burnt beyond recognition and tasting of some unmentionable horror.

"I'd like that," he said. Kiran knew there was probably lots for them to catch up on. "I have off days here and there, if you want to schedule a time to meet up for a lesson."

Plain white rice and fish. Oh, he certainly had his work cut out for him. More pleased by the prospect than not, as Yuudai liked to be busy and he liked to feel useful, he mentally went over his schedule to see where he would have an opening. As before, he could slip some time in between his morning chores and his evening duties to the inn, although that was dependent on whether or not Kiran was available then. Well, they would make it work somehow.

"That's not good for you, you know. You need a healthy, balanced diet, especially if you're going to be working and spending all hours out on the sea." His tone was crisp and a little reprimanding, but not altogether full of censure. "I can certainly help with that."

He reached up to rub his chin, expression thoughtful. "Actually, if you recall where my family's inn is located, this will be very easy. You can stop by whenever you have free time, as I can usually be found there, and I'll just take you into the kitchen and we can cook something."

Most people learned best by doing, anyhow, and if he could make Kiran useful while he taught him, that would be more the better. He could send Kiran off with a packed lunch of his own making after a hard day's work, and it would give Yuudai some quality time with someone other than his family.

Yes, it was an excellent plan. Especially since he didn't plan on entertaining Bataar in his home again anytime soon.

Kiran felt a little embarrassed. He knew his meal plan wasn't exactly the most nutritious. But he, at least, never had to worry much about putting on any unwanted pounds. He spent too much time being active doing one thing or another, which really helped to keep him fit. But even he knew of the importance of eating healthy, which left on his own, he tended not to do.

"Well, at least I'm eating better than before with all that unrecognizable food my mom would cook," he said with a hopeful smile stretched across his face, thinking it might lessen some more of that reprimanding tone in Yuudai's voice. "The help would be greatly appreciated." Before their first meeting, Kiran never really gave much thought to cooking his own meals. His mother never gave him much choice in the matter since she was very territorial when it came to the kitchen. But meeting Yuudai opened his eyes to the idea of cooking.

"I still remember where it is." He hadn't been there too many times, but he could still recall the way to the inn. His first time visiting the inn had been rather memorable, being the first time he met Bataar as well. And how could anyone forget meeting the large, nearly naked man demanding food? It was a memory that just stuck with a person, even if they tried to forget it. "Then I can pop over there on my next day off." He paused to think a moment about it. "Unless you wanted to do a lesson right now."

He didn't have any plans for the rest of the day. Since Bojing had given him the day off from work, Kiran didn't have to worry about rushing back there to finish up his work to stay on schedule. He still had some fish left in his stall for sale, but he could pack them up to sell another day. Or he could just keep them for himself to use for cooking. That was one of the nice thing about running his own stall at the docks: he could decide his own hours for working or shut down early if he wanted.

Yuudai honestly didn't understand how anyone reached adulthood without even basic cooking skills, such as Kiran's mother. Honestly? It was one of the first things that had been taught to him and his sisters, though of all of them, only he and Masami had really taken to the art. Still, all of his sisters were more than capable of preparing a decent meal, even Shizuka, and she was the youngest of them all! One day they would have to provide for their own families, and it wasn't really all that wise to depend on one's spouse to take over the culinary duties, especially in the case of... well, being a woman.

Yuudai would of course cook for his family when he eventually married and had children, but that was to be expected. He would be running the ryokan and it would be part of his job duties. If his wife wanted to cook as well, that would be fine, but for the most part, Yuudai intended to take over the domestic chores.

He had begun to think more and more about his future domesticity, given that he was aging and moving on in his life. Not all of his thoughts had been exactly... settled, however, and he was hardly going to stand there and deeply contemplate his future in the midst of a conversation.

Ridiculous.

"Right now would be fine," he said, tucking his arms around himself with a pleasant smile. "I was just taking a walk and then intending to go home, anyhow."

Kiran thought he had another customer coming his way. An elderly woman paused to take a look at the remaining fish in his stall, standing there for several moments. But her contemplation ended as a neighboring vendor started shouting out to get the attention of passersby. The elderly woman quickly made her way over to his stall. A tendril of anger crept into him at losing a customer, but he stomped down on it. He couldn't feel bitterness toward the other vendor when he was merely doing his job. Kiran could grab the attention of people, too, if he started calling out to passersby. But he was in the midst of a conversation.

"Great! I was going to pack it in soon anyway," Kiran said as he found the crate that he used for carrying his fish to and from the docks. "It looks like the rush of the day has passed." There was still quite a lot of people out and about, checking out the different stall at the docks, but he didn't think he would get many more people stopping by his stall.

"As you can see, I have some great fish we can work with." He chuckled as he picked up a few of the fish and started placing them into the ice filled crate. "But maybe something else," he offered after thinking about it. He did already eat a lot of fish, though he still had lots to learn about properly seasoning them and other ways of cooking them other than simply frying them in a pan. But it would be good to learn to cooking other things as well, like chicken or beef or pork.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 15, 2011 12:02 am

Yuudai felt a sliver of guilt creep in when he saw Kiran lose business due to conversation, and he knew that he was at least partially to blame for that. Being someone who was standing there conversing with him rather than purchasing food, it didn't exactly look good for business. Because of this, he resolved to take some of Kiran's catch off his hands and use it in turn to cook; this was becoming a bit of a habit with them.

"If you want to pack up now, I'll help you," he offered. Already he was pushing his sleeves up, flipping his braid over his shoulder so that it wouldn't be in his way. "And I'll purchase some of this fish. We'll use it tonight, and then I won't feel poorly for disrupting your business."

There was certainly more than one way to cut and dress a fish, and he was willing to bet that Kiran didn't know his way around seasoning and spice any more than he did, well, anything else in the kitchen. The prospect of having so much work to do was exciting rather than annoying, however.

Kiran moved over to allow Yuudai to help with placing the fish from the stall into the crate. Though he was making a name for himself at the docks, he still lost out most of the time to the bigger stalls that had become staples at the docks for years. So it wasn't unusual for him to be passed over by customer in favor of those bigger stalls.

He shook his head. "Don't feel bad," he told Yuudai, patting him on the shoulder. Kiran held no blame toward him for any loss of business. He had sold off a decent amount prior to Yuudai showing up. "I'm always happy to sell to a good friend."

With the last of the fish packed away in the crate, Kiran lifted it from the ground. He considered suggesting stopping by his apartment to drop off the crate, but if Yuudai was going to buy some of the fish, it made more sense just to bring it along with him. Yuudai would be able to browse the remainder of his latest catch at leisure then. "Ready to go?" He grinned at Yuudai, excited at the prospect of starting up his cooking lessons again. And it would give them time to catch up with each other.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 15, 2011 1:39 pm

Yuudai felt a little badly, seeing Kiran hoist up the crate and prepare to carry it like it was nothing. He wanted to be able to assist in some way, but he didn't want to insult his friend by implying that he would struggle with it; obviously he wouldn't, as he did this for a living. Yuudai would certainly prickle if someone attempted to relieve him of one of his regular duties.

He offered Kiran a smile, one that widened to almost boyish embarrassment at being referred to as a good friend. Yuudai didn't actually have many that he could call good friend, and he was looking to change that -- especially with those who were aligned on the same side of the war as himself as his family. That was getting more and more difficult, what with Jianyu as his brother-in-law and Ran's family being firmly aligned with the Legion, but...

Times were changing. He had to change with them.

"I'm ready," he said, his voice a little more serious than it had been. Still, he did his best to shake off his somber mood, smiling a little bit at Kiran again. "My parents will be glad to see you, I think. They enjoy getting to know the vendors we buy from, and haven't had cause to go out to the market themselves much lately."

Kiran had no trouble with the crate, having to carry it every time he went to and from the docks to sell fish. He stepped around the stall, now that they were ready to leave. "I'm sure it will be a pleasure to meet them," he said, though a small amount of nervous bubbled through him. He didn't often meet the parents of his friends. Yue was probably the only one whose parents he met, and that had only been briefly at before the wedding.

He started on his way from the docks with Yuudai. After a moment of thinking about things, he glanced over at his friend. "What's your family like?" If he was going to meet with Yuudai's parents, Kiran thought it would be good to know a little bit about them. Especially if there was anything he should be wary of so that he doesn't offend them or cause embarrassment to himself.

Though there was the chance that might only cause him more nervousness about meeting a friend's parents. But family was a topic they hadn't really discussed much before. Kiran, himself, had pretty much only mentioned how terrible a cook his mother was when talking about family.
