When he arrived, arms loaded with a crate of fresh fish to sell, at the docks that morning, Kiran expected the usual chaos, people chattering and fish sellers calling out for customers. His load wasn't as big as usual, having less time of late with work and training and missions to go out and fish for a while, but he could get quite a bit for what he had to offer. After selling all the fish, he planned to make another round of checking up with past customers and see if their boats were still in good shape, if he could catch them before they set out of another day at sea for fishing.
But the chaos that met him when he step foot onto the docks and into the fish market was something he couldn't believe. From afar, he hadn't suspected anything but the usual din of people talking all at once. Before the docks came into view, his worries grew a little as the noise seemed louder than usual. When he was in the thick of the chaos, a flutter of panic seized him. Customers were screaming in outrage, but with so much noise, Kiran had trouble picking out one voice from all the rest. He caught fragments of words, only putting together that some of the vendors had raised their prices and customers weren't entirely happy with the change.
Kiran tried to make his way through the crowd, weaving as best as he could to a place that would be safe to stand in and maybe find someone to explain the situation better to him. The crowd jostled him left and right, forcing him in whatever direction it wished. Someone rammed him hard from behind, knocking him into the person in front of him. His crate smashed between them. Fish and ice scattered across the docks, causing some people to slip. As he pushed his way through, Kiran experienced a few times when his feet left the ground completely, which was quite unsettling among the wave of people.
When he finally burst free of the chaos, he felt bruised and battered, like he had just been in a terrible fight with some big brute. There was a thin cut down his left arm, blood smeared across his flesh, and he couldn't even remember how he had come by that wound. He hadn't felt anything sharp slice him. He took refuge in a small storage unit, binding up the cut with a strip torn from his vest, as he tried to sort out everything in his mind. His head throbbed like someone had rammed it into the side of a wall. He was certain more than one person had brained him in the head with fist and elbow.

Under normal circumstances, Jianyu did not normally find himself down at the docks, of all places. Lately, as was the case with all of the Legionnaire Captains, most his time had been spent within the barracks of his own division, training the new recruits and preparing for whatever it was that may lie ahead - and he still did not know what that would be, especially considering what he was now.
He was still getting used to the tail.
Today, however, was one of Jianyu's rare days off, and since Yue had made it expressly clear that they had little to no food in their humble abode, he decided to make his way to the docks to pick up a few bags of fish, and would possibly stop by the market as well for some spices. He spent his morning haggling good naturedly with the fishermen, exchanging pleasantries and teasing remarks until they had all settled on a final agreement that they all were happy with.
Satisfied, Jianyu turned to go - but there was a sudden shout, a scuffle, and then all hell broke lose.
Or so it seemed. Jianyu was not certain what had even happened, but around him there were angry screams and outraged cries, the sound of crates being smashed. His tail whipped around, catching on something, and he heard a tearing noise, inwardly cursing himself for his clumsiness. Jianyu's hand went for his crossbow, intending to take some sort of preventative measure, but the crowds were too thick, the chance of hitting an innocent bystander too great.
"What the devil is going on - "
It seemed like ages until things started to settle down, and even then it was still noisy, a small cut on Jianyu's face as ran after one of the men who had started it all. The man was a Noble, clearly uncaring as to who he hurt in the process, and as Jianyu crouched around a local storage unit, slipping inside to look, he heard the door slam behind him with a loud clank
It was pitch black inside - and Jianyu's mind went stupid, stupid, stupid over and over again, like an annoying little chant. How could he have dropped his guard so easily?
However he was not ignorant enough to think he was alone in the shed - he could hear someone breathing sharply somewhere behind him, and Jianyu turned slowly, careful to keep his tail from knocking into anything. His hand held his crossbow, a bolt already slid into the metal groove, ready and waiting.
"Who's there?"

Outside the storage unit, he could still here the riot raging, people shouting and shoving each other. The snap of wood from smashing crates almost went muffled under all the noise from the people making a terrible fuss about what Kiran wasn't entirely sure. His mind was still reeling from the sight of what he caught taking place beyond his current hiding place.
What exactly was going on? Why were the people rioting? None of it made any sense to him.
The loud clank that followed when he slammed the door of the storage unit shut when unnoticed by him. But as soon as he finished bandaging up his arm, the realization that someone else had chosen the same place to take refuge as him cut through the throbbing pain of his head. Kiran held up his hands.
"Not here to fight," he answered quickly, hoping whoever was in the unit with him wasn't as rowdy as the people outside. It took a moment but then it clicked in his mind. The voice sounded familiar, and it was another moment before he placed it. "Jianyu?" he questioned uncertainly, surprised that he might find the Legionnaire here at a time like this. He hoped a fight wouldn't arise between them. From their first encounter, Kiran knew how accurate Jianyu's aim was with a bow and arrow.
