The waning moon shone through the dense canopy in silvery ribbons of light, catching the dust motes and making them dance and sparkle like diamond dust. A dusky doe daintily picked her way over the forest floor, avoiding pitfalls and treacherous slides of pebbles. She faded in and out of focus, her fur blending with the shadows all too easily, though her glowing teal eyes were impossible to miss. When she stepped into a moonbeam, a discerning eye might glimpse a hint of melancholy in her features. Sumerki was not the type who was prone to brooding. In fact, she rather disliked people who spent more time moping than living their lives. However, she had been on her own for some time, now, and that was enough to dampen even her spirits. After all, she was a lady, not some lone rogue who preferred solitude to company. She really must find someone with which to travel. A companion at the very least, though a protector would be preferable. Of a certainty, she could take care of herself when forced, but it really was far too dangerous and not at all proper for a true lady. A soft rustle somewhere to the left caused the doe's ears to swivel around as she scanned the area for the source of the noise. A predator? Another deer? She could not yet tell.

Venn is a buck made for the forest, the brown and tan of his hide with his vine and leaf accents blending him well into the bark and foliage of the surrounding trees. In the deepest parts of the forest he feels most at home, where he finds easy cover amongst the thick underbrush. It is the glowing of his eyes that gives him away the most, the too-bright green marking him in the dark. He is not alone in this trait however, and a fellow glow is what alerts him to the presence of another. He watches silently at first from within the brush, observing the other before taking any action. A doe born of twilight, she reminds him of dusk and fireflies. Her bright teal eyes are what he first noticed, though now he also sees the bright flowers behind her ear that seem to softly glow. She is also alone, something he notes after waiting and seeing no others come after her. He wonders if it is by choice or simply chance, it is not always easy to find companions to travel with. He too, has been alone for some time. He has never particularly minded, finding the solitude peaceful and never finding the need to seek out a herd as others do. And yet he is a protector by his very nature and feels the pull even when alone. In the waking world (though he does not know it here) he is a protector to his chosen. In the Dreaming however, he is alone and the lack of purpose leaves him feeling unfulfilled. It is perhaps for this reason that he steps forward now, letting his presence be known. If not by choice, then one such as her should not travel alone, many creatures stalked the Wardwood and not all were harmless. He walks out of the brush slowly as to not alarm her, and stops before he reaches her, nodding his head towards her in greeting. "It is dangerous in this area to be alone, there have been sightings of roaming beasts." He hesitates a moment, realizing she does not know him. "I am Venn, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Oh!" she exclaimed softly as the great buck made himself known. My, but he was a handsome one and he showed such concern for her well-being. Had her unhappy musings been answered, after all? Who said there was no truth to the power of one's thoughts. That, or she was simply that lucky. Either way, the doe nodded in regal acknowledgement of his words.
"I am Sumerki," she said. "And the pleasure is all mine. Thank you for the warning. I had not realized it was such a hazardous area to be in."
She glanced at the dense shadows. "Although I must admit, it does give off a...less than comfortable atmosphere."

"Sumerki," he says in acknowledgement, the name rolling nicely off his tongue. He hopes he has not frightened her, he does not mean to imply everything here is dangerous, though he has heard rumours, seen several abandoned carcasses of smaller creatures. But perhaps it is best not to mention all the details.
"It is not always so," he smiles to ease her mind. "But lately there have been things that indicate that less than welcome visitors are in the area."
Venn glances over to the forest as she does. It can indeed be unnerving with the thickness of the brush. A blessing and a curse together he suspects. It conceals him rather well, though he realizes it must also conceal other creatures rather well too. But he is happy to have found another deer, perhaps they could even travel together for a time. Nothing wrong with some company, and he would not feel right leaving her on her own. Though he is sure she can take care of herself it would be irresponsible of him to not at least offer, if she is interested.
"If you should like, I can escort you through the forest," he offers.

Although she wonders about these indications, the doe decides that she would probably rather not know. It is probably something terribly unpleasant, and she would much rather think about this gallant buck than dangerous enemies. That is not to say that she disregarded the threat, she was all too aware of it, but she knew better than to dwell on such things. It could make a deer paranoid.
"My, but that is a most noble gesture," she observes with a demure little smile. "How rare. I am honored to accept."
Truly, Sumerki was amazed at her luck. What were the odds of coming across such a buck? One who was courteous and chivalrous, both. For a moment, she wondered how long they would be traveling together, but she dismissed the thought from her mind. No use worrying about such things now. Their acquaintance would evolve naturally. Only time would tell.
She glanced sidelong at him. "You say it is not always so hazardous. Do you live in this part of the forest, then?"

He dips his head to her. "It is always my pleasure to aid a lady." And then he considers her next question. "I don't so much live here...but I have been here a month now and the area is beginning to feel more familiar to me. I tend to stay for a time in one place and then move on, I can't really say why. Perhaps I simply get restless." Venn has been this way since he was young, a knight without a cause. He would wander from area to area, generally alone though sometimes he would meet others. He never had a particularly strong connection to any area or anyone he met. But meeting Sumerki was strangely invigorating. At her acceptance of his offer he felt a sense of much needed purpose come into his life and for this he was grateful. Even if it was just something like accompanying her through the forest he had a role to play. And after all he had been telling nothing but the truth when he mentioned the sightings and rumours that were in this area. He felt a bit better as well that two pairs of eyes was always better than one when it came to spotting danger. Not to mention company was nice. The forest could get lonely when one was by themselves so often.

"Yes," she agreed. "I, too, have yet to find a place compelling enough to keep me there." It was a pity, really. Sumerki belonged in a herd, or at least somewhere close enough to one that she could have good company from time to time. Even better, she ought to have suitors. Her pick of mates. Or perhaps someone to sweep her off her hooves. Oh, well. Perhaps someday. For now, time was a-wasting.
"Shall we?" she invited, then started off in the direction she had been heading before Venn had made himself known to her. It was not that she was heading anywhere in particular, but at least the movement gave her some semblance of purpose. And with the noble buck by her side? Well, she did not mind wandering a little longer.

"Enticing places can be found here to be sure but they are much less enticing when they lack the right company." He says, possibly by way of explanation of his solitude. Well he had found a few places before, other deer, some alone and some in herds. But somehow he had never found that sense of belonging among the others he had met and so though they parted as friends, he had never felt compelled to stay. Company was nice though, he could not deny that and having Sumerki to travel with was pleasant.
"Of course," he dips his head in acknowledgement and sets his pace to hers. They have not been talking long, a short while only perhaps. And yet as they set of, he notices something he failed to notice before. There is quiet in the forest. Not to say the forest is loud at other times but there is an certain absence of noise now from owls and the small mammals that scurry about. He flicks his ears, eyes scanning the forest as his nostrils flare to catch stray scent. He does not want to raise unnecessary alarm for his companion, but he is uneasy.

"That is exactly correct," she agreed. "Even when the company ought to have been delightful, something always seems to have been off." Something in her tone said that she had ample experience with this, and it had been less than pleasant.
Any concerns that she might have had about her imminent danger had vanished when Venn had stepped out of the brush. Nothing untoward immediately catches her attention. Not many creature would dare take on two guardians, especially not when one of them was a strong young buck with a pair of strong, lethal antlers to his credit.
However, the doe was paying attention to her companion. She cannot pinpoint the source of his unease, but she noticed his sudden attentiveness and her own ears begin to scan the area.
"Is anything the matter?"
