Backstory Setsushi was born in the year Jiwa 30 (Toutei 691) in the small coast town of Spring Cove, south of the Capital. His mother was Chiyo, Lucid Water, chief judge of Spring Cove. His father was Setsuka, Dreaming Water, who was once a dancer in the Imperial Palace; however, he died due to a heartbreak before Setsushi was born.
As a small child, Setsushi was noted for being exceptionally sensitive and bright, but rather shy and hesitant to make friends. He excelled in the beautiful arts, and his teachers predicted he would become a poet or dancer. After entering puberty, however, he grew exceptionally tall and strong, and they pushed him to become a swordsman.
In the year Rishi 9 (Toutei 704), Setsushi came of age; he was declared Lucid and given the Name of Water. He became the squire of the Knight Tetsuhi, Lucid Fire, who was the husband of Anren, the Dreaming daughter of Madame Jyuuryou. Tetsuhi trained Setsushi in the bow, daitou, and three-sword-style. The exceptional youth far outperformed his peers, and was even able to levitate three swords at once, making a four-sword-style. Yet no women showed interest in marrying him, perhaps because of his unusual height -- he stood heads above other males and appeared massive and burly even in comparison to other warriors -- or because his character lacked masculinity and sweetness.
In Rishi 12 (Toutei 707), Anren's elder sister, Madame Jyuukou, sent Tetsuhi to fight rebels in Kokoku; knowing he would die, Tetsuhi released Setsushi, who returned to his mother and served in Spring Cove as a junior military officer. In Rishi 13, Chiyo became ill, and arranged for Setsushi to serve under the Dragon Knight Tenkyuu. Although he risked being stripped of his rank, Setsushi refused to leave his mother's side until her death; Tenkyuu was impressed rather than displeased and formed a favorable opinion of him right away. He often accompanied her on inspections and expeditions around Toukoku and Rinkoku, and rose rapidly in rank due to his exceptional performance.
When he was made a Knight in Rishi 16 (Toutei 711), he was already known among the nobles; they nicknamed him the "Ice Maiden" for his heartlessness in battle and feminine seriousness outside of it. Although he occasionally moved in powerful circles, he did not make many friends, and there were still no offers of marriage. He did find some allies, however, in the junior male officers who idolized him, and Emperor Consort Kouwa and Imperial Princesses Seian, Kinan, and Rika.
In Rishi 20 (Toutei 715), Tenkyuu retired from the Dragon Knights and recommended Setsushi to take her place. Although Imperial Princess Souken had grown to fear and resent Setsushi and was strenuously opposed to appointing a male Dragon Knight, Madame Hiwa, elder sister of Emperor Consort Kouwa, was in favor, and the Empress gave Setsushi the rank. Although nominally Setsushi's power had increased, the enmity of the Souken faction prevented him from receiving significant roles or honors, especially after the death of Kouwa in Rishi 21.
And so for five years Setsushi did little more than patrol Toukoku, subduing monsters and thieves and settling disputes, mentoring young military males, and (unknowingly) building up a legend of a huge, powerful, elegant and icy male Dragon Knight. Early in Rishi 25 (Toutei 720), although he was still unmarried, he took on a squire, Fuushi.
But Setsushi was only able to train Fuushi for a few months before disappearing near the Great Bay under mysterious circumstances...

Personality Being 'different' tends to push a child in one of two directions; he may learn to embrace his weirdness or try his hardest to hide it behind a facade of normality. Setsushi, who has been a good foot taller than the average male since his early adolescence, has thrown himself desperately upon the latter option. Exceedingly proper, hard-working, neat, and polite, he has devoted his whole life to the obedience of his superiors, the defense of justice and fairness, and the fulfillment of his mother's aspirations. Due to this dedication, he has been appointed a Dragon Knight -- and gained a reputation as a lawful, just, neurotic, feminine, prim, six-foot-three swordsman-freak.
Although he is known in the Golden World for feminine coldness and calm, a deep respect for propriety, and the ability to make rational decisions under pressure, this icy and elegant facade is a mask for his shy and nervous interior. He desperately wishes to serve and please others and lives in deep fear of offending them; he therefore strives for perfect politeness and correctness, which makes him seem overly stiff and formal at times. As a consequence of this -- and his tendency to run away from women to whom he is attracted -- he is a bachelor at 29, bearing the unflattering nickname "Maiden of Ice."
Perhaps because he is trapped in the youthful status of "maiden," he is almost in a state of arrested development; Setsushi is truthfully middle-aged, but he acts much more like a 13-year-old than a 30-year-old. In the military, he leads well, but only when he also has a leader; he has strong moral opinions that exactly conform with his mother's; he is always anxious of being judged by his authority figures. He is also a country gentleman, a wealthy aristocrat who is magnanimous and honorable but sometimes ignorant concerning mercantile affairs and the struggles of the poor -- though his service in the military has tempered this naivete somewhat.Likes and dislikes Setsushi likes nothing better than to put things "right" or do the "right" things, and is greatly bothered when things are out of order or "wrong." Accordingly, he tries very hard to be the perfect servant, deriving great satisfaction from feeling helpful and subordinate.
Setsushi's friends and servants note that he has a bizarre love of cleaning, probably deriving from his desire for correctness; when he senses dirt or disorder, he has an uncontrollable urge to pounce on it immediately.
A peaceful, polite, and cooperative atmosphere pleases him the most. It may be strange, then, that he is a Knight, a profession based on killing and terrorizing people. Setsushi persisted in this work for several reasons: his mother approved; Setsushi is able to use his position to avert protect the weak and prevent large-scale clashes by ending altercations quickly; and if Setsushi does his job efficiently, the Empire will need fewer soldiers and Knights, and other people will be spared from the unpleasant job. He has, however, gradually become more and more unhappy in his work; it is not, therefore, surprising that he threw himself so passionately into food service professions after arriving in Gaia.Favorite things Setsushi's favorite colors are blue and green; he dislikes sickly yellow-orange tones.
He prefers savory and bitter foods and dislikes the powdery sweet fare that is so common in Gaian cafes. Setsushi has, however, generally weak senses of taste and smell; he is famous for over-steeping his teas and for adding obscene amounts of pepper to everything.
He has enough of a sense of smell, though, to enjoy the aromas of sandalwood, balsam, and jasmine, and to recoil from the fake fruit notes that saturate bath supply stores.
His favorite food is udon with fried tofu skin, a specialty of his mother, and he is horrified by Gaian gelatin. Although he can drink wine easily -- most Porcelain cannot -- he prefers black and oolong teas. Sweet milk dishes, like ice cream, don't appeal to him -- never mind that they make him ill.
He loves bathing, though the idea of a public bath would probably horrify him. One of his favorite Gaian technologies is the shower. 4laugh

Activities
Skills... Setsushi is considered a peerless swordsman in the Golden World -- most believe that not even Unsou could match him. His strength and expertise may not, however, be anything that remarkable when compared to capable human swordsmen... especially considering that he is used to far outclassing everyone in reach and brute force and thus never needed intricate, perfect technique.
His technique is remarkable only in that he has learned to levitate three swords at once, one more than most Porcelain swordsmen. He can thus guard himself in all directions at the same time, providing a very flashy, intimidating-looking opponent for bandits and rebels. He still cannot swing his levitated swords with serious force, and his strict training at swords has crippled his ability to levitate differently-shaped and -weighted objects, but the Four Swords is still an impressive style.
Setsushi has also been trained in hand-to-hand combat, the spear, and the bow. His archery is quite good, perhaps owing to the tutelage of Heavenly Bow Tenkyuu; his other abilities are only average, though he is often able to win a fight just by virtue of his overwhelming size and strength. He also has a sound grasp of battle strategy (though he tends to be a bit conservative in his decision-making) and battlefield first aid.
He is a user of Water magic by virtue of being Lucid, but he has somewhat sacrificed this skill in order to develop his Four Swords. Even simple magical tasks tend to tire him.
These skills make Setsushi a formidable opponent on the battlefield. Off the battlefield, though, he strikes one as being somewhat of an inept, spoiled young nobleman; accustomed to always having servants or at least a squire at hand to take care of him, as well as elders and superiors to give him political and financial advice, he is a little bit shaky on his own.
At least he is familiar with court etiquette, able to bond well with soldiers due to his combined courage and gentility, and a fan of cleaning. He also enjoys cooking, an activity he often performed with his mother -- though he was only a novice when he arrived in Gaia, he has been rapidly improving.... and hobbies Setsushi's hobbies consist mainly of cleaning...
... what, other than cleaning?? Well, he likes to read, though his tastes tend to the popular rather than the scholarly; he is especially fond of novels full of melodrama, adventure, and romance, quaint pastoral stories, and sentimental poetry. History also interests him, though he once again approaches it more as entertainment than a serious scholarly matter. Lately he has been reading up on the histories of various human worlds.
He really does not have much time for hobbies other than reading, as he fills all other waking moments with part-time jobs and the unpaid meals and pots of tea he is always preparing for his visitors.

From the Golden World: SetsukaSetsuka, Setsushi's father, died before his son was born; apparently due to heartbreak caused by a forceful violation of his marriage.
Chiyo heart Setsushi's beloved mother, whose memory Setsushi holds in high regard. Her strong sense of justice and lucidité oblige were important influences on Setsushi's personality.
TetsuhiSetsushi's first teacher. Setsushi hasn't spoken of him much yet.
 Tenkyuu 3nodding Setsushi's commanding officer for most of his adult career. Setsushi entered her service immediately after his mother died, and she became like a second mother to him. Their personalities are quite different, but they understand one another well and get along.
KouwaEmpress Rishi's Fourth Emperor Consort. Apparently, he and Setsushi were acquainted.
 Rika 3nodding The Fifth Imperial Princess and one of Setsushi's dear friends from the Empire. He idolizes her, believing her to be the greatest intellectual of their time, and hopes to make her political vision come true through his service.
But everyone seems to construe this loyalty as a romantic attraction... stressed Souken gonk The First Imperial Princess, whom everyone fears...
 ChourouSetsushi respects Chourou but doesn't know her well personally. He is somewhat intimidated by her as she seems to be the perfect Dragon Knight without effort while Setsushi finds his duties stressful.
 Unsou sweatdrop Setsushi doesn't really like to be around Unsou, as she is very intimidating and has been unkind to him in the past. He doesn't think she's a bad person, but when he sees her coming he'd rather like to run in the other direction.
But he does worry that she will feel lonely and rootless in Gaia, so he thinks he ought to try to make friends with her...
Furuyama Itsuko gonk Setsushi does NOT want to talk about it.
 Tenryuu sweatdrop They know each other fairly well; Setsushi's known her for many years due to his friendship with Tenkyuu. Tenryuu is awfully mean to him, though; why does she have to tease him about sensitive things like his weight and his virginity? crying  Ryoua 3nodding Setsushi knows Ryoua fairly well through Tenkyuu, though they have not had much occasion to interact one-on-one yet. ...Plus Ryoua is a lot younger than him. Kouyo confused A very good friend, perhaps his only close male friend. Though the two are of very different life paths, they bonded over their shared lonely, maidenly fates. Setsushi trusts Kouyo not to get angry over any feeling Setsushi might express.
... Or at least that was the case, but building frustration with being trapped in the Golden World and being unable to cure Kouyo has begun to wear Setsushi's patience down.
Furuyama Ranko gonk As bizarre, evil, or confused as this woman may prove to be, Setsushi has to bring Kouyo to her, or Kouyo -- and maybe Setsushi -- will go completely mad.

Belongings Setsushi lives in the udon-ya, which is outfitted with the basic supplies for living. In addition to those...
He owns a set of clothing and armor from the Golden World, which he was wearing when he fell into Gaia. It consists of a set of beautiful blue and green robes, a very large brown pleated skirt that resembles hakama (but does not have separated legs,) and several pieces of blue-and-red armor with golden edges, featuring designs of swirling golden dragons. This is his "light armor," which he wears on patrols. It was specially crafted by Water tailors to resist water damage. The set is, however, a little clunky for wearing everyday around Gaia, so he usually wears only some of the underrobes or else completely mundane cotton clothing.
He also possesses a fine golden decorative haircomb with a slight magical enchantment on it for good luck and protection, which the Celestial Oracle instructed him to bring to Imperial Princess Rika; however, he arrived in Gaia before he could do so. He keeps it at the bottom of a drawer, under some clothes, though he checks on it often... and discovered it is missing! O_O
Among the other things he has from the Golden World:
Slender Snow
A delicate-looking, long single-edged sword with a blade so sharp it looks as if it could cut clear
through armor and so heavily enchanted it seems to sing and vibrate with power when unsheathed.
Representing the very height of Porcelain sword-making technology in 720 AE (though
other Knights were already in the process of commissioning rival swords, of course)
Slender Snow is an extremely sharp sword with a sophisticated configuration of hardness,
flexibility, weight, and magical resilience. Besides using the best 8th century techniques
in forming its physical body, an advanced, experimental method of enchantment was
used to fold twenty spells into it, compared to a Knight's sword's usual three, as well
as to allow these spells to be extracted, re-applied, and shuffled in the future.
It is specially made for Setsushi, as well; its length and weight were designed to suit
him, and among its enchantments is a psychic imprinting to Setsushi; if he calls it telekinetically,
its tsuka will leap to his hand. However, a serious disadvantage of its thinness, which enables its
fine cutting edge, is the danger of it being damaged or even snapping when entering a
target at the wrong angle. Thus, Setsushi tends not to use it; while carrying it with him,
he only draws it when he is confident he can strike correctly. As a consequence he tends to
coddle it, treating it so nicely and tenderly that it seems sometimes to be his baby (or his lover?)
