«« MAGIC BUGS PT. 1 (CLASS SOLO) »» Wyome was never one of those children that knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up. She remembered her one mother being strong, a warrior whose spear seemed like it could pierce anything. She knew her other mother was strong in her own way, travelling to collect the oddities that were scattered across the land. But she didn’t fit into a neat little category like either of her mothers. She was never strong like her Alkidike mother, even if she looked so much like her. She wasn’t as tenacious and strong willed as her Leaf mother either. She lacked the strength to be sure of her future.
But that spear of her mother’s couldn’t pierce everything and she was gone now. She had been spirited away to Tale to live among the earthlings. She wasn’t quite wanted their either. That was until she found herself her only real friend, Nootau. He accepted her with open arms, wanting to be her friend even if she was the weirdo with feelers and bug eyes. He never saw her as anything different but a playmate, and later his best friend. Many afternoons were spent together, just enjoying each other’s company and warmth.
Nootau was older though and he decided what he was going to be when he grew up. A shaman, he said, just like his grandpa was. He became a prentice and began to learn the trade under his grandfather, leaving their home for long periods of time as he studied. Wyome soon became a prentice as well, waiting for his return. When he did return, he showed her everything that he had learned, wanting to share the experience.
It was a slow and gradual process that she had her first spark of magic. Tears slipped from her eyes as a strange feeling welled up inside of her. There was something there, and she wasn’t quite sure what it was, that had allowed her to do something she never thought possible. Magic wasn’t for normal Alkidikes, only the mystics. But being a half-breed let her feel something that she wasn’t sure was possible. She didn’t have to be a warrior, nor did she have to be someone who never faced battle and hardship. She could use magic! Should she thank Aisha, or should she thank the spirits? She wasn’t quite sure of that either. Whatever was out there, she gave thanks to everyone she could think of.
Looking back to Nootau, who was rather lost why his friend was crying, she begged him to teach her more. It took time, she wasn’t the fastest to catch onto the ways of magic, but she had caught up to him rapidly. They were small spells, sure, but each one meant the world to her and she couldn’t thank the boy enough.
When it came time for him to leave with his grandfather, he brought her with him, hoping that she too could learn over his grandfather. He was having none of it. “Magic isn’t for bugs,” he said with disdain. It was like an arrow to her heart. Nootau couldn’t stand what was being said and tried to stand up for his friend. But Wyome urged him to just go with his grandfather. She would find her own way, a way that wouldn’t hurt Nootau’s chances of achieving his dreams.
She would learn magic herself. Magic was for everyone, even a bug like herself.

A scraped knee? An easy fix, really.
It had been almost a year since Wyome had left home on her misadventures and this new town was almost a breath of fresh air. But now, she had to help this little boy, er, Mein? Names not being her strong suit aside, she knelt down to him and wiped at a tear slipping down his face. It didn’t really soothe him, but she continued with a soft smile. “It’s okay, buddy. Aunt Wyome is here to save the day.”
Sniffle, sniffle, “What are you gonna do?” he roughly wiped at his nose between the sobs. The fact that the little boy didn’t run away was a show of tenacity in and of itself. She had worked so hard to have the children work past their parents’ distrust of her and now, with eyes of trust welled with tears looking at her, she knew she had to prove that she really was the aunty that would help out. “I’m gonna make the pain go away so we can fix your knee right up,” she kept the smile up. “We just have to clean it real quick then I can do a magic trick.” He looked skeptical for a moment, but she just grabbed a small container of water from her bag and ran it over his knee. He continued to sob, but it was slowing as she made sure that the cut was clean.
“Now take a deep breath.” Mein did as well as he could through the tears, though he was calming down by the minute. His leg clean of as much dirt as she could remove, she placed her hands gently over the wound. With a mumble and closed eyes, she began to concentrate. Maybe the only positive that came from the extremists was that she found a healer to teach her some basic magic to soothe and mend as long as the proper procedure was followed. She broke from her mumbles for a moment, smiling reassuringly, “This may sting just a bit.”
Coming back to his knee, she continued her incantation. With eyes closed, she didn’t notice the shimmer around her hands nor his quieting sobs; her focused remained on the words and the magic moving through her to the injury. It was slower than she liked, especially when Mein gave a small cry, but she soon found herself pulling away to inspect. “Better?”
The little boy wiped the final tears from his face and poked at his knee gingerly, examining it. “Yeah! Thank you!” And with that, he quickly scrambled away to his house with a smile.
See? Magic truly was for everyone. Someday she’d get the opportunity to show Nootau just what his lessons had meant to her.
