«« THEY WILL BE MINE PT. 1 (CLASS SOLO) »»
There was never a question within Eije’s mind. She would earn her father’s swords, no matter the cost. If she had to earn her grandfather’s respect to wield them, she would train every day to do so. If she would have to marry her best friend, then so be it. They were hers.
Those swords held not only the future, but the past within them. They were an accessory to every one of her closest memories of her father. She was often babysat as a child, her mother was gone and her grandfather distant. When he came home from protecting their home, he would place them next to his chair and pull her into his lap, telling her stories beyond her belief. As he spun tales of the gods and the creatures, she would stare in awe. Later, as she grew, he would let her hold a sword, promising that they would be hers when she was old enough. She would protect their homeland just as he did; she would be the strongest she could.
But he was gone now, just like her mother. She was alone in the world. Viv’s family treated her more like a person than her own grandfather. She found it harder and harder to smile having to live under her grandfather’s thumb while having to deal with the loss of her father. But he had the power as long as he held her swords. His reason? Because she was a woman and a man should be the one to wield them. She was somehow lesser because of her gender.
She had a plan. She could play the perfect granddaughter, wear the dresses and be wife material. She grated her teeth at the thought, but she would withstand his “training” her into a little housewife. Prim and proper? What was the point when they lived in such a harsh environment? It was survival of the fittest. They were rightfully hers and she would fight and bleed until they were in her possession.

«« THEY WILL BE MINE PT. 2 (CLASS SOLO) »»
There was a real disappointment in her eyes as Eije received the swords that she worked for so hard. So it was that easy? No marriage, no new engagements? Viv just has to run off to elope and she’d get the swords? Her hands tightened on the grip and sheathes as she thought about that night. All of that wasted time, how could she have been so stupid?
She didn’t have a real home anymore either.
“Pack your bags and get out of my house,” he said from his chair. “And take the stupid swords,” throwing them with such little care. She dove for them, catching the beloved swords with an ungraceful sound as she hit the ground instead of them. “I’m disgusted. You probably helped him plan his escape so you could get those worthless swords. Good riddance.” As she pushed herself off of the ground, he never looked at her again. They never spoke again after that. Her grandfather had just… given up on any notion of her being his and she barely cared. It was such a hollow victory, she was the one disgusted.
She didn’t know about him running off, but as soon as she heard she wished only for the best for her best friend. He deserved his happiness and she didn’t even mind that she would have to play her part as a little housewife for a different man. She would earn them no matter what.
But her grandfather had given up so easily, like she wasn’t worth the effort of teaching the ways of a housewife. She had faked compliancy with the best of them and for what? To just have her goal thrown at her? She had put so much effort into it all, that it just seemed like a waste. Maybe she should have just stolen the swords and run off if it would have just come to this. But with her bags packed and the swords clutched tightly to her chest, she wasn’t quite sure where she should go. She only had one idea, but she wasn’t sure how well it would go. She had to try though.
- - - - Maybe she did have a home. Viv’s father took her in without a single question, only a smile. It wasn’t a wonder Zevian and her father had been such good friends. There was no ill will from towards the broken engagement, only support and some slight anger towards her grandfather for kicking her out. He offered her a bed and food.
“You’re family, even if you didn’t marry my son.” No hesitation, no expectations.
Eije felt guilty though, she didn’t want to impose when she had nothing to offer. She couldn’t hunt well yet and she had no real talents other than swinging her father’s… no, her swords now. She would find a way to pay back the kind man.
She only stayed for a week, only asking if she could keep her belongings at his home until she found a way to pay him back for his kindness. “Are you sure you want to leave so soon? You’re always welcome,” he said with a pat to her head.
She smiled at the gesture, “yes, I need to find a way to pay you back for your kindness. I’ll come back with something you’ll like that will make up for the food, bed and space I’ll be taking up in my absence.” There was a small bit of bickering, not mean, but he didn’t expect anything. But she was determined.
She would follow in her best friend’s footsteps, making her way towards Sauti, or maybe even Tale. She wasn’t quite sure and she didn’t really care. It was time for a change of pace, a change in her life. They may have been in her possession, but Eije would earn her swords through struggling in the wilderness and she would bring back Zevian something to repay him for his kindness. With a smile that hadn't been seen in a long while, she made her way out into the mountains.
"I'll be back, don't you worry!"

«« FLASH FLOODS PT. 1 »»
Soft footfalls seemed to be the only noise echoing through the craggy hills of Sauti. The sailscales, usually loud and boisterous, were quiet, silently moving across the rocky masses to make their way to shelter. One would quickly peer from their hiding place at the sound of the earthling’s footfalls, but they quickly retreated to their homes. The sky was growing dark, but not so fast as to have the ice prentice worried. Hills and rain, that shouldn’t be too bad. She had her fair share of the blizzards of Zena’s mountains, so a little rain shouldn’t leave her too worried.
Though she wasn’t worried, she was wondering what Bergchi had in store for the pair. The goddess was never one to be at the forefront of the female’s mind, but something about the clouds descending upon the crags brought her to mind. Still, she wasn’t going to turn back. As the winds slowly made their appearance, Namidu clutched tighter beneath Eije’s cowl, leaving her concern to grow. He was a timid baby, yes, but never without some sort of stimuli.
The winds slow appearance didn’t have them continue to be slow in gaining momentum. As Eije made her way along the valley, it began pushing against her. It quickly was leaving her fighting against the current of the squall’s impending arrival. She stood her ground, not wanting to be bested by the air. She had overcome blizzards! What was the difference between that and a little rain?
A sound piqued her interest, ears perking at the sound right before Namidu let out a cry, clutching to his master tighter than he ever had before. “Namidu?” She didn’t have much time to think as the rain that had been lingering on the horizon let loose. It was wrong to not worry, to not find higher ground. Though it had been dry throughout this ravine previously, the rain had started elsewhere and now that water was coming. Eije had nowhere to go but out.
Clutching her cowl closer to keep Namidu in, she turned tail and ran. The rain was coming down hard, pelting the two of them with no regard. Cussing under her breath as she ran, she wasn’t sure what was coming next as she tried to outrun the flood that was following after her. She knew she shouldn’t be giving a prayer to the goddess as she ran, especially with not being very religious, but there wasn’t much else she could do as she made her way through the ravine, looking for any sort of exit or place to hide. There wasn’t as much as a boulder to climb on, let alone an exit. It wasn’t surprising, to be brutally honest. She had been the ravine for quite some time in her search for sailscale companions for Namidu. ‘I’m an idiot’ was the biggest thing crossing the prentice’s mind.
She must look like a rodent, scurrying away from impending doom, but it wasn’t very far from the truth as she tried to outrun the storm. But here was no outrunning the water that was quickly gaining momentum on the girl and her familiar. In seemingly no time at all, it was upon her. Looks like it’s time for a swim.

It wasn’t quite time to swim, but every step that Eije took became harder. The water was nearly to her knees, sloshing into her boots with every step. The ravine walls were even too slippery to attempt to climb. She knew that if she fell, she would be swept away and it didn’t seem like it would ever end… but she couldn’t just give in to the water’s will. She wouldn’t give up and leave herself and Namidu to the water.
Every step was followed by a frantic look into the ravine, looking for anything to grab ahold of to make sure they both survived. Though it wasn’t quite rapids yet, it was easily gaining on her, now easily above her knees. How were they going to get out of this? She slipped her hand back to the sailscale’s head, petting him with a reassuring coo.
He shivered against her back, crying in fear, clutching tighter to her back with every watery step. He wouldn’t leave her. He could easily jump from her back and fly into the shelters with the rest of his kind. What stopped him other than a cowl? Nami peaked his head out, pressing it into her neck. She was his everything and he couldn’t survive without Eije.
She wouldn’t be going anywhere without her precious Namidu. He was a gift from her best friend and now her greatest treasure. More important than her father’s swords easily. He filled her days with a brightness that she hadn’t experienced since she was small and on her father’s lap.
Father’s stories of perilous journeys still ran through Eije’s mind. She would have to muster that strength if she was going to get them out of this. She shouldn’t have been so foolish as to allow herself to overlook the rain; the animals had given her ample warning that she had ignored the whole time. But hubris was not the way she would end up going. If… no when she made it to a safer place, she would give an offering to the goddess for giving her another chance.
With that thought, salvation came in sight as she sloshed around the turn. A boulder, taller than her but misshapen enough to climb was the only option. The water was quickly gaining ground upon the ice earthling and her familiar, coming to her thighs. She didn’t have time to lose. With a near war cry, she pushed through the steadily rising water, now thigh high, scrambling for the rock. The footing was difficult, the ice earthling nearly falling into the chilling water, but as soon as she had a good foothold, she was ready and determined. Namidu clung, a low call urging his owner on. Her nails dug into the rock as well as they could, pulling them up.
As she made it atop the rock, she nearly cried, clinging desperately to the rock as Namidu let out a happy chortle from under her cowl. They did it… though safety wouldn’t come until the water receded. This was just a good start.

«« I DID HEAR »» Adapted from the Event Prompt
The rumors have been spreading, endlessly circling over campfires at night or the snaking through markets during the daylight. It was like an incessant noise at every gathering place that Eije found herself in. The Alkidikes were have said to have been ambushing earthlings, threatened to leave or possibly be killed. At first, there was the morbid curiosity, wondering if someone was seriously hurt or even killed in the ambushes. The rumors said yes, but over time, it was just becoming annoying. A rumor was a rumor, what else was there to do?
A gathering had been set to discuss the issue at hand and, surprisingly, there was a rather large crowd for the travelling people of Sauti to have in attendance. Set away from the buzzing crowd of people at the meeting that she just so happened to crash, Eije quietly sharpened her swords, Namidu curled close beside her, sleeping peacefully. It was a distraction from the droning that would irritate her if she focused too much, but she was curious about what was being said here in Sauti. She would have to find a place to stay later tonight, but for now, she casually brought her eyes back to the ongoing meeting around the bonfire. It had started peacefully enough, but after the opening statements, things began to slowly get heated. There were radicals, wanting to destroy them at the source, while others wanted to stay out of it, stay to their own and keep their families safe. Sauti was safe, right? Why would they bother with this place? An eastern expansion didn’t make sense if they were so fixated on their mother tree and the islands they resided on.
The ice earthling had never had an issue with the Alkidikes, especially considering she had never met one in any degree. She was just now feeling the full effects of the war’s ending, meeting so many other types of earthings aside from the normal wind and ice tribes. There was a whole new world to experience and to learn from. Yet, the Alkidikes didn’t seem to venture this far out, and she had only heard stories. There was an initial fear as her father told her about the bug women of the western forests of Jauhar, though she now knows that you don’t say that kind of thing now a days, but they rarely ventured into Zena and it wasn’t a concern. With the movement and mixing of people after the war, it wasn’t surprising that news and people spread quickly.
She moved to the next blade, sharpening it with a shake of her head. What did concern her was the fact that there were the extremists. Considering what she was currently hearing in the gathering, they had their fair share of them here as well, but why do the Alkidikes feel like they own the world when they’ve got some nice acreage in the rainforests? Excuse her language, but why would someone with insect features find the colder lands pleasant? She didn’t quite understand how they worked, other than they were “warrior women with bug eyes.” She realized that, yes, there were probably good hearted ones out there, but they were painted by a brush of ignorance and fear. It was hard to look away from that when that was what you grew up with. Who knew, maybe her first Alkidike would be one of those good ones, disapproving of the extremists that share their blood. Do they have blood?
She moved away from the morbid thought as the bickering of the meeting continued, one man raising his voice enough that Namidu stirred, letting out a soft growl. That was a feat in and of itself, he didn’t stir easily after the sun went down. Returning to her blades, she shook her head. Eije wasn’t afraid as she was as a child. She felt sorrier for the shifters that had to share and protect their own more than the merchants that were looted. The everyday struggle must be harder than the freak happenings. Taking a cloth from her bag, she slowly began to run circles over the metal, her touch gentle as she cleaned and polished.
A threat was at hand, and who knew if the warrior women would find their way into exterminating earthlings. Should we prepare for an upcoming war? Should we cover our eyes and ignore the rumor mill’s noise? It was up in the air, a large divide between the meeting goers. The ice earthling had a sinking feeling that the divide would follow suit through Tendaji, well, other than for the Alkidikes. If they were so set on coming with scare tactics, then they would come.
Now wasn’t the time to worry if all the people had to support the cause were rumors and accusations. Festivals were coming up, and she needed to appropriately thank Bergchi for giving her and Namidu a second chance. She would earn it, she thought as she gripped the blade’s grip, watching the shine of the fire in the polished metal.
There was a fire in the other earthling’s eyes, she could see that much from her seat. For now, she felt safe, they were far enough away to at least have some time to prepare. Her heart went out to the shifters and leaf earthlings of Jauhar and Tale. They were the most at risk of any kind of confrontation. But who knew how safe they really were? Who safe anyone was if they dared to set foot in the jungles that the women called home.
If it came down to it, would she be strong enough to assist in the struggle, to stop the extremists from hurting innocents? She didn’t quite enjoy the thought of a hot, humid rainforest, but it may come down to her paying a visit. But for now, there was an entertainment in watching the bickering before her. Tomorrow she could figure out what she was doing, she thought as she ran a hand along Namidu’s back, eliciting a soft purr from the reptile. Word Count: 1013
