The market was as bustling as ever, and the people paid little heed to the young girl and her spindly-legged shadow. It was less unusual than it had once been to see a guardian in the city's streets, though most still thought them simple deer. This was fortuitous for Faye, as she was probably not supposed to be out right now, even though she was doing nothing more dangerous than taking a walk and looking at the vendors' wares. The professor didn't like for her to be out alone, but she wasn't really, was she? Lethe was with her and young she may be, but the fawn had spirit. Besides, as a former member of the street herself, she wasn't liable to be mugged or kidnapped, even if such a feat could be managed here of all places.

A particularly shiny bauble caught her eye and she closed in on it with a frown. What was it? Some kind of looking-glass, perhaps? Would the professor like it? His birthday was nearing and she really did not know what to get him for a present. He had so many trinkets and curiosities already that she could not imagine what he could possibly need. It was proving most vexing. Lethe peered around her and sniffed at it, but snorted at the metallic scent. Her interest stamped out, the fawn perked her ears up and scanned the crowds.

Across the way, the crowd parts and she will see a particularly colorful cart, one that looks as if it has been draped in bits of rainbows from the roof of the cart to the sides to the many, many stacks and bundles within it. Through the soft murmur of the crowd she will hear a clink of coins and a man's voice, and a glance across the way may afford her a peculiar sight -- a man, someone's private guardsman by the look of his clothing, leaning over a fawn rather like her own. The fawn is much larger than hers, being a good bit older; the first nubbins of his antlers have begun to grow, and already he looks as if he will grow to be much bulkier, much heavier, than Lethe will ever dream of being. This is a good thing, since the man leaning over him is also very tall and broad shouldered, and overall looks to be a frightening sort, heavily muscled and marked all over with terrifying scars.

Yet before she can think to be afraid of him, she will likely notice something else: as intimidating as he looks, he has in his arms a great big bundle of assorted flowers, which he has just paid a very amused merchant for. His scarred face is warm with affection as he looks down at his Guardian, who is practically dancing in place with impatience and excitement. As the soldier thanks the flower-seller, the Guardian leans up on his back legs, stretching out to snatch a flower from the bundle before falling back down and eating it with his eyes half-closed in pleasure.

"Oi, lad, hold a wee bit there -- ye cannae jest stand in middle of yon market and eat! Come away now, there's a good lad." His voice is big and deep and rolling, and as he coaxes his delighted Guardian away from the flower-seller's stall, he will glance up and notice her .. and his face lights up as if he has recognized in her an old friend. " .. why, if it isn't a wee likkle lass from me ain home!"

It was Lethe who noticed him first, and drew the girl's attention to the odd scene. Faye hardly knew what to make of the man and his bundle of flowers, first being incredulous at the very sight of him, then hiding a giggle behind her hand. Of course, as soon as he took notice of her, her eyes widened and she dropped her hand.

Was he mad? She had never seen him before in her life and here he was greeting her like an old friend! It was disconcerting to say the least.

"I ain't never seen you afore, mister," she informed him tetchily, reverting to the street dialect in her surprise.

For her part, Lethe stepped boldly forward and verily growled at him, her ears flattened and her little legs spread wide.

He has turned already and stepped towards her, but at this show of hostility he pauses, and making certain to step out of the main thoroughfare he drops himself down into a crouch. By halving his height in this fashion he hopes to seem less imposing, for the last thing that he wishes is to give the poor gel a fright. " 'tis nae that oi knows ye, for oi can truly say oi dinnae; 'tis that oi know where you're from, lass, for ye've a familiar look tae ye. And the sweet hills of Airelund be far and far away again, and the beauty of ye puts me in mind of my home." He speaks as gently as he can, aware that his rough appearance is a mark against him -- but like many a man far from home, he has found that the farther he goes from Aireland, the more he misses it. In her he sees the people and the places he misses, and he sorely longs to hear how she's come here, how she's found it, and being that she looks to be a young thing, whether she remembers it at all.

Cadence does a little dance of frustration at this delay in his meal, but soon forgets himself; Lethe's little display of aggression is regarded by Cadence as flabbergasting and rather fascinating. He had turned about and only just then noticed her, and my! How silly she looks, he thinks, and steps delicately around his chosen to sniff at Lethe as if he cannot understand what she is making a fuss about. He's a Guardian! She's a Guardian! What is there to be wary of? They should play! If he can get close enough, he may very well lick the top of her head, as if to reassure her that all is well.

Lethe narrowed her eyes and when he came close enough, her teeth snapped together with an audible click. She had just missed him, but that did not seem to deter her. Indeed, she looked inclined to try again. However, Faye lay a calming hand on her back, staying her from actively going after the older guardian or his chosen. Of course, she was still liable to snap if anyone came close enough.

Although she was still naturally suspicious, Faye found it difficult to continue being too wary of the man: he was too silly to be really intimidating. When he called her beautiful, though, that was the end of it. Blushing fiercely, she mumbled, "I really look Aireish?"

"Aye!" Macaire seems surprised that she should ask, as if it is perfectly plain, something that cannot or should not be denied. But he smiles again, to soften any hurt she might take from his quick response, and taps his chest with an air of authority. "Oi'm ainly a year gone from me home there, sae ye can trust me words and me eyes. Me name's Macaire, Macaire Draughn: born in a wee likkle town called Skibbereen. What is it a bonny lass like ye be called?"

Cadence regards the other Guardian with an expression of shock, his long ears flattened against his skull: he stays out of reach for a long moment. As Macaire speaks to Faye, however, he lowers his head and leans towards her again, as if hoping she might at any second change her mind and make friends.

Faye blinked, startled at his quick affirmation. Having no memory of Aireland, and never having really known any other Aireish folk, she had no basis of comparison. However, she found that the idea did not displease her. In fact, she was pleased enough to offer him a tentative smile as she gave him her name. "Faye Donohue."

If it were possible, Lethe's ears flattened even more as Cadence tried to reach out to her once more. The little fawn did not seem the least bit inclined to make friends, though only heaven knew why.

"Ah, and see, ye doubted it! 'Tis a roight Aireish naming, that. An auld family, ye O’Donnchadha -- they be like me family, auld warriors." He savors the old surname, rolling it around in his mouth like a sweet: if she's met in her life the sort that are called to the teaching professions, she will hear something in his voice of that passion for learning. He could, given the slightest hint that it would be welcome, go on for hours. Fortunately, he seems aware that this may not be the correct audience for scholarly discourse, cutting himself off before he can make her weary of his friendship already. Instead, he ruffles a hand through his tousled hair, leaving it even more a mess than before.

"Be mair full of honor then me name, oi'll tell ye that! Me family be a fair set smaller. Ye donnae have the knowing of which branch ye be off'n, do ye?" He sounds as if he does not expect her to -- she doesn't even know she looks Aireish! -- and as if it is no big deal if she does not. In truth he is sad for her if this proves to be the case, but what is there that can be done if that's true? Either her parents are no longer about, or they're ashamed of what they are.

For a moment, she finds herself both amused and oddly comforted by the familiar fervency of his words. He sounded just like the professor on a favorite topic and she cannot help but feeling a little endeared toward the man. However, when the meaning behind his words sunk in a moment later, she felt the oddest sensation: an almost out-of-breath feeling of anticipation. It took a moment more for her to identify it because she did not often associate it with random conversations with strangers, but there was really no denying it. What she was feeling was an intense longing, an almost gnawing hunger to learn more, to hear anything and everything that this man could tell her about her family.

Faye wilted slightly at his question and shook her head. She did not even remember her parents' names, let alone any of her other relatives. Still, she wondered where they were or if they missed her. Did her family even know her parents were dead? Had they tried looking? The girl suddenly found herself with more questions about her past than she usually dared allow herself, and all because of this man!

She turns her big brown eyes upon him, unaware that they look sad and desperately hopeful all at once. "Could you...do you think you could help me?" Though Faye does not really think there is anything he can do, she cannot help but ask. He is the first person she has met that has known anything at all about her heritage, and he knew more than she could ever have guessed herself.

He'll swear to her -- years from now, when she's old enough to understand the feeling -- that anyone listening closely at this particularly moment would have been able to hear his heart give a great big crack! Her big eyes wobbling up at him are more than enough to fair break his heart, but her piteous request .. oh! Small gods have pity on him!

She'll see his eyes go wide with a moment's shock, though his expression softens immediately after; he breathes out a long slow sigh and nods before he can find the words to speak. " .. aye, lass. Of course oi'll help ye. B'ain't ye a countrywoman of mine? Yer me kin, in a way, and 'tis honor-bound that oi do whatever io can fer ye."

Her eyes went near as wide as his for a second before she grinned radiantly at him. All those year later, after he makes his confession, Faye might be able to sympathize with Macaire and the seemingly impossible quest that he has taken upon himself in order to spare the hopes of a little girl, but right then she was only filled with the exuberant joy that only the very young can truly experience.

"Really? You'll tell me all about them and help me find them and everything?" She could scarcely contain her excitement, and it was so contagious that even Lethe backed off of her perpetual glare at Cadence and wagged her tail at her chosen. Of course, any thoughts of what she would do after she found her family did not occur to her. The girl simply felt the longing of all who had lost their family to find them once more.

He winces for what his heart and his mouth have gotten him into, to hear her set her hopes and ambitions upon his shoulders -- Small Gods know there's enough on there already -- but rather than sigh or shake his head, he can only smile faintly at her. "Oi cannae promise oi'll find them for ye, but oi can promise oi'll try me best fer ye." He keeps his voice gentle but hopeful, for it all depends on how she came to be here, and what she might remember. And if, as she grows and learns, she can forgive him for not being able to provide her with everything she so ardently desires.

"It willnae be quick, though. Takes time, and careful asking of questions, aaaall about. Ye ke -- do ye unnerstand?" He is a touch anxious on this point, not wishing her to assume or expect a pair of loving parents to be produced on the morrow, or a week gone.

Completely unaware of their slight but significant miscommunication, it did not occur to Faye to mention that her parents were dead, and she was only hoping to learn of any grandparents or aunts or cousins she might have. Instead, she battled down her heady hope with a stern mind toughened by years of life on the streets. Even if Faye ever grew comfortable with her new station, it was unlikely that she would lose the instinct not to trust or hope too deeply.

The girl nodded gravely, her young face serious. "I understand." She may not have lived long with the professor, but she had been with him long enough already to know that research projects could take weeks and months and sometimes even years. And really, what was this if not a giant research project? One that the man could probably only look into in his spare time. Assuming that he was not lying to her and wasn't going to forget all about it as soon as they parted ways.

A slight frown creased her brow. Now that was an unhappy thought. She had best get what information she could while he was still in front of her in case she never saw him again. Even if he planned on forgetting about her, he still knew more about her family than anyone else she had ever met.

"Can you tall me about them? My family?"
PostPosted: Tue Dec 11, 2012 7:55 pm

He winces but she may be young enough not to interpret the expression clearly, for even he isn't sure what gives his heart the greater ache. Is she answering so tamely because her life has been rough enough that she does understand, or is he only raising her hopes beyond his capability of fulfilling them? Either way, he does have some of the knowledge she so ardently craves, and he does not intent to keep it from her for thought of her being too young to receive it.

"Oh, aye! They were nae my clan, so there is a muckle bit oi donnae know, but there's mair than a wee bit known tae them as were raised in Airelund. Here, lass, let's be off from the street for the telling, right?" He stands for the first time, and offers her his hand, well aware that even with all he's offered her there are some that would still not trust him enough for even that. But if she's the courage, he means only to lead her to a stall that sells bubbly little fruit pies -- where he will buy her one for each hand, and a little cup of juice, and then take her to sit on a bench outside a cookshop. There he can eat a fruit pie of his own, ingloriously licking his fingers, while Cadence eats flowers out of his lap and occasionally offers them to Lethe.

Although she eyed him suspiciously, Faye nonetheless followed him to the bake stand where, much to her delight, he bought her not one, but two delicious treats, and then sat her down outside, still in plain sight of the crowds. He was doing a great deal to make her comfortable with him, and even at her age, the effort did not entirely escape her. It did not make her trust him entirely, but it did not hurt, either.

Lethe eyed the other guardian even more suspiciously than her chosen had looked at Macaire, but when Cadence offered her a flower, she sniffed at its enticing aroma. Her ears swiveled forward and back in her indecision before she snatched it away from him.

Shuffling her feet idly, Faye looked up at Macaire, her eyes wide and curious. "So?"
