Welcome to the 大牌檔 Chinese New Year EventPART III (i) || FAMILIAR FOREIGN LANDSStart: Feb 25, 2012 || End: March 3, 2012 (approx)
Simultaneously, a legion of tiny black bats drop thick parchment-textured cards into each of the participants' hands. Each one is marked with the chinese character for "dragon" in hurried brush strokes with more text scrawled along the side, too small to read. It causes a tugging sensation and a sudden distorting of vision. Time and space seem to fold, realigning itself as each one is brought to the base of Tokyo Tower....however the tower isn't quite as it should be. It leans dangerously to the side, red paint chipped, and is overrun by thick vegetation. Just as the sun peeks over the horizon, it becomes clear that that all of New Tokyo has become covered in sprawling lush greenary. The city is eerily quiet - no running cars, no airplanes overhead, no chatter of businessmen travelling home from work....just a gaping emptiness punctuated by birdsong and the occasional sounds of creatures forraging in the shadows.
With a clap of thunder the dragon god appears in his dragon form, perching himself at the very tip of the faltering Tokyo Tower. "As expected, humans are inherently incapable of doing anything. Rather, you have only shown me that you are undeserving - not only of my favor but of this place we have given you.....so I have removed your kind and allowed Tokyo to flourish."
He pauses, pinning each of them with an appraising stare, "However, it is to your fortune that I have been convinced to give you another chance to prove yourselves. Find the 'key' and the 'door will open'." With that and another sudden clap of thunder, the god is gone.

EVENT SETTING The place the dragon god has transported everyone to looks to be a Tokyo 100 years in the future if human kind was completely wiped out. All the buildings have begun to sag and deteriorate from the neglect and many are completely covered by thick, jungle-like vegetation with some areas of the city completely flooded. Without the threat of humans, many of the native animals have migrated into the city - bears, leopards, deer, birds, etc. now making use of the abandoned buildings.
TASKFind the "Key" by using the random number generator once a day! This part is a meta rp event!
►Above all, do NOT tag the Dragon God / mods directly when posting ►Use "Post Action" to generate a number from: 1 (lowest) to 200 (highest) ►Generate a number only ONCE per day with one of your rp posts. We recommend a minimum of 250 words in this post. NOTE: you may make more than 1 rp post a day!! (the focus is to rp, not just to get the highest number! Interaction with other characters is encouraged ♥) ►At the end of the week (March 3), the person who generated the highest number overall will have found the "key" (and the second half of Part III will start)

Bats. Zave didn't dislike the little buggers but he didn't really find any joy in having them in his face. The man had all but shouted with surprise and literally knee-jerked in his reaction, his knee colliding underneath the table he'd been seated at and throwing him off balance. With one shocked look at the parchment dropped and a slick scrape of metal against concrete, the rain won out again and Zave lost his balance, careening over onto his back, the small table sailing outward as his foot caught the lip of it. It was a horrible clatter and the young man wasn't entirely sure he could have possibly been any more dejected and mortally embarrassed as he was in that moment, but yet again, he was about to be proven wrong. Scrambling for the paper left, he opened it hastily to see what it was about as people began to move towards him -- and that was it. One minute he was enjoying a hot cup of tea in the sopping scenery of Shinjuku, and the next he found himself teetering on the brink of what he could only assume was the destruction of everything he knew.
Still disorientated from yet another warp spell and his back still singing with the pain of meeting unyielding concrete, this one seemed to take a lot more out of him, teetering and gripping the dilapidated railing near by to keep from keeling over entirely. Zave was exhausted: from the meeting of a Dragon God on the shore to the wild run through the marketplace to his current position, the scholarly man was utterly wiped out emotionally. Even the Dragon God's callous words did little to stir anything but a faint spark of annoyance in him, turning his back to the building and sitting down slowly to survey the land. You can't just wipe out a whole race, Zave reasoned inwardly, quirking his lips as he took off his glasses and tried to wipe them clean against his yet-soaked garments, and then pretend that we're its last hope. He reasoned that the Deity was simply trying to yet again get a rise out of them, maybe playing some sort of sadistic game, but the man was not going to be conned into losing his cool. Well played, abandoning us in such a desolate arena. Very well, let's move these pieces around the board again.
Sighing, he got to his feet with a little effort thanks to the pain and his general worn-out feeling, looking around warily to see who else had joined him - and what type of shape they were in. If they were angry or motley again, he'd just as soon start exploring on his own. As far as he was concerned, he'd already seen what the group was capable of when together -- and relying on those with such a pessimistic outlook could not serve well for any of them. He felt he could trust perhaps one or two, but even then he was direly uncertain of what path to take now. Zave hadn't sought the Dragon God's blessing and his attempt to seek out the missing hairpin had been half-hearted at best; what, then, was he to think now, that their punishment for not doing well enough was the end of humanity itself? Supposedly, he added on with a tired smile, his own wit dry at best just then. Placing his glasses back against the bridge of his nose to better view those around him, he was minutely relieved that at least they were out of the torrential downpour. He wasn't sure his shoes would ever be dry again, and his socks felt like they were going to fuse with his skin at any given moment.
For once, Zave wished he had enough backbone to shout some sort of obscenity at his predicament. Alas, all he could do was stick his hands in his soaked trouser pockets and flick his eyes about with patience to see what would happen next, wishing sorely he hadn't parted with his pocket watch after all. Maybe his grandfather wouldn't be so proud now, seeing the young man in such a disgraceful state. Zave shook his head to himself and sighed again, turning his cerulean eyes out over the horrific landscape once more. "A key to locate in an entire city owned by Mother Nature." Pausing, he chuckled to himself. "I might be calling off work tomorrow..."

“Hey Travis, look!” Lucy pointed to the bats that entered the church. “How did they get in here?” Lucy asked as she took a step closer to them. She was compelled by them. She hadn’t seen live ones up close except for the zoo before.
A small bat, with little difficulty in carrying the slip of paper, dropped it on top of Lucy’s head. It bounced off and fell to the ground as the bat flapped its wings to depart. Bending over, she plucked it off the church’s pew and opened it. Lucy could read simple Chinese characters, but with such a mess of ink, she simply couldn’t be decisive about what the word was. Regardless, she examined it in the light and touched the texture of the surface. It just looked like a simple piece of paper. That is… Until she found herself feeling beyond being simply drunk. In a flurry of lights and sounds, she was knocked out.
Lucy fell with a hard thud to the ground. Her tailbone hurt from the sudden impact to the dirt ground. Even though this was the second time of the night, she would never get used to this teleporting thing. Her head throbbed mercilessly that she could feel the pain even without being conscious.
When she came to her five senses, she looked around frantically. Travis. Her first thought. Where was Travis. Where was the church? Where were the bats, the lights, the bustling people? Where was she and how long had she been lying there? The voice of the dragon god boomed, hinting to them towards a key of some sorts. Although there wasn’t much success with the pin, perhaps the key would be an easier task. Before anyone could have any more information, he had disappeared as mysteriously as when he first appeared. At the God's disappointment, she had wondered if things would turn out differently if she hadn't wasted so much time getting lost.
Around her was botany. Everywhere. It was absolutely beautiful. It was as though she was at the lost city of the Mayans, only it was Tokyo. She resisted the urge to take photos, notes and samples back to discuss with her professor. With first things first, she had to go find Travis and make sure he was okay. She didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to him. Secondly the key and thirdly the notes. No matter how tempted she was to fall to her knees and pick up leaves and rocks of the sort. She headed off in any direction, keeping an eye out for Travis or anything resembling a key or a magical door.

Gregory no longer knew where he was. After wandering around in Shinjuku for what felt like hours, and he was surprised that the sun wasn't starting to rise already, every street began looking the same as all the other streets. He couldn't tell one from another, and he had exhausted any leads, true or false, that he had come across during that time. Part of him thought he started wandering in useless circles.
He sat down on the curb of one street, ignoring the looks of passersby who probably wondered what was wrong with him. Gregory didn't care about them. Rubbing his face in his hands, he was cold and tired and wet. Had anyone found the jade hairpin? Was anyone even close to finding it? Then he heard it. The flutter of noise of winged creature overhead. Gregory lifted his head and looked up to see something flying above him. Was that a bat? Something drifted down lazily from the sky. Standing up, Gregory caught the paper from the air. Something tugged at him, a strange sensation, as the world distorted before his eyes.
Gregory blinked several times, thinking his eyes to be playing tricks on him. The world, while looking somewhat familiar, looked completely foreign now. He could recognize buildings, or some of them, but everything was overgrown with plants. It looked like people hadn't lived here for decades. His jaw dropped as he scanned the area. What was going on here? Where were they now?
What? he thought outraged when he heard the Dragon God's words. The Dragon God had removed their kind? Wiped out the humans? How could he do something like that? What kind of game was he playing at here? What did he expect them to do to appease him?
Gregory rubbed at his temples, feeling a headache pounding at his skull. He heard someone speaking and wandered around until he found the speaker (Zave). He chuckled lightly at the comment he overheard. "I guess I didn't have to worry so much about that assignment due tomorrow," he said. After all that had happened so far this night, it seemed silly to have been stressing over getting the report finished.

Jonathan stood with other 'contestants' there on the street. He was just as puzzled as the rest of them to see the swarm of bats approach. He didn't fear the creatures and give the amount of weird s**t that's already happened, he simply rolled with it. Reaching out, he took the card that was given to him and cocked his head to the side. He tried squinting to read the writing upon the side but couldn't make it out. It was much too small to read and straining his eyes wouldn't make a difference. But as he looked up, a startled gasp escaped his lips. He never felt the warping pull as he had been so engrossed in the letters, but he quickly noticed how the scenery changed.
Just what happened to New Tokyo?! It was like a movie scene after some great devastation or war. Except this wasn't a movie, and the dragon god confirmed this by explaining the removal of human kind. Was he serious? He had to be joking... How the hell could he just remove people so carelessly? Those people had lives, families, loved ones they'd never see again. Even his own mother and father were now gone. It was all rather depressing to think about. Those innocent people who had no idea of the Dragon God's existence didn't deserve to be erased as if they were a mistake. Although the human species had several issues like war and hate crimes, that was no grounds for complete eradication.
"Prove ourselves he says. Find the key he says." Jon muttered as he stuffed the piece of parchment into his pocket. He didn't care what happened to himself, but he'd be damned if he'd let innocent families and children lose their chance to live because of an inconsiderate Dragon God. He'd find this key for those people that didn't have a chance to prove themselves 'worthy.'
Glancing up what used to be a main street, the man gave off a small sigh. It was going to be impossible to just stroll up the street now. Vegetation completely overtook the street! It looked like a jungle... which meant, it was probably dangerous to walk alone. He didn't mind going alone, and he did lose track of his new acquaintances back in their present time. Oh well, for now he'd go it alone and just hope his imitation survival skills would keep him alive. If he put his mind to it, he could figure out any problem!
Strolling over to a near by building, he selected a rather large rock from the ground. He weighed it and gave a light toss in the air for a test on... well, he just tossed it. There really wasn't any other reason than to look cool if someone was watching. But it seemed heavy enough. Turning to the building, he threw the rock at the large glass window. He was honestly surprised the glass had survived the decades of abuse and smiled at the sound it made. Nothing was more fun than breaking a pane of glass. But he wasn't doing this for no reason, the reason rather important. He needed a quick and handy blade, and glass was so easy to shatter. The make shift machete would work against the foliage.
And so, this new adventurer began his journey into the untamed wilds. With his glass blade in hand, the man began to cut through the thick plants and venture further in. Man, if the mosquitoes were bad back then, he'd hate to find some now... the thought of a swarm just caused him to shiver. Gross. Too bad he wasn't mentally prepared for any surprise large animals, that thought never crossed his mind yet. He'll just have to think fast if anything tries to eat his face in the near future.

Shui Yun had not had time to think when the sky darkened once more. But instead of a torrent of rain, what occurred was decidedly worse. A swarm of tiny bats; each no larger than the palm of his hand blotted the night sky like the advent of some horrible Dracula out of an old movie. And in that confusion and chaos, a small parchment was dropped onto Shui Yun’s astonished head by a particularly spastic specimen of a bat. Flailing slightly Shui Yun grabbed the paper out of reflex and no sooner had he done so, the familiar sensation of being warped returned. Staggering under the horrible sensation (it was not unlike the feeling one got when one turned around and around and around before falling down with dizziness as a kid), Shui Yun did not particularly appreciate the sight of the dragon god (in his dragon form no less) glaring down at them.
But what was even more astonishing was what the Dragon God had to say.
Shui Yun could not believe what he was hearing. Did …the… Dragon God…seriously…wiped out …the human race…because they were not able to find his missing hairpiece?
“For the love of-,”
A cry if indignancy barely escaped his lips when the Dragon God uttered the second part of his speech.
"However, it is to your fortune that I have been convinced to give you another chance to prove yourselves.Find the 'key' and the 'door will open'."
So this was just another game to the deity huh? It was not unlike the Greek Gods of old; the ones that took particular pleasure in meddling with the lives of humans, sinking their ships, turning their daughters into cows…that sort of thing. Shui Yu was no master in greek mythology but he had heard enough as a child to know how fickle the gods could sometimes be.
This one seemed no different for as soon as its speech was delivered, it disappeared with a flashy clap of thunder.

(( To Gregory ))
The sound of a chuckle snagged Zave's attention, prompting him to turn and look at the owner of the mirth. He was surprised to see the black-haired man -- he'd seen him by the beach but he didn't recall the other joining in on the God-hating festivities. He appeared to be about the same age as he, slender like himself but with the hair style and the cool green eyes, Zave felt strangely as though he was back in high school for a moment, like he was the nerd dealing with one of the upper crust kids which was strictly unheard of. Shaking off the notion with a small smile, he offered a helpless shrug of his shoulders to the bemused comment. "It doesn't seem like anyone is going to hold you accountable for that," he responded with a good-natured smile. "I think you're off the hook right now."
Ah, that...that was nice. A little humor in such a dire circumstance seemed a little terrifying at the absurdity of it but what else did they have to keep them going? Zave had refused to be ruled by fear years ago and in the face of a petulant God, he wasn't going to change his ways. The Dragon was awe-inspiring, if not a little scary, but he didn't hold a candle to his old man. Pulling a hand out of his pocket, he started to offer it to the black-haired man before hesitating and withdrawing it slowly again. He was still soaking wet and he didn't want to offer his damp skin for a polite gesture. "A-ah, forgive me, I didn't get out of that rain in Shinjuku fast enough," he muttered in an embarrassed manner, looking down as his damp clothing, running the hand instead through his drying hair before pushing his glasses back up his nose with his middle finger. Giving the other a smile instead, he stuck his hand back in his pocket. "I'm Zave." He rocked back on his heels for a second, always trying to be friendly and polite but yet still stricken with a shyness of dealing with someone in his age bracket. It wasn't so bad when he was teaching - that was a mixed bag of ages - but he was never really good at social bonding.
"It's nice to meet you, even if our circumstances are less than nice." The scribe sighed heavily once more, his smile a little lop-sided. If this one still seemed friendly enough, maybe they could get a start on looking for that key. He wasn't keen on hanging around for idle chitchat, not in a world that didn't need them anymore than the God that put them there.

Lucy shoved the small slip of paper into the pocket of her shorts where her heating stone was kept safe. It was a single indication of her being alive and conscious. The small, continuous warmth pressed against her thigh softly. She carefully stepped around the vegetation as well as making sure she wasn't squishing any poor helpless bug. She just wanted to kick off her heels and walk barefooted through the jungle-like mess, but knew it to be a bad idea lest she step on something poisonous or venomous.
Making her way around debris and buildings, she tried to recognize what each building was. It was hard to tell when plants reigned over their concrete structures. Although the forest was thick, the sun still shone through the leaves just a tad. It was much nicer than walking around Shinjuku at night, that’s for sure. The dragon god’s words repeated in her mind over and over again. ’Am I really in the future? Does that mean everyone I once knew is…’ she swallowed hard, not wanting to think of the next word. She kept her eyes peeled for clues or things to help her. Rusted old automobiles and doors pulled off the hinges by vines and who knows what weren’t that much of a help.
Continuing on, she noticed something peculiar. A path. But it wasn’t an abandoned bike path or path of dirt. It was of cut down ferns and small plants, laying out a perfect path. The cuts were clean, showing no signs of being snapped or chewed up. She furrowed her eyebrows and made a small frown. Deciding to follow it, she looked up the cleared way and ran quickly. Her logic went kind of like this, if she was walking at the same speed as whoever or whatever was making the path, she’d never catch up. Sprinting as quick as she could in heels, she saw something… brown hair
"Travis!" She ran up to the man who she thought was her travel companion. "Am I glad to see you! The church disappeared and the bats came by and the dragon god said we were in the future and I don't even know where we are right now." Words spilled out of her mouth, half of them slurred with the next due to sheer exhaustion from the hunt earlier.
After catching her breath, she said in a relieved tone, "I'm just glad to see you,” to the back of the man’s head.

(( To Zave ))
It surprised him that the words left his mouth so easily. Usually, Gregory found it difficult to speak comfortably with strangers. It was part of the reason that he dreaded having his band mates drag him out for the evening, unless it was to a gig. He rubbed the back of his neck as he gazed down at the ground, hoping to hide some of his embarrassment. "I sure hope not," he said, encouraged to continue speaking by the man's smile. "I don't think my teacher would believe any of this. Though maybe she would give me credit for thinking up something more creative than the usual 'my dog ate my homework' excuse."
As he mostly stood on the outer circle when everyone gathered on the beach, he hadn't gotten a very good look at all the people surrounding the Dragon God at that time. Gregory tried to remember if he had seen this man before but couldn't place him. He looked to be about the same age, which put Gregory a little more at ease. It didn't completely erase the stiffness that sneaked up on all too often while around other people. He knew at any moment he would trip over something - or even nothing at all - or do something equally embarrassing because of his clumsiness.
A smile twitched at his lips. He reached up and shook out his bangs, knocking loose some of the remaining droplets of rain clinging to their strands. "I didn't quite make it out of the rain either," he admitted then tugged at his damp shirt that clung uncomfortably to his skin. "I'm Gre - Lu - er," he stumbled over the names before letting out a frustrate growl. After a sigh, he started again, "Well, publicly, I go by Luca. Suppose to sound cool." He shrugged. Giving their current situation, he didn't think it would matter too much if he let this man know the truth. "But my real name is Gregory."
"I suppose it could be worse, though maybe I shouldn't say anything that might tempt that Dragon God into making things harder on us." Gregory glanced around like he expected the world to shift into some nightmarish vision. Part of him wanted to believe that the Dragon God was leading them on a wild goose chase that was impossible for them to succeed at. "Do you have any thoughts where to start looking for this 'key' thing?"
