nuan ling has, ever since the day he's become humanoid, been interested in everything that goes on around him. he'll go after a butterfly, a mouse, or even spend hours at the local library just reading and reading and reading. he hasn't learned how to use a computer yet, and mei-xing doesn't necessarily trust him with her baby, so he hasn't had access to the internet yet. maybe..that's a good thing? nuan ling loves to learn new things, and will often ask many question when presented with something that he doesn't recognize. this can be slightly annoying at times, but mei-xing finds it rather cute. luckily, curiosity didn't kill the panda.
sociable
he absolutely loves to be around others, even if he doesn't know them, so mei-xing has developed a habit of simply walking around town with the panda, showing him the sights and keeping him entertained. he is much like a child in the aspect that he has no concept of the fact that you probably shouldn't talk to strangers, especially those who look busy, but he's learning. he won't, at this point, go up to just anyone, but it still happens more than mei-xing would like.
slovenly
when he's not walking around town or spending countless hours researching things, nuan ling really just enjoys staying home and lounging about, much like a sloth instead of a panda. he'll often take naps randomly through the day, and may be borderline narcoleptic, especially in the mornings and evenings. he is not an early bird or a night owl, so don't expect him to enjoy getting up early or to be able to stay awake for hours on end once the sun goes down. however, he seems unable to sleep without holding onto something or someone, so mei-xing has bought him many large stuffed animals to take the place of another body, simply for convenience.

nuan ling is almost always smiling. it takes quite a bit to upset him, as he is a bit of an eternal optimist, so he'll most likely do
everything with a smile on his face. he has said before that he doesn't like the feel of a frown on his face, the way the muscles
have to move to make one, so he tries to avoid it. he'll often be the one to cheer mei-xing up during a long work session, which
may not necessarily be a good thing, as it often results in her having to really buckle down in order to finish on time, as she gets
distracted by him. but he really means well, honest; he just doesn't understand that she needs to budget her time wisely.
peaceful
true to the common conception of a panda, nuan ling is very calm. he rarely gets upset or angry about anything, and is generally
very easy-going and "zen." he'll often be smiling, simply content, and is very relaxed as a whole. he often tries to get others to be
this way, as well, as he believes that it is not good to be constantly hyped up or angry or stressed or anything else; just be..calm.
breathe. he's recently taken up meditation as a hobby, and usually does it when he has nothing else that he wants to do at that
moment. however, that's not to say that he never gets upset; everyone does. the easiest way to freak him out is to use violence or
loud noises of any kind. he can be slightly skittish, but only when startled or scared.
likes
at the moment, it is difficult to tell what, exactly, nuan likes. he seems to enjoy following mei-xing absolutely everywhere, and rarely strays far from her side. mei-xing thinks that he actually likes scaring her by appearing at random times in strange places.
dislikes
nuan does not seem fond of extremely bright lights.
fears
fire seems to frighten the little shadow, as mei-xing has discovered whenever she decides to burn a candle in the apartment.
history
nuan ling was given to mei-xing on an unseasonably warm autumn night in the shinjuku district. she found the little tea stall by chance, and recognized the chinese writing on its sign. the mysterious man who worked there handed her a cup of tea and sent her about her way, and her life has never been the same.
a while ago, the curious little teacup transformed into a moving, "talking" shadow in the form of a panda. mei-xing, still not completely at ease with this new development, named the thing nuan ling, meaning "warm spirit" in chinese. he seems relatively friendly at this point, if a bit clingy. he also has a habit of calling her "mama," which she isn't sure how she feels about. twenty-seven seems a bit young, in her mind, to be considered a mother. but, she supposes, it's a perfectly fine age for someone who has settled down by now. she hasn't, which is perhaps why she is uncertain about it. however, she doesn't seem to have the initiative to tell him to stop.

the giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central china, mainly in sichuan province, but also in the shaanxi and gansu provinces. due to farming, deforestation and other development, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived.
the panda is a conservation reliant endangered species. a 2007 report shows 239 pandas living in captivity inside china and another 27 outside the country. wild population estimates vary; one estimate shows that there are about 1,590 individuals living in the wild, while a 2006 study via dna analysis estimated that this figure could be as high as 2,000 to 3,000. some reports also show that the number of pandas in the wild is on the rise. however, the iucn does not believe there is enough certainty yet to reclassify the species from endangered to vulnerable.
while the dragon has historically served as china's national emblem, in recent decades the panda has also served as an emblem for the country. its image appears on a large number of modern Chinese commemorative silver, gold, and platinum coins. though the panda is often assumed to be docile, it has been known to attack humans, presumably out of irritation rather than predation.

mei-xing never had problems in school. she was always the top student in her class, and, despite a few instances of self-doubt, tried her best. she is not necessarily naturally gifted, in her opinion, and thinks that she got where she is today through hard work and perseverance. it's not that she necessarily enjoys school, but she also had no true reason to hate it other than the sheer amount of work that she placed on herself. she often bit off more than she could chew, but always managed to get it done.
reserved
she is never the person to strike up a conversation. she often prefers to be a bit of a wall-flower, and will usually only speak if spoken to. she doesn't mind talking to people, in fact she loves it. she likes to be in social situations, but she doesn't enjoy being the center of attention in the slightest. because of this, despite her many achievements in school, she has always wanted to stay below the radar. that's not to say that she doesn't distinguish herself; she just doesn't brag about her achievements. she's always scolded herself for being so shy, and hopes someday to be able to get over that.
sarcastic
once she opens up to you, mei-xing is very funny and vibrant. she has a rather sarcastic sense of humor, with a bit of darkness thrown in, but she is never outright mean or spiteful with anything that she says - at least out loud, that is. she'll often make jokes with a straight face and poke fun at the "brain farts" of others, or even her own, but she never takes it to a level of outright making fun of them. she always apologizes if it is taken the wrong way, and tries her best to explain that she was only joking and it was all in fun.
scatterbrained
despite her intense focus in school and work, mei-xing is actually very forgetful in her everyday life. she'll forget to take out the trash or do laundry, or sometimes even have a good meal every now and then. she gets so focused on one thing that she almost completely forgets about everything else, and she often finds herself being reminded by others that she should really get these things done. these things that she forgets, mind you, are never vitally important to survival (excluding eating, of course), just simple things that she should really do every day.
emotional
almost everything that mei-xing does is influenced by her emotions. she cries on a regular basis, and often scolds herself for being a crybaby, and reading books, watching musics, listening to music, and anything else remotely related will change her mood quite a bit. she cries during almost every movie she watches, happy or sad, and many of her decisions can be a bit rash, and are often highly emotion-based. she may say things in the heat of the moment that she would otherwise keep to herself, and she often cries when she becomes angry, but it could be because she's embarrassed about something that she said. she often gets into a vicious cycle of crying in public, and then becoming embarrassed by this, and then simply crying more because of her embarrassment. she does have the ability to think rationally, but she really has to focus and calm down first.
likes
she actually likes a great many things, but her favorite things are scary movies on a stormy night, hot beverages (namely peppermint tea), cozy sweatshirts/sweaters, and techno music.
dislikes
mei-xing hates to be cold, or too warm, so there's a delicate balance to be found (once it's found, however, she'll most likely fall asleep). she hates mushy foods, unless it's oatmeal, and rather prefers her meals to have some texture. she doesn't like the rain, as it usually entails either cold weather or mugginess, which is never good for her hair. she hates getting up early, as well, and is much more of a night owl.
fears
she's always been afraid of the dark, but it's that special kind of darkness when you can't see anything. if it's just dark and she can still make out shapes, she'll probably be fine. but it can get to the point where she'll just curl up and cry, because she hates the unknown. she also has a fear of falling from great heights, not necessarily the heights themselves. she actually likes flying and great views, but once she looks down for too long, she'll become an anxious mess.
history
ever since she was little, mei-xing has loved animals. she grew up with pets her entire life, and never had to go a single month without some sort of non-human creature in the household. this love of animals inspired her, even from a very young age, to desire to become a veterinarian. mind you, she could never have actually performed surgery on an animal; she just doesn't have the stomach for the gore that comes with that. so she decided to explore other options, and eventually discovered a love for literature. all throughout her life, however, she has always kept that soft spot for animals, and would often bring home any stray that she happened to find, begging her parents to let her keep it. they would only occasionally say yes, depending on how many animals they already had at the time.
she lived in Beijing, China, having been born there, and had never set foot outside the country in her life until she went off to college. through hard work and determination, two things that she became incredibly good at over the years, she was accepted into tokyo university, and had learned to speak japanese fluently over the years with the hope of someday attending this school. so, divided from her parents by a body of water, and living on her own for the first time in her life, mei-xing became...quite lonely. the dormitories did not allow pets larger than those that could fit in a small tank, which barred all of her favorite household pets, namely cats and dogs. she regularly tortured herself when she had free time by strolling by pet shops and fantasizing about being able to have a pet, and what kind she would get, and generally getting way too attached to things that she could not have. she managed to get a part-time job in a nearby pet store, so she at least had the opportunity to be around animals, but it still was not as much as she wanted. After four years in college, she graduated and moved out on her own, managing to find an apartment relatively close to where she had interned later in her school life: a publishing company.
this company decided to hire her as a full-time editor in their literature department, and put her in charge of an author. unfortunately, this author was notorious for being late in regards to his deadlines, and was most likely the one no one wanted to work with. so, the unwanted job fell naturally on the newbie. she doesn't really mind it; she gets free access to all the books she works on and that are published by the company, so she always has reading material, but this leaves her with little free time. she has begun to draw into herself again, focusing only on work and largely ignoring the social side of life. while on a stroll through a market in the shinjuku district, a quiet-looking setup drew her attention, and everything changed from there.
