Personality: A lively young fellow, Hwan-jae doesn't seem to stop moving ever. He is friendly, talkative and borderline hyper-active. His strength is in his optimism and zest for life but on the flip side he comes across as somewhat of an idiot and not serious. However, when it comes to important things like survival and aiding others he is capable of focusing and helping out in a pinch. He is twins with Jeong-jae and the two are very close and often bother people together so watch out! Between the two of them, he is the more reckless and curious one easy to trick or coax into doing something.
Unfortunately, his pride is his main downfall. He is overly confident and has trouble recognizing when he's gotten in over his head until after he's trapped. He is more immature than he'd like to admit and has trouble letting go of things like grudges or crushes. He very much wears his heart on his sleeve, the good and the bad emotions alike, and can be a bit of a handful because of this. When he is angry, he gets very aggressive and confrontational before sulking off to be alone or with his brother who is generally the best person to calm him down. If someone upsets or hurts him, he will make his feelings heard loud and clear before giving the person the silent treatment (until an apology is issued or he gets over it which does happen occasionally). He easily forgives but rarely forgets. He easily apologizes for his own actions as well as his intentions are never to hurt and he has come to recognize that what he considers good fun is not always well received.
Hwan-jae has a big heart and a carefree nature from a mostly happy childhood. The two twins have a younger sister, ten year old Yoon-su, and shower her with affection and attention when they have time. He has enjoyed watching her grow and go through life and hopes to lead the way by setting a good example although perhaps he is not as good a role model as he thinks!
History: The Ryom family lived in the small town of Bindau located inside Wall Maria. The mother was a butcher while the father worked as a manual laborer around the town, helping out on farms during the harvests and aiding construction at other times. The family was blessed with three energetic children, the two oldest twin boys Hwan-jae and Jeong-jae and their younger sister Yoon-su. For many years they lived happily and while not the most financially stable, they rarely went hungry. However, the small town was quiet, a little too quiet for the restless Hwan-jae and he longed to visit the larger cities with all kinds of interesting new things to see and do. In between chores, he and his brother did reckless things like climbing the rooftops or attempting to build a tree-house hideout to liven up their lives but these adventures often ended badly.
Just after turning seventeen, Hwan-jae lost both parents in a heavy storm as a tree landed on their house and the two were crushed. Left with no one to support them and a younger sister to care for, Hwan-jae panicked as the two had no real skills or talents to pick up a profession. The remaining townsfolk did their best to look after the three siblings but the financial burden was tough and Hwan-jae seemed to struggle with the daily reminders around the town of his parents. Jeong-jae suggested relocating to Trost to find their old relative Aunt Won-jin to get back on their feet with a fresh start. It seemed a better idea than sticking around Bindau and the three began the expensive immigration process to through Wall Rose with the remainder of their inheritance.
Contact with Aunt Won-jin had fizzled out the last three years and the twins only had her last letter with an address to search for. They looked for about a month before giving up, not realizing that she had moved to Chlorba since their last correspondence. Their savings spent and even more competition to find jobs, the two older boys decided their last hope was to join the military as a guaranteed steady income. Yoon-su was too young to join and secretly, Hwan-jae was glad for it. She was still young and pure and he felt the military would force her to grow up even faster than she already had and the twins decided to pay for her to attend a boarding academy in Trost. The hope was that she would grow up more educated than either of them and be able to get a better life with a higher set of skills.
The parting was bittersweet but Hwan-jae took comfort knowing Trost is only a day or so away from the academy so checking in on her wouldn't be too difficult.
Other: The twins are completely identical and can usually only be told apart by their choice of clothes. Hwan-jae claims to be the older twin but they both joke about that so no one knows for sure and nobody ever gets a straight answer. Yoon-su claims to know but she shares their mischievous streak and refuses to answer when asked.
Hwan-jae's hobbies include long walks, playing games with others (highly active games like sports or playful things like hide-and-seek or capture-the-flag) and butting into other peoples' business. He also enjoys the occasional dart game but is not very good at it so watch out!
