To the naked eye, nothing would seem amiss. All was normal as it should be, routines and day to day events transpiring without a hitch with the sun shining brazenly, and birds caroling blissfully. So many were oblivious and deaf to the cries for help and pleas of distress that came from the bottom dwellers of society; Those who were hardly given the time of day. Snubbed, ignored, shoved out of the way, they were seen nothing more than nuisances by the common folk.

But darkness was looming in the crevices of the slums, where the poor resided, spreading like a plague, and infecting the various family's. Disappearances were occurring. But not just any kind of disappearances, these were very specific, very particular, as children and degenerates were the sole targets. Brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, the ill, and homeless being plucked from the dumps that were their homes, to be toted away to a location unknown.

Not many spoke up about it, knowing full well how they would not be acknowledged, or their calls for help heard on sound ears. And so they mourned in silence, frightened, keeping a tighter hold on the younglings, and adults doing what they could to try and keep the youths safe.

However...

A single girl dared to step from the shadows of the decrepit, and neglected alleys that lead from her home in the slumworld. She stepped into the light of the world above, eyes sparkling and twinkling with the shedding of fresh tears, redness clinging underneath with an accent of puffiness. Her voice was small and timid at first, hesitant and stammering her request to those that passed by along the streets. She was ignored. Passed by as though she weren't even there. Even as she raised her voice,

"Please! Please won't someone help me!" she would cry desperately, a grungy tiny hand reaching out to grab a passing mans jacket corner, in hopes it may gain his attention. This was a mistake that cost her a slap across her face, and a shock to her system. Don't encourage the scum, they would whisper; give in once and you'll be mobbed by the rest. You can't help them all. The whispers burned harder than the slap.

Trembling lightly from the impact, she fought back the tears that threatened to stain her dirtied cheeks again, and rather than retreat, she pushed on, her voice easily heard, but never heeded.

Run down
Something fishy's going on, in the slums of Shiganshina... there's been a numerous amount of disappearances, that have gone on unnoticed for quite some time. There were so many in the slums that had no friends or family left to even notice their disappearance. It wasn't even brought to the rest of the citizens' attention until rumors of children going missing pulled what few bits of sympathy it could.

- Your objective is to gather clues and idea's about what's been going on. Civilians are welcomed allowed to participate!

- Your character currently knows nothing about the disappearances until they hear from the young girl, or speak with her. Once they enter into this rp they are free to be able to hear her from then on, as she is calling out for help and voicing her distress.

- Your character is free to ask around as well, but please be sure to quote me with either [Speaking with: little girl] or [Speaking with: passerby/citizen/etc.]. However, currently those besides the little girl will not be very helpful in providing you with answers.

- Every three or four days there will be a new updated prompt for you.

- You are encouraged to interact with one another.

- You're free to jump in at any portion of the rp as you'd like. Your character can come and go freely, so long as you make sure to catch up prompts wise, and get back in to pick up on what ever is the recent prompt/update.

- Any questions, please PM me!

This portion of the event will end on August 30th at 11:59PM EDT

{ side note: I'm going to be gone for a few hours this evening, so I'll be a bit delayed getting responses to those quoting me. I apologize! I'll be able to respond to them later tonight though! }

[Speaking with: The asshat and the little girl]

User ImageAmalia Stern was walking through Shiganshina, looking for a cake shop she had heard about after conveniently "forgetting" to tell Yesenia where she was going. Her friend was probably looking around for her in Trost, but the green haired woman didn't care. It was good to get away from the antics of Yesenia once in a while.

"Please! Please won't someone help me!"

Amalia turned towards the sound of the young girl's voice, seeing a girl grabbing a man by the coat. Her temper flared as she saw the man slap her away. Regardless of what anyone else thought, that s**t was not going to fly. As the little girl pressed on, Amalia made a beeline for the man, cutting him off. With a snarl, she grabbed him by the collar and pulled his face into hers. "What the <********> is your problem, huh? That little girl is looking for help and you just ******** slap her? What if it was your own damn daughter, huh, you asshat?" She pulled her free hand into a fist and brought it up to his face menacingly, but then thought better of it. He wasn't worth it. Not yet.

She let go of his collar and shoved him away with a quiet "Go ******** yourself." and turned towards where the girl had left to. Jogging up to her, she called out to the little girl. "Hey. Is there something I can help with...?"

[Speaking with: Little girl]

Her eyes were like thorns; piercing glints of silver against the angle of shadow she was shrouded under. She curled herself in tighter, fighting back tears from the throbbing sting in her left cheek and the simmering anger wavering her bosom. Adalwolfa was tired of this life; tired of the toil required of her in the slums of Shingashina. Bowing to the sun to earn a pittance from sunrise to sunset, bowing her head to her the man she was forced to serve because she lived under his roof -- she wanted to walk with her chin held high again and let the world know she was to be feared. She was a Westhofen, a noble name from the great wall of Sina whose stare could bring the impoverish to their knees. But now, she was simply known as Franziska -- the false name to a peasant girl who had to willingly accept any abuse from the farmer she worked for just for her daily bread.

Coarse, calloused hands hugged her knees closer to her chin and a deep breath followed, the smell of the great unwashed that lingered like a fog amidst the slums filling her lungs like the last breath she'd ever take. Adalwolfa knew she had to return to her duties as a farmhand eventually, but she found herself struck with a fear of being hurt again. That man -- her superior -- did not hold back, not when it came to her or the other girls. She had the urge to run and never return, but knew that if she did, she'd become the victim of starvation or of a man who fancied young girls who didn't have the strength to fight back. The only place she felt safe was there under the loom of a building and hidden behind an empty crate. If the option to stay there for an eternity was open, she would, but that choice was soon deterred when she raised her head.

A child...?

Adalwolfa peeked from behind the wooden box to catch the last bits of the girl's cries. She was reflexively to her feet when the man dared to lay a hand on her; to which she shot in a surprisingly quick flash of grey to her aid. The noble daughter wasn't quick enough, however; the man had already sauntered off before she had a chance to confront him and return the pain he inflicted in full. Her face tightened in a hard glare at the ground.

"Tch..." the sixteen year old spat to herself, before turning on her heel and looking to the girl with soft, somber eyes.

Children were her weakness. While she felt herself much to young to be a mother, they strummed a warming note on her heartstrings. To her, no child -- boy or girl -- deserved to suffer the realities of starvation and tainted touches. Unfortunately, that was the existence she lived in, and it soured her realization each day when she saw young souls walk about begging with soulless eyes.

"Are you alright?" she asked the girl gently as she searched her pockets for a stained handkerchief and pressed it to her struck cheek. "Does it hurt much?"

[Speaking with: little girl]

It had been a long time since they'd passed this way. He'd always longed to visit the city when he was younger but it had only been as a teen that the twins had finally seen the place. The decision to come back here was filled with conflicting emotions but they were already here in Shiganshina and it would feel pathetic to leave now. It'd been two days travel by foot to get here and it had all been for one clear objective.

"I wonder what she'll name it?" Hwan mused out loud as the travelers marched on through the streets. His legs ached from the long journey here but surprisingly they weren't as pained as he'd thought they'd be. The heavy training was doing its job toughening him up and the boy resolved to keep it up. He'd never been out of shape exactly but his heightened athleticism paired with his high energy were a wondrous combination and lately he'd been feeling nearly invincible.

Alongside him was his brother Jeong and their new friend Larisa. Letters from Yoon-su had practically seeped with loneliness lately and after some discussion, they'd come to the solution that their sister simply needed to move closer and had almost started on building a cabin for her in the Peace Garden. More practical minds had intervened and suggested they buy her a pet. So now, after pooling their wages for a few weeks, they were here to meet with a well established vendor to investigate his wares. The only problem was, they'd only been to Shiganshina for a week previously to hole up while the paperwork for their immigration went through and despite his attempts to pretend like he still knew the city (to impress Jeong mostly), Hwan had no idea where they were going. Somehow the buildings were looking dingier and dingier though.

"Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not entirely sure I know where we are." A loud cry echoed suddenly and he jumped. Geez, he hadn't thought they were in that much trouble. Realizing it hadn't been Larisa after all, concerned brown eyes scanned the area for the source of the distress. It sounded like a young girl and that stirred serious concern in him. That could've been Yoon-su at one time had they not managed to get her to Trost, to safety. He would've wanted strangers to step in and help her if she'd been crying.

"Jeong!" He missed seeing the slap from the angle they were at but it would've been impossible not to hear it. Anger boiled up inside him as he and his brother closed in like a pack of predators ready to take down their target but the man managed to slip away before they pushed their way over. His heart continued to beat furiously in his chest until the 'gentleman' was out of sight. Faintly, he heard a familiar voice and looked to see Amalia and a silver haired lady tending to the young girl.

"Hey, what happened here? Let us help you." Adalwolfa dried the girl's cheeks with a soft touch but Hwan and his party drew closer anyways even if the conflict was seemingly over. The girl wasn't in the best of shape and he wondered if they ought to offer her some of their travel rations. He glanced to his brother wordlessly as if to ask. Though the two were incredibly talkative usually, other times they managed to communicate silently in the way that close siblings do.

[Speaking with: little girl]

"I can't wait to see her face." Jeong grinned as the twins discussed their gift. Yoon-su was at that age where she was still a child but just beginning to grow into a pre-teen. It was an awkward time and full of mood swings but she'd managed to get started without any meltdowns or episodes so far. A part of him nagged that he should be there more for her but they'd already signed the contract. He glanced at the edges of the street, keeping an eye out for any shifty people out of concern for his companions but kept quiet about his worries. Jeong was also trying to figure out where the hell Hwan was leading them but knew not to question about it in front of their new friend.

"Great-" He groaned as Hwan finally admitted they were lost before the conversation was cut off with a cry. Jerking to look for the source, his eyes had trouble narrowing in on things until the second sound of a slap clued him in. Pushing through the crowded street, the boys dashed over to find Amalia and a silver haired girl checking over a young child.

"What's going on here?" Hwan's look did not go unnoticed and Jeong pulled out his water canteen to offer to the crying child as she looked like she needed help calming down from whatever was bothering her. He wasn't sure who'd hit the girl but now that they were all here things could be sorted out safely. Letting her take a drink, he also produced a small light cookie as she looked like she lived on the street and probably didn't have reliable access to food.

"Do you still have any fruit?" He asked Larisa, the last member of their trio. Naturally sweet and filling, it might help cheer the girl up a little and get her through the next day. He didn't know how else to help besides this small donation.

The middle aged, gruff man was flabberghasted, that much was clear. His wide set eyes peeled open far more than they probably had in the past few years of skin caving in on them, with wrinkles written all over his aged features. A wince was made when the fist was aimed right for him, eyes clamping tight, only to peel open very hesitantly as he felt no contact. The girls threat made him grumble, and shake off her hold on him, with a 'tch', before continuing on his way... mumbling something about the youths these days.

Sniffling softly, the young girl rubbed the heel of her palm into her eye to keep the tears from budding more with frustration. Why would no one listen to her? At the sound of the more footsteps approaching, she quickly turned her attention to see a green-haired woman stand up to the man so fearlessly! Struck with awe for a moment, she looked to Adalwolfa when prompted while the rude man was being dealt with. A few more sniffles snuck up on her as she quickly tried to wipe her tears away with the backs of her hands, giving pause when that soft fabric pressed to her face. Calming considerably, a faint smile managed to raise on her dirtied face, "Th-thank you.." she timidly replied, voice soft, and almost uncertain. As Amalia and a matching pair of boys crowded near her too, the girl felt a flush of embarrassment burn along her cheeks and prickle the bridge of her nose. She wasn't used to so much attention on her! But... they seemed interested. Maybe they could help!

"I thank you, miss, for.. what you did." her attention was aimed at Amalia now, smile able to lift a bit more despite her fluster. And as she looked to the rest of those drawn near, the little girl did the best she could to gain her bearings. There was no time to waste, after all! "Well you see.. I.. haven't been able to find any of my friends, lately." she quietly began, "It... was just one of them, at first, but... now almost all but one aren't home anymore." cracked, dried lips pressed together nervously, tiny grundgy hands balling into fists as she clutched her worn dress, "their... their families don't know where they are, either.."

Amalia cast a glare at the back of the retreating man. Part of her was really wishing she had hit him now, after meeting the girl herself. She was so polite - what the ******** was his problem? "Don't worry about it, kid." She listened intently to the girl's tale. Turning to the others, she shook her head. "Any of you got any idea what might be goin' on? I'm from Trost, so I dunno if this is supposed to be an everyday occurrence or some s**t." She really hoped it wasn't, because this girl didn't deserve it to be.

[Speaking with: little girl]

Larisa laughed as she walked alongside the boys, amused not for the first time by how excited they were to get their sister the perfect little pet. It was such a sweet thing to do for her, and really Larisa was a little touched that they'd wanted her along for the trip. It was too bad she didn't know Yoon-su, or she could've offered up her own opinions on what the girl might like, but even without that knowledge she had a feeling anything they picked would be loved. Maybe she could find something to buy to send to her own family while they were here. She didn't have as much saved up, but if she saw something...

As she looked around to see if that something was visible at that very moment, she realized belatedly that their environment had become less, well, safe-looking. Uneasy, she edged in a little closer to her new friends, looking this way and that at the others walking by. She'd been so preoccupied thinking about gifts, she'd barely even noticed all the people around, but this was a little- A cry went up just as Hwan-jae admitted they were lost, and Larisa startled. It had sounded like a little girl, was she hurt? And was that, had someone slapped her?

There was a surge of worry and outrage and then more worry, but she hurried over after the twins to see how she could help. A couple of others had gotten there before them, a silver haired girl and green-haired one she immediately recognized as one of their fellow trainees. She hesitated, taking in the scene, then nodded to Jeong-jae and knelt by the girl to offer up what was left of her fruit. "There's not much left, but you can have as much as you like, alright?"

Then she leaned back a little to listen, fingers worrying at the hem of a sleeve as the girl spoke. "Their parents don't know either?" That was even worse than she'd thought. For a moment she'd hoped they might be able to find her friends if they found their parents. While she considered that, she glanced up at Amalia to shake her head regretfully. "This is my first time in Shiganshina..." The twins had been here before, she knew, but considering how lost they'd gotten, probably didn't know it as well as they'd led her believe. So then...

Larisa looked back to the girl, ready to ask another question, and then faltered as she realized she was still thinking of her as 'the girl'. "I'm Larisa, by the way, and this is Hwan-jae, Jeong-jae," oh she really hoped she'd pointed to the right ones, "Amalia, and..." She paused, then gave a small, apologetic smile as she reached Adawolfa. "Oh! I, um, I don't know your name, I'm sorry." Embarrassed, it took her a moment to get back on track, but then she was right back to smiling as reassuringly at the girl as she could. "We'll do our best to help you, okay?"

Maybe it was a little presumptuous to speak for everyone, but she figured they'd all run over here to help to begin with. Hopefully no one would be annoyed with her for it. "So first things first, what should we call you? And then, um, maybe you could tell us if you and friends noticed anything weird going on around the city before they disappeared?"

[Speaking with: little girl]

"No, we don't know anything either. Could you tell us more about the disappearances? How long ago they happened and if anything unusual's been going on around town?" Jeong-jae shook his head in response to Amalia's inquiry and before turning to ask the girl. Then he quieted down and let Larisa make all the introductions, also hoping to learn names before they continued further. It wasn't unheard of for members of the poor class to go mysteriously missing but he was concerned that the young girl made it sound like it was mostly children.

"Tell us everything you know, maybe we can help you." Brown eyes glimmered with determination. He knew better than to make any promises but hoped to help this girl get a happy ending to this story, even if it meant they'd have to run around the streets all night.

musicaloner7
About what age does the little girl appear? Is she about six years old or more like nine? An age range guesstimate is okay.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 20, 2014 10:36 pm

[Speaking with: little girl]

"We'll find your friends... don't worry." The idea of a freak going around kidnapping small children didn't sit well with him. He spoke firmly to the young girl pausing only when he realized she hadn't given her name yet and he finished his sentence a little lamely. Still, his heart was in the right place. Even if he was committing to something way over his head. Part of him wanted to demand to see the remaining friend she had left to protect them but he knew it wasn't a good plan to recover those already taken. They had to do more than just prevent new victims; they had to rescue the already wronged.

"Has anything happened to you recently?" It was possible the girl herself had been targeted and barely escaped before the predator could strike. "Anyone in the slums that doesn't quite fit in? Someone out of place." Asking if anyone shady hung out in the slums would be like asking if birds lived in the woods. There were some honest decent people living in the poor districts, sure, but it wasn't uncommon to find drunks, thieves and other low-lifes.

This didn't sound like the work of any ordinary criminal.

[Speaking to: The little girl]

Shun had heard some of the rumors regarding disappearances in Shinganshina, though he honestly didn't really think too much of it at the time. People vanishing in the slums wasn't exactly something new. Most of the time, it meant they either died of starvation, illness, or maybe even due to some sort of confrontation in the streets.

He took notice of the small group that had gathered around a small girl. Several trainees seemed to be questioning her, and something about vanishing family members.

"Any known enemies? It's possible they could have just been killed," he bluntly remarked.

Calming down considerably with the crowd she'd manage to draw to her, which also made others in the slummy road look over curiously, the young girl went a little quiet as she gathered her thoughts. A small, shy smile was aimed towards those presenting her with the fruit, to which she accepted tenderly with a very quiet "Thank you". The way she ate it, you'd think the poor thing hadn't eaten in days! But that wasn't much a surprise, given where she lived...

Lightly gripping the fruit in her small palm, the girl stared at the ground between her barren, dirty feet, toes curling. These... were so many questions. And really, the young lass didn't know the answers to most of them. But, she did her best to muster up the gist of what she did know to provide for the kind volunteers.

"W-well..." she began timidly at first, "I really don't know that much. But... I know that some of my friends weren't showing up to play, a few days ago." her brows knit, as she struggled to find an exact timeframe... "I.. I don't know how many days ago, but more than three days ago, for sure. We always meet up to play, and... if not, well. We go visit those who aren't there." she paused, distress starting to etch its way along her youthful face, "When those of us left started to go and see where the others were, their family's were crying, and... really sad." her hands fisted tighter against her chest, "each day, more would be gone... even ones who had played with us yesterday before dinner... some of them didn't show up this morning."

Her eyes started to gloss with the fresh sheen of waterworks that threatened to start. "I-I... have seen a few men I've never seen before, but... I don't know who would want to do anything to us.." her voice was a bit wavery with the influence of her growing emotions. Rubbing at one of her eyes, she looked up to those around her, "I know that some of the grown ups know stuff, but... they won't tell me. Like Old Barb. She knows everything that goes on here." perking up slightly, as she remembered, the little one tried to put on a smile, despite her shrinking mood, "I'm Roxanne. Roxy, for short." clasping her hands together, once she was able to contain herself from falling into the control of her worries, a look was spared to each person who had approached her in aid, "Would... would you guys maybe.. talk to Old Barb..? She's not very nice, and hates us kids... but.. I think she might know lots that I don't! Please..." going around once more to look at everyone, she took a few bold steps out from the cluster, to try and gain their help without a response given from them. "She lives just down this way." a hand was raised, and a short little finger pointed down the grungy, more narrow street that lead onto deeper paths splitting into the belly of the slums. "I'm sure you guys can do it!" the girl piped up once more, before starting off on her way to lead the gathered group, wasting no time in waiting for their verdicts. This was her only chance to try and get answers!

Racing down the worn down streets skillfully, Roxy would pause at each turn, or intersection to make sure the pack kept with her. The homes and shelters were all dingy and tired, but plenty done up and repaired in some places with obvious care with what was available. Eventually Roxy stopped a few paces off from a specific house. It was smashed between a makeshift shelter, and a run-down old complex. The tightly hugged home was like a cabin of sorts, one room easily confirmed, with a rickety patio out front. On it, rocking leisurely on a rather sturdy, strong rocking chair, was Old Barb. She was a wrinkled, crotchety, and intimidating old lady, whose long silver hair was kept in a messy bun, draped with loose tendrils and fly aways every which way, and framing her sunken face. Her hard, deep brown eyes kept a fierce stare, unwavering, and surprisingly bright with life, at those who came and went. They would slowly slide to watch their prey, honing in on the sudden appearance of the unknown group... locking onto them like a vicegrip.

A chill visibly ran down Roxy's back, making the girl backpeddle a bit, and look behind her to those she'd gathered. "That's her..." the girl whispered nervously. There was no one else in the street besides the older woman, and them, but the tension and atmosphere was heavy just by here mere presence. One could say that an invisible sign was stationed there saying "Guard Dog: Approach with Caution."

update!

Boss battle!

Ok not really, but there will be a little work to get information out of this old woman. She's quite stubborn, after all, and doesn't take kindly to strangers, or those she finds annoying.

- You are free to approach Old Barb when ever you'd like. There are some homes nearby that you can try knocking on to see if anyone's home. Please indicate who/what you're interacting with, using "[ Interacting with: Old Barb/Roxy/a home nearby/ etc. ]" at the top of your post.

- When interacting with Old Barb, you will need to roll one die with ten sides. This will be to gauge your "effectiveness" in getting answers out of her. The higher the roll, the more effective you are in persuading her, as well as the more information you'll get. The lower the roll, the less, and possibly even no information will be given to you!

- You can only roll to interact with Old Barb once she has answered your first/previous question. So you can't keep rolling until she answers what you've already asked her.

- Feel free to interact with one another to exchange information, and ideas!

- As always, PM me with questions!

- side note: Old Barb does have some "weaknesses" as well as strong dislikes. Should she see/hear something she does or does not like from your character, she can take, or increase the points of your roll!

[Interacting with: Old Barb]

Amalia listened to Roxy's story, furious at whoever would disrupt such a kind girl's life. She decided that she wasn't going to leave until she found out who was responsible and kicked the s**t out of them. The green haired woman followed Roxy, along with the rest of the group, to an old lady. Old Barb sat like a gargoyle, watching and glaring at the group. Amalia was the first to step forward, ruffling the little girl's hair as she went, completely ignoring the ominous feeling hanging over the area like a death mist. "Hey. You know anything about the kids that've been goin' missing?"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 23, 2014 11:27 am

[Speaking with: Roxy]

"Good luck, Amalia." Jeong-jae nodded to the green haired girl, hoping she would manage to get some information from Old Barb. He wanted to go and help but still had a few questions for Roxy to answer as well. Amalia was a tough girl and would be able to handle the old woman for now and report back to them what she'd found out. If she could handle the spontaneity of Yesenia, she could adapt to try and deal with whatever the kid-hating woman might say or do. Barb looked equally stubborn but Amalia looked more pissed off right now, not that he could blame her. Sometimes one questioned what was going on with humanity these days.

"Roxy, you mentioned some strange men? Tell me more about them, everything you can remember. Their clothes, appearance, what they were doing that made you notice them." Looking back into Roxy's eyes, Jeong-jae kept a light smile to try and keep the child calm. She looked about the same age as Yoon Su, his sister, and it pained him to see how differently they were living. This is how things could've turned out if they hadn't gotten their acts together and joined the military to provide for her. Internally vowing to try and help this child until she got some closure, he swallowed and waited for her answer.

With a light grunt, Shun listened to Roxy, then followed her to the old woman who apparently might know a thing to two. He looked her over and gave Amalia a glance before stepping forward.

"Oi. Whose territory is this? Gang-wise."
