The song was an old one, loud and raucous, and picked up by a half dozen voices -- but, as ever, Paul was the epicenter, deep into his cups and still wielding something strong in his right hand. On its surface, the song was one of wolves, with a refrain that focused on chasing one's own tail...but this was the sort of song you only sang in Plumb's, as 'chasing your own tail' was likely code for something else entirely.

Maybe Paul didn't know that. He had his arm over a young soldier, his cravat loosened to make it easier to breathe, his head thrown back, and his companion laughed out lough when Paul's voice raised over all the others in the chorus.

He was making a scene. He often made a scene when he was in Palisade, now, as if to catch up for all the time spent in the countryside. And Paul simply didn't care.

At a corner table, a young nobleman was nursing the same drink he had started the evening out with. This was not to say that he was cheap. Indeed, he had quite the fortune to his name and he was not miserly. Instead, he simply took care not to lose his wits. It did not pay to be careless in his position.

His companion - or rather, one of his informants - had just left and now Kit found himself alone. He considered going home, but found that he was not in the mood for solitude just yet. So, he took another sip of his wine and tapped his foot to the raucous song. Though he was not participating in the song, he was watching the singers with an easygoing smile. One in particular was especially lively, his slightly off-tune crooning audible over the other voices. It was this man that he focused on.

The drunken singer's face was a familiar one inasmuch as a stranger who frequented the same club could be considered familiar. The spy knew him to be fond of drink and gambling alike, and perhaps he was a little more careless than one in his position ought to be, but the extent of his knowledge ended there. Despite similar status, their social circles did not often intersect. Kit leaned carelessly back in his chair, wondering whether it was time to change that.

It was possible, somewhere in the back of his mind, Kit would pull up something else about Paul, or perhaps it would come up upon hearing his name: Samael.

It wasn't that Paul flaunted his Guardian or his Choosing, not that he loudly proclaimed his adventures in the Wardwood. He never brought Samael into the city, instead letting him roam the country estate or the surrounding area, and never staying for more than a day or two. However, he didn't hide him, either, and as he turned around -- well. People asked.

What brought about this change of heart?

What has happened to you recently?

Why are you only here two or three times a month, instead of every weekend?

And in response to these questions, he let it slip more than once:

Oh. Well. My Guardian...

Even now, his choice of song, one of wolves, was telling in its way. It drew to a halt with Paul grinning ear to ear, still leaning into the handsome soldier with a bit too much familiarity. They would simply attribute it to the drink, and that was what kept Paul out of trouble.

The crowd broke up, men returning to their games and their drink, retreating in laughing groups. Eventually Paul was left alone, deposited in a chair to loosen his cravat and try to catch his breath, the room still spinning around him.

As the strains of conversation drifted to him, Kit eyed the man with renewed interest. Of course. How could he have forgotten. Paul was one of those rumored to possess a deer - a guardian, if such a thing could be believed. Then again, no one that he knew of had actually seen the fabled buck. Still. The novelty alone was enough to make him curious.

At worst, he will have wasted an empty evening on a wild goose chase. At best, he will have gleaned valuable information from the man. Kit debated the wisdom of giving the man another drink - he really did look like he just might pass out with a few more sips - but ultimately shrugged and made a stop at the bar on his way over.

He set the drink in front of the man and settled himself in the chair across from him.

"Good evening," he said. "I don't think we've had the pleasure of meeting before. I'm Kit Blackthorn."

A true gentleman might have eyed the drink and made sure it was his favorite brew, might have tasted it and wondered, would have at least mentioned their preferences. Paul, however, lacked the class to care what was in the drink. Instead he grinned up at Kit, a wide flash of teeth, careless and amused. His cheeks were pink, a flush that crept down his throat, and his eyes somewhat feverish.

"Kit, my good fellow! A pleasure." He did, at least, halfway bow from his chair before grabbing the drink. Kit had brought him more alcohol. Hard to object to that. Paul raised it in his honor.

"Paul Blaire." Elsewhere, of course, there were titles attached to the name -- but in here, it was just Paul Blaire. Let them worry about that another time. He drank.

"The pleasure's all mine, I'm sure," he demurred with a half-bow of his own. If he had not been able to tell just how drunk the man was by his behavior or the number of empty glasses before him, the smell would certainly have been a good indicator. But he had smelled much worse from other...acquaintances in the past. He did not even wrinkle his nose.

"I keep seeing you here, but we've never spoken. Seemed time to fix that." See? No pretense here. Just honest and straight to the point. Nothing hidden. Nothing at all. There really was an art to deception. The science was nine parts truth, one part falsehood, but the art, well, that was all in the way it was carried out. It took a certain finesse. Of course, Kit really was being straightforward tonight. For the most part. He would be perfectly forthright about what he wanted to talk about, he simply wouldn't mention every little detain of his motivation.

"Though I do admit," he continued. "I haven't seen you here as often of late."

Paul, with his cravat loosened, slumped back in the chair and long legs stretched out in front of him, even still looked the part of a noble. Other men might have looked the scoundrel, but something about Paul's face completely eliminated the possibility. Too soft. Too relaxed. He blinked at Kit in an entirely guileless way, and tipped his head to the side.

"Oh. Well, the country estate..." He gestured with his drink as he said it, a careless gesture that didn't-quite spill alcohol all over the floor around him. Paul pulled it back quickly to take another sip, to lower the liquid level, to make it less likely.

"Things have been falling apart for years, and now I am finally getting them sorted, what with Samael and all...." It trailed off absently, but there was that feverish look in his eyes. It invited the question.

When the other man relaxed, Kit lounged in his own chair, looking like nothing so much as an over-grown cat. He crossed his ankles and took another sip, ignoring his companion's behavior.

"Yes," he agreed. "They can be difficult to manage from town."

When Paul continued, however, Kit offered him an obviously expected expression of curious interest. The man obviously wanted to talk. Who was he to deny such a thing?

"And who is this Samael to have such an influence on you?"

Kit looked like a lounging cat; Paul looked like exactly what he was -- a noble with more money than sense, a flighty creature who could easily serve as the canary. And, most likely, had in the past. After all, someone must have made off with the majority of his estate, to leave it in its current [mending] state of disrepair...

He played at casual, strumming fingers against his cup -- "Oh. Yes. Well, my Guardian."

But he watched Kit out of the corner of his eyes as he said it, and was entirely too pleased with himself. It wasn't bragging. Not exactly. But it was a good shove in the face to everyone who'd ever told him he couldn't amount to anything. Or that he was wasting his life.

There had been enough of those.

Kit raised his brow. "Is that so?"

At least the rumors had been confirmed by the object of them. Of course, there was no real proof without the guardian in question, but it was something.

There was every possibility that there was no guardian at all. Or, even if there was, it could just be a deer. There were clever animals to be found in the Wardwood. It was not impossible that Paul had found one and raised it, deciding to call it a guardian to attract attention to himself. Admittedly, it did seem unlikely. This foppish nobleman did not strike Kit as the type to care about animals...or much of anything but himself, really. At the very least, Paul did not seem likely to go to the bother of taming a wild animal.

The alternative, however, seemed less likely. A true guardian? A beast from old legends some to life? The spy was admittedly dubious. Even assuming guardians did exist, why would one choose Paul of all people?

"I've heard the stories, of course, but I've never seen one myself. Where is this guardian of yours?"

"He prefers the country house." This, though, at last came with a fading of his expression, a softening of that heat behind his eyes. Sorry, almost, that this was so -- because it would have been easier, perhaps, were he able to haul Samael into the city and live his life as it had been. Not that his Guardian would ever allow that. Samael was too serious for these kinds of games, too noble to disappear into the background.

Paul shook his head, brushing hair back out of his eyes, and sipped his drink. "He manages."

((Sorry for delay, have been flu'd. crying ))

"More's the pity," he said. Paul sounded like a man tied to his estate by his bride, though considerably less happy about the fact than a new husband might have been.

Regardless, it looked like Kit would have no definitive proof that the man did, in fact, have a guardian. A disappointment, but he would just have to live with it.

"But apparently you can at least visit town, with or without him. He doesn't need your attention?"

((No worries. Being sick has that effect.))

"I'll be back out there day after tomorrow." This came with a slow sigh, some of his bright expression fading out. He considered for a moment before taking another long gulp of his drink, one shoulder raised as he did, trying to think.

"...I have been...considering..." It was easier said than done. He'd had enough, now, that he was sloshed, that words blurred together in his head. "An event. Hunting. Not sure. Before it gets too cold."

It wasn't quite an invitation out, but it was close.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 13, 2012 9:56 pm

"Oh?" Kit took another sip of his drink, wondering how much longer until the man passed out and he was out of a conversation partner.

"That sounds like a fine sport." Not precisely a lie. He had never much cared for hunting himself, but he knew that most found it enjoyable enough. To him, such an event would be more about the socialization. It was amazing what one could learn during a hunt.

"At your estate, I assume?" A chance to meet the alleged guardian, if he were to go. Assuming that the mention of the event could be interpreted as an invitation. Though he did have to wonder about a chosen hunting for deer. Seemed a bit...odd, to put it lightly. Perhaps he intended a hunt for fowl or fox.

"I have the space, there." And, he didn't say it, but he thought -- well, now the place was in shape enough for company, perhaps. So long as it was rustic company; certain of his acquaintances would be horrified by the shutters that clattered in the wind, in the skeleton staff, in the understocked kitchens. Paul brushed fingers across his mouth as he thought it, and finally set the drink aside. He felt numb around the edges. Probably should stop.

"My father used to hold hunts." Some might remember it, but likely not many, his father dead long enough to fade out of memory. Paul shrugged, crookedly, and reached up to loosen his cravat. "I don't have the experience, though."
