So the story goes....

Not long after Touching, three Candidates - two friends, Okassis the trader and Sovann the seaholder, and Inaari the Cotholder's daughter - began debating the way to make the best cup of klah. Okassis, having traveled all over, claimed that he knew how to make a sort of "klah with a kick" - whereas the resident kitchen girl was sure that her klah was already as good as it got, despite the boys' having already tried and stuck up their noses at her mix. They decided to settle the dispute like civilized folk, and hold a contest at breakfast-time the following day to let the folk of the Weyr decide.

Rumors had begun circulating rapidly among the Candidates (fueled in large part thanks to our own Nandeli "the Nose"), and in the fertile ground of anxiety and anticipation in the Lower Caverns, the competition quickly grew into a topic of much speculation. In the course of one day, the excitement even inched its way to the rest of the Weyrfolk - there's no one except-Okassis-himself that doesn't like a good cup of klah in the morning, after all, and what if there really was a better cup than what they were getting served?

Between the rumors and the active recruitment efforts of the competitors, a number of taste-testers among the Candidates found the prospect intriguing enough to put their taste buds on the line; and, more surprising, a few dragonriders as well. There's rumors that even the Candidatemaster himself will be participating, to show his support before the upcoming Hatching! For a simple contest, in the span of a single day, this sure has caused a lot of buzz within the Weyr; but would the secret "kick" be worth it, giving Sovann and Okassis the attention and respect they craved? Was young Inaari, little-noticed and under-appreciated, going to get her chance to shine with her practice-perfected klah? Would the kitchen staff chortle when the regular klah won out over all the upstarts? And what about....

OOC: The competition is an open roleplay to all approved characters within the shop! The roleplay is not participation-required - your character can wander out whenever they feel like - except for testers, who should at least be present long enough to try each sort of klah and cast their vote by putting a single pebble into the dish in front of the pot of their choice. (Okassis is watching very closely to make sure there are no cheaters, so only one pebble per character!)

It is planned to end either Friday or Saturday night, but will go longer if it is necessary (but it shouldn't be, really guys, it's just a fun little get-together.) There's no posting order, no rules on what your character can or cannot do; be reasonable, and have fun!

As characters come in and/or volunteer, they will be added to the Master List:

Competitors: Okassis and Sovann vs. Inaari
Commentator: Nandeli "the Nose"
Taste Testers: Candidatemaster, Davian, Davril, Zara, Kiriwar, Jiriar, Erisi, S`kagi, Astrisabe, Govind, Aydin, Dusen, F`sey, Marko
Other/Observers: Jessmet, Nelioa, Elaeran, C`ym, Nessa, Kypak, H`dek

The Klah:

Pot #1 This klah is rich and flavorful, but strong enough to jump-start any taste buds into wakefulness. There's a myriad of tastes in it - heavily tasting of cinnamon and hazelnut, lighter hints of chocolate, snatches of coffee beneath the rest.

Pebbles in dish: o o o o

Pot #2 There's a unique flavor about this pot that's hard to put a name to. Earthy, if anything. It's a bit thick, and although unusually light on spice, there's a subtle complexity to its flavor that would elude even the most discerning of klah connoisseurs. More grit than usual is at the bottom of the pot, but this doesn't much wind up in cups to affect the taste.

Pebbles in dish: empty

Pot #3 This klah tastes... fishy. Very, very fishy. Not even delicately, "oh that's strange, there's an aldersmoked salmon hint", but it's like sucking down hot fish klah.
Bitter and black, hot and stimulating, tasting faintly of cinnamon and a bit of cocoa, faintly powdery. This pot tastes simple, not that simple's bad; more like a homebrew, that warm pot a wife might have heated up for her husband before he went to earn a living.
Pebbles in dish: o o

It was morning, and the kitchen cavern was ready to serve breakfast - the first few hungry souls were already entering, pausing to look in curiosity at the table set up near the entrance with three Candidates busily working the final touches. All three pots of klah - the boys' joint effort, Inaari's, and the regular kitchen staff's - had been prepared and set onto the table, unlabeled, with no clear way to tell which belonged to whom. Everything was ready, as perfect as it could be.

Satisfied, Okassis nodded to their arrangements. "All right, I think it's about ready." It had taken a lot of work to get all this together, but by the egg, would it be worth it! Flashing a grin to his comrades, he suggested, "we'd better get to serving this stuff up. May the best pot win!"

~*Catch a dream and turn it to an idea...

Now that the Touching had gone and passed, Kellar was glad to have finally gotten some sleep. The whole time, he stayed up thinking about the eggs and the dragonets, hoping that he would Impress durring the Hatching. He was glad that he could sleep last night and was really looking forward to a nice breakfast.

As he entered he slowed to a brief stop as he neared the kitchen cavern, eyeing the three pots of klah that set at a table inside. He could tell by the different scent from the pots that it wasn't the usual klah that was served every morning. Just the scent alone seemed to rid him of the usual morning drowsiness. He continued on his way, now interested in finding out why there were three different pots of klah. He decided he would ask the next person he saw what was going on.

The usually animated face of the young Cotholder was somewhat drawn and solemn at this starting point. Inaari was still fairly confident that her brilliant klah would win, especially as a good deal of the Weyr had been drinking it for awhile now. But there was that niggling doubt in the back of her mind, and it couldn't help but worry at the edges of that confidence.

Pulling the scarf from her hair, it tumbled in a wheaten honey mass down over her shoulders. Stepping back and away from the table, she flipped it, tousled it, and threw it back over her shoulders. The blond wasn't beautiful, but she was pretty enough. When being seen by everyone, it was important to look her best! The peeling on her neck and the freckles were not a blemish on her looks, as her mother often worried. No, they were a happy part of her!

Rinsing her hands and wiping them before beaming over at Okassis, Inaari brought a tray of cups back over to the table, and turned them over, lining them up in even rows in front of each pot. Fifteen cups in front of each should be more than enough to start, and later, they could be swapped. She'd owe an extra shift to one of the women for washing the cups for her, but it would be worth it!

"Just fill them fairly evenly in the cups to the front of each pot. Everyone will pick one up, and we can replace the rows as they disappear!" Simple enough, not even those two could mess it up!

"Got it," Okassis agreed, turning to start filling cups. His attention was divided, though, just as interested in the crowds as in his work. Anytime that someone got too close, he'd grin and greet them, use that Trader swagger and charm to get them to buy in - like this young lad that was eying their layout with a proper curiosity....

"Hey there, you got a few seconds? We've got a bit of a contest going on here, and maybe you could help us settle it, eh?" Okassis asked Kellar, using that special boom that lifelong hawkers naturally acquired. "There's some freemarked klah in it for you if you'll give these three pots a taste for us, and vote the best!"

Nandeli was grinning from ear to ear as she practically skipped into the dining cavern. She'd been waiting for today to come for a long time, if how fast the news about the klah-off had been had been spread was any testament. Two boys, one girl, locked in a deep struggle for justice, honour, and the title of best klah maker ever. Okay maybe it wasn't that serious, but that was why Nan was here. She had to spice things up a little with her melodrama. That was her tagline after all. Nan the Nose: Spice of Life.

"Good morning competitors! Everybody sleep well last night?" She smiled her mega-watt grin at all of them as she made her way over to the table. Didn't they all just look so excited! As much as she would have loved to participate in this epic competition, she knew where her duties lay. Somebody had to be the commentator. Winking in the competitor's direction, Nan hopped up onto her assigned chair and spread her arms wide.

"Welcome, Candidates, Weyrfolk, riders and all! Do you think you've got what it takes to decide tell the klah of champions from its competition? Got a palette that's sure to rival the Master Vintner? Then step right up and have a taste of these carefully brewed klahs! Be the one to decide who takes the first place and who has to settle for second! And best of all, it's free! So what are you waiting for?"

Today was going to be totally awesome.

Perfect! Okassis grinned, watching as Nan clambered up in order to do what she did best. There was nothing that he couldn't appreciate about her flair for showmanship - there were more than a couple Holds he'd been selling in where he knew he could've used someone with lungs like hers to move goods. He didn't have any doubts: With the Nose on the case, they'd be pulling testers like flies to honey!

Flashing a grin towards Sovann, he continued the work of setting out hot mugs of klah for any brave taste-testers, taking care not to spill any. The last thing he needed was to cement his status as a klutz in front of Nan, after all. One was bad enough, thanks just the same.

Shaking her head at the incredibly loud girl she thought was named Nose (what were her parents thinking?!), Inaari simply counted in her head. Turning almost rapidly, she threw some words over her shoulder at the boys. "We're going to need more cups. If you two are going to have a shout-off as well, the whole Weyr is going to hear it!" Nervously, she squeezed the hem of her apron once in her hands, and then vanished back into the Lower Caverns' reaches.

In the back reaches near the storerooms, there was little activity for that moment, and Inaari was glad for it. She had hoped for a solitary moment outside, but with Sovann so adamant she learn his song, she hadn't had a moment alone all day to gather her thoughts.

Taking a deep breath, the young teenager started to pile cups up on a tray, focusing on the shape and steadiness. Her hands had none of the latter, and a soft series of clinks could be heard as the cups rattled together when placed.

Working her way back through the bustle of the morning shift, Inaari could only pray that they got a lot of people, and fast. She didn't want this to go on too long!

Kellar stopped in his tracks as soon as he realised Okassis was talking to him. He thought for a bit and then a warm smile spread across his face. "Sure, I'd love to try your klahs," he said in a fairly cheerful tone. He eyed the three pots, deciding on which one to try first. It wasn't long before he made his decision. Of course, he waited untill there was at least one cup in front of each pot before trying the cup of klah that coresponded with it. He chose a cup, blew on it a few times to cool down the liquid a bit-- a precaution that became an automatic habbit even for things that weren't even warm-- and then brought it to his lips and sipped. He quickly brought the cup back down, though not in displeasure. It was just that the rich flavor caught him off guard.

"Wow!" he said, blinking down at the cup. He took a few more sips and then finished it off. He then moved on to another cup, repeating his procedures to the sipping. He wasn't too fond of the thickness, but the flavor wasn't all too bad. After finishing that cup off, he moved onto the last pot. Bitter. Though his expression may have said otherwise, he was actually a bit fond of the bitter taste. It was simple and didn't overload his taste buds with multiple different flavores. As he finished it off, he could already feel himself getting a bit jittery.

"They're all really good!" he managed to say with a wide grin. He pondered over the different flavors he had just tasted and decided to place his vote on pot number... three! He thanked the brewers for letting him try some of their klah and wished all three the best of luck before heading to the table.

Shout-off? The whole Weyr would hear?

Okassis glanced at Nan, getting a mischievous crinkle in his eyes. And what would be wrong with that...? he wondered, drawing air into his lungs. He didn't have a chair to stand on, but he had enough power in his voice to draw attention nonetheless as he boomed out:

"Step up, Weyrladies, Weyrmen! Take your tastebuds to the test with these three carefully crafted Klah concoctions! Go ahead and speak up, and pick the best cup!"

Still smirking, he glanced back to the official commentator. Okassis never could back down from a chance to compete, and this was no exception, it seemed.

They were all very good? That must be a mistake, but Inaari stoutly refused to try the boys' klah until everything was said and done. And even then, she wasn't quite sure she wanted to try theirs anyway. It looked somewhat dangerous. Watching the stone go into the bowl for the normal klah, she tried to keep a straight face.

"Thank you for the compliment! And for voting, it's rather important to us." And it was! If she won, she might permanently be affixed to the morning shift, and that daily freedom was something that Inaari craved even more than recognition from the other Weyrfolk.

Pulling a bench closer to the table, she considered a bucket of water...and a good deal of cotton for her ears if those two were going to screech like that all day.

He considered coming here to this klah-off event (of sorts) was far better than anything else he could get roped into (except getting laid, but he didn't feel like that right now). Rumors about it had spread faster than dragon fire eating up Thread, and Erisi really couldn't miss the opportunity to be somewhat social. Besides, he knew for certain that some of his friends would be showing up, so it made the venture to the klah-off a little more worthwhile. Personally, he didn't expect the klah to be much of anything special. It was just a bunch of silly candidates craving the attention they thought they deserved. So, while he would let his taste buds suffer, he'd at least get the pleasure of sifting through the room and talking to a few of the friends he had made.

As he approached the gathered group of weyrfolk, he very vaguely grimaced at the sound of Nandeli's voice. Faranth, that woman was worse than any plague, if only because she couldn't keep her mouth shut, and while Erisi had no personal encounters with her, he had heard enough to stay away. Really, he was beginning to think it would be best to have some klah and flee. His light blue eyes swept over the people gathered, and not yet seeing anyone he recognized, he decided to do the taste-testing thing before he could get hounded into the act. Really, he didn't want Nandeli screeching into his ear, nor did he want the proud brewers hovering over him proclaiming praises for their own klah.

Right, get this done and over with already.

He went to the first line of cups, snatching one up and bringing it to his lips to steal a first, tentative taste. It wasn't horrible, and the taste of chocolate rolled pleasantly upon his tongue. But it was a little sharp, and made him openly wince, placing the cup to the side unfinished. On to the next one, which he sipped with more open tentativeness, and if anything this was immediately placed back down as well. It was too thick, and he didn't want to feel as if he were choking on his drink. The third one he came to also seemed to sting his taste buds unpleasantly. At least it was better than the middle one, though he put it down almost as quickly as the first two cups.

Faranth, he could flip a coin and have that be his deciding factor between the first and the third. But almost carelessly he flipped a pebble into the first dish, and that was that. He immediately moved away from the tasting table, if only to avoid getting plagued by people he'd thoroughly enjoy not meeting.

The dark haired girl had come to the event to stem off the growing feeling of bordom that had lingered about her all day long. It was one of those days that no matter what she came up with for entertainment didnt seem to work. She had even done her chores today! The day just seem to druge on.

When word of this 'Klah off' reached her it barely perked her intrest but after awhile milling about the weyr aimlessly she had found herself joining in. It was then that a most devious thought had crossed her mind. Boys agains girls eh? Thats how she saw it anyway.

The slender girl wandered around, becoming just another face in the crowd. Quietly she made her way to the kitchen, acting as if it was the most natural thing in the world. That was the best way to get around with out having questions asked after all. Look as if you where on an errand. After all wasnt strange to see a canidate in the kitchens.

Slipping inside she began to look for something that would turn the tables....
