Sovann's Diary - NO IT'S A JOURNAL, I'm manly, okay?
Yeah, okay, so I scrawled something weird on the cover, but Kas needs to stop saying that stuff. I'm perfectly manly where it counts, even if he can't see that- ... on second thought, I don't want him seeing that. Anyway, this is my journal (Diary sounds girly, and I'm trying to avoid that because of a certain someone who will remain unnamed), where I'm going to try to keep track of my crazy life.

Name: Sovann --- Now S'van Age: 17 Sex: Male Sexual Orientation: Unknown Craft: N/A Rank: Candidate Physical Description: Sovann is on the tall side of middling height, tanned and lean. He has acquired a number of inconsequential scars over the years and his hands are rough from hauling fishnets. The most notable thing about him (to his mind) is the bridge of his nose which shows signs of having been broken, though it was clearly reset by a healer. He thinks it makes him look roguish, and he might just be right. His eyes are on the green side of hazel, and his hair is a medium brown. These days, he keeps most of his hair short so that it won’t tangle into fishing lines or get caught in brambles that he is so inclined to tumble into. A frustrated Denali braided a hank of his hair at the back of his neck to keep it orderly when he hacked his hair off initially three turns before and missed an entire section. As with the nose, Sovann laughs off all criticisms regarding his outlandish hair, and more to the point sees it as a tie to his sister whom he sees very little of these days. It looks a little odd, but he doesn't care and he's continued to braid that bit of hair ever since. He has faint laugh lines around his mouth, and a slight divot in one cheek that hints at a dimple. Personality: He is adventurous, somewhat on the rash side, impulsive. When he stops to actually think, he is capable of making well thought out decisions, and he has a stubborn streak a mile wide. He is a wanderer by nature, and he hasn’t sown his wild oats just yet. He does not like early mornings, and woe betide he who awakens Sovann before he is ready to be awake—who does not have a mug of Klah with him. He can be charming when he puts his mind to it, though like many teenaged males he is convinced that he shouldn’t have to try. At the best of times, he is a friendly, outgoing young man, and at the worst he is feckless and despondent. He loves his family, though he doesn’t understand them, and they have managed to instill a modicum of politeness into him despite his resistance at every step along the way, and even a little polish when he bothers with it. For all of his faults, Sovann is a good and loyal friend to those who see past his less charitable traits and a hard worker when the situation demands it. History: No one ever expected Sovann to amount to anything more than a nuisance. His parents (Sunila and Ralas) were fisherfolk, and happy to be so. He grew up in the warmth of their love, the second child and first born son. His sister Denali was everything that his family could have hoped for. She was content to take up the family craft like so many others before her. She even married a man after her father’s heart, and their new family has brought Sunila and Ralas great joy. Sovann was a different story entirely almost from birth. When Sovann was a lad (a mere seven turns) he had an encounter with a tree that he lost spectacularly, and came away with just a bit more character than his parents had expected of his young face. The tumble of out of tree did him very little harm, and served to awaken the adventurer that lurked waiting to be freed within him. That was the first of his escapades. If he wasn’t falling into streams or chasing the tides, he was diving as deep as he could manage beneath the waves searching for some excitement. He found it on numerous occasions, and came away with the scars to prove it. But all of that was fun and games for the impulsive boy, and only served to egg him on. Despairing of ever finding any outlet for their son’s excess energy, his parents finally sent him to live with some relations at a very minor sea hold, where he learned to be useful (not by learning the family craft, to their regret). Unfortunately (or at least in his parents’ lights), it was there that Sovann was found on Search. There is ambition in Sovann that his parents and extended family can scarcely understand, for they have never tried to be anything but what they are. He has too much energy, too much forward drive to stay rooted to the admittedly mundane life that they live for long. What he most longs for is to find someone to understand him, perhaps even to fill a niche somewhere with the skills that he possesses and the temperament that he will never be rid of. Along with his energetic behavior that desire to find a place for himself (that is not the one his parents chose for him) has created a bit of a rift between Sovann and his family, one which he has not given up on removing. What he doesn’t know (and what his parents are loath to tell him) is that there have been a number of youngsters like him in the family line that have gone on to be dragonriders and harpers, traders and the like. He sees his life through the lens which his family finds most appropriate, but he has not given up on the future that he so longs for. It has never occurred to Sovann to question the fairy tale history he has been told from early childhood, and while it is naïve of him to believe that no one in his family has done anything else since the line was founded, he has no particular interest in discovering otherwise. Whether his place will be in the Weyr or somewhere else there is no way of knowing. One thing is for certain, though… he won’t be fishing. Pets: None Other/Talents: To his dismay, Sovann is good at gutting fish, sailing, repairing torn cloth (sails, alas) and the assorted other skills that his parents prate so much about. He is good at swimming and holding his breath under water, though he is not certain how any of those things will be useful at a Weyr. As careless as he seems, he is an able and avid learner. He is also apparently good at writing bad songs/poems. He's interested in cooking and will be exploring that more in the future. Will this character be a candidate? Yes Picture: Here

Rules:1. Do not post in S'van's weyr/journal unless you have gotten my permission to do so. (Nessy says that the alternative Rule One is that S'van is manly.)2. If you do get permission, please post in character. Do not post requests of any kind here. (Nessy's alternative Rule Two is that if you say otherwise, S'van will beat you with his purse.)More to be added at my discretion. .... People S'van knows/has met:Okassis, "Kas": A friend for turns, a trader, really funny. He tells all kinds of whacky stories. Sovann is a bit annoyed at him for making him kiss a girl, but his fondness for him supersedes that. Lately, S'van has worried that he and Okassis will be separated by S'van's Impression of Galliath, and he has taken steps to try to avoid that. Relationship: Close/Friendly Inaari, "'Naari": Some girl Sovann and Okassis met and promptly involved in a contest. She's small and adorable, and he's having a lot of trouble not seeing her in an older brotherish light. Fear not, he will continue to be a pain. Relationship: Competitive/Friendly Jiriar: A fellow candidate whom Sovann met down by the lake, so far he seems to be nice. He's got very shapely ankles, or so a certain ode would lead one to believe. If Sovann were a little less impulsive, Jiriar would make a great meat shield. Jiriar likes the food that S'van makes, and S'van likes feeding him. All in all, a very positive relationship. Relationship: Neutral/Friendly Nandeli, "Nan", "the Nose": Evil! He met her at the Klah-Off, and so far she seems like some kind of strange female version of Kas. She insisted that Sovann kiss the aforementioned girl. ... Of course, Sovann also turned the tables by kissing Nan. He thinks he turned the tables anyway. Nan tried to steal his cot, and he was not amused. Relationship: Neutral/Questionable Nelioa: The girl that Sovann actually kissed. It was just on the cheek, but he is sulking over the indignity of having his first kiss used up that way. She seems nice enough... though she was involved in the fish klah incident (not that he knows that). Relationship: Neutral/Questionable Z'nal, Candidatemaster: Sovann is a total Z'nal fanboy. Okay, kidding. But anyway, he's convinced that somewhere deep down old Grumpy Guts has a sense of humor and he is all but determined to find it. Poor, naive lad. Relationship: Unknown Kiriwar: He's a vintner who is too good at taste testing! Sovann tried very hard to fool his fabled tongue, but alas to no avail. Who is this engaging young man? Kiriwar seems in need of a friend, and S'van is happy to be the friend he needs. Relationship: Neutral/Friendly Rayael, now R'ael: A very nice young man that Sovann met recently. They plan to have a knot tying contest, and they have similar backgrounds. Sovann is rather enamored of Rayael's flitt Rikk, and thinks Rayael himself is great fun, if a bit shy. S'van was thrilled when his friend Impressed, relieved to know one other new rider. Relationship: Neutral/Friendly E'si: Rider of Green Miith, who is Galliath's favorite clutchmate to play with. E'si also enjoys "playing" but not in so innocent a fashion as his dragonet. He's a real tease, and a b***h, but S'van finds his attitude to be amusing. Likes to pick on Kiriwar, particularly. Relationship: Questionable/Friendly S'kagi: A bronzerider and a Wingleader, S'kagi still managed to enjoy himself with S'van and Jiriar. Neither S'van nor S'kagi knew that the klah they were drinking was spiked (due in part thanks to Jiriar and Okassis both) when they drank it at the Hatching Feast. S'van met S'kagi at the Klah-Off, and so far he has a positive impression of the man. Relationship: Neutral/Friendly C'miel: The other lad at the Hatching who Impressed a brown dragonet. Galliath was not fond of his firelizard's interest in the meat that the new hatchlings (himself included) were given. Relationship: Neutral/Friendly

Yesterday, Kas and I went down to go get a mug of klah, when we encountered this nosy holder girl! I couldn't believe she was a cotholder at first-- they're all a bunch of soft shells-- but it turns out she is, and Okassis and I started up a contest with her. We're calling it the Klah-off. We're going to each make some klah, and we'll see whose brew is better by having it taste tested by people we've rounded up. What she doesn't know is that we've got a special ingredient, so we're bound to win. Okay, okay, so maybe she knows, but she doesn't know what it is.
Also, the Candidatemaster woke us up fardling early, and I was so ticked! But it's all right. It turns out, he wanted us to file out to go to the Touching. I got to see the most amazing eggs! And I touched them too! I have no idea which one I liked best. They were all so... amazing. I'm getting a little repetitive here, so I might as well cut this entry off. Anyway, I got to the Weyr two nights ago, and it's all been so grand. I ran into one of my oldest friends, and we're bunking next to each other.

Okassis is such a jerk! I can't believe that he said that! I can't believe it! Ohhhh of all the nerve. He said that I was going to Impress a gold! Doesn't he know that only women can Impress a Queen? Of course he does. He's just... ridiculous. Even though Kas insists that I'm either going to Impress a green or a queen, I'm sure that I'll prove him wrong and then won't he be eating his words. ... Not that I'd mind a green, you know, since they are fighting dragons. Pretty awesome, if you ask me. But anyway, we went down to a pond, and we collected some 'special ingredients'. The Queen comment precipitated a mud fight between Kas and I, and then there was the wrestling. I lost. ... I still think he cheated somehow. It has to be the trader in him, or something, because a seaholder doesn't lose his fights, scorch it! It was all very fun and very messy.

Oh did I mention? I managed to convince two Candidates to join in the Klah-off, which is bound to be awesome. I had to take a bath, thanks to Okassis and his fardling cheating tactics! But I met someone when I got back to the barracks, and he agreed to be a taste-tester. I don't think I caught his name, but it doesn't matter. He's coming (I hope), and it will all be fabulous! Also, I went down to the lake scouting out potential victi- err, participants, and I met a really nice guy named Jiriar. Shards and Shells he is tall! Tall, lanky, and all of that. He even has hazel eyes like mine. Funny to run into someone who reminds me of me-- of course, I'm much more dashing. Well, to be fair, it wasn't his eyes I was there for. He agreed to be a taste-tester, which is great! By the first egg, I really think we're going to pull this off!

Okassis is a Jerk
Okassis is a jerk He's a real deadglow No one likes a trader's smirk Take it from me-- I should know!
Okassis is a wherry He's crazy as crazy can be And oh he can be really scary When he's throwing mud at me!
Okassis has no shame His huge ego is growing again He thinks everything is just a game Or it is if it means he will win!
Okassis is a Bitran It's insane how odds favor him By the egg, he cheats I'm certain-- And that's how I know he's one of them!
Okassis is a jerk.
I know, I know, I'm really bad with rhyme, but I'm pretty sure Kas knows where I've hidden my dia- Journal, so just in case...

Nan the Nose
In the Weyr there’s a girl named Nan Who tells all the lies that she can If you’ve got business She’ll be a witness Your 'mates will all know to a man Your 'mates will know all that you plan
Guess who met Nandeli? Yeah, that's right, me. I've got more to say about that and the Klah-Off, but it'll have to wait. Busy now.

Today was the Klah-Off, and the unthinkable happened. We lost! You would think that that would be the more traumatic thing that happened today, but no. Okassis and Nandeli are evil. Absolutely evil! Okassis decided that it was a great idea to use me as bait, and offered a kiss from me to the next girl who tried the klah out. To make matter worse, she was choking on the klah when I gave her the kiss. At least I managed to get off lightly. I kissed her on the cheek and she stopped choking. That was probably the most eventful thing that happened, except that the Candidatemaster came and actually tried our klah! The look on his face! It was priceless. I will never forget what he said. Unfortunately, he has assigned Okassis and I to clean the latrines every morning for the foreseeable future. Uuugh, latrine duty! The best part, though, is that this gives me proof that he has a sense of humor. I knew it. Ha, Kas, I told you so!

Did you know that vintners can apparently detect individual flavors even in klah? I didn't... not until now, at least. I met this Candidate-- well, met probably isn't appropriate, since I did run into him at the Klah-Off, but I'm going to go with that for now-- named Kiriwar, and he's very, hemm, talented. That is to say, he can taste just about anything I put in food. I'm impressed, really, because I put some fardling obscure spices in the klah I made this morning, and he seems quite capable of figuring them out almost effortlessly. It was quite frustrating. Of course, I also broke a mug and a pot today, no thanks to Kiriwar. He startled me, that's all. I can be startled the same as anyone else, can't I? He's charming enough, but I know someone else who is even more charming. Why did I write that? Anyway, everything seems to be settling down into a routine after the great Klah Catastrophe, so I think I'll settle in for the evening too.

I've got something planned... something that I'm not going to tell anyone about. Not yet, anyway. A special day is approaching, and I have some serious plotting to do. No more information on that for now, but well... we'll see, won't we?

Inaari totally fell for it! I can't believe she actually thought that I forgot that today was her Naming Day. As though she hadn't told Kas and I that endlessly. Really, she mentioned it so often that I couldn't help but have the date branded behind my eyelids. Anyway, I was able to pull something awesome off. There was someone selling this firelizard egg, right? They seemed pretty desperate to get it sold off. Something about it not being viable, or whatever. They were wrong about that, I'll have you know. It just so happens that Inaari is now the proud owner of a green flitt! Oh, and I made her some cakes and such (they taught me how to do that here, which is really great since I never learned at home) and left her a note on her bed with the egg in its pot. ... I hope Okassis never finds out, or I'll never live it down!

I played a very dangerous game today, and I'm not really sure what to make of it. I suppose I can classify it as my first real kiss, though it doesn't feel that way. Somehow, the fact that I was doing it as a sort of challenge takes away from the whole thing. Still, I do feel as though I scored some points against Nandeli. Trouble is, that probably means that she is going to spread some rumors about me, or something. The questions she asked me! Honestly, it's not that I feel that relations between men are unnatural and all of that. It's that it sounded like she was calculating my value, or something. As though she was going to sell me to the highest bidder. That was a little unnerving, but I think that I managed pretty well in the end. Is it too much to ask for people to leave my love life alone? ... Faranth I hope that Okassis doesn't find out about this...
I keep saying that, don't I? But really, if you knew Okassis like I do, you'd know why I worry about these things.
