the boy next door

Name: H'dek ( Formerly Hesendek)
Age: Seventeen
Sex: Male
Rank: Weyrling ( Formerly an apprentice vintner.)

Physical Description: H'dek is the typical boy next door. His hair is sandy blond, or maybe it’s light brown, no one can ever be sure, but it matches warm, carmel brown eyes. He’s at that awkward stage between boy and man, he’s grown to a man’s height, but he certainly hasn’t filled out like one! He’s wiry and tough, used to physical labor and outdoor rough-housing. It shows, his hands are calloused and he has his fair share of spotty, barely noticeable scars on his arms and legs from boyhood stupidity. He’s always dressed in something he doesn’t mind ruining and he wears a bandana-like cloth around his neck when he’s not wearing his mask in the craft hall. It’s come to the point the lad feels naked without something there.

Personality: H'dek acts just like he looks, that adorable boy down the country road. He’s polite and cheerful, respects the ladies and his elders. Working at Benden Hold’s Winecrafthall has been in his family for years and H'dek is more than happy to follow the family tradition. He’s been taught to work hard and not complain. Giving because something is ‘too hard’ is out of the question, but there is no shame in asking for advice.

A bit of a family man, H'dek’s family extends beyond his own mother and father. They never bore another child, but they did take in a girl about Hesen’s age, Gamoira, to bring her into the Winecrafthall. H'dek treats her like one of his own, protects her from people that pick on her intelligence (or rather, lack there of), and tries to make sure she survives apprenticeship. H'dek values justice and fair treatment. Speaking of, Hesen would like to think most of the other apprentices are like his family, too. Sure, there’s competition to see who will reach the rank of journeyman first, but for the most part, he feels they’re a pretty tight-knit band of friends! (He also feels like he’s the leader. But that sort of thing is not something he’d admit out loud.)

H'dek is a very humble young man; he’s not proud of his looks, he’s not proud of his father’s rank and he’s not proud of the fact he was Searched. ( Grateful, but not something he boasts. ) He's not proud of his bronze, even if Bondyeth says he should be. There is one thing that Hesen does take pride in, and that’s the integrity of Benden wine. There is no excuse for bad wine and he refuses to drink anything that isn’t Benden. ( Or Southern. He can tolerate Southern. )

Pets: None
Other/Talents: H'ek is a wine snob.

a current history

Hesendek was born in Benden Hold to a journeyman vintner and his wife. She worked in the Hold fields, as dictated by the Hold, and he worked happily in Winecrafthall as his father did before him, and his father before him. It was a happy family Hesendek was born into, though hardworking. The importance of such was impressed upon the boy at a young age; as soon as he was old enough to toddle, he was taken out into the fields with his mother.

It was there young Hesendek met most of his friends, through his mother’s friends, and those were the boys and girls he worked with and played with until he was thirteen and deemed old enough to carry baskets of grapes into the hall. That was also the turn Gamoira joined his family; she was also going to apprentice in the hall. Three turns later, the pair was brought up to help sort the good grapes from the bad. Hesendek usually behaved himself, only once having to be sent to press out the grape juice. That was a punishment he didn’t particularly want to relive.

It was only a few seven days ago that Hesendek was Searched. At first, the lad was unsure about going to Ista Weyr; it had always been his goal to become a journeyman like his father. But once it was pointed out he was always welcome back in case he didn’t Impress, Hesendek agreed whole-heartedly and made his way to Ista Weyr. There is nothing like a new adventure!

And an adventure it was! While he was only at Ista Weyr a few weeks before the Hatching, life proved to be nothing less than exciting. Hesendek met a few candidates and touched the eggs, something the boys he worked with only dreamed of. He and Mo stood together and, lo and behold, bronze Bondyeth claimed Hesendek as his own. Now known as H'dek, the lad will not be returning to Benden. He has Weyrling lessons to attend!

i'm a superstar, yeah, you know it

Name: Bondyeth
Age: A few days old
Color: Bronze
Rank: Weyrling

Physical Description: Well still an awkward hatchling, Bondyeth is still a fine specimen of dragonhood. His hide is very bright, a very fiery shade of bronze. He's almost more orange than anything else; he certainly stands out in a crowd! He’s a large bronze, with a build that is neither too bulky nor too slender. He’ll grow at a faster rate than any of his clutchmates save the gold, though at first he won’t grow at all, leaving him smaller than even some browns before he has his first growth spurt.

Personality: Lest you forget, Bondyeth is a bronze. Let him remind you again. Wait, one last time. He wasn’t sure you had picked it up that last time he told you. For all that Bondyeth goes on about his color, you would think he’s a Queen. All Bondyeth needs is a little monocle or a scepter to complete his regal carriage. He’s the king of all dragons, as far as he’s concerned- no other bronze can rival him, and very few females are fit to be his consort. Those that are almost always gold, with little exception to that rule.

Consider it lucky if Bondyeth deigns to talk to you. There are very few he finds worthy of that admittedly questionable honor. He speaks to very few, unless he’s in charge of them. Then he’ll bark out orders with the best of them, angry if his command is not obeyed explicitly. His short temper makes him a rather volatile dragon, though his anger only manifests itself in loud bellows, and never in any physical violence. Contrary to what many people think, Bondyeth is never violent. Yes, he’s an aloof, arrogant b*****d, but he would never hurt a fly, though he may boast of his physical prowess often.

Given his general disdain for other dragons, it can be difficult to get Bondyeth to actually listen to them. Though most everyone is assured that he’ll one day make a splendid Wingleader, as a younger dragon, he will need to be taught manners and respect. The message might take a few clouts to the head, but it will slowly sink in. Oh, Bondyeth will never stop acting like he’s the king of the Weyr, but at least he’ll listen to what other bronzes and Queens have to say. His admittedly low opinion of other colors will stay that way, no matter what his rider thinks. His rider will probably have to be extra nice to get over that fault in his dragon, really.

When Bondyeth can avoid the call of nature, he will. He wants only to chase Queens, to catch them and sire a clutch. Becoming a father is one of his secret goals, even if it is one that will take a while to achieve. Young bronzes aren’t likely to catch a gold their first few times, though Bondyeth certainly has both the speed and the strength. He’ll just be a bit inept at first, and not understand that females would rather hear how pretty they are- not how handsome he is. He will chase greens when biological imperative takes over, but prefers not to.

the african wild dog egg

African Wild Dog Egg

Wildly patterned and large in size, the Wild Dog egg commands attention. Across the entirety of the egg, dark brown, silver, and gold fight for dominance, blotching over each other and bleeding into each other. Its large size has warranted it a place close to the Queen, presiding proudly over both a smaller egg and the larger Queen egg. Whatever is in the egg seems to be determined to be noticed. It’s certainly a forceful little bugger, whatever lies within the shell. Putting your hand against the warm surface, you can almost feel the dragonet within struggling to get out already.

The African Wild Dog

The African wild dog has a pelage with an irregular pattern of black, yellow, and white, distinctive for each individual. The scientific name "Lycaon pictus" is derived from the Greek for "wolf" and the Latin for "painted". It is the only canid species to lack Dewclaws on the forelimbs.

A study established that the African wild dog had a Bite Force Quotient of 142, the highest of any extant mammal of the order Carnivora.[5] The BFQ is essentially the strength of bite as measured against the animal's mass.

African Wild Dogs have an unusual way of deciding dominance. In packs, there are separate male and female hierarchies that will split up if either of the alphas die. In the female group, the oldest will have alpha status over the others, or if the mother of the others will retain her alpha status over her daughters. For the males, in contrast the youngest male or the father of the other males will be dominant. When two such loner separate-gender groups meet, if unrelated they can form a pack together. Dominance is established without blood-shed, as most dogs within a group tend to be related to one another in some way, and even when not this can occur.

The African Wild Dog hunts in packs. Like most members of the dog family, it is a cursorial hunter, meaning that it pursues its prey in a long, open chase. Nearly 80% of all hunts end in a kill. Members of a pack vocalize to help coordinate their movements. Its voice is characterized by an unusual chirping or squeaking sound, similar to a bird.

The Caribbean God Bondye

BONDYE: Very Senior Voudou Top God. He appears very aloof. Don't bother to knock — just Go Away.

Being a mix of badly and vaguely taught Christianity, mixed with African mythology, Voodou is almost a monotheistic religion by the back door.

Thus BONDYE is the Voodou monoGod. But the polytheistic side comes with the LOA, giving plenty of lesser deity spirits to worship. BONDYE does actually seem quite aloof (no doubt because of his African origins) while the LOA flit in and out of everyday life.

BONDYE is generally referred to as male although, like most monoGods, it's really down to his own personal preference. Is he married to Mother Goddess GRAN-MET or is he really her?

The Impression

All of a sudden, the African Wild Dog egg burst open, revealing a rather orange looking dragon. He was clearly bronze, but there was a distinctly orange cast to his hide.

He took no time to make his decision, rushing over to Hesendek.

I am yours. I am the best dragon in the clutch! I am Bondyeth. You are my rider now. You should be proud.

His words spoken, the orange-tinted dragon lay down at the feet of his newly made rider, looking rather proud of himself.

Oh God, Why Me?

What happens when a polite young man who is exceedingly humble Impresses a dragon who wouldn't know humble if it bit him in the a**? I'm not sure, but I can't wait to see. Poor Hesendek.
