Age: Nineteen
Sex: Female (heterosexual)
Craft: Beastcraft
Rank: Apprentice/Candidate
Physical Description: As a girl who was once slender with little to no curves to speak of, Astrisabe carries her curves awkwardly, not yet used to the blatant sensuality curves seem to endow. While her waist remains relatively slender, her curves are rather big, sometimes making Astri appear bigger than she actually is.
Her height would have presented another issue, had she not had several long Turns to revel in what made being short so glorious. Standing at only five feet, three inches, Astri can easily be described as short, but she doesn’t seem to mind it at all. She carries herself as much taller than she is, which in effect, seems to make people startled when they realize she is quite tiny.
Short seems to be a motif with Astri. Perhaps as a holdover from her racing days, her dark blonde hair is kept crossed short, barely plastered to her skull, and with a tendency to stick up at odd angles any conceivable chance they get. Short hair doesn’t actually seem to be a bad look for Astri though- it highlights the fact that she does have quite nice cheekbones, and seems to detract from the fact that her face is almost too round.
The imperfect facial features don’t end there. Astri’s eyes are almost too large, their blue-grey color almost unremarkable. Her smile is slightly crooked, but other than that, her features are fairly even and typical. It’s not a displeasing face, but it’s certainly not one that is in any way more beautiful or lovely than the rest. There are other girls far more pretty than Astri, not that she seems to mind.
Genetics, unfortunately, played a cruel hand to Astri, making her pale in a climate where the sun is constantly out. As a result, Astri is very nearly always burned, and failing that, peeling. She’s lightly freckled, but unable to tan. The burns can get quite severe, so the girl will try and get shade and protection from the sun whenever possible.
Personality: From the ashes of immaturity and competitive spirit rise… Well, more maturity… and a competitive spirit. You can take away the race from a girl, but you can’t take away her spirit. And spirit is certainly a word that would describe Astri. In the past, she was hot tempered as they come, teenage hormones certainly not helping the problem. Now she has calmed down quite a bit, and has become more rational, but that wild streak still lies in wait, ready to come out at a time Astri deems appropriate. Knowing what she used to be like, and somewhat ashamed of her temper, she tries to think before she speaks, though that doesn’t always work.
Having matured, both physically and mentally, rather late, Astri is always conscious of her behavior… Well, nearly always anyway. When she entered her apprenticeship, she entered rather late, and found herself being watched by the critical eyes of those Turns younger than her. They tested her in the ways they could, and Astri responded in kind. Eventually she earned the respect of those younger apprentices.
While she’s not fond of human children, Astri knows how to responsibly care for them. Her ‘mothering instinct’ only comes up with those creatures of the non-human variety, and then it runs strong indeed. Astri is a protective girl of those she holds dear, and not afraid to put herself in harm’s way. By the same token, when dealing with people, she likes to know how it would be advantageous to herself- call it political savvy, if you will.
It’s surprisingly hard to rouse Asti’s anger, though she grows easily impatience with what she deems incompetence, and likes people to hold themselves to some unknown standard of perfection that not even she’s able to fully clarify. She’s an intelligent girl though, and knows how to hold herself in check, and how to delegate tasks and try and be fair with everyone. Being one of the oldest apprentices certainly helps- she often finds herself being placed temporarily in charge of their motley group, or having those younger than her look to her for advice and leadership. Astri will try her best, and shards, if it doesn’t work, she’ll do it again!
The girl is stubborn to a fault- even when things are blatantly pointless or futile, she will do her damnedest on whatever it is she’s trying to do. Trying to get her mind off the one track it’s going on is nigh impossible, which can be frustrating to both parties involved.
Her old career has left Astri with a taste for the daring and ambition to be the best, to be widely respected and have people listen. Of course, there’s also the desire to be widely regarded as the ‘best’ at something- a fruitless ambition, but one Astri maintains. She is, after all, rather vain in regards to her own skills at racing, and to a certain regard, to her own appearance. Not overly so, but a girl has got to be a girl, right?
History: You could say it all went downhill the moment Astrisabe was placed on the back of a runner as a young child. From that moment onward, she craved speed and adrenaline, and constantly pushed herself as a rider to become better and better, her ambitions rising all the while.
After years of training herself under Journeymen and her own parents, Astri was finally noticed for her riding skills by a young runner breeder, desperate to make his own name for his leggy runners. Astri was hired as a rider, and she entered the dangerous world of runner racing. She won many races, but lost many more, but from the age of sixteen Turns to eighteen Turns, she enjoyed a somewhat lucrative career, with wild renown in certain social circles. Then the unthinkable happened- Astrisabe’s body, long dormant, decided to burst into full puberty in the most horrific way. She became too heavy to race. Distraught, she entered a beastcraft apprenticeship. While it never satisfied her own need for speed and competitive nature, she found some rest in perhaps one day becoming a Healer. It was here that her mind latched onto the idea of dragons. And once her mind was on something…
Her family life was rather ordinary. Having both an older brother and two younger sisters, Astri was not very important as a bargaining chip in the marriage game. Her own father was a Journeyman in the Beastcraft, dealing primarily with ovines. He was never posted to another Hold or to a Weyr- he met Astri’s mother, and they married at a young age. Their own deep love and respect for each other taught Astri to expect the same from a man.
