March 20, 2008—Of Earth and Sky

I peered through the telescope, watching as my lovely Kanoa wake up, a small movement caught my eye. I looked a little to the right, to spot a white colt with brown dog-like markings. He was an adorable little creature, but he somehow seemed off by himself. I promptly named him Kynan, or hound, for his markings.

I watched with bated breath to see if he would interact with dear Kanoa, but the little unicorn pranced around on his own, seeming to prefer his own company. My blue-and-white foal watched him curiously, with large, innocent blue eyes, but seemed to shy to say hello.

Not three minutes after Kynan’s arrival, I saw a red streak out of the corner of my eye, and looked up, towards the clouds. A tiny filly was fluttering through the air, pulling the most ridiculous stunts with no regard for whoever might be watching. She did not seem to notice, or care how awkward her flight was, but was clearly elated by her freedom.

“I’ll call her Aki,” I said to myself. “Sky, for the wide blue expanse is her domain.”

I could not believe my luck. In a single day, after months of watching unsuccessfully, I had gone from dreaming of unisi to becoming a Watcher, with three young foals to look after. One earthbound, one embraced by the wind, and one who shared the traits of both. I am reluctant to retire to bed, when so many wonders and loves linger outside my window, but I am filled with the hope of another beautiful day tomorrow.

March 21, 2008—New Beginnings

Today marks the first new day of my life as a Watcher of the Unisus. Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to become the watcher of three new foals, all on the same day. Kanoa is the little angel from my dreams, and she always seems to me like a dream, mystical, as if she might dissolve into the clouds at any second. She is extremely shy, and a bit quiet, but keeps looking longingly at other foals, as though she wants to play, but is afraid to take the first step.

Kynan is an active, brave little foal, but he tends to, for the most part, avoid other unisi. Instead, he plays more with dogs, cats, and other non-equine animals. Somehow, he seems to mistrust others of his own species.

Aki, the bright little girl, is quite outgoing, bubbly, and friendly. It seems she is always flying, and would do nothing else if she could help it. The little pegasus has to see everything and meet everyone. It is quite amusing how she tries to make friends with every unisus she meets, whether unisus, unicorn, or unisus, no matter if they are adults, yearlings, or foals. She is constantly flying over human towns, investigating with a curious eye, but it scares me so! I am afraid of what might happen if the wrong people catch sight of my darlings.

March 21, 2008--Freedom to Fly

Hooray! Today I finally managed to do a flip in midair! I've been trying for two weeks, and now I've finally got it! I did it yesterday, and now I think I've got the hang of it.

I have been flipping, twisting, and zooming through the air, soaring on the wind...well, almost soaring. But it is so elating, to fly, and to have such freedom...I feel so sorry for the poor earthbound unicorns.

Unicorns...I saw a unicorn today. He's a brown-and-white colt named Kynan, but I don't think he likes me. He always looks away when I talk to him, and looks at plants more than me. I saw him yesterday, when I was teaching myself to flip. He was prancing around, sniffing tree leaves, and seemed totally fascinated with a boring old sapling. Well, maybe unicorns are just strange...

Today I ran into him. He was rather irritated, though I can't fathom why. Neither of us were hurt. Still, he was very polite. I'd like to find him again and get him to play. I think he needs to spend more time with his own kind, instead of green junk. He is rather cute, with markings like a dog.

I also saw another pegasus like me yesterday, though not today. She's so white and pretty, with nice blue touches here and there. I'm afraid she'll steal all the colts, for she's about my age. I've met her mother, so I know her name's Kanoa.

She seems so dependent on her mother. I've never had one, and never needed one either. I can look after myself well enough. There's a sour old unicorn who says I need someone to teach me some manners, but I can't seem to understand why anyone would need etiquette. It's so pointless, dry, and boring!

I can't wait 'till tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be able to figure out how to corkscrew straight upwards, like those handsome yearling colts.

March 24, 2008—Family Beginnings

Marge and I have noticed that Kynan has been following the bee stallion, Ioni, everywhere. He’s usually such a solitary foal, never associating with other unisi. And now he is completely attached to Ioni and his mate, Via. I hope that this may be signs that the terrier colt is beginning to open up to his own kind…

Aki has been prancing along behind Via, but far enough back that I am not sure what she is up to. I hope she is not simply getting into mischief and bothering poor Via. Aki is such an irrepressible filly…She will bother anyone and everyone, and never seems to see anything wrong with it. She’s very happy-go-lucky, and seems quite happy with herself. But now she is taking odd interest in that mare…I wonder…

March 24, 2008--Mom, Dad, and WHEE, Big Bro!

Hooray! I have a family now! There is so much to tell...Yay! I ended up meeting the blue-and-white pegasus, who, as it turns out, is so shy she probably won't have such an easy time with colts, after all. There was an orange pegasus filly too, with white stripes around her body. Her name's Malte, and she's the most forgiving filly I've ever met. I actually fell on her, from the sky, and she wasn't mad at all!

Well, I'm not sure what happened, but both of them started crying at some point or another. The most beautiful unicorn mare I've ever seen came and asked nicely if they were alright! Now she's my mom! Her name is Via, but I just call her mother now. She found out I'm by myself, and she was really worried about me or something, though I can't see why. I take care of myself alright, don't I? But I love Mother.

What's more, there's Father too. He's a tall, handsome stallion, with markings like a bee. I'm proud to have him for a dad. He was with Kynan, the antisocial brown-and-white unicorn. Something about a mean dad...But anyways, now Kynan's staying with us too! He's just a couple weeks older than me, so now I've got a whole family--Mom, Dad, and WHEE, Big Bro! Kynan said sorry for yelling at me. He's a bit quiet and boring, but I love him all the same. Father--oh, his name is Ioni--offered to take care of him, and I guess he doesn't like his dad.

I hear his dad's a unisus, so he has a horn AND wings. Lucky. Well, I wouldn't trade my wings for a horn, but it would be cool to have both. I've had a positively lovely day!

March 26, 2008--Growing Foal

Falcon has spotted yet another unisus! It's a beautiful faerie female, and she has a lovely golden halo. I wish her luck--perhaps the trait will pass on to her youngsters. She's already fully grown...I wonder what her life as a filly was like.

My beautiful Kanoa has become fast friends with Marge's clownfish, Malte. She follows the orange pegasus everywhere, like a little white shadow. Aki is teaching them both how to make wreaths from bunches of fresh spring blooms.

The little white filly is still very small, about the size of a three-week-old foal, though she is about three months old. She is delicate as a fairy, with thin white legs and a fine fluff of a mane and tail. Somehow she never seems to get dirty, and even when she does, she cleans up right away. Her tiny blue wings appear far too small to be of much use, but she flutters them almost as fast as a hummingbird, dipping awkwardly through the sky.

While Aki is working to fly faster and do more tricks, Kanoa grows more graceful and gentle all the time. She's such a little beauty...

March 28, 2008--Journey Ahead

Hooray! Mother says that we are going to Acotsa Valley! Kynan and I are not to tell anybody anything, not even Kanoa or Malte. I wish they could come as well but...I promised Mother I'd hold my tongue. I cannot wait to meet Acosta, the First unisus.

The valley is supposed to be really quite beautiful, with forests and plateaus and deep forests. But what I'm a bit sad about is that the trees which hide the valley from passing pegasi also hide it from the sky. It must be rather dark. I'd hate to be unable to see the sky...I don't know how much I'll like it. But it will be great to be together as a family and get to know Kynan better. He is such an antisocial colt, I don't know what to say to him!

Well, he's been improving since Daddy talked with him. I only hope he'll become more carefree. Well, I think we're about ready to leave. It's a long journey.

March 30, 2008—Growing Foals

It’s so wonderful to watch the foals playing out there in the valley…Kanoa is ceaselessly at Malte’s side, though she tends to also watch the other foals she does not know. I think she wants to make friends with every unisus in the valley, the way she looks longingly at them all.

Aki and Kynan are getting along much better now. I think Kynan’s harshness towards the filly was partly due to fear and stress imposed on him by his father. Now that he is with a better family, he has become much more pleasant with Aki, Kanoa, and Malte. He still eyes other unisi suspiciously, though, as if they were out to get him. I wish he were not so skittish. Aki seems very excited about Via’s coming foals, as she continually nuzzles against the cow unicorn’s swollen stomach, as if trying to nuzzle the coming foals. Kynan is less enthusiastic, but happy nevertheless.

Kanoa seems so ignorant of what the world can be like. She goes everywhere, almost adventurous but for the fact that she is extremely shy. But among plants, other animals, and nonliving things, she is quite lively. She loves to play with birds and butterflies, flying with them and persuading them to land on her mane and all over her back. Though she is reluctant to go and introduce herself to a stranger, if a unisus befriends her she is so very trusting…she does not have the slightest suspicion of someone she has met only a minute before. Her trusting nature is very sweet and beautiful, yet a danger as well…

April 1, 2008--Adventuring Foals

Aki, Kynan, Ioni, and Via have vanished...I think it has to do with Aki's journal entry, where she excitedly mentioned that they are going to visit Acotsa Valley...I do hope they'll be safe.

Kanoa misses her friends, but is content to romp with Malte, for the most part. I hope they will return soon, but in the meantime I believe Kynan will have a lovely time with Acosta, the First...

April 3, 2008—Keeping Secrets

I can’t wait until we reach Acotsa Valley! I’m so tired…I do hope Mother is alright, since she is walking with two foals inside her. That must be really really heavy. She’s still wearing the flower I picked for her yesterday.

Somehow I feel like something is missing, or like we left someone behind. Not just Kanoa and Malte, but someone else…I don’t know who. But a lot of adults around are jumpy and nervous, like something is happening but they’re not supposed to tell me. I’d like to know what’s going on—It’s not fair for the adults to keep secrets just because we foals are younger! I wonder if Mommy and Daddy are taking us to Acotsa because of the weird jumpiness. Maybe we’re running away from something! I’d rather find the thing and chase it away, though.

April 5, 2008—Threatened Creatures

Well, judging by Kynan and Aki’s entries, it looks like they have gone to a valley called Acotsa, which Via told them about. It’s a load off my mind, to know that they’re safe. I just wonder what is going on, that makes them all so nervous. I hope everything is alright. If there are humans threatening them, they’re going to hear from me, and I’m sure several others, like DJ, Marge, Trin, Fal, and Ichigo.

Lately I’ve been only able to watch Kanoa, who seems rather lonely without Kynan and Aki. She stays with Malte a lot, but she seems to spend more time now just following her mother around. She has become more introverted than ever, though I don’t know why. I hope everything is okay…

April 7, 2008—Babies Coming!

I’ve finally decided what to call my new parents! I’ll say Mama and Papa. Kynan just says Mother and Father all the time. I think that’s so awfully formal…I call him Kynny, but he doesn’t like it.

I haven’t told Kynny yet that I’m afraid of the dark. He’ll tease me, like everyone else does. Of all the things in the world, I’m only afraid of the dark, and of fast, deep water. I play fine in the shallows, but I’m afraid of drowning, the water heavy and dark and pressing down on me. That’s why I got mad at Kyn when he pulled me off Papa’s back. I was scared, because Papa is so tall that the water he wades in is so deep!

I can’t wait to see my baby sibling. I told Kynny it’s going to be a boy, but he says a girl. It’ll be a boy, I bet. He’ll have a yellow horn with black spots like Mama, and he’ll have nice, shiny wings like Papa and he’ll be black, because Mama and Papa both have black on them. But the black spots will be really really black, and his hooves will be yellow. Kyn laughed when I told him, and he said you just don’t get black patterns on a black body. I don’t think he’s right, because my little brother will. Kynny thinks the foal will look like Papa, only with a yellow horn and no wings. Or like Mama, with wings and no horn.

Well, I don’t care what he or she is like, as long as he likes me. I’ll teach him all sorts of games and fun. I can’t wait to be a big sister!
