 Via sighed happily as she looked around her family. It was still early, the sun barely above the horizon. The black and white mare sighed as she stood, nuzzling Ioni who still dozed on. Today he and she planned to take Kynan and Aki to visit the Valley, but first, she need to make sure that both foals knew the story of Acotsa Valley and of Acosta. There was another reason that Via was so anxious to get to the valley. She didn't know how soon exactly, but she knew that the foals would be soon, and she didn't want to risk being miles away from the valley when they decided it was time. The mare stepped forward, nuzzling the foals softly, a smile on her face.

 Aki opened her eyes, still heavy with sleep, as she lifted her head to lick her mother's nose. "Is it morning already?" she murmured. In the past, she had gotten up whenever she pleased, often far into the afternoon. But here was a beautiful black and white mare tenderly nudging her awake. Life was wonderful.
Stretching her stiff legs, the little pegasus struggled clumsily to her feet, then headbutted her foster brother. "Wake up Kynan!" she giggled. The unicorn was still fast asleep. When Kynan opened one eye, she turned back to Via. "What is it, Mother?"

 Kynan lazily lifted one eyelid, glaring at his new sister. He hadn't had such a peaceful night's sleep for a long time... Even when his father was gone, he had still been constantly afraid at night, sure that ever bush hid his father's hard hooves and cruel horn. Now, with Ioni and Via, he felt safe, secure, even happy. He rolled over onto his back, looking up at his mother. The grass beneath him felt cool and good, and the sky above was cloudless and blue. Contentedly, the colt stood and nuzzled his head against his mother's side, sure he'd never be scared of anything again.

Via smiled down at the two children. "I'm sorry to wake you two up so early, but I wanted to know if you two had heard of Acotsa Valley." She smiled at them, the joy of being a mother swelling in her stomach. "And besides, as soon as I wake your father up we're going on a trip." She smiled down at them, "So what do you think?"

Kynan shook his head, eyes wide. "What is it? Where?" The thought of a trip excited him. Perhaps it would bring the family closer together. "I'd love to go."

Via smiled. She loved telling the legend to foals. "Well, then I'll tell you the legend of the valley." The mare began her story, changing the pitch of her voice as she spoke to better tell the story. Once she was finished, the mare added, "When Ioni and I were yearlings, we decided that we were going to find the magical Acotsa Valley and so we set out exploring. It took us all day, but we did find it, and living inside of it is Acosta, the very first unisus and the guardian of the valley. Ioni and I are going to take the both of you to meet him and we're going to stay until the foals are born and are old enough to make the trip back. The valley is hidden by a special magic so that only unisi with good intentions will be able to find it. However, when we do return, you two must promise to never show anyone the way to the valley, not even Kanoa and Malte. Understand?"

Aki listened, wide-eyed, as Via told the story of the feuding unicorns and pegasi, the forbidden love of opposite kinds, and the uniting of the two races. She was filled with amazement and excitement. "Yes, I promise Mother." Then she sprang up and leapt into the air. We're going there?!" she cried happily. "We're going to go to the place where the legend happened and meet the First?" She skipped around Kynan happily. "Just think, what if Acosta had never been born. We couldn't be brother and sister, and Mother and Father wouldn't be able to lifemate. We wouldn't even be here!" She found the idea utterly baffling, but her elation prevented her from caring.
Trotting over to Ioni, the filly headbutted her father, trying to wake him up. "Come on Daddy!" she laughed. "We're going to see Acosta in Acotsa Valley!" She wished she could show Kanoa and Malte, but a promise was a promise. She was soon distracted by thoughts of the younger siblings she would soon have, and rolled in the grass, delighted. She was going to be a big sister!

Kynan's dark eyes betrayed nothing, but his mind was filled with images of unicorns and pegasi fighting to the death, and of opposite species pledged in forbidden love. His spirit stirred, desiring to find out more. The colt's face was full of excitement as his mother announced that they would visit the valley. He would love to meet the First unisus, Acosta. It was said that he had magical power enough to hide the entire valley.
Grinning as Aki tried to awake their father, he snuggled up against Via. "Mother, what did Acosta look like? Did he fight many battles? Was he ever afraid?"

Via bent her head to nuzzle Kynan, smiling at Aki's efforts to wake Ioni. "Acosta is a very old and very wise stallion. He's mainly grey but has dark brown markings and his wings are feathery and gold and his horn is spiralled and white. He wears a crown on his head that is white with gold gems. He's the kindest and smartest stallion I've ever met, besides your father of course." She said with a happy smile before shaking her head. "Acosta never fought in any battles. At least not the kinds you're probably thinking of. He used his kindness and words to bring peace along and he didn't believe in fighting. How can you fight for peace after all? It's just more fighting. But yes, Acosta was very scared. There were a lot of people who thought that a unisus shouldn't exsist, and he had to fear for his life. But Acosta overcame all of that, it's part of what adds to his legacy."

Kynan sat back and sighed. "I'll never be that brave," he said wistfully. "Or that smart, or anything." Still, he wished there were stories of fights, and struggles, victories and losses. He was male, after all. Despite the colt's painful shyness due to a harsh past upbringing, he had a very male love for battle, proof of strength, honor, duty, and chivalry. The old tales of human knights and their code of honor always fascinated him. "Why didn't Acosta fight the ones who didn't like him?" he asked, confused.

When Ioni failed to awake, Aki pouted and minced back to her mother. "When is Daddy going to wake up?" she nagged. "I want to go see Acosta, and Pegasus Plateau!" The little pegasus was almost vibrating, she was so excited. She ran around in circles, flew around in circles, then plopped down on the ground, exhausted. "Mother," she sighed, "I don't think I can make it to Acotsa Valley now. I'm tired."

 "Now don't say that Kynan. You can be as brave and smart as you want to be." Via said, nuzzling the foal. "Now come on, we need to get to the valley, and soon." At least judging by the shifting in her stomach. "Come on Ioni, wake up." The unicorn bent her head to nudge Ioni.
Ioni grumbled as he stirred, groggily lifting his head. "Are we leaving now?" He asked sleepily, getting to his feet. He nuzzled Aki and then Kynan, smiling.

Kynan looked up happily and nuzzled Via. "Thanks, Mother," he said softly. He stood, stretching, and looked expectantly at his parents. He couldn't wait! Perhaps Acosta would teach him how to be a courageous and still peaceful...He really looked forward to meeting the unisus stallion.

Aki, prancing carelessly around the area, failed to notice as Ioni finally awoke. "We're going to see Acosta!" she yelled happily. One would have thought the whole valley, maybe even the whole world, could hear the happy filly. She ran into Ioni, tumbling backwards to land splayed on her back. "Yay, Daddy's awake!"

Via frowned slightly at Aki, but soon smiled. "Sweetheart, not so loud, alright? Now let's get a move on. We need to be there by night." She said, helping Aki to her feet before starting forward, glancing back to make sure the others were following.
