 Aki wandered aimlessly through the valley, unsure of what to do with herself. She had just finished a flying lesson with Ioni, so her wings were definitely too tired to soar through the air. The grey-and-red filly bent down to sniff a large white flower, closing her eyes in contentment. It smelled so lovely...Letting her mind wander, she thought of Kynan, her unicorn foster-brother. She was so infatuated with him...But he seemed not to notice, and only saw her as his little sister. If only he loved her too...

 Kynan noticed Aki nearby and smiled, creeping up to her. "Lilies really are lovely this time of year, aren't they?" he said with a grin. His gawky little sister had really blossomed into a pretty yearling, red mane always braided, always seeking approval from everyone. She loved to be encouraged and praised...

Aki squealed in fright and tumbled backwards, landing in an undignified heap. Tears sprang to her eyes as she realized she Kynan had seen her humiliation. "I--Kynan," she began. Getting awkwardly to her feet, she turned away towards the flowers, her head hanging dejectedly. Somehow she always managed to look so stupid and immature in front of him.

Kynan spotted the tears before his sister turned away. "Are you hurt?" he asked with genuine concern. "Aki..." He didn't understand why she would cry over such a little fall, but he loved his little sister, and didn't want anything to happen to her. "I'm sorry." He decided to make it up to her. "How would you like to go down the the apple groves and have a snack together?" He knew the little filly loved apples more than any other fruit. "Don't cry."

 Aki brightened a little. "That would be wonderful, Kynny," she said softly, using her little sister name for the colt. Of course she couldn't tell him how much she loved the idea, to be alone with him. She sniffed, smiling bravely. "I can gather more apples than you."

Kynan smiled affectionately. "That's only because you have wings, little sister." He set off towards the apple grove, little Aki trailing behind. "You're so quiet," he remarked. "What's bothering you?" Aki only seemed to stay quiet when she was upset about something. "Are you still mad at me?"

Aki looked up, startled. "Oh, no, of course not!" she blurted. "I--" Her eyes blurred with tears. She just couldn't tell her brother, even though they weren't really related, that she loved him. "It's nothing." Swallowing the lump in her throat, she ran ahead while she got herself under control.

Kynan followed his younger sister, concerned. "Aki, really...Did I say something wrong?" Catching an odd look in her eyes before she turned away, he stopped, bewildered. If she wasn't his younger sister, he could have sworn...that look in her face was so adoring, so unlike sibling love... The thought frightened him a little. Catching up to her, he asked urgently, "Aki, what's going on?"

Aki didn't turn until she had managed to get a smile onto her face and an apple in her teeth. "Here Kynny," she said blithely. "Nothing's wrong, honest." She felt horrible, lying to Kynan, but she couldn't tell the truth either. "There was just--something in my eye." She knew that was a terrible answer, but she didn't know what else to say.

Kynan circled around his sister, blocking her from retreating again. "Something is bothering you Aki, anyone can see it." He was really concerned, and a little frightened too. What was going on with Aki? "Aki, you can tell me, it's alright," he told her gently. "I won't make fun of you or anything, no matter what it is."

Aki looked down, feeling bad for worrying Kynan. "It's just--I--" She burst into tears again. "I'm afraid to tell. Do I have to tell?" Somehow she already knew the answer... "I--I think I love you." She blushed deep red, feeling completely foolish saying this to her foster brother. "I really do."

Kynan stared in surprise. "Aki..." He nuzzled her, but then stepped back with a sad look. "Aki, I don't--" Now it was his turn to feel awkward. Looking down, he traced a circle in the dirt. He loved Aki, but more as a sister...How could her tell her, crush her hopes?

Aki looked expectantly at the unicorn she had grown to love, both as a brother and now romantically..."Kynny?" Holding her breath, she watched him shift nervously, feeling apprehensive herself. They were nearly grown up...it was time she found out once and for all if there were any feelings between them. If they were meant to happen.

Kynan took a deep breath. How could he give her the "I love you as a sister, and as a friend, but there can't be anything between us" answer? His little red-maned sister meant far too much to him. What if he crushed her? "Aki," he stammered, "You've always been very very special to me, ever since we first became brother and sister." He watched her face carefully. One wrong phrase, and he could ruin everything.
