Saiena's Story
Saiena was a foundling from her earliest memories. One day while out walking, Safi stumbled over a small blue and purple basket on a forest path. After a thorough scout around the area turned up no one, Safi decided to stay with the basket to keep it safe until its family returned. However, after more than a week passed by with no one turning up, Safi came to the sad realization that the basket was on its own. However, it wasn't destined to be alone for long, as Safi brought her home to his teepee compound and decided to raise the foal as his own. When Saiena finally emerged, she was greeted by the sight of Safi, and he's been her father ever since.
Saiena's childhood was happy. At the time, Safi was still a casual resident of the Kawani Cajji's teepee compound, along with a handful of other Soquili. Saiena was the only foal, and she was consequently petted and spoiled by everyone. When her father was indulging his wanderlust, Saiena was left in the care of her father's friend Elizabeth Swann, who viewed Saiena with an almost motherly attitude. It was an unconventional arrangement, but it suited the fun-loving Saiena admirably. Her only regret was that she, unlike her father, was wingless.
As she grew, Saiena learned to make the best of her grounded state. Sure, she was unable to join Safi on his aerial adventures, but her determination and dedication allowed her to focus her running abilities; by the time she was an adolescent, she was the fastest thing on four legs for miles. And she took advantage of that speed to expand her horizons, running far and wide to see what it was in the world that so attracted her father.
It was on one of those journeys that she met Aramis.
He was like nothing she had ever seen before; tall, broad shouldered, silver haired; he spoke with a gently flowing French accent, and he swept her completely off her feet. Without even realizing it was happening, Saiena fell head over heels in love with the stallion, and believed he felt the same about her. He certainly knew how to charm a mare, that was certain!
She wanted to tell her father about her new relationship, but Aramis always managed to convince her why that was a bad idea. Their love was beautiful, but fragile, he said; bringing in family and other connections to their secret would only complicate matters and make things harder for them. Saiena always agreed, feeling that Aramis' greater experience with the world meant that he had to know what he was talking about.
Then Saiena found out she was pregnant. Multiple emotions swarmed her, but mostly joy at the fact she was going to have Aramis' baby. He was the love of her life, and she knew she had to be his. Yes, her father and lately arrived step-father had no idea she was even involved, but surely Aramis would agree that now was the time to finally share their secret relationship with the world.
When Saiena told Aramis the situation, she had no idea just how far apart their sentiments were. Aramis was very fond of Saiena, but he didn't love her; he'd never told her he was, and he had had no intentions of staying with the pretty young mare long term. A former military mount, Aramis had seen the world and then some; he loved adventure and variety. Being tied down had never been his plan.
However, when he learned he was to be a father, Aramis saw clearly the choices before him. He could leave, and abandon his first child to who knew what sort of upbringing, or he could do what he knew was honorable, stay with Saiena, and raise his child the way it was meant to be. All of this he thought, and none he said, other than to tell Saiena he agreed, it was time to tell her family.
What followed were the happiest times of Saiena's life. It turned out that she and Aramis were parents to not one, but TWO lovely boys, Vencel and Falarnon. Aramis was puffed out with pride at his sons, and took their training and upbringing very seriously. Saiena was thrilled to be able to share her love with her father; the only thorn in her side was that Safi didn't seem to think Aramis was worthy of her. However, her father clearly adored her sons, and she herself adored everyone. It was a perfect arrangement.
Which is why it stunned her the day her world shattered.
Years had passed, and she still felt things were perfect. Her father had added two more daughters to his family, and her sons had grown up into fine adults. She still worshiped the ground Aramis walked on, and felt their life was a romantic idyll for others to want for themselves. That idyll was broken when Aramis stalked up to her one day, completely out of the blue, and told her it was over and he was leaving. At first bewildered, then stunned, then finally breaking down, Saiena tried to get him to tell her what was going on, to talk to her, to work things through. They were parents together, they had been together for years, obviously what they had was worth saving! But Aramis wouldn't say more, just brushed off her concerns with tight, angry lips and icy eyes. She had no way to know that this was his idea of sparing her feelings; that his last act of 'chivalry' was to keep from her the truth, that he had never loved her and had only stayed out of a sense of duty.
It took time for reality to sink in, but when it did, it was devastating. Alone for the first time since she'd become an adult, her one true love having discarded her like so much chaff, Saiena returned home to her father Safi, the one stallion who had always been there for her her entire life. Sunk into a well of depression, Saiena is currently trying to make sense of the shambles of her life and to figure out where it all went wrong. |
