He was happy that he and Sae had chosen to build their home on the ranch but at the back with its own beast pens and with a large well appointed, forge for her. Even now he could hear her happily wacking away. He found the hammer blows soothing and he often joined her there when he was restless. Dual hammer blow then rang through the woods.
Today, though he was not restless, he was (gasp), pensive. So much had happened. Over the past years, the kids were growing up and planning families of their own. Lost daughters had been found, new children were born, new beasts had been found and tamed. There was a lot, he draped himself on the porch rocking chair as he had seen Kechiri do so many times. What indolence, he understood why she liked it so much. However, if he stayed here too long he would get stiff. Old age caught up to them all eventually. Groaning, because no one was around to hear, he unfolded his long self and grabbed his pack.
On days when he felt like this it was best to keep moving. Idleness and thought were usually a bad combination for him. However, with the return of his daughter, it was getting better. His muscles slowly relaxed if he walked in a warm up his janarim had jumped the fence and was trailing him. As was their regular everyday routine after chores in the morning. She had put a lot of time in, and he was approaching the promotion to Beast Master like his father and mother before him. It was mildly surprised that few of the next generation seemed to be choosing the beast tamer path. Though perhaps the variety was a good thing. He kept moving, his lighter footfalls mingling with the heavier ones of the janarim.
Eventually he would hop up and ride as fast as the wind but for now he wanted the exercise of running himself. When he was properly sweaty after the brisk tandem run through the bush. He swung up on certain Caernon's back and off they went moving faster and further. Upon return, both of them were happier. He had a game carcass for the family riding in front of him and he felt accomplished most of all. Something good had come from a thoughtful morning at least. He wondered where his chiddlers had gone. Would there be something someone to help him with the skinning and disembowlment? Perhaps? Perhaps not. He had no doubt that at least one of his kids was watching him from the shadows underneath a bush or structure. However, none of his little sneaks seem to want to come out. He continued on and hung the carcass an tended to his janarim and fed him the liver, heart and lungs as a very fresh treat. Cearnon had done a lot of the work after all, he planned to breed him with some of Xarthin's daughters when he aged up.
Outside of Oba, they had some of the best to janarim genetics, and he planned to continue the improvements. He was eagerly helping Ein with the new hatchlings; weighing traits and form and helping to decide which ones to keep and which ones to sell. Xarthin was doing a great job as stud bull and produced sassy but very healthy offspring of decent temperament. The influx of new genetics was doing them good. An older male, who was perfect for breeding easily to handle and trained to the nines. Stud was a good reward for such a hard working warbeast. Ushi smiled again, it was not so different for himself.
His life had changed drastically since he had met Sae. What seemed like ages ago, she had both turned everything on its head and fixed it at the same time. She rarely hid her scars, treating them like a badge of honor. He found that most admirable as he had his own. Some were of the mind and harder to see but were no less on display. He was getting better and time would help it was unlikely to occur again at least. He skinned the hanging beast and placed it in the cool room to age.
Fresh meat off a steaming carcass was good in a pinch, but he had the luxury of time, infrastructure and resources. Thus he could bring out the best in the meat and ensure that nothing went to waste. He didn't take the lives of animals lightly. Life was sacred death inescapable. Sometimes something healers and hunters knew on a soul deep level he cleaned himself up next making himself presentable for his family. His wife should be finishing up relatively soon. Ushi would get dinner going in a bit but first he wanted to read some of the book that his daughter had brought back across the sea for him on the hunting and fishing of other tribes up the coast. It was rabidly interesting and he found the dog ear creases in the corner. She had read it before they had reached home port. It came as little surprise that they enjoyed similar reading material. The fruit had not fallen far from the trunk that was for sure he loved his whole family but he was particularly fond of his pirate queen. She had gotten his skin his spots his personality and his fiery temperament. Mimicry was the highest form of flattery and it was no less true for him.
He wondered too, if and when Einsol would have her own cubs. He had given her many nieces and nephew, it was her turn now. He grinned. Now that would be very exciting and fun. Ushi stretched he had been out most of the day. He had tea and relaxed and went to check on his other beasts that he was training. He loved them all and he had a very good memory. at least when it came to critters and grudges. Kechi probably got that from him and Daanu as well. All the critters were doing well. At least he took a bit of extra time to cruise through the janarim hatchlings and reorder his preferences there. He would purchase one or two off his dad as breeding prospects later on. He was very excited. New beasts were always a good thing. It was always a new adventure. He checked out the evening tours were getting done. Then he wandered back to the house. He wondered when the new had gotten to. There was something very special about her but he couldn't quite put a finger on it yet, unfortunately. So he would spend more time with her and see they could suss it out. As Sae was not home yet he headed towards the forge. Rarely, she needed to be extricated from large projects and be reminded that she needed to sleep and eat half of being a parent and mate with keeping tabs on everyone. What would they do without him? To that end? Thal had been very quiet lately with the triplets grown to Prentice Ushi would have thought that they were likely due for another pregnancy. Terrwyn made an excellent sister in law, and she kept his brother in line so he didn't have to. She was also more than a fair shot with that bow and he was happy with that. 1237 Upon return after reminding his woman of the time he got to work on dinner. He had some left over tubers and dried fish so he made a classic matorian dish which consisted of fish and seaweed broth with some fermented bean past. It was both healthy and flavourful, fortifying after a long day but not too heavy so they would have trouble sleeping at night.
The pot boiled and steamed and he took some joy in the simple acts of everyday moments. In order to feel fulfilled in a day he in particular like most of his kids needed some sort of movement and mental stimualation. They were not a people of sitting inside all day, he felt deprived when he didn't get enough fresh air. But because of this the moments after when all of his needs were met he felt a special sort of contentment deeper than those people who lived only in their heads.
The broth was sending up deliciously fragrant steam now and he purred nearly. He boiled the tubers and added garlic and spices and made a quick and easy gravy to make them a tad more appealing. Soon enough he strained the brother and had the food ready for when Sae entered the house. For now he would cut up some bread and chop some fresh veggies to help use up the left over dip from the other night.
It would be a most satisfying meal and he was looking forward to sharing it with his mate as well as whichever of their children trailed in. It was more rare for Kechiri but the others seemed to be close enough to home. 1516

It was dawn in Jauhar, he had come here to see what critters he could capture on a solo mission. Sometimes he liked to pit himself against the jungle, against the wild and against lonliness. Different parts of his mind activated when he was alone in the wild. He became one of the animals in mind if not form. Sadly to his knowledge there was no shapeshifter magic or he would be all over that. The closest they came was the subtle shift of Shifter tribe skin and eyes which was pretty skookum in and of itself. His ear twitched at a noise nearby. He was swinging indolently in his hammock, it was just past predawn and the sun was peeking up over the mountains and starting to gild the crowns of the ancient forest trees in gold. It was the best time of day and since he had no chores to do, he took a deep breath to enjoy it. The myriad of birds serenaded him, he was far from home and they sounded completely different then the others and there were pointedly more of them. They were not letting each other get a song in edgewise and the melody kept folding in over itself in a roiling cascade of birdsong. He yawned and rolled in his hammock. It was less comfortable on his stomach but he had made eyeholes in strategic positions so he could peer down at the critters below. Most of the radaku in this part of the forest in particular were dark of coat with panther like spots and he thought this was a rather fetching concept. He wanted two, one for his son as a peace offering. Having him as a Dad could be challenging some days and one for his cousin Ultear who he felt would do really well with a radaku companion. It remained to be seen however if he would find the right animals on this expedition. It was never a guarantee whether you were hunting for familiars or for meat. Familiars being somewhat harder and easier. Your goal wasn't to kill them, but your heart was lighter too because of that. Despite a good twenty minutes of watching, nothing interesting passed beneath the hammock, he was better off setting up a bait station, though even then radaku could be pretty cagey. It wasn't recommended for beginners to hunt them alone as they could well outnumber their lone hunter but well he was not a beginner. There were precautions that were not in any way optional and he would ensure his safety. It wouldn't do to have reached this ripe old age just to fail quickly in an unfamiliar forest. Saeruin would kick his butt when she passed at a ripe old age and she would never let him forget his folly. He would of course do his part and haunt her and the children that was by no mistake a given. He was pretty sure that he would be able to talk to Einsol and Daanu somehow even as a ghostly rememberence of the man he had once been. It was a moot point because he would be very careful not to have anything untoward like that happen. A splash echoed in the water nearby, reminding him that he would be fishing or hunting for his breakfast as well. He extricated himself from the hammock and shimmied onto the tree branch supporting it. He zipped the bug netting back up, they were more vicious here than anywhere else he had frequented. All he could say was at least it wasn't Yael of the poisonous air, here everything but the air seemed to have some sort of inconveniant poison. But it was also so very full of life that he was convinced there was nowhere else on the planet quite like it. All he could say was at least it wasn't Yael of the poisonous air, here everything but the air seemed to have some sort of inconveniant poison. But it was also so very full of life that he was convinced there was nowhere else on the planet quite like it. He got himself handily out of the tree, did some warm up battle exercises then grabbed his favorite fishing pole and went to the lake that was nearby, it was connected to a rive and should have plenty of fish. He loved fishing it was slow for most of his family but there were big perks to living on the beach in Matori, no matter how busy you were there was always fishing that could be done at some point. Less in the spring as the beasts were birthing and it was all hands on deck as opposed to the rest of the year where it was steady training duties and breeding duties. He loved his life just how it was. Though he did hope to have a few more kids one day. Ushi set himself up on the shore with a broad trunked ancient tree at his back, and tossed his bait into the water. He settled down to wait and let his eyes roam the shore and trees across from him. There was something so pensive about fishing and he enjoyed the deep thought he was able to achieve. He missed Sae and Ein and the kids but sometimes it was good to just be alone for a bit and sort of recalibrate and reset with only your own thoughts to keep you company. His morning of fishing was productive, he had caught three and released one that was too small to eat. He inhaled the fresh air and felt right in the feeling that he was exactly where he was meant to be, doing exactly what he was meant to be doing. This was what he had quested for his whole life, besides a desire to rule the world that was, but taking care of ones' family took too much time for a world ruler. That and his family was way more important than the rest of the world combined for him, though he did enjoy the plethora of critters that the world had to offer it was the people he could give or take besides the few that were honored enough to be called his friends.
He cleaned and gutted the fish, removed their heads and their scales and returned that which he would not consume back to the water to continue the circle of life. Then he set about getting a fire going near the water's edge and skewered the fish onto carved sticks for easy rotisserie. He grinned as the smell of the wild herbs he had rubbed into the fish emitted a light and seductive food fragrance when they were exposed to the heat and coals. Food cooked and eaten outside for some reason always tasted better than that which had been prepared inside. He was not sure why but it was definitely a hard and fast rule that applied in most situations. The only bad thing that eating outside usually brought was a plethora of biting insects and jauhar was no exception. The fish when it was done, tasted succulent and went down a treat. The juices ran down his chin and the skin was crisp and perfect. He was eyeing the second fish when he felt like he was being watched from the bracken not far away from his fire. Glowing yellow eyes that idly reminded him of his Wife's. Slowly he stood so as to not appear as a target as a two more sets of eyes appeared, one a startling green and the next a blood red. Judging from the emerging dark coats, these were the very beasts he had come to find.
"Come to tango boys?" He grinned and grabbed his rope. Radaku were faster than the beasts he was used to. Though just as deadly in other ways. He and Thal had an affinity for the toothsome ones, just as they were toothsome themselves. Ein was good with all critters and Tethys his handsome younger brother who had also inherited their Mother's waterling spots (unlike Thal who had Dad's ice crystals), was more attuned to the smaller reptilian folks, though Ushi was pretty sure he either had or would be okay with a radaku. He himself thought it would be cool to have one as well, might as well take the set then. His smile widened and rather than dance it out right there. He took the fish and cut it into three.
"We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way.' He told them in a low but male voice. His voice wasn't quite as deep as Thal's but it was deeper than the average earthling. He liked it, Sae liked it and Sae liking it was all that mattered really.
A scuffle and a few hog ties later he sat back bleeding from a cut or two with three hobbled young radaku before him. They were too young yet to be of breeding age, if it had been the whole pack he would have been scurrying up a tree and taking them down one at a time.
"This is the thanks I get for sharing breakfast with you ungrateful beggers." 1502

Brigands and Boss (+6) He was heading for the gap in Awat. The easiest way to get into Oba unless one went by sea. His daughter would be available to take him back by sea but she was currently on duty so he was traveling by land. It was slow and hot going. Sometimes he wondered what his Dad was thinking when he had lived in Oba for so long. He patted his loyal mercury silver and black mount Cerenon. He was such a good boy and he unlike Ushiwa seemed to be excited to be heading back to Oba. He supposed he would be excited too on the return journey to be heading back to Matori and his own climate. The wind howled past and disturbed his long blue hair which he and most of the rest of the family barring a few of his pretty sisters had inherited from their Dad's iceling heritage. Now that was a truly unkind place, Zena was so cold. The air hurt your face there especially in the colder months. He supposed being too hot was not all that fun either but it beet freezing to death in his estimation.
It was sweltering, even the wind was hot. He was tired and cranky and in no mood to deal with anything except getting to his in. Land travel was by rote; slow. He sighed. He missed his family. Saeruin had been too busy to go with him and it put him in a sour mood. Travel with her felt effortless. Travel without her felt like he pulled a new tooth out every mile he put between them. He was afraid that his resting crank face would scare away the wildlife.
He was coming up to the canyon heading into Awat. He looked sharply to his left and right. Something felt off and Cerenon was snorting and mincing back and forth. Something was wrong. This was the perfect spot for brigands and he was alone and tired. What a day, what a day, he knew he should have waited to go by sea. Yup. There they were the little no good, jobless prats. Heads poking up over the rocks first then they rushed in and surrounded him. He was an experienced and deadly man, he could hold his own but he was also quite sure he was coming down with a cold, that and the heat made him weak. He wished his twin was here, Ein would rip them a new one, he was hoping to manage but alas it was six to two including his janarim. He hoped he wasn't dismounted it would be bloody. They rushed in and he used his weapons to keep them back and Cerenon held his own for a while, but he was tired and thus more prone to making mistakes. He did get unseated at one point and was kicked a few times before the janarim knocked them off. The pair sent the brigands scurrying off but they had managed to get one of his money purses. Darn. He was also more black than blue now. Wah. 516

Me Time Solo After finally making it through Awat, after a bit of recovery time and making doubly sure that Cerunon was not injured in that last frakas, Ushi had made for Jatine and after a long and boring trip across the desert with all the heat and Zores looking at him like he was a delicious snacklett he had made it. It was he had to admit a beautiful and vibrant place. He did have one zore still following him. He was tempted to try and tame it though they were not really the kind of pet you wanted around considering they could only eat rotten meat and tended to defecate on themselves when they were startled, though it might be fun for people to look at him like a herald of death, maybe he wouldn't get accosted so much. It wasn't his fault he looked pretty and had money, at least it was money he worked for. The brigands hadn't gotten his two back up money pouches which lived in special pockets in his boots. Suckers hadn't had time to check there before he and his janarim ran them off. Though he was significantly less pretty than normal. Wah.
He found the best looking Inn the "Dancing Scorra," and booked himself the best room, a small hut with an attached stable for his janarim, these people knew what was up after all. This was a fishing town and a vacation place for many, just his cup of tea at this point in time. He was going to enjoy himself come hell or high water. First on his list was a brisk walk about to orient himself and see what the immediate area had to offer in the way of food and amenaties, then he returned to his little table and lene to enjoy the rest of the book his daughter had given him. He had only been able to read snippets of it at home with all the hustle and bustle that constantly happened at the ranch.
He folded the back cover over the center and held the book reverently. Kechiri really had such fine taste in reading material he would have to ask her to find more literary treasures. Next up he had booked a kind of hunt for nobles that he had personally never gone on before. It used predatory birds of varying sizes and he had to admit that he had great fun chasing down small game with the birds and his janarim who thought that they should have gone after bigger prey. That night he had a fancy dinner of seared meat and local seasonal vegetables. He wished that Sae had been there with him to enjoy the delight that the food had been, even the sauce had been eye opening. After dinner he was hot so he went to one of the many outdoor pools and floated around until he forgot he was in Oba. Cerenon lounged at the edge of the pool with his tail dipped in the water. The next morning he had a hot bath, some truly fantastic coffee and breakfast and then he walked to his massage. It was a short vacation but he felt like it was completely worth it too. 540

Shifty Business He was back in Matori after a long journey to Oba, he had made sure to spend some quality time at home with family for about a month before heading back out on the road, he wasn't sure why but this phase of his life was awfully restless, he had everything he could possibly want but what was calling to him the most right now was wandering. Just as simple and as complicated as you could please. Of course he was always happy when his family joined him but when the urge came upon him late at night usually snapping his eyes open with glee and urgency and they couldn't come he found his feet on the beaten trail and sometimes quite off of it. So off he went with a few fine critters for sale. All had been hand gentled and tamed by himself. He knew each by name and temper and touch. Just as taming ought to be. He had taken great care and time and selected only the finest candidates and now they were ready to find loving new homes that would bring them glory and many happy days henceforth. He was glad to see them at peak all just needed to get to know their new masters and carry on with their bonding. Their training was a hundred percent complete all they really needed was the experience that miles could bring them or the time to form into great companions unrivaled in his not so humble opinion unless maybe from others trained by his close kin and kith. He set up his stall and had every critter looking their best He had completed some brisk business before they showed up.
A more lackluster pack of idiots he had thought he had never seen before. His eyes nearly crossed as they moved to his stall, carrying on like a pack of peacocks preening for as yet nonexistant pea hens, they probably shared a single braincell between the three of them. One of full blood Matorian water stock and what looked like a water and lightning hybrid and a waterling with the barest smatter of alk in his bloodline that surely looked like he might be related to Syaaryn, his prospective brother in law but lacking all of Syaa's charm, brains and joy de vivre.
He sighed. This was going to be super unpleasant. They marched right up to the pitch black janarim that looked at them ambivilantly.
"Can we ride him?" The water boy asked. "No." He replies stolidly. "Well what if we were hoping to buy him?" The water and lightning male flashed creepy bright purple eyes Ushiwa's way with an arrogant sway to his head that if he were a critter would have had Ushi take him for such a long run he would forget his sass. He stood. "You are not going to buy him." Salazar was too fine a critter for sops such as this that wouldn't know the right end of a scale brush if it knocked them between the eyes. "Why yes we are, we want to test him out, make sure he is solid broke or are you having us on? Why bring him to a beast market if he is not for sale?" "He is for sale," Ushi squared his shoulders and crossed his broad arms over his body. Salazar snorted, sensing the energy in the place turn up more than just a notch at the posturing and bluffing that was so obviously one sided despite the skewed numbers before him. He pawed the ground anxiously, feeling like he might have to come to his Master's (or so he though Ushi was), rescue post haste. Despite the wide leather collar and chain holding him to the hitching post. He swayed and tugged against the chain. Ushi had checked everything and he knew that Sala wouldn't be able to hurt himself the collar was designed to take the strain and spread it to prevent injury should large beasts spook during a storm or try to trample unwarry idiots.
"There there," He put a calming hand up to the beast and stood close to him. "Don't let these young fools upset you, I'd cart you home before I sold you to the likes of them."
"You would give up on good honest coin to save your beast from going home with us?" The lightning hybrid sneared harshly. "Aye I would you are not even fit to look upon him never mind ruin his good temperament with ill handling. Begone."
He would have preferred to loom over them but this janarim specifically had been breed from ancient protective stock that was the finest that had come through his Father's breeding world, from a shifter woman who had studded out her fantastic brown beast to them at one point. Ushi had minced quite hard about selling Salazar to begin with but they were short on space and he was a great sales prospect.
The boys postured and Ushi was ready to forgo this sale for the pathetic brawl that while satisfying for him would be horribly easy and done in less time then it would have taken to dicker on a price between them. There was just no way that these boys would be leaving with any critter from his stand, nevermind one of the beasts that in all of his years he had been most proud of. Sala might have a plain hide but it was rich as midnight in winter and shone with utter health. The spark in his eyes was real and undiminished in the bright sun.
The lads rushed him and Ushi clocked one smartly on the head, he wouldn't hurt the boys but he would be teaching them a lesson. The hybrid rushed next and Ushi bent him over in a most undignified way and tanned his back side. "Run off to your Mommy." The alk blooded boy took one look and calmly walked away, dragging his two friends behind him. "There, Ein would be proud of us for not giving them more of a lesson than they deserve, don't you think boy?" He patted Salazar's thick neck. "We will find a proper home for you never you worry." 1041

Ushi was helping to train a young prentice in the art of beast charming. The boy had had trouble finding an instructor in Oba for some unknown reason as of yet and had contacted his Dad directly. Apparently they had known each other when Kiyelt still lived there. Or at least he had known the kids parents at the time. Ushi didn't see why the whole family had to move all the way here for the kids training. He wasn't sure what he would have done in the same position but he had been fortunate to have people in the same position in his family so it had never been a problem.
Thal was usually better with stuff like this, so was Tethys but Thal was hunting and Tethys was off adventuring with his treasure hunting friend and Ushi was here because of the janarim breeding project. He kind of felt sorry for the kid that had to put up with his salty butt. He was certainly not everyone's cup of strong tea with barely a hint of sugar and cream. But as the kid had little choice in the matter this was what it was. The boy had the typical fireling skin hair and crystals with the faintest water spots leaning toward a very mildly mixed fire/water heritage. But he looked high born enough and carried himself arrogantly. Which was fair, their own family was of Zenan nobility but they paid little head to it. The boy had quite a few crystals on his face and he caught him giving a passing Gajeel who was obviously trying to find Kynin the side eye.
"Lad, the lesson is over here." He knew the boy was curious but they were not here to oogle others on the ranch. Ushi's time with his skills and experience was very valuable and the boy should make the most of it if he could at least learn anything. They had started small with trying to get a perzi to go through an obstacle course. Problem being that the kids energy was all over the place and resulted in jerky excited movements and he was also prone to temper tantrums. The regular farm way to deal with that was to do chores until you could concentrate on what was going on in front of you.
"If you can't focus here, you could clean the barn, or feed animals..if you feel you are not ready to concentrate." The glare he got in return set his own soul on fire and also made him smile. Perhaps there was just a bit of himself in his young pupil anyhow. "Alright then focus, you need to take a moment to collect yourself. Animals are very sensitive and they can pick up on things through your mood, emotions and body movements. It is a language that some people have since forgotten how to speak. You are to relearn it. For example." He rushed at the boy flailing. The kid spooked and rushed to the other side of the pen, the perzi looked at them both like they were crazy. "This is sort of what you are doing, how did it make you feel?"
"Uh, uncomfortable?" The prentice replied with a bit of a self conscious look, "I don't have to do barn chores do I?" "No, but you must listen a might closer to what I am telling you to do. I don't speak for no reason boy, every snippet is a valuable bit of advice that you would do very well to heed." A chorus of barks, brays and roars announced the probable arrival of the young male's parents on the ranch. Ushi had not met them yet but from the cross eyed look his father had given him there was something potentially special coming.
He looked up and saw the tall willowy forms of the nobles, rubber necking at all of the critters and commotion they were now surrounded by. The one thing on the ranch was that no one could sneak up on them. Kiyelt had just bought more land which they had all worked hard for and they were expanding. They were for real going to have their own mini village soon. Ushi was glad that his place was more to the center of the property and tucked in a corner too boot. He and Sae had blessed privacy at least when their kids were not all in attendance.
He greeted the boys parents and continued on with the lesson with them hanging off the fence watching. The boy made a bit of progress but his parents began critiquing him and telling him what he could do better as opposed to Ushi doing the actual teaching. He cleared his throat and gave them what he thought was a mild glare, though even those were potent from his rbf face. Or so the family told him.
"I would appreciate if you let me teach the boy, as that is my job, if you wish you may comment after the lesson has ended but in no way are you actually helping him at the moment."
The boy's parents looked offended and the woman laid a hand on her irrate husbands arm.
"You telling me what to do with my own heir?" The male asked with acid in his tone.
"No, I'm telling you what is permited on my property to do with my animals and to the detriment of my lesson." It was best to deal with people like this in a clear cut fashion. "Should you take umbridge with my teaching style, you are welcome to leave the premises." And they would not be getting a refund for wasting his time. He did however understand now how the boy behaved and reacted so to his environment he probably had never been able to think for himself and otherwise reacted out of some sort of frustration. Ushi dealt with animals not people but some of the behaviour was the same. He let the parents know that there was a comfortable outdoor sitting area where they could wait for their son.

Bookstore Solo Ushi was out for a walk. He didn't really have a destination in mind for once and he walked the beaches until he came to a place that looked interesting. He had never been to the local book store before. But he thought that today might just be the right day to take a peak, maybe he could find a book for himself or Sae or Kechi or anyone else in the family that he might find something for. He took a big breath and opened the door, a bell over it jingled and a beautiful lightning lady looked up from the desk and greeted him. She looked familiar somehow, something in her face, the reason became clear when a water male appeared from reading in a corner and he also looked familiar. "You would be Rexonyx's parents yeah? I never knew you had a bookstore." They nodded their agreement and he smiled. "He is a good kid." Polite, quiet dependable. He hung out with the boys sometimes. He drifted to the back of the store, not really wishing to talk anymore he just wanted to drink the place in with his eyes. Kechi had got him addicted to reading so thus he was here looking for new material. He snagged a woven basket and hung it over a broad forearm for easy book placement. He was astounded at how much he liked reading, even if he had to wear those little half moon spectacles if the writing was small. There was something so solid about books, like a little cure for boredom that you could carry around in your pocket, and sometimes a people repeller. Please leave me alone I am busy reading, so engrossed in this novel, do not disturb me. How it had taken him so long to realize this was beyond him. Thank the gods for kids. He picked a few up and parussed the back cover, noting the heft and fabric used for the cover.
He found one about a lost janarim that interested him and he put it in his basket. There were a few more that might be okay but none of them really captured his notice yet. So he moved on to the next shelf. It was broad and made of sturdy wood, stained in a nice color. A warm rich tone. It felt homey and he wondered which stain they used. He might use it on the small cabin he wanted to make one day for himself and Sae.
Ushi took a deep breath and took in the beautiful fragrance of all of the books. Paper had such charm to it. New paper and old paper smelled completely different but both were equally charming in their own way. Plus books were the easiest and most efficient way to travel, at least within your mind. He found that he enjoyed the self driven hallucinations from someone else's mind transferred through paper and back into thought. He would have to come to the book store more often. 504

Squall Solo It had been a long day at sea. He had been fishing most of the morning on his moderate sized boat when out of nowhere as if pulled by devils a big storm came and ravaged him. It was all he could do to keep afloat in the massive swells, he was reasonably sure the only thing that saved him was being relatively close to a small island. He fought the sea tooth and nail through tears and blood and finally got his poor boat landed. He dragged it up as far as he could and moored it with its rope around a thick set tree that would hopefully hold back its deaceased boat shaped brother from the ravages of the storm. He patted the trunk and promised to give it a good gift later if it would just hold out for him now in the face of the mighty miserable black cloud that was bearing down on them like a charging quhar. He hastily built a shelter as best as he could between three thick trees and hunkered down to sit in misery and eat raw fish to keep alive. At least the sushi was fresh caught an hour ago before this whole mess started. He knew his family would be worried and Kechi would be out searching for him in her ship as soon as the storm let her leave her mooring at Home Harbour. It was good to know his family would not abandon him to the wild. They also knew that he was savvy at bush and sea and would also be trying to make his way home at the earliest possible opportunity.
The wind howled and gusted and otherwise had a downright tantrum which he knew Einsol would be frowning at for its bad behaviour. He might be away from his family but he could feel them all with him. His Dad would slap a hand on his broad shoulder and tell him all would be well. If the weather was all that bad he would never have survived Oba which had just as harsh a climate as a storm at sea in the wrong conditions. His Mom would put tea on and feed them to within an inch of their lives. His wife would ciddle up to him special when he got home and bury her face in his shoulder as she liked to do and inhale the wild he brought in on his skin. She would keep him warm and sooth his inner angst until the next morning when life would start anew with the dawn.
It was times like this that he wished for more children. To see the light shine in their eyes as he held them for the first time in his arms and wondered at what a gift Sae had worked hard to bring into the world for him. He loved her so much it made him hurt all over. In a good way. But it was true love at its very finest. And what better time to think about one's family then in a massive life threatening sea squall huh?
Kechi would ask him for details about every moment of being stranded. Daanu would likely listen raptly and write notes in the book she carried with her everywhere. Ushiruin would practice his sea magic trying to fight the storm and failing because no amount of magic could fix a beast like this, (or so he thought with the information he had). And Elaxi would probably hide under his arm in terror hearing the stories of his adventures. She had always been a shy thing. Thal's infernal triplets would ask him about this night for the rest of his life he was more than sure. They would likely ride out into the storm swinging their shirts above their heads in pure and utter bliss at being in a monstrously dangerous situation. It was their happy place in the midst of utter chaos, confusion and potential death. He wasn't sure how they got that way but oh well. It was his Brother's problem, he had enough kid issues of his own. Though his relationship with his son was vastly improving now that he had found an easier way to communicate with him.
Kechi and Daanu remained closest to him, though he was hoping that Elaxi would come to trust them as she had before she was kidnapped. He was less wracked with guilt now that she was home and safely back in their care. He put out extra critters at night as gate and yard watch. The place was crawling with security, no one would ever take her from him again, he thought as he looked out at what he could see of the ocean. The swells were larger and he was glad he had been able to get off of it when he had or he would be swimming in it now. He should have brought a snaptrotter along with him for help. They were dead handy in a storm, right crafty and strong swimmers, a best friend in the roiling sea and no small amount of company that he longed for right now. He sighed. It was lonely at sea alone and the older he got the more he didn't like his freedoms being taken away from him. Mostly to harrass his own family for as long as he wished and whenever he wished. The storm however was a temporary annoyance that he would and could overcome given enough time for it to die down and the water to return to regular smallish waves. He rolled his eyes as the storm carried on. Then his attitude changed and he decided to embrace the storm like he used to. To not worry for a while and just live in the darn moment. Something Thal had always been able to do, that Ein was good at but Ushi's thinker hardly ever let him do, unless he had been out in the bush for long enough. 1005

Ushi was reluctant to do what he needed to do. A boar like creature that his Dad had brought on had gored his leg and he had a bit of a scrape. Said creature was now bacon, however the wound was starting to turn red and inflamed and he did not relish the big scar or the chance of amputation. The biggest issue was his favorite doctor was occupied with other things and was not around to doctor her twin. Besides Ein, Ushi despised having to go to healers. He had a natural mistrust of them but the would was turning red and inflamed and he couldn't put it off any longer. His mother would have spanked him had she known. She did not care that he was old. She would put her children's health above everything and rightfully so thought that her children should as well. Ushi growled as he hobbled his way to Cerenon and swung himself up with a grunt of pain. Why walk with a bum leg when you had upteen number of beasts that would walk for you?
He disliked going to healers in general. Ein had gave him such looks for such a long time when he would put it off, half the time she noticed and just knew that he had an issue. She was an amazing woman and he was so glad that she was his sister. His mother was a beast specialist but she wasn't available to help him either, she and Dad were having date week which they could manage now that the farm ran itself without them for certain periods of time. They had lucked out on having so many beast tamer kids. They really had been lucky. He was currently resigned to his fate. The pain had gotten quite more severe over yesterday and he knew it was the responsible thing to do. The trip to the closest local healer was quick enough and relatively uneventful, he was grateful that he had his trustiest mount, some of the youngbloods would put up a bit of a fight still.
He hitched Cerenon to the post outside and reluctantly rapped on the thick wood door. He had to admit the healer's home was a nice and well kept place with a small kitchen garden set beside the wooden cabin. The door opened with a hearty creek and Ushi was treated to the sight of a young wind water male who looked curiously at him. He still looked capable for his age, bright blue eyes, blue skin and blonde hair with small pink round crystals, clothed in loose fitting dark brown robes with a few gold hued accessories here and there. It looked good on him and was probably condusive to his career. He hadn't seen many wind water hybrids.
"Can I help you?" The hybrid asked politely.
"Uh, yes please," Ushi tilted his leg so that the healer could see the wound. The young male immediately crouched by Ushiwa's leg and gently touched the flesh around the reddened wound. "Hmm looks like infection is setting in, when did the injury occur?" "Er, two days ago." He knew he was probably going to catch heck for that, it was always smarter to treat wounds immediately before anything worse happened but he knew he wasn't in horrible danger quite yet and there had been so much to do and he had doctored it himself as best as he could with the healing salves on hand but that hadn't been enought, that brutes tusks must have had something nasty on them to result in this kind of wound. How delightful that was. He rolled his eyes in his mind at the thought so that the healer wouldn't think it was him being cheeky.
"Ahh, I see, you should have come sooner perhaps but it should still be treatable. How did it occur?"
"One of those yaeli pig things gored me and it scraped my calf, I did put salve on it but was too busy perhaps to treat it properly. They had had a few emergencies on the ranch in the past few days and he had been most preoccupied handling it all with so many of the king pins away.
"Yes, good, come in." The healer led him into the hut. Wooden struts made an attractive pattern as they supported the roof. There was a large kitchen, no doubt used to help with herbs and making healing things. The kitchen flowed into a cozy seating area no doubt for consultations which was where he was led and beyond was an annex which he suspected the males bedroom was. Very neat place, very well constructed too. Ushi was impressed. The healer bade him sit in a comfy chair and gave him a stool to put his leg up on for further inspection.
"I will make you a salve and a concoction. Drink the concoction twice a day at regular intervals for ten days and keep the wound clean, bandage if you have to be somewhere at all icky, in a few days keep the bandage off and let the wound get air, it should help dry it off, if an abcess forms use a hot compress to encourage the puss to drain."
He wrote all of the instructions down on a little sheet and cleaned the wound in a most unpleasant way. "It really is better to see to things like this early and properly, it would have saved you a great deal of trouble and pain, but I do understand that sometimes best practices are not possible." Especially since the healer's current visitor looked much more comfortable in the bush than in a town. Poor guy was nervous. Radian hadn't been a healer for very long but he had been apprenticed to one for a long time. He knew that some people were just reluctant to go to a healer and would hold off until it was obvious they were in trouble by that time however it was thrice as difficult to fix the problem and took twice as long to correct, so long as the patient had not waited too long. "Yeah, there were emergencies I had to attend to, and our healers were away so you were the closest to the ranch." He shrugged. He would drink the nasty concoction, hopefully it tasted better than the ones Einsol made but he doubted it. Most unfortunate the taste of most medicines, so unfair. Why couldn't they at least make them taste palatable. Though from what he understood most medicine was actually some form of dilute poison and plant based poisons were bitter so as to discourage animals from eating them. He saw why it would be effective too, noxious stuff.
The healer tinkered away and an handed him a large green bottle that was wider at the base and tall and skinny in the neck. He thanked the male and paid him for that and the small cylindrical jar of salve to smear on the wound. They he was out the door and on his way home to have a bit of a rest. It was a rest day for him and his chores and health duties were done so it was time to detox from an awfully horribly week. He had dark circles under his eyes and Sae was at work, he had no idea where the kids had gotten off to so he could do whatever he wanted. What he wanted was a swift and effective nap before he faced whatever else he had to do that day. He took his medicine as directed. It was still nasty and he applied the salve on his wound. He didn't bandage it yet because their bedding was clean but he did stick that leg out of the bedding so that it didn't muck up the sheets they had just cleaned. He felt better with the medicine in his system, at least he had gone before more serious infection had taken hold. Kechiri would mock him forever if he had to hobble around with a peg leg.
He tugged the covers up around his shoulders. They were thin and well worn and incredibly comfortable. He listened to the quiet sounds of the house and let his mind slowly drift into nothingness, letting his thoughts file past but not lingering on any too long. He imagined himself to be in the bole of a great tree and very safe from all the beasts and people that wandered outside of that imaginary tree. It was highly cozy and the meditation aided him to dreamland. When he woke he was refreshed. He bandaged his leg and went to do some critter checks as was his constant habit while on the ranch at least for the animals he was responsible for taking care of. This year had been particularly lucrative and he had a plethora of very very fine beasts in his care. It always made his chest swell with pride to see them all, to know that they left here to their new homes with the finest training possible. They rarely had any returns and usually if they did it was the owners mistakes that could either be corrected or they would reaccept the critter, retrain them and then send them to a better home later. 1561
