Ika

Pronunciation: Eye-ka Race: 1/2 Alk 1/2 Leaf Gender: Female Parents: Ariya & Ujana Siblings: Subira, Eurig, & Ujiri Physical Description: While physically Ika may appear to take more after her earthling side she's still rather large for a hybrid. She's muscular from an active lifestyle with an ample bust, courtesy of her mothers.
Personality: Ika's a sweetheart when she wants to be and a devil when she doesn't give af about you. As such it's easy to tell that this little sprite gained all of her intellect from her mama Ariya, while managing to inherit Ujana's lack of impulse control. She's just smart enough to get out of trouble, while still somehow being dumb enough to get right back into it again. Not that it seems to bother Ika; she's as stubborn as the day is long, and simply refuses to take 'no' as an answer. If she wants to do something she'll do it, regardless of what her mothers want and if they try to stop her she'll raise hell.
She's headstrong, independent, and a wrecking ball, but that doesn't mean Ika isn't tender. Even when she's so mad at her brother she could strangle him she'll still come back to see what he's doing throughout the day, if only to tell him what he's doing wrong.

Prentice Class Solo - Sacred Heart
There had always been doubts as to where Ika’s true passion lay.
As a child she had shown an innate gift for magic. It hadn’t been something that she needed to hide necessarily, but in her heart Ika tried to block it out. Neither of her mother’s were gifted magically and while that was common in Ariya’s world it was just as likely to be reversed in Ujana’s. In her youth Ika could lift little streams of water from the river just by hovering her hand over it and when she concentrated hard enough on her palm she could make a little fire spark. Surely if she had nurtured her talents then she may have made something of herself and yet, like a flame in the wind, Ika’s magic blew out.
Ika’s aunt knew her way around spells and her grandfather was a healer. So, surely, it wasn’t so unheard of for her to develop an affinity. And yet, maybe it was because of those two that she had tried her best to suppress it. There were days when Ika would grow so frustrated with training that she would lash out at a tree only to have a great stream of fire come from her fist. Before anyone could find out she would snuff out the flames with dirt or water, whatever happened to be closest, but the mental fear remained. Pretend it never happened. It. NEVER. Happened.
There was no great love in her for her mother’s family, but neither was there hate. Ika had simply spent so long in Jauhar that the concept of knowing them enough to form an opinion was lost. And so to think she’d inherited their problems….their magic...was enough to make her sick.
She wanted to be strong like her mothers. Ujana was tough enough to heft a grown man over her shoulder and send him flying out the door of her tavern! Ariya could bulldoze her way through a mob if she wanted to. And did either one of them have to rely on magic to do it? No. They needed only the strength of their body and soul to make it happen. Ika had worked so hard to develop her muscles and the inner strength necessary to properly wield them. Thinking about how she might lose it all just because of something she couldn’t control was maddening. If there came a day where she had to train with her magic, just so that she wouldn’t become a danger to others, then Ika would but until then it was as good as dead to her. As a young teenager magic represented weakness; it meant a loss of physical prowess and a power that wasn’t her own. Magic was unpredictable, wild, and just as likely to harm as it was to heal. Her grandfather had a firm understanding of that, but how long had it taken him to get there? And did Ika care to wait that long? Ujiri was already so far ahead of her. It was heartbreaking when Subira had left, but inevitable, honestly. Ika had always known her older sister would move on; that was normal. It was also understandable when Eurig made his way into the world, but now that Ujiri was making strides towards his own goals Ika felt even more lost than she had before. Did he ever struggle with magic the same way she did? Had he ever felt it’s call, the whispers in his sleep, voices from beyond tempting him into grand acts of destruction? And even if he had, would Ujiri really act on it? Her brother was so stupid that he would likely ignore it and do whatever he wanted instead. In a way she envied him. In his own way Ujir had found his path, carved it out just the way he wanted, and charged headlong into the void. In his shadow Ika had allowed herself to be turned around and right before her very eyes the path before her had faded until only dust remained.
It had taken her a while to navigate life, but eventually a light had shown for her in the form of a passing Alkidike. The woman was small compared to Ariya, but still obscenely large to Ika. She stopped off by the tavern for a quick drink on her way back to Chibale and once she saw Ika she’d struck up a conversation.
The warrior’s name was Sena and her markings reminded the youthful girl of ripples in a still pond. She held a patience that seemed beyond her ageless features, but something in the woman’s eyes made Ika wary. They weren’t the eyes of a kind person; rather, one of a huntress who had chased prey for many, many years. Still, she was kind enough when she spoke to the teen and when she asked about Ika’s apprenticeships she was surprised to find there wasn’t much of one to speak of.
She’d thought it would end there. Once Sena had finished her drink she left, but a few days later she came back to order once again. Ika noticed it was becoming a routine; at the end of every moon phase Sena would appear, hang around for a few hours to talk and eat her fill, then leave for another month.
Ika wasn’t expecting her to come any sooner.
Nor was she expecting company during her training.
So when the older Alkidike randomly approached Ika from behind the teenager panicked and flung out her hand, subconsciously sending a spark of fire at the other woman. All at once Ika’s fear consumed her. What did I do?! She was- blocking it?! Just as quickly as the panicked flame came at her, Sena raised a blade to defend herself and Ika couldn’t help being drawn in by it’s glow. As soon as the magical fire touched it the steel shone with a brilliant light and when Sena brought it back down it was as if it had consumed the fire itself.
“So you’re a mage.” She surmised with a half-smile.
“I’m so sorry - I didn’t know you were there or I wouldn’t have-”
“I know, I wasn’t blaming you.” Sena raised her blade once again, but this time just enough to sheath it at her side. “You don’t have much control and if that’s the most you can do you’ll be piss poor on the battlefield.”
Ika’s brows scrunched up as she shifted from outright confusion into frustration. “I’m not a mage and that’s all I can do because that’s all I want to do. I didn’t train for...for this!” She held out her hands, unsurprised and yet angered that her magic chose not to show itself. When she wanted it it did nothing, and when she tried to suppress it the ugly thing reared its head. What was she supposed to do? “I just want to fight; I want to be able to protect people like my mothers do, but as long as I’ve got this curse I’m only going to be a liability.”
“Do you think I’m a liability?” Ika paused and looked over to Sena, who stood as calm as a moonless night. The taller woman took a step forward and offered the teenager her hand. “I’ve been watching you, Ika; ever since the first day we met. You have a lot of potential, but without the proper teacher you won’t get anywhere. You have just enough magic to be an asset, but not enough to qualify as a sorcerous. Following the ways of the earthling won’t get you anywhere. If you train with me I can show you how to be a Sacred Heart.”
Follow Aisha? In all honesty Ika had thought about it from time to time. She’d stubbornly refused the dreads as a child because she didn’t like the way they made her scalp feel. Even if she’d never thought about following Mama Ariya’s people into battle their belief in Aisha ran strong in her, and the thought of becoming a Sacred Heart had merit.
“You can help me?”
“I can, but only if you want it. I’m not asking for a prisoner; I’m looking for an apprentice.” Ika looked at Sena's hand, still open and inviting, but quickly starting to drop. “Sacred Hearts use magic-infused weapons and spells to serve Aisha. Someone with your natural talent could be a great help to us.”
“And they wouldn’t care that I’m a half-blood?”
“If they do you’ll just have to prove them wrong.”
Before Sena could pull her hand completely back to her side Ika leaned forward and snatched it. For a moment the two simply looked at one another and Ika wondered momentarily if maybe she’d made a mistake. Was this the right choice? Would following Sena really help her? And yet, in that moment, she knew it was the only path for her.
If she really wanted to make something of herself, to be as useful as she could while maintaining who she was at her core, then Ika would need to find a unique path. All at once the road before her was bright again, and she could see where she needed to go.
“Alright then, let’s get started.” Sena grinned.

Prentice Growth Solo
[Now that Ika has officially declared her career path it's time to show her dedication in an open, visual display. By choosing to dread her hair she's cementing herself as part of the sisterhood, regardless of whether they're ready to have her or not. She's ready to take the next step in her life under Sena's tutelage.]
It was one thing to formally declare herself an Alkidike’s apprentice, but another entirely to have her hair dreaded.
Ika had purposely avoided the practice throughout her formative years. It wasn’t out of a distaste for the style so much as it was an attempt to keep some sense of individuality. To put it simply Ujiri kept his hair dreaded and Ika didn’t want to be like her twin.
Her ideas on what she wanted were so much simpler as a child. Back then they were simply a look; one that her alkidike mother had and her earthling mother didn’t. Now Ika knew it was so much more. Dreadlocks were a symbol of unity and strength for the Alkidike. It was something that tied them back to their mother goddess no matter how far away they might be. If a sister were to cut her dreads it would be seen as a great shame and a sign she’d turned her back on her people. She’d learned enough about it through her mother and older sister to have formed a strong opinion on dreadlocks. Ika never felt right wearing them without following the alkidike path, but now....now she was ready to try.
She’d met with Sena early in the morning, without her mother’s knowledge. Ujana was off doing goddess only knew what and Ariya was left to watch the younger two. Having her own time wasn’t hard to come by so having her hair dreaded in an effort to surprise Ariya wasn’t hard to orchestrate at all.
As strongly as she felt about the situation a part of Ika was still anxious. Every section that Sena divided up was another part of her life that was quickly going to change. Soon enough she would be showing her pride as a sister, and would be expected to prove herself daily. It hadn’t been enough to just say she was going to train to become a Sacred Heart; Ika needed to prove her dedication the only way she knew how. What would they say? When they saw her? Would her mothers be happy? Mad? And what about her Aunt? Her grandfather? They were bound to find out sooner or later, so now was as good a time as any.
The process itself took most of the day. Perhaps they would have gone further if Ika hadn’t needed so many breaks, but adjusting to the tightness took time. Sena encouraged her to take it bit by bit, not to push herself, and when time came to start again she did so swiftly. By the time it was all over and Ika saw herself in the river’s reflection she knew she’d done the right thing.
Her heart swelled just looking at them.
“They suit you.” Sena approached from behind and smiled at Ika through the water’s image.
“I think so too.” This was it; from now on she would officially do her best as a sister whether they were ready for her or not.
