Lorin is a small bundle of contradictions. Most of his actions walk a fine line guided by anxiety: excitement at the prospect of new friends but nervousness about making a good impression, a strong desire to help tempered with fear that he is not doing enough or pushing too much. Most of this is pushed to the wayside when he makes new acquaintances, his curiosity abundant and friendliness shining from every feature, and he will go out of his way to make sure the newcomer feels loved and welcomed. He is quite fond of physical contact, giving or receiving, and is always the first to reach for someone's hand or give a hug - to him, nothing is a more reassuring sign that someone cares. Despite how friendly he is, Lorin feels easily overwhelmed in large groups and prefers to shy away from the spotlight in such situations - he is moreso a natural observer. One-on-one allows him to give someone the attention he feels they deserve, full of love and affection, and he is very sensitive to the needs of others. He treasures his friends and family deeply and will go to great lengths to make sure that everyone is happy.
Lorin is slowly forming a somewhat unbalanced picture of what it means to be a good friend, and while he will happily overextend himself to make sure those around him are happy and taken care of, he is not very forthcoming about his own worries and emotional burdens. Lorin prefers not to address his own deepest desires directly, and only opens up to close company after a long history and ample persuasion. He wants to be considered a dependable, capable young man to his loved ones, ready to provide a shoulder or an available ear, as well as to spoil with gifts of plants or bad drawings. He is in a hurry to grow up, but sometimes childhood pulls him back and he is clinging onto those he cares about most, wiping his tears and burying his face in their arms. This creates an undercurrent of bitterness in him when he falls short of his own expectations, and feels a touch of envy at those who seem to have a better balance in their lives.
His sensitivity runs deep, and he finds himself easily moved by a number of things. He feels his emotions very strongly and try as he might, he is not very good at hiding them. Music is especially influential on him, and he soaks up whatever music he can and is an avid fan of listening to Aaron practice. A burgeoning talent in song is taking shape in him, although it has not come to head yet, but with how his family keeps music an active part of his life, it is only a matter of time. A love of nature is likewise supported by his loved ones, and he spends a lot of time helping Claire and Ivy in their gardens, as well as pouring over the nature guides so heavily relied upon by Claire's father. He has an explorer's nature and nothing makes him happier than few quiet hours in the woods. He is casually invested in video games and some nerdy media, a fire stoked by Cadi and Aaron both, along with a handful of his acquaintances.
Likes: Field guides, peaceful afternoons, exploring, nature of all sorts, slightly damp soil, frogs, bees, music, succulents, playing outside, drawing (lack of skill notwithstanding)
Dislikes: Very loud and sudden noises, angry shouting, sad moments in movies, heavy snow, not being taken seriously, a dead Nintendo 3DS battery
✦ Wings: Lorin's wings are living leaves - healthy, thick, and strong despite their coloration hinting at that of dry leaves. He timidly hovers at a height of just under four feet until he has time to embolden himself.
✦ Antennae: Lorin's antennae looks similar to that of a moth's fronds and feel nearly as soft; they are actually made of small leaves that grow a fine layer of fuzz on them, much as a licorice plant does. They can move in a limited range of motion and are especially sensitive to touch and temperature changes, sometimes twitching.
✦ Childlike Appearance: Lorin looks younger than most other Freis, comparable to human children of eight or nine years old, and with a shining curiosity that only enhances that perception.
✦ Willful Hair: Lorin's hair grows very quickly and is always in need of a cut much faster than other children. It also curls and frizzes in especially damp or humid weather if it is left to air dry.
✦ Clean Scent: Lorin gives off the scent of slightly damp leaves and fresh air, that holds a somewhat bitter note if he has fed off of bitter foods recently.
✦ Low-Grade Toxin Secretion (active): While honey is often considered a delicious treat, if nectar is culled from poisonous plants, the honey itself can be dangerous. Lorin can secrete a low-grade toxin when cornered and in utmost distress, through his blood, sweat, saliva, or tears. The potency is low, with effects varying from dizziness and fatigue to vomiting at the highest scale - just enough distraction for him to get away.
✦ Nature Affinity (passive/active hand-off): Animals and insects recognize the soul within Lorin and are naturally drawn to him. They will come to him without fear, call out to him, and perch on him should he be near as he gives off a vibe similar to any other great tree in the forest. His stronger affinity is with plants, however; a leshy's powers were so potent that local farmers made deals with them to encourage a successful harvest. Lorin can understand the thoughts and feelings of plants and trees, as well as "speak" to them. In doing so, he can do such things as encourage accelerated growth or pinpoint pests or illnesses. He can also monitor changes in the flora around him, including shifts in magic, and identify plants that may be magical.
✦ Vocal Memory (active): Leshiye are renowned for their vocal impersonation by harnessing the memories of those they wish to lead astray. Lorin is able to pick up on the voices of especially strong memories and mimic them after encountering them a handful of times. This makes it easy for him to pick up certain animal calls or the voices of those who figure strongly into another's memories. However if there are too many overpowering memories, he can become confused and unable to focus on one specific voice.
✦ Anti-Bacterial Properties (passive): Like the honey that serves as the basis for his Essence, Lorin is resistant to small colds and minor infections, and can bring small relief to others with those conditions through his natural pheromones, although he cannot cure anything.
✦ Bitter Tastes: Lorin's favorite food is anything bitter, and in sucking the bitterness out of it, the food in question will either become sweeter or bland. The bitterness of grapefruit is a favorite of his.
✦ Photosynthesis: Like many plants, Lorin can utilize the sun to help sustain energy levels. In warmer seasons, he enjoys stepping out into the sun to feel revitalized.
✦ Honey: Lorin likes to indulge in a spoonful of honey every now and again, and always in moderation as he receives quite a sugar rush from it - the resulting sugar crash is not pretty.
✦ Bitter Thoughts: Lorin can cull the bitterness from especially bitter fellows if he has direct physical contact with them. It provides somewhat of an unhappy taste to him if too much is taken in and moves like molasses through his system. He can lift a little of it for feeding without focusing directly and only touching any exposed bit of skin, but if he wants to take large amounts, he has to concentrate very closely and be touching the person's head.
✦ FRIENDLINESS - 30: Despite some initial shyness, Lorin warms very quickly to familiar faces and treasures every meeting. He loves contact and making others happy is very important to him - he wants nothing more than to see his loved ones safe, happy, and smiling. He goes out of his way to make sure that his companions are well cared for.
✦ HUMOUR - 27: Lorin emulates his father's love of a good laugh and always strives to bring a smile to his loved ones' faces. Being so young, many of his jokes miss the mark, but his own innocent amusement can likely coax the same out of others.
✦ CHARISMA - 26: While still young, Lorin is a fast learner and abides by the rules and boundaries set before him and places the comfort of others very highly. His curiosity and sweetness lend him an adorable charm.
✦ INTELLIGENCE - 25: Lorin is bursting with curiosity about the world around him and soaks up any new fact or bit of information he can get his hands on, be it from other people, books, or from the world around him. It might take him a few tries, but he is a firm believer in "if at first you don't succeed, try again."
✦ STRENGTH - 24: A surprising number for such a small body, Lorin's strength is activated when his "fight or flight" instinct kicks in - he is avoidant of conflict and might only accidentally harm in his struggle to get away.
✦ MAGIC - 24: Much of Lorin's magic is nature-based and fairly mundane, but as he grows in confidence, so will his abilities. What he does, he does well, and will shakily go about new magical endeavors with curiosity tempered with hesitance.
✦ ENDURANCE - 20: With his surprising strength, Lorin is not very practiced in maintaining his energy levels and because of such, he tends to burn out fast. He is strongest in warmer months and gentle sunlight where he can properly feed on the go, but it wanes as colder weather moves in.
✦ CREATIVITY - 19: Lorin is no stranger to make-believe, pretending being one of his favorite pastimes, but much of what his playtime fantasies encompass are based deeply, if not entirely, on the media he consumes. He is a very willing artist, but a poor one, but it does not bother him - he merely presses on, unperturbed.

Leshiye are terribly mischievous beings: they have horrible cries, and can imitate voices of people familiar to wanderers and lure them back to their caves, where the leshiye will tickle them to death; they also remove signs from their posts. Leshiye aren't evil: although they enjoy misguiding humans and kidnapping young women, they are also known to keep grazing cattle from wandering too far into the forests and getting lost. Sometimes farmers and shepherds will make pacts with then by handing him their crosses from around their necks and sharing communion with him after Christian church gatherings; these pacts are said to give them special powers as well as grant their livestock and crops protection. According to legend, if a person gets lost in the woods when a leshy crosses their path, they must turn their clothes inside out and wear shoes on the opposite feet in order to escape.
The leshy that Claire encountered shares draws some comparison to the old legends, but that is also subject to debate on if that was his true form and not one he had grown accustomed to taking.

Claire is a sympathetic, caring soul with a bit of a bleeding heart. She is always ready to extend a helping hand, an open ear, and dole out some motherly advice - a remnant trait of her younger, more impressionable days. Most everyone receives the benefit of a doubt, and although this has come back to bite her in the past, she has a hard time steeling herself against someone in need. Against those who are particularly unpleasant, she can offer up formidable defenses and uses her aptitude for intelligent conversation and wordplay to her advantage. While she usually can project the image of calm serenity, Claire is still climbing out of a years-long depression stemming from the loss of her father and two miscarriages, causing moments of deep sadness. In such cases, she usually holes herself off or becomes cagey and quiet if pressed, exacerbated by invasive thoughts. Thankfully, her family and loved ones have been very supportive, and the arrival of Lorin has done much to considerably ease the darkness of her thoughts.
At her best, Claire is a positive influence who prides herself on being grounded and approachable. She is intelligent and enjoys engaging in conversation of both the friendly bantering variety or intellectual debate, depending on the company and the topic. She has a deep love of nature, instilled in her from her parents and her own travel experiences, and she finds nothing more relaxing than spending an afternoon outside or planning how her garden should expand. She also loves children very dearly and has spoiled her niece and nephew as best as she can - something she is trying hard to avoid with Lorin but failing miserably, but thankfully the child would much rather receive stuffed animals over expensive child-friendly tablets. Born to a mother in the Peace Corps instilled a love of travel and seeing the world in young Claire. When she was old enough and money properly allowed, she joined her father and older brother on trips to visit her mother in the field, while books filled in the rest of the blanks of what the world had to offer. By the time her mother retired from her work, Claire was in high school and had taken an interest in a study abroad program to see the world for herself, and she spent her junior year in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was during the trip that she met a young man from Durem by the name of Aaron Holmes, and the two became fast friends in a foreign land. They kept in touch over the next couple years during their undergrad studies, and Claire eventually joined him at Durem University, where she majored in English and Aaron in Business Management, aiming to take the reins of his father's produce distribution company. Their affection for one another deepened over time, and after many successful hang out sessions, a few parties, many movies, and a few friendly kisses, they began officially dating in Claire's third year of college. During that time, in prepping her senior capstone project, she decided to pursue post-graduate training in law school and was welcomed into Durem University's school of law following her undergrad graduation.
She finished her paralegal studies with flying colors and found a job with a small law office by the name of Royce & Harris in downtown Durem. While the work was stressful, it brought in decent enough money to help her and Aaron rent a nice downtown apartment together while he trained under his father. They married in fall of 2011, the year Claire turned twenty-seven, after four years of being together. Their first year of marriage was markedly happy, although their schedules kept them pretty busy, but tragedy struck when her father passed unexpectedly the year after. The loss hit her especially hard and she grieved deeply, surfacing momentarily when she and Aaron decided to try and start a family together. It was a path that ended in heartbreak twice with miscarriage, and the second miscarriage was especially devastating. She was diagnosed with a septate uterus during a subsequent follow-up, and Claire fell into a years-long depression at the news and became withdrawn and distant from her husband, unwilling and scared to attempt another pregnancy. Aaron did his best to be supportive during their trials, but she could not forgive herself for denying them both a child, and as he was not used to dealing with such problems, he relented.
Both Claire and Aaron dove into their jobs, but it did little to distract her from the reality, and the stress and depression culminated into a series of mental breakdowns as the fall of 2013 approached. Ivy, during one of many private phone calls between mother and daughter, merely told her to "come home," and that was all it took. Aaron and Claire packed up their Durem apartment and bought a house in Gambino, just down the street from Ivy. Claire herself applied at a smaller office, where she was laid off in the fall of 2014, a short time after her acceptance into the Lab program. This was both a blessing and a curse, as it left her ready for anything but with little else to fill her time, and in the end it only served to heighten her anxiety about what was to come and what was expected of her to make her Raevan. She accompanied her mother to visit her old Peace Corps friend in Russia during the summer of 2015 and encountered a creature she had only heard tell of - a leshy. They forged an unexpected friendship that culminated in a tragedy that resulted in the loss of a good portion of Russian forest and the leshy, as well as putting Claire's life in clear danger. However the leshy relinquished his soul to Claire and with heavy heart, she and Ivy returned home.
In the spring of 2016, Lorin was born, and despite some bumps in the road, life has been fairly idyllic ever since.
Claire is tall and willowy, standing at 5'10", with an oval-shaped face sitting atop a long neck. Her complexion is pale with a tendency to burn in the sun rather than tan. Her dirty blonde hair is parted neatly down the middle, cropped at mid-neck in a loose bob, and her eyes are a light blue-gray, looking a little too large for her face. Clothing-wise, her style runs towards casual but classy - loose flowing tunic tops, leggings, flats, accessorized by jewelry. There is scarring on the back of her neck from the burns she suffered in Russia, during her soul capture.

33 YEARS OLD ✦ JULY 11TH, 1983; CANCER ✦ BUSINESS MANAGER OF HOLMES PRODUCE ✦ #CC3333 ✦ WARDROBE Aaron is Claire's husband and Lorin's "Papa". Overall a good-hearted guy, always with a smile on his face and a joke at the ready, Aaron's demeanor belies years of repression. The only child of overindulgent, wealthy parents who kept him under their thumbs, he grew up with little need to worry about the future. Shaped even further by a culture of unsavory, hateful friends in high school, Aaron's sharpened talent for music was hidden away for fear of ridicule. As a result, it can be said he does not take very many things seriously, but he is so hard-wired towards humor that it is used half with intent and half as a defense mechanism, which is a trait that sometimes pushes him two steps back for every step he takes forward. Things have been making a turnaround with Lorin's arrival and a renewed sense of trust and openness with Claire. He is very easy going and social, often finding his way into the spotlight at most parties. He inherited his "work hard, play hard" attitude from his father, although in slowly taking the reins of Holmes Produce, he has been taking on more of his father's work while his father skips off to play, much to his frustration. Shaking off years of repression and bad habits is hard work, but he is slowly but surely making progress. 65 YEARS OLD ✦ APRIL 30TH, 1951; TAURUS ✦ RETIRED; FORMERLY OF THE GAIAN PEACE CORPS ✦ #AAD44D ✦ WARDROBE Ivy is Claire's mother and Lorin's "Grandma". A former member of the Peace Corps, Ivy has traveled extensively in her lifetime and has been around people of all walks of life, but she never chooses to present herself as condescending for her experiences even if she is boisterous at times. She is a natural-born storyteller and hostess who enjoys sharing tales of her travels when the company is willing, or if she can use it to help impart a lesson. Grounded and considerate, Ivy may also get a little pushy at times if she notices someone hesitating much longer than they should, and is not adverse to giving them a friendly nudge down the right path. The loss of her husband Steven impacted her more deeply than she talks about, but she shouldered much of the family's grief and soldiered on so as not to leave anyone behind (especially her daughter) - she holds much of her fears and sadnesses close to her. She knows that her family relies on her and she does her best to be dependable, but time has eased her husband's passing and her playful personality comes more naturally nowadays. More often than not, she is arm-deep in her gardens while accompanied by her borzoi Misha (whom she received from a Peace Corps associate), watching classic movies on television, or out and about with her daughter and newest grandson. 22 YEARS OLD ✦ SEPTEMBER 28TH, 1994; LIBRA ✦ STUDENT; BARISTA ✦ #5D63B1 ✦ WARDROBE Cadi is Claire's sister-by-marriage, affectionately referred to as niece by both Claire and Aaron and as "sis" or "sissy" by Lorin. She does her best to project the image of a laid-back, friendly young woman, and while (for the most part) is it not totally untrue, everything she does is underscored by constant anxiety and worry. Clinical depression and anxiety made its mark on her early in life, coming to a head in hospitalization in her late teens, and it is something she is constantly at odds with; as such, she has a strained relationship with her parents and her sister, who are not quite sure how to handle it except by either fussing over it, becoming upset, or ignoring it entirely. Her casual demeanor is usually meant to keep people amiably at arm's length, and her acerbic, self-deprecating wit act as a defense mechanism against her crippling self-worth and body issues. For those who persist, however, she is befuddled, although pleasantly so, and one may count her as a reliable friend who makes a great secret keeper. She gets along better with children than adults, and her niece, nephew, and Lorin adore her for her playfulness with them as well as her variety of nerdy interests. She is currently attending Gambino University with an intent to finish out her major in Anthropology and a minor in English (with an emphasis on creative writing - a well-guarded secret hobby of hers).
Matthew Thomas Wainwright is Claire's older brother; he was born on January 17th, 1982. While generally a very amiable, charismatic person who has a way with his words, he has a tendency to push too many buttons in his enthusiasm and feels easily cornered when people are not swayed by him. He likes to debate, much like his sister, but gets fixated on his own views. During their youth, Claire and Matt had their share of spats but both maintain a friendly, if not particularly close, relationship. Currently, Matt works as a broker in Durem for the Gaia Exchange, and has done very well for himself and his family. He married his wife, a bank teller by the name of Anais Marcasani (born on August 7th, 1983), when they were in their early twenties. Anais is opinionated and friendly, backing her words with an easy wit and a loud laugh. She is a social butterfly who revels in hosting parties, gossiping, and getting involved easily in other people's business. She can be as pushy as her husband is (especially where her sister Cadi is concerned), and just as bullheaded, even if she means well. They have two children, Brendan (eight years old, born on February 2nd, 2009) and Dinah (five years old, born on May 21st, 2011). Both of them have a penchant for mischief.
Ruth and Clarence Holmes are Aaron's parents; Holmes Produce, based in Durem, is currently under Clarence's supervision, and he is grooming Aaron to be his successor. The business was started by Aaron's grandparents following the second World War, and has grown exponentially since. Ruth's parents escaped World War II by a hair's breadth and fled to the United States, later immigrating to Gaia, where they started a successful produce company. Ruth is very indulgent and protective of her son, having spoiled him greatly during his youth, and only wants the best for him (which, despite their marriage, she does not think Claire provides). Aaron inherits his "work hard, play hard" attitude from his father, who is a ruthless businessman and a fierce huntsman. Both of them are cold to Lorin and do not consider him an actual grandson, doing the barest merely to keep the company running smoothly and in Aaron's good graces.
Joanne and Hector Marcasani are Anais and Cadi's parents, who live in Durem. Both of them are retired, Joanne a former elementary school teacher and Hector an electrician. They had their hands full raising two daughters, and are now enjoying the benefits of an empty nest, although they keep tabs on their two daughters frequently (Anais, however, beats them to the punch, texting them as often as possible to gossip). Hector is fairly high-strung and tends to jump to anger but does his best to stay out of other people's business, balanced out by his caring-but-overly-concerned wife Joanne, who seems to do the opposite.
Arina Martin-Starikova is Ivy's former supervisor and close friend from her time in the Peace Corps. It was during a visit to her home in the Ulyanovsk Oblast in Russia that led Claire to meet the leshy. She is an active, friendly woman with a love of nature - one that grew during her time as a park ranger in Russia, and even moreso when she became with the local forest's guardian. Currently she is part of the recovery efforts to help the town and forest spring back in the wake of the devastating wildfire, often updating Ivy on the progress.

Claire and Aaron live in a small California Bungalow style house in Gambino, just a few houses down and across the street from Claire's mother, Ivy. The house is modestly sized, with two bedrooms, a kitchen and breakfast nook, and a back patio with a small fenced-in backyard. There is still much to be done in the gardens, but Claire has begun by buying up a huge array of potted flowers and plants that now cover the wood-plank patio. She has fenced in a small portion of the yard and tilled it, planting a few bulbs and hoping for the best come next spring, as well as making plans to put a stone path to another seating area on the other side of the lawn. While a few small trees line the fence, she is also in the market for an especially eye-catching tree as a centerpiece to the yard.The rooms are spacious and not overly cluttered, as they had only just moved in a few years prior and are figuring out how to decorate a house versus a one-bedroom apartment. Their furniture is new, in cherrywood (a favorite of Aaron's) and a few pictures and paintings line the walls. The kitchen is smaller than Claire would have liked, but she does find the general style and the addition of a breakfast nook very charming. A few soft recliners flank the couch in the living room, with a nicely-sized flatscreen hanging on the wall opposite. Lorin's room is a constantly evolving project, but the many stuffed animals on the bed, the silver forest accent wall, and the rainforest-patterned bedsheets have made it feel more like home. He is interested in some succulents for the windowsill.
