Who: Aaron and Claire (alpha lyrae), and Justin (The Semblance of Unity)
Where: A quiet bar and grill in downtown Gambino by the name of Raine's
          When: August 9th, 2014, around 9 PM
Weather: Just after dusk, and warm after a light summer rainstorm

------------------------------

"Been a while since we've been out together like this." Aaron grinned at his wife across the table as his hand came to rest on hers. Claire, in return, flipped her hand over and gave his hand a light squeeze, her own smile blooming on her lips. Compared to the other few patrons at Raine's at this time of night, they looked underdressed in jeans, t-shirts, and a tunic top, but neither of them had their minds on that at the moment. "I still can't believe this is happening. And Justin too!"

"I know," Claire gushed back, freeing her hand to take a sip from the water glass. The duo had opted to wait for Justin before they ordered drinks, which only felt right as this was a celebratory occasion. Celebratory, a little uncertain, sure, but definitely worthy of a glass of wine or beer between friends. As soon as she had finished telling him the news of their Raevan-to-be, as well as seeing a certain person's name recently added to the contact list, Aaron had his phone out, punching in a message to their friend, followed by a brief back and forth on the location and time. "I wonder how he's feeling about this.. I mean it IS a lot to take in.. you saw the paperwork and the clauses in the contract." Aaron's cheerful demeanor subdued itself just a touch and he nodded, taking a long draw from his water.

"Yeah. The soul capture part is..." He looked as though he were searching for a word to use, but he could not find one. "But at least it's something we can talk about. Nice to know someone going through the same thing, y'know?" His smile returned, and Claire nodded as her own resurfaced.

Justin was running just a little late. He didn't generally drive, and his taxi had gotten woefully stuck behind a moving truck. He tapped at his phone as a particularly burly man wrestled a dresser out of the back.
Text to Aaron
be there soon. taxi too slow.

Justin sighed and swiped over to Dead Space while waiting. Luckily, after a lot of creative swearing from his driver (Justin could likely take classes in cursing from him) that the truck moved. The evening after he'd gotten his bottle, his vial, he'd gotten a surprsing text from Aaron - they had been chosen to become guardians as well. It would be nice, he thought to have someone to do this sort of thing with. He was pretty sure Claire knew about 156% more about parenting than he. The taxi careened to a halt. Justin paid quickly, stuffing his phone in his pocket.

Straightening his shirt, he plodded into Raine's, giving Aaron's name to the hostess. Soon, he was in front of their table. "Hey." He smiled. They looked happy, excited and far less like the nervous wreck he generally was. Justin couldn't decide if that was heartening or made him even more anxious. "So... you guys excited?"

Aaron just noticed the phone buzzing as Justin made his appearance at the table; their service provided apparently didn't like this part of Gambino. "Hey there!" he greeted, raising a hand. "Welcome to the New Parents Club I guess?" Claire's smile waned just the slightest as she picked up on a bit of Justin's anxiety, even if her husband was a little oblivious to it. At his next question, some of Aaron's grin faded as well and he and Claire looked at each other.

"Well," she said, weighing her thoughts, "not without a bit of nervousness on our side as well. I mean.. it's essentially like parenting, and no matter how ready I think I am you're not always 'ready,' you know what I mean?" Her smile returned a bit and she shrugged. "But it's always good to have company. At least we can give a shout at one another since we'll be going through the same thing, right?"

"That's how I'm trying to see it, too," Aaron added, leaning back in his chair, arms crossed, before his gaze wandered over to the bar. "Anyway, we wanted to wait until you got here to order drinks, you have a preference?"

Justin smoothed his hair, a nervous motion, and slid into a seat at their table. If he were honest, seeing their earger faces made him feel just a little more at ease. He wished he could be more collected - like them. "I mean, it's not that I'm not excited. I'm just really glad you guys got picked at the same time as me. Oh," he looked at Aaron. "If they have a Dogfish Punkin, I'd like that. If not, just whatever you're having." He cracked his knuckles before placing both hands on top of the table. Then rearranging them. And rearranging them again.

"Anyway, I just wanted to say I can't think of anyone else who'd deserve getting a kid than you guys. You both seem solid - the good parents type. I might end up having to ask your guidance a lot." And then Justin smiled, dimples flashing in his cheeks. "So, congratulations! Have you had in luck in finding your 'soul'?"

"Dogfish Punkin, got it." Aaron nodded with a grin. "I think I'll get one too, that sounds pretty good." He turned to his wife. "Claire?"

"A glass of Zinfandel, please," she replied, and he nodded once more before vacating his seat and heading over to the bar. There was not a long line at the bar but all the same her husband meandered, taking the time to scan all the alcohol on the back display carefully. It seems he was more perceptive than she originally thought, Claire observed. 'Giving the two on-paper guardians some time to talk, I suppose.' She returned her gaze to Justin at the table and noticed how anxiously he was moving his hands about, and her smile relaxed into a more sympathetic one, and she mulled over how to respond to his questions momentarily.

"Thank you, although truthfully.. it's pretty scary, y'know?" Her eyes focused on her hands, folded together on the table, and for a moment her voice hitched as she continued. "I mean we've.. tried.. before, but it wasn't in the cards, I suppose." Now her own hands became somewhat restless, and she moved them to her lap. "But you never know until you try, right? I don't know what we can offer as far as advice but I know we can at least give some mutual support. We're all in this together." Her smile brightened again and she cast a glance over at Aaron (who was rather unconvincingly trying to seem the indecisive customer at the bar). "It'd be lovely if they could become friends once they're born, don't you think?" She exhaled a small sigh and imagined two children playing together, although she had to stop that image abruptly - Raevans likely would not look child-like upon birth, Zeke had explained as much. Still, the thought that their Raevan would have a friend so early was comforting.

What was not comforting was the business about soul collection. Claire's smile waned again.

"Honestly, the soul collection is what most troubles me about this." She leaned back in her seat. "I'm not sure what I feel about it. I know there are rocks and plants, and I think I could feel.. okay.. with that. But still.." She let the words hang for a moment, before volleying the question back to him. "What about you? Any ideas?"

Justin smiled at Aaron's obvious ploy to leave them alone for a bit. "It is scary, but I just have to, I don't know, convince myself that I'm prepared, you know?" He twiddled his thumbs for a second. "It would be nice if they could be friends - I'm not entirely sure how children normally act, my brother and sister were... interesting, to say the least." He pursed his lips in thought and chewed the bottom one. Soul capture worried him, too. It seemed... cruel somehow. He could take from one being and give it to a raevan. It wasn't like Justin was some Robin Hood of souls. What right did he have?

"I'm worried too, to be honest. I... don't feel right when I think about using up something's life, even if it's to create another. I'm also kind of afraid it'll try to take my pet snake or something...." He laughed a little, awkwardly enough to show that this was definitely a real concern of his. "Why can't I use... I dunno the heart of the cards as a soul? But yeah, I guess a rock would be ok." Justin tapped his fingers along the edge of the table in thought.

"Are you just... gonna toss the bottle at rocks and hope something sticks?"

"I suppose so, there aren't really many other options. I think I would have seriously reconsidered if Zeke hadn't pointed out the limiter cloth." Claire rested her chin in her palm and leaned on the table. "I was really worried about something happening with my mother's dog, since she brings him over quite often.. I think if it weren't for that, it'd be a very real concern. So I feel you on that." She paused for a moment, suddenly pensive now that he had raised the question. Despite the limiter and other parameters about soul capture, it still left a bitter taste in her mouth. The comment about the heart of the cards soared over her head but she nodded nonetheless.

"But.. it does feel wrong. Like who are we to decide whether something should die or live?" She glanced over at Aaron, who was striking up an animated conversation with the bartender. "I think I could be okay if I found a green stone of some kind and hope that it works, I've also thought about accompanying Aaron's father on hunting trips, but green animals are rather hard to come by." She smiled wryly. "It's good to know I'm not the only one feeling that way about things. Aaron wasn't too jazzed about that news but he took it better than I did, but he grew up around his dad and his hunter buddies." She sighed as she remembered the numerous game racks that lined Mr. Holmes' study, hating the stare of the glass eyes in the deer heads. Instead, she leaned back in her seat and turned her attention back to Justin.

"How about you? Any ideas?"

"Maaayybe... it'll be a plant?" he said, rather hopefully, echoing Claire's earlier sentiment. "Yeah, I don't think I'd feel too bad if it were a plant. A hunting trip would work, since it would die anyway, but... green." He chewed on his lips thoughtfully. "Oh, uh, did I tell you mine was kinda green-blue, too?" He pulled his phone out of his pocket and swiped and tapped a few times before sliding it over. On the screen was a picture of both bottle and essence, just chillin' on his dining room table. That was where they currently set up shop until he could figure out where else to put them. If he kept them in his room... Well, Monty wasn't green, but he didn't feel like taking chances.

"Sorry - I'm... a little all over the place. I don't think I even asked what your essence was?"

"You didn't." Claire perked a little at the news. "Is it weird that that makes me feel a little bit better?" She laughed somewhat self-consciously at the news, rubbing her forearm. "What I mean is that maybe we can bounce more ideas off of each other again, maybe, since we've got somewhat the same limitations on what color soul and all." She paused curiously as he slid his phone over to her, and her eyes widened as she pulled the phone closer, zooming in on the photo displayed there. It was certainly a very attractive bottle color, and the essence vial was equally attractive - as though a tiny, oddly radiant black hole were captured within.

"Make some room for the booze, guys!" Aaron was once again at the table side, arms laden with the libations, and he grinned as he doled them out. "I miss anything?" Sliding back into his chair, he leaned towards Claire and the unknown phone in her hands.

"Justin's bottle and essence," she offered with a smile, directing the screen towards him.

"No kidding," he exclaimed, reclining back once the phone came to rest on the table top again, but still in Claire's fingers. "Didja show him ours?"

"Well, not yet --"

"No sweat, I got it." His hand dove into his pocket and immediately the smart phone surfaced. "Glad I'm not the only one who decided to take a picture... there." He slid his phone over to the man across from them; whereas Justin's was on the table nicely displayed, Aaron's photo merely showed the bottle and essence in the open case.

"The essence the Lab gave me was Bitter Honey... I'm really curious about yours though." Claire tilted her head at the image on Justin's phone, then handed it back to him. "It looks really eye-catching with that glow."

"Maybe we'll end up with some kinda twin-souls or something." He laughed a little and obligingly scooted his elbows off the table when Aaron, and the booze, returned. He supposed another person could have seen it as an odd competition - who could get the suitable soul first. But there were many, many greenish things in the world and Justin's urge to compete was currently thoroughly overridden by his general nervousness.

"I figure," he said, tilting Aaron's phone, "-that it's kind of like a baby picture in a way. Gotta keep records and scrapbooks or something. Yours has got a lovely golden color to it - it's hard to think it might be anything but a really delicious regular honey. At least you won't be feeling the urge to upend it into some tea." He set the phone back down on the table, sliding it a little back towards Aaron. It clicked against a glass.

With a thoughtful hum, he took his own phone back, looking at the picture once more before slipping it into his pocket. It really was a beautiful essence - like a moon surrounded by a dark night sky. "It's called, uh, independent bio-luminescence. Which is a mouthful. Mean it glows a lot. Sometimes, I think other things get dim around it, but its probably just my imagination." He took a drink, letting the slight bubbles p***k across his tongue. "It might be silly, but I already have a name. Aadhira. Because it kinda looks like a moon and stuff... and Aadhira means moon. Have you guys thought about it?"

"It kinda does, doesn't it?" Aaron grinned and reached over to grab his phone, locking the screen and shoving it back into his pocket. "Maybe we should invest in a new photo album or something." He redirected his smile over to Claire, who pinkened at the cheeks and nodded. "Get some pictures of the bottle and essence out of the case." He mused over the thought, nursing his own bottle of Dogfish in his hands. Claire, meanwhile, reached for her glass of wine gratefully, swirling the contents around absently.

"And thank you, by the way." Claire's response to Justin's comments on her essence was a touch belated, followed by the laugh at the quip about using the essence in her tea. "Yeah I.. can't imagine that would taste very good, unfortunate that somebody else had to find that out though." Fortunate, and then again not fortunate, she thought, because otherwise they would not be together celebrating. The couple listened intently to Justin's description of his essence, Claire leaning forward to rest her chin in her palm and rest the elbow on the table.

"I dunno, man, could be me just saying so but it might be." Aaron scratched his head with a laugh. "Maybe because I didn't go to the Lab from day one, I might not be totally in the know here but who knows? It probably does steal some of your ambient light. But hey, for all the light it's stealing away, maybe it'll light up a Christmas tree once they're born, save your power bill a bit probably." He took a long draw from the bottle when he'd finished, lips upturned in amusement at the corners. Claire shook her head at her husband's cornyness and instead focused back on the talk of names. Again her cheeks pinkened, this time from slight embarrassment on her part - she had plenty of names she liked, but they all seemed connected to past events and wants rather than what was at hand.

"It's not silly at all, and you're yards ahead of us ahead there." Claire thought there little harm in admitting it. "I think that's a lovely name. We just haven't had time to think of anything yet with all of.. everything going on, but when we do, we'll definitely let you know." She stared into her wine glass and finally took a sip, and Aaron - quiet though he had been for the past several minutes - piped up.

"We should toast, I think. Three haphazard Raevan parents, sounds like a good occasion for it." He held his bottle up cheerfully. "What do you say?"

"Oooph, that's a little creepy - the light-stealing. " he nodded, failing to conceal his amused smile. "-maybe he will be a good nightlight, after all. Or he will just suck up everything still and rack up my bill astronomically. And maybe your raevan will just eat all the sugar in the house." For all his anxieties (and that was a new one), Justin was excited. He was excited to be a part of a community, even if he felt like he didn't quite fit in, and excited to be having, well, a child, sort of. Was he cut out for this? Aaron's voice drew him out of his nervous reverie.

"I'd really like to met your raevan when they arrive." He raised his bottle, too, and looked at Claire. "A toast to... to raevans and muddling through things and -" He shrugged and waited for someone else to say something. Justin was not exactly a wordsmith.

"Let's hope for both our sakes that that's not what happens." Claire laughed into her wine glass and took another sip. "I don't think either of our budgets could afford that." She also remembered vaguely from her conversation with Zeke that Raevans could not eat anything remotely man-made so should honey be the preferred food, they would have to go the organic route. While she was all for supporting the local beekeepers and farms, she was also in the dark about how much a Raevan would cost her somewhere down the road. The thought alone was rather scary and was sharply putting into perspective what she might have to look forward to.

"Let's keep our fingers crossed for the 'nightlight' option in your case, dude," Aaron added, casting a side glance over at Claire and nudging her slightly with his leg. "But we're all newbies here, I'm sure we'll get through it somehow, but yeah that's right -- toast -- let's see.." He paused as Justin started the toast off and nodded solemnly and turned to Claire, whose mouth opened when their companion had finished speaking, and she, too raised her glass.

"To not knowing what we're doing, but realizing that's okay.. oh! And to our Raevans being friends someday." Her face softened with another smile as she looked at Justin, acknowledging his earlier statement. "I would love that a lot."

"To forgiving energy and food bills," Aaron said with a grin, "and more meet-ups, even if it's just us adults." Claire opened her mouth one more time, and then paused, closing it slowly as she thought more. "Got another one?"

"Yeah, I think so, but it's likely going to sound super corny," she admitted, and Aaron shrugged.

"Hey, corny's good, at least tonight it is; go for it." Stimulated by the answer from her husband, she nodded, and raised her glass fully to graze against Justin and Aaron's bottles.

"Here's to the future," she said, and clinked it decidedly against the bottle lips with a peal of laughter.
