Who:: Lorin, Dair, Claire, Nell Where: Nell's apartment, Gambino When: Early afternoon Weather: One of the last nice days of summer, still sunny and pleasantly warm. There were benefits to having someone who could float, Nell was finding out. The windows in the living room, while giving an amazing view of the beach and letting in a wonderful amount of light, were a pain to clean. But now she didn't have to mess with ladders or long poles since Dair didn't seem to mind terribly much at being sent up near the ceiling to clean those hard to reach bits of glass. But the cleaning was coming to an end, the apartment was as close to spotless as it could get while still being comfortable, and the last remnants of the cleanup were being cleared away. Nell was a bit ashamed that it took her so long to extend an invitation to Claire, especially after hearing that her own Raevan had come home months before, but she at least figured it was better late than never. It only dawned on her that morning that with everything else going on, she had forgotten to mention Dair at all. Well. Nothing like a surprise, she guessed. So it was probably for the best that when she heard a knock on the door that he was still in the back, putting up the broom and dustpan. "Coming!" she called, making a quick trip into the kitchen to pull a pitcher of lemonade out of the fridge on the way to the door.

Nell's call had been a very pleasant surprise. Claire had reflected curiosly on the woman she had met at the New Year's Eve party and fought with (and against) in the Great Snowball War. With the arrival of Lorin, time seemed to quickly slip away, and before she knew it, fall had arrived. Lorin had been in their home for half a year, a fact she reflected on to Nell during her phone call. It was strange, but a good strange.
The trip to Nell's apartment had not taken very long and Lorin wiggled excitedly in his seat. He has asked a million questions on the short drive ("Where did you meet her, Mama?", "Is she real nice?", "When's her Raevan coming?"), all of which she had deflected with a smile as she laughingly suggested, "Why don't you ask her when we get there?", to which he merely puffed out his cheeks. She was thankful that he was getting used to meeting new faces and was still so enthusiastic, although as they pulled up out front, some of his wiggling waned and he looked up at the apartment building with a note of apprehension. Her heart went out to him.
"C'mon, baby boy, why don't you give her the plant we gave her?" The suggestion seemed to chase away some of his nerves and he scooped up the plant in his small hands. It was an air plant that had budded off from its mother, whom she had received at the Anniversary Tea the previous summer, the planter dressed up with a yellow ribbon. As they approached the door and Claire knocked, Lorin's fingers flexed on the planter nervously, gripping it more protectively when Nell called through the door in answer. She placed a hand on his shoulder to reassure him, but soon enough the door opened to a familiar face, pitcher of lemonade in hand and sporting a very different hair style than she had seen close to a year ago.
"Hi Nell, good to see you!" Claire greeted, smile wide. "I love your hair!" Lorin shuffled at Claire's side, arms tight around the pot. "Thank you for inviting us." Her hand still rested on Lorin's shoulder and she gave him a soft nudge. "Lorin honey, this is Nell. She's another guardian with the Lab." Between the leaves of the air plant, Lorin's amber eyes watched Nell with curiosity.
"Hi," he said, nervous at first, but his gaze dropped to the planter in his arms and he held it up. A smile lit his face knowing he had something to offer. "We brought 'cha a plant!"

"Hey, Claire! How're you?" A hands passed over her head self-consciously with a grin before she noticed the little one hovering behind Claire. She couldn't quite help the quiet "oh!" that slipped out when he spoke or the excited grin that spread across her face.
"Hey, there! You did? Well, " she knelt down and gently scooped the planter out of his hands, holding it up to her face to get a good look at it. "Isn't that nice of you! I think I have a perfect place for this lil' guy! Why don't y'all come on in, I actually have a surprise for you too." She stepped to the side to let them both in, nudging the door closed with an elbow before bustling in after them.
"Make yourselves at home! Can I get you anything to drink? There's, " she held up the pitcher of lemonade with a smash laugh, "this or I have some different juice or water...Could you grab the bag out of my in your way back?" This last bit was directed over her shoulder towards the back of the apartment as she set the plant on a table by a window, turning it so it was Just So.
And then Dair drifted around the corner, holding up the gift bag as if silently asking if it was the right one. His hair had been scraped back into a messy ponytail and he had opted for an oversized sweater instead of what he had been born in, and he speed abruptly when he noticed the new people that were there.
"Why don't you come and give it to Lorin, " she suggested gently, tilting her head in the direction of the younger-looking Frei.

Lorin's smile bloomed into a toothier one, overjoyed by the happy reception of his gift, and he and Claire both shuffled inside behind Nell at her invitation. "It's from Mama's air plant she got last summer, it'll get real big soon! This one's just a baby," he added knowledgably, with a hint of pride. He had been especially attentive of it since she had tranferred part of the budding plant into its own planter.
"That sounds good, thank you," Claire answered, her eyes dropping to the pitcher in Nell's hand with a laugh. "I think lemonade sounds perfect. Do you have any grapefruit juice?" She turned to look down at Lorin to confirm but she paused when Dair floated in. "Nell," she said, somewhat breathless, "you didn't tell me your Raevan had arrived! Congratulations!" Her smile grew.
Lorin's attention was arrested by the arrival of the other Raevan. His eyes took in the whole of him as he floated further into view - the loose ponytail, the comfy-looking sweater, the branch-like wings and horns, and his dark eyes that looked almost sightless. The smaller Frei's hands, relieved of the planter, laced together in front of his torso - how remarkably different this Raevan was from those he had met. But the presence of the branches made him feel as though they were not so different from each other.
"Hello," he ventured, voice as timid as it was when he first greeted Nell, but he hovered a touch higher to get a better look at Dair. "What's your name?" His hands were still clasped together nervously at this new introduction - this had been unprecedented! Usually he had been told ahead of time who he was going to meet, but this was quite a change of pace for him.
"Honey, it looks like he's got a gift for you," Claire prompted with a hand on the shoulder. "What do you say?" Lorin started at her sudden touch and he finally noticed the gift bag - his eyes had been too busy before taking in Dair.
"Thank you!" The smile re-emerged, bright and shining. An unexpected friend who had kindly gotten him a gift? Today was turning out to be quite interesting.

"I'm sure it'll be the prettiest plant around, then! I'll make sure to keep you up to date about it, okay?" Her smile turned rather sheepish at Claire's comment. "Sorry, I just realized this morning that I hadn't, things have been a hectic the past few days," She watched Dair's approach for a few seconds before scooting over to the kitchen, grabbing a few glasses before digging around in the fridge to see if she had any grapefruit juice.
Dair, meanwhile, sunk a bit lower, nodding a greeting to Claire before returning his attention to Lorin. He certainly looked much younger than him, though the leaf-like wings and antennae immediately put the thought of 'plant' into his mind. Was he one of the other plant Raevans that Ethiriel had mentioned? The initial impression of familiarity let him relax a bit though, some of the tension and nervousness leaving his posture.
"Hello," he said, his voice a quiet rasp that still made Nell wince a bit whenever she heard it. "My name is Dair." He floated a touch closer, seeming to forget the bag in his hands until Claire spoke. With a quick look over at Nell (who nodded encouragingly) he held out the bag to Lorin, unable to keep himself from smiling in return at Lorin.
(He's so cute!!! Nell mouthed at Claire from the kitchen, pointing to Lorin with a cup-filled hand.)

"Water's fine," Claire replied quietly to Nell, her eyes trained on Dair as he nodded in greeting. She dipped her head in reply, giving a sheepish wave and she glanced down to Lorin. She would introduce herself once the moment presented itself. Lorin beamed as Dair lowered to meet him, and he took in the lightning-like markings on his chest with fascination.
"Dair?" he repeated, antennae perking. "My name's Lorin." His smile became a touch shy. "Nice to meet 'cha." He swayed on the spot, glancing up at his mama momentarily when Dair presented the bag with a smile of his own. Lorin's expression lost its shyness and he accepted the bag, crinkling under his arms, and he set the bag down to rifle through it. Claire grinned at Nell as they shared their lip synched correspondence, one hand to her cheek as she mouthed 'thank you' in reply. Tissue paper was pushed to the side carefully, and his curious eyes widened in delight as he pulled out the prize. A giant stuffed bee nearly as big as he was was clutched quickly to his chest with a cry of joy.
"This is for me?" he gasped, gaze shooting between Dair and Nell in the kitchen. The bee was so big and soft, and he held it tight to his chest, floating higher with a quick joyful spin. "Thank you!"
"I think the gift is a hit," Claire laughed to Nell.
"I'm gonna put her with my froggies," he said cheerfully, holding it out to appraise it again before bringing the stuffed animal back in for another hug. He knew the frogs would welcome the newcomer with no problem, and he patted the bee's head fondly, and then looked up in some alarm at Dair. "I wanna get something for you too!!" he insisted, tiny face set in determination, only for it wane a second later into uncertainty as he looked down at the soft bee in his arms. "But I don't got any money so it'll be later."
"I'm sure you will think of something," Claire suggested with a smile. Lorin kept looking at the bee thoughtfully, and he hovered closer to the oak Frei, finally meeting his eyes.
"What kinda things d'you like?" he asked earnestly. He was determined to find out and get Dair the best present ever for giving him the Best Present Ever; he was also burning with curiosity to get to know his nice new friend.

"That's good," her voice floated out of the kitchen with a laugh of her own. "Though honestly I wouldn't have minded keeping it for myself, it's so squishy." Seeing his happy pirouette killed any hesitation she had about letting it go, though. He looked so happy, and she could always end up buying herselfone later. Or a couple more. She eventually scooted her way back into the living room, carefully juggling a few cups in her hands. A glass of water was handed to Claire, a smaller juice glass set on the table for Lorin for whenever he wanted it, and she held onto a glass of lemonade for herself.
"It's nice to meet you too, Lorin," he watched with a bit of hesitation as he unwrapped his gift, worried if he would like it. True, he hadn't been the one to pick it out, but it still would be awkward if he didn't like it. Lorin's enthusiastic 'thank you' banished any worries he had, a smile of his own replacing the rather worried look he had just a moment ago.
That smile faded a bit when th tables were turned on him, though. What did he like? His nose scrunched up as he thought, his fingers absently picking at the cuffs of his sweater. "I like...the rain and forests and...sweaters? I think..." He hadn't been around for long enough to have gotten more than that figured out, but it was a good start for likes, he thought.
"How...how many frogs do you have?"

"Oh here, let me help you --" Claire reached forward instinctively when Nell reappeared, balancing the glasses in her hands, to relieve her of the water. "Thank you." She smiled thankfully. "For all of this. I think you guys have made quite the impression already." Her voice lowered as she delivered the last bit, but the words read every bit of warmth she felt watching Lorin and Dair's first tentative exchange. The more pronounced smile from Dair drew Lorin's own out more fully.
"I only got two froggies," he said, swaying on the spot with his bee, delighted at the gentle flopping of its wings as he moved it, but he would not be deterred from his mission - finding out what his new friend liked. "All those things are nice," he agreed warmly, looking down at the bee in his arms as though conferring with her to help figure out what present to get. Eyebrows scrunched, he considered his options - Lorin had no idea where Dair would fit a forest in their house, and rain would make the floor all wet, if he could figure out how to get it in a gift box. At last, he came to a decision, after careful deliberation.
"Mama, we gotta get Dair a sweater," Lorin said, eyes wide and tone full of finality. "I dunno what'll be on it but we gotta do it." Claire chuckled as she took a seat, glass between her hands.
"Well you still don't know what you like quite yet, other than bees and frogs, right?" She offered, her smile kind. She leaned forward to pluck the gift bag out of the way and tuck it near the table. "It takes time to figure those out, honey." Lorin considered her words thoughtfully, watching Dair with fascination. That meant, appearances aside, Dair was young like he was, and the additional connection endeared him even more.
"Oh yeah," he hummed, pausing for a beat before looking up at Dair. "We can wait until you know whatcha like, then we'll get you a sweater." He nodded, pleased with his plan.

"Oh, don't mention it! Wish I could have gotten around to inviting you over sooner, but..." she trailed off a bit as she glanced over at the two raevans, unable to quite keep the smile off of her face. "Glad it happened when it did. I haven't had the chance to really take him out to meet people yet, so it's good he's got a chance to make a new friend."
Dair, meanwhile, listened patiently as Lorin thought, his head turning slightly to look back and forth between him and Claire as they spoke in turn. There was a brief moment of thought once Lorin had come to a decision before he gravely inclined his head in acknowledgment of his choice. "I will look forward to it, then." He glanced over at Nell, a bit unsure of what to do after pleasantries were exchanged, but all he got was a wink and thumbs up.
Well.
"We went to the forest the other day and I found some interesting things, did you want to see them?" His voice was a bit unsure, this was entirely new territory he was venturing into after all, and it didn't really involve bees or frogs so it might not go over so well with his new acquaintance.

"Sometimes it's easier to do it in familiar territory, first meetings can be a little nerve wracking." Claire kept her volume low so as not to disturb the two Freis, grinning at Nell. "Lorin met his first friend at my niece's house but he always gets a bit of stage fright when we go out to a meet-and-greet." Although for how well things were going, it didn't seem like they would need much help, once they got rolling a bit more. Lorin, meanwhile, nodded enthusiastically at Dair's words.
"Okay," he answered, smile growing. He continued to puzzle over what kind of sweater he could get for his new friend someday, tilting his head at the giant bee, when Dair broached the next discussion topic. His eyes went wide as he looked up at the oak Frei.
"You got forest things?" he asked, arms tightening around the bee in his excitement. "Can I see 'em?" His eyes also ventured back towards the adults, but Claire merely smiled. He swayed with the bee in his grasp, looking down at it carefully, and then he floated over to his mother and decisively held it out. "Here, Mama, can you hold my bee so I can see forest things?" A surprised laugh rolled out of Claire's mouth and she took the bee with both hands, setting it in her lap.
"She's safe with me," she assured him. Satisfied, he fluttered back to Dair with arms flapping against his sides, showing he was ready.

"He seems to be doing alright now, though!" Which was a bit of a worry she had had about Dair as well. He was so quiet and held back, such a marked difference from any of the children (or teenagers, for that matter) that she had grown up with and around, that she wasn't sure how he would act around others. But although there was some awkwardness, they seemed to be getting along well enough.
Dair watched Lorin carefully, not quite sure how this suggestion would go over, and was quite surprised at the rather enthusiastic response he received. A cautious grin slowly grew on his face, and he looked over to Nell when Lorin went to hand off his bee, silently asking for permission to show Lorin around. With a laugh, Nell waved them both off, giving Claire a rather surprised and pleased look. Well! Now she was glad she let him keep some of the stuff he picked up on their latest trip out to the forest!
"They're up here," he said, pointing up to the loft space above the kitchen as he began to float up to his room. There wasn't much in it aside from the basics yet, a bed, a bookshelf, a small table and lamp, but lined neatly along one of the shelves was a variety of things. A large pinecone, a small pile of acorns, a few interesting pebbles, a large piece of a shelf fungus with a couple of cicada husks perched on top. Essentially anything that crossed his path that he thought was interesting that he managed to stuff into his pockets (without mentioning to Nell until they got home, of course).

"Thank goodness for common ground, right?" As the two Raevans moved towards the loft, Claire squeezed the bee in her arms before she placed it back into the gift bag. "But anyway.." She turned her eyes back on Nell, her smile wide. "When did Dair arrive? How has he been settling in?" With a laugh, she also tacked on a little more seriously, "How have you been settling in?" It had occured to Claire, especially while they were making their plans, that she and Nell had not had much opportunity to really talk; being a guardian could be kind of disorienting, after all. While their Raevans were visiting, it seemed like as good a time as any to get to know one another.
Lorin quelled for but a moment when they ascended towards the loft, nervous as he was of flying too high. But with tiny face set in determination (and his friend wanting to show him neat things), he tagged along after Dair, close enough to reach out and touch his shirt, nervous as he was. However once they emerged into the loft space, Lorin's eyes went wide. Sparse at it was, he marvelled at what was already present. He spun slowly to get a better view, mouth slightly ajar. "Your room is coooool," he said in awe. If there were places like this up high, then he figured he should brave heights more often! In his scoping of the room, he finally spotted Dair's collection of forest goods. "Ah!" With a flap of the wings he was off towards them, leaning in to inspect each item in turn. Small hands rose, eager to feel the items for himself. He found himself drawn to the fungus and cicada husks the most, as he had never seen anything quite like them before. "Can I touch 'em?" he asked excitedly; young as he was, he knew better than to touch other people's things without permission.

"Oh god, he's been doing a lot better than I thought? I was expecting it to be a lot more..." she trailed off with a thoughtful hum, her gaze following the raevans as they floated off. "Difficult. I had some trouble with his essence, I so I guess I was expecting more of the same, but he's really easy-going about most things and almost takes care of himself." There was a bit of a pause as she took a sip of lemonade before she grinned. "I always think I'm doing something wrong because he's so quiet, all the kids I've been around have been really loud, so this is a bit out of my comfort zone." She looked back to Lorin and Dair once more, a small, fond smile spreading across her face.
"I think it'll work out though. How about you? Lorin seems like he's a dream to take care of."
It was clear that he was a bit nervous about having someone new poke around is room, his fingers absently picking at the hem of his sweater and his shoulders rising up towards his ears as he watched Lorin look around. But his shoulders relaxed and his fingers stilled at his eager question. He nodded, floating a bit closer towards the bookshelf. "Yeah! I want to go back, there was a lot of things, but they wouldn't all fit in my pockets." Maybe he needed bigger pockets. Or more pockets... "I can ask Nell if you could come along next time if you wanted?"

Claire's fingers curled around her glass as she listened to Nell. It occurred to her how lucky she might have been, in regards to Lorin - it seems her and Nell both were lucky with their charges. Were there other Raevan guardians who had had a bumpier road? That was very likely true. Lorenzo, from what she had gathered in the last time they had spoken, certainly sounded like he and Vesna had a few rough patches, although they seemed to be working together to make it as smooth as possible. She supposed that was what mattered most, being willing to meet half-way. The concerns that Nell had were very real for any parent, and Claire hummed thoughtfully when the question was turned back on her.
"Kids are funny like that," she replied with a smile. "They're their own little people and it's kind of surprising at times. My niece and nephew are pretty different from Lorin.. I really hope they don't rub off on him." She laughed, although she was half-serious (her brother was really bad about spoiling his children). "But Lorin has been wonderful so far. He's mostly been following me around, sticking to me like glue. Which is really nice, but.." She paused. "Makes it kinda hard for me to let him have time away from me, y'know? I'm an overprotective mom in the making." She laughed again, a bit self-mocking. "I think spending time with just friends will be good." As she spoke, her gaze flicked up to the loft where she could hear the Raevans talking quietly. "I think the two of them are off to a good start."
Lorin's smile appeared when he got the okay, only to brighten when Dair visibly relaxed at the question. "Thanks!" His eager hands reached for the acorns first, enticed by the dull sheen of their surface. He rolled it around in his palm, feeling the different textures with his other hand. He listened to Dair speak, turning his head to him as he continued to roll the acorn around in his hand. With just one look at the shelf fungus and the array of other items he had brought, Lorin was very impressed. "But you got lotsa stuff. You must have lotsa pockets." The acorn was replaced on the shelf and he went for the pinecone next when Dair continued, and he gasped at the invite. He had not been to the woods yet, and to be able to go with friends?
"I can really come?" he asked at the offer, eyes bright as he clutched the pinecone to his chest. "Thank you!" His expression softened when allowed to think for a moment, and then he glanced down at the pinecone in his hands, frowning critically. "We're gonna need lots more pockets, though," he added with a nod. "Or a big bag. Or lotsa bags." Lorin had no idea what they could find in the woods, but if this was a nice sampling, he did not want to be unprepared!

While she was slowly becoming more comfortable and assured in the decisions she was making (largely in part to the numerous panicy texts sent to her father), there was still a lot of shaky ground that she was making her way across. She often found herself wishing for an instruction manual, or at least a support group. Though perhaps these meetings with other guardians was close enough.
"Maybe it'll go the other way and he'll rub off on them! Though I don't think he'll be starved for choices for playdates," she said with an amused huff. "I don't know if I just didn't notice before, but raevans seem to be popping out of the woodwork everywhere lately. It'd be nice if there was another party happening soon so he would just meet them all at once, might be a bit overwhelming but it'd sure be convenient." She grimaced, her expression akin to that of a kid who was caught with their hand in a cookie jar.
[color-darkolivegreen]"I do," he said gravely. Pockets were one of the things he had started looking for when he had the chance to get new clothes, and the fact that he tended to layer what he did have only maximized the number of places he could squirrel away bits of nature to bring home.
"Yeah!" Or, he at least assumed he could. There was plenty of space in the car for a few more people, let alone Lorin, and Nell seemed to be excited that he was meeting people, so she shouldn't have a problem with it.... "And I think with two of us we could find even more stuff." Already his mind was reeling with ideas of where and what and how, and had turned slightly back towards where their guardians were, as if he were going to ask them if they could go now.
