Likes: Earako is very fixated on fashion, and making things beautiful. She loves to draw and paint, and is teaching herself to sew. She's very close to her father.
Dislikes: Bright lights, heat, being pale, rudeness.
Personality: Earako has reached a point where manners are very important to her. She tries very hard to be a lady, and can be overly polite at times. It's not unusual for her to correct her father's language, and she usually calls her elders 'Sir' and 'Ma'am'. Being respectful is very important to her. Friendly and open, she is a bit naive in her willingness to trust that everyone she meets will be good and friendly. She tries very hard to see the good in others, which unfortunately means she often misses the less favorable and dangerous qualities in those around her. Earako loves young children, and can often be found playing with the younger D-corp kids.
It's important to note, that while Earako does tend to fixate on the beautiful, she isn't traditionally vain. In fact, she considers herself to be very plain and boring in appearance. Her love for fashion began as an attempt to make herself more 'interesting' to look at, before blooming into a full fledged passion. Despite her own leaning toward black, Earako loves bright colours on others, and is quite envious of the more brilliant looking D-corp kids. |

Talents: Excellent shot, familiar with most guns. Good in hand to hand combat.

Favorite Colors: Black, dark blue, and gray.
Likes: Tred, Lithle, loud music, children.
Dislikes:Criminals, rules, disloyalty, and the overly leniant justice system.
Personality: For the most part, Michael seems like a pretty nice guy. He's laid back, and friendly, with a slightly cynical sense of humor. But there's definately something off putting, even dangerous about him. An edge to him that lays just beneath the surface.
That's the side of him that leads Tred. At heart, Michael isn't a laid back, easy going guy. He's a fanatic. Loyal to a fault, devoted to his pack of vigilanties, and absolutely protective of others. His view of the world is too often black and white and he believes that some must die so that the good might thrive. And he's not afraid to be the instrument of that justice. This allows him to be very good and protective to those he loves. And quick as a snake to turn on those who betray him. Disloyalty is NOT tolerated. |

Indigo:
Earako was incredibly impressed with Indigo when she met her. The girl's bright colours and willingness to 'tattoo' Earako were enough to win the young girl over. However, they haven't met since and she only barely remembers her.
Ligeia:
Earako has run into Ligeia repeatedly, and only likes him more each time they meet. She feels she's found a kindred spirit in him, and adores him for his willingness to talk about clothes and sewing. Because Ligeia isn't brightly coloured, she feels more comfortable around him than she does around most birds. Besides which, she adores his dragon Vorel.
Laial:
Earako isn't overly fond of Laial, but she doesn't hate him either. He rates as a neutral on her list, but she still remembers that the first time they met, he was screaming.
Chath:
Chath spilled on Earako's dress during manners class, and in Earako's world, that's quite an offense. However, he didn't mean to and it was at least partly her fault for screaming. And even if he did cover her mouth, he doesn't seem mean exactly. Earako's not sure exactly how she feels toward him. She wants to like him, but she can't help but be a little annoyed.
Anoki:
Anoki was the first D-corp kid Earako met. As a result, he holds a special place in her mind. They don't run into each other very often, but Earako wishes they did. They have the same kind of dragon, a fact tha she finds incredibly exciting. She's uncomfortable around his mom, and wishes Anoki wasn't stuck with her. Not that she'd ever say anything of the sort. Of course, Michael and Raven hate each other, which does present both children with a bit of difficulty.
Paxton: Earako is quite fond of Paxton. The love bird gifted Earako with her first kiss, and introduced her to the excitement of not doing what she's told. As a result, she's a bit confused about what exactly she's supposed to feel about him. She's not interested in him, but her rather weak information about the whole attraction thing means that she thinks she should be.
Keanu: Earako met Keanu as a kid, and has since encountered him in class. He calls her princess, and she finds that charming. Overall, she tends to look up with him, she likes his talk of being a hero, and his seeming bravery.
Gabby: A brief encounter at wingers left Earako with the impression that Gabby talks... a lot. That, and the firm belief that the bird was much prettier than her was about all that Earako decided.

Vampire Bat Facts

Vampire bats are bats that feed on blood (hematophagy). There are only three bat species that feed on blood: The Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus), the Hairy-legged Vampire Bat (Diphylla ecaudata), and the White-winged Vampire Bat (Diaemus youngi). All three species are native to the Americas, ranging from Mexico to Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. Contrary to popular belief, these bats rarely bite people because they apparently dislike human blood.
The three species are quite different from each other, and are therefore placed within different genera (no other species are currently classified in any of the three genera concerned). But they are related. In older literature, the three genera are placed within a family, Desmodontidae, but this is now regarded as unhelpful, as it hides the similarities the vampire bats have with other members of the American leaf-nosed bat family, Phyllostomidae. They are therefore now grouped as a subfamily, the Desmodontinae within the Phyllostomidae. The fact that the three known species of vampire bat all seem more similar to one another than any of them is to any other species suggests that sanguivory (feeding on blood) only evolved once, and that all three species share a common ancestor.
Unlike fruit-eating bats, the vampire bats have a short, conical muzzle without a nose leaf. Instead they have naked pads with U-shaped grooves at the tip. The common vampire bat also has specialised infrared sensors on its nose. A nucleus has been found in the brain of vampire bats that has a similar position and has similar histology to the infrared nucleus of infrared sensitive snakes.
They have small ears and a short tail membrane. Their front teeth are specialised for cutting and their back teeth are much smaller than in other bats. Their digestive systems are also specialised for their liquid diet. The saliva of vampire bats contains a substance, draculin, which prevents the victim's blood from clotting. They, therefore, lap blood rather than suck it as most people imagine.
They come out to feed only when it is fully dark. Like fruit-eating bats, and unlike insectivorous and fish-eating bats, they only emit low-energy sound pulses. The Common Vampire Bat feeds mostly on the blood of mammals, whereas the Hairy-legged Vampire Bat, and the White-winged Vampire Bat feed on the blood of birds. Once the common vampire bat locates a host, usually a sleeping mammal, they land and approach it on the ground. A recent study found that common vampire bats can, in addition to walking, run at speeds of up to 1.2 meters per second. They possibly locate a suitable place to bite using their infrared sensors.
The feeding pattern of the vampire bat adds a layer of complexity to its anatomy. Because they often do not find host organisms for many hours and may have to fly a long distance to do so, vampire bats usually feed in enormous quantities. This influx of proteins may make the bat too heavy to fly. Accordingly, the bat's urinary system accommodates this by releasing dilute urine consisting of a lot of water and fewer solutes. However, when the bat is resting, a new problem is faced. The large amounts of protein create excess urea and must be disposed of. The urinary system of the vampire bat then uses various hormones to make concentrated urine -- consisting of more urea and less water.
Vampire bats tend to live in almost completely dark places, such as caves, old wells, hollow trees, and buildings. Colonies can range from a single individual to thousands. They often roost with other species of bat. They need blood at least once every few days to survive. If they can't get blood, they'll approach another vampire bat whilst roosting, asking for a blood 'transfusion'. The blood is exchanged mouth-to-mouth in a motion that looks very much like kissing.
Vampire bats are common carriers of the deadly rabies virus which, aside from its danger to humans, is responsible for the deaths of many thousands of farm animals each year in tropical and sub-tropical America. However they do have some benifits, in a study which appeared in the January 10, 2003 issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, a genetically engineered drug called desmoteplase based on the saliva of Desmodus rotundus was shown to improve stroke patients. |
