Earako's questions as a result of this RP: Scouts Honor
Michael's Journal

She's growing up. I don't know how I've missed it until now, but now its impossible to miss now. Just looking at her, the way she walks, the way she holds herself with so much control. She's not a little girl anymore. She's...

I remember bringing her home even now. Small and delicate and fearful of the sun. I bought her icecream, and she smiled. And then I love her, as my daughter, because it was impossible not to love a child so sweet, so good at heart. I think maybe she saved whatever bits of my soul still lingered to be saved. She reminded me of why I do what I do.

But she's asking questions now. She asked me yesterday, in an absent, thoughtful voice, what a kiss meant. She asked me if she was only supposed to kiss people she loved. And then she looked at me, and in those red eyes I saw knowledge, or at least the start of it. I thought she was too young for that.

I've got to face this. She's nearly a teen. She'll be... screwing people soon. I can't deny it. She's beautiful, she's sweet.

I can only protect her by educating her. She's got to know what she's getting into, so she doesn't fall in love with the first a** that gets her dress off.

But I'll have Lithle do it. I want to pretend she's innocent, just a little longer.

Talking About Sex

Evenings in Lithle's household were usually quiet. The brats, if they were home, entertained themselves. Jer'ain cooked dinner, if she was in the mood, or painted. Savius read to Taylor or went out with some of his friends. Lithle did the sort of work for Tred that could be done, with no more than a computer and a wireless modem.

It was almost one of those evenings. Jer'ain had already put dinner in the oven, and now lounged on the couch, leaning against Savius as he gently preened her hair. They were over close for siblings, but in a house were all the love to be found had to come from them, it wasn't unusual. They both spoke in a language of touch, and Lithle thought Savius was most likely to blame for that. It was the bird in him.

Taylor was on the floor, playing with his book, sounding out words after each button he pushed. Lithle suspected he was teaching himself to read. A disturbing thought, for a kid so young, but how was she to know? He was the first one who'd been young around her. Jer'ain and Savius had both come to her pre-grown.

The difference came in Earako. Michael's child sat on the end of the couch, with Jer'ain's legs stretched over her lap. She was embroidering a pattern of delicate purple roses onto a black ribbon. Her dragon, Vimber, was curled up with Fen. The dog looked small against her, now. Vimber too, had grown.

And, that, of course, was the point. Earako was an elegant image of white skin and black lace, but where once her appearance had suggested innocence, it now had an edge of sensuality. The girl, in short, was growing up. And Michael had finally decided to face that fact. Or rather, to make her do the facing for him.

They were going to talk about sex.

"We're going to talk about sex." She announced, mentally preparing herself for what was to come, but not expecting the three equally blank stares she received. "Sex. ********, screwing, baby making. C'mon kids."

Earako's mouth turned down delicately, Jer'ain remained blank. Savius looked bored. "Oh. Mating. Why? You want more babies, Dad?"

"No. No more brats." And now Savius looked blank all over again. "Tonight's topic is how to screw without getting pregnant or diseased."

"People do that?" Savius again.

There were times when Lithle wished that she'd invested in a TV. Then this whole chat wouldn't be needed. How could her charges be so sheltered? Except, of course, that Jer'ain was a shut in, and Savius took only the vaguest interest in human interaction. And Earako… well Earako was probably too busy being polite to think of this sort of s**t.

Maybe Michael was right about talking to them, before someone ended up getting screwed without even realizing what the hell they were doing. But why her? Well, ********, where to start? They were staring at her.

"Does everyone at least know what sex is?" she asked, almost desperately. If she was going to have to go over the whole insert tab a into slot b s**t…

Savius nodded. Jer'ain leaned down to absently pet Taylor's hair. She seemed unaffected by the whole conversation.

"It's… umm," Earako looked down and blushed, "It's like kissing, but naked."

Lithle, quite suddenly, wanted to bury her head in her hands. "Fine, brats. Lets take this from the top."

Condoom

Earako could feel how red her cheeks were growing. Aunt Lithle was always hard to read, and now it was worse than ever. She was either very angry, or about to start laughing, and the bat had no idea which it might be. Had she been wrong then? But… well, that's what she'd heard. Kinda. Overheard, really.

"You've got three options, really." Lithle was saying, in her low growl. "Girls with boys, boys with boys, and girls with girls. The first has the most obvious dangers attached, but any of the three can kill you. Never trust a c**k, got it? You don't know where it's been. But the same goes for girl bits, so don't think you're safe just because you decide you dig chicks."

Earako was staring at her fingers. It wasn't that the bad words bothered her by themselves. But Lithle was talking about boys'… things. And how they fit with... girls' things. A glance up proved that Lithle was not only talking about boys' things, but gesturing. She certainly didn't want to see… gestures.

"Batbrat!" The word was snapped, and Earako's eyes jumped upward despite her desire to stare at the floor. "I'm not saying this twice, right?"

"Sorry."

Lithle dug into her bag on the floor and held a square of plastic up for them to see. It was green. "This is a condom. Prevents problems like that-" She gestured to Taylor, "And also guards against the sorts of s**t you can catch from people when you get too friendly."

"Condoom." Taylor submitted from his spot on the floor, glancing up from his book, and reaching for what Lithle was holding. Opening the thing, she tossed the wrapper at him. He laughed.

"You decide to ******** around with a boy, or, in your case Savius, if you decide to ******** anyone, you use one of these. It goes over the p***s, or they don't get to play, right?"

Silence.

"Right?" There was an edge to Lithle's voice.

"Ma'am?" Earako managed to get words through the utter mortification she was feeling. "I don't want to umm… ******** anyone. Can I go home, please?"

"No." Lithle's gray eyed gaze focused directly on her, and Earako was suddenly reminded that behind the dead steal of the woman's eyes, there was fire. That's why Savius liked her so much. He'd said so, once.

"Someday, batbrat, you'll meet some idiot, and they'll say the right things, and you'll be just stupid enough to believe them. They'll say it means you love them. And it may break your heart, but like hell am I going to let it ruin your life, you got it?

"Yes'm."

She shrank as far back into her chair as she could, leaning into Jer'ain's touch when her cousin reached out to gently rub her shoulder. Lithle didn't usually scare her. But today, she was terrified.

"Good. Now. This is a dental dam."

Revelations

Dad was explaining oral sex, and Savius was trying to keep his jaw from dropping. It all made so much sense now. So very much sense.

It wasn't that he hadn't known about mating. He'd been a bird once, after all. And sure, he hadn't taken part in it, but he'd seen it, and understood the function. But that was how he'd understood it, as a function. And as he hadn't been a true bird, he'd never felt the need to fulfill the function.

But Dad was explaining oral sex, and while Earako turned red, and Jer'ain tried to comfort her, all he could think was: So that was it. It was sex he'd wanted, when Xaxis had curled up, warm and lovely on his bed, had sucked on his fingers and slept cuddled against him. The wild, strange burn of it, the rush of feeling.

Sex.

He needed to find the Raven. He needed to find the Raven and explain exactly what it was they were supposed to have been doing all this time. It involved nudity, and touching, and sucking. He had some ideas on how to fill in the details too. Dad was being pretty sketchy, but oh, the ideas!

Savius was, to say the least inspired. And grinning like an idiot.

"What the hell is wrong with you, birdbrat?" Lithle actually went so far as to interrupt her third warning about the dangers of STDs to throw a pillow at him.

"Nothing, Dad." But he grinned at her as he said it. He couldn't help it.

The things he was going to do! With Xaxis of course, but who else? Not Iamel, that'd be wrong some how. Diacyn? Diacyn hated him. But he was so wonderfully… bald. It made one want to lick his head.

"Alright, let's wrap this up already." As she seemed to be done repeating herself, he looked up, and waited.

"Listen. Sex… it messes with you, ok? Screwing doesn't mean anything, but it can feel like it does. Don't confuse an orgasm with love, got it? For that matter, don't confuse love with an orgasm. Good partner will give you both."

"It's not wrong to have fun, but it's wrong to take fun seriously." A sigh meant she was tired, or tired of them, and Savius felt himself about to speak, interrupt, bring her back to life. But he didn't want to derail her.

"You can't trust people, brats. Especially the people you're screwing. You got each other. You got me, Michael. Outside that, who knows what you're dealing with?"

She stood then, and threw a handful of the condoms she'd so repeatedly and forcefully mentioned on the table.

"You all take some of those. I am going to go get drunk."

"Umm, Ma'am?" Earako was red from the tips of her ears down, and staring at the table, "Do we have-"

A growl.

"Yes ma'am." And a delicate hand reached out to sort through the condoms, which, for some reason, came in a variety of colors. The bat child took one of each.

"'rain, can I go home now?"

"V and I'll take you home." Jer'ain was reassuring. She always was.

He let his sister stand, and stood himself, taking a good handful of everything on the table for good measure.

"Don't worry about any of this, Pretty." He steered Earako toward the front door, petting her pale hair gently. "I'm sure it's not all as bad as she made it sound."

"It sounds so messy, though." Her response was a whisper, even lower than usual.

"Mmm."

Earako's Journal

Quote:

I didn't think it was like that. I didn't think it was like that at all. I don't know what I was thinking, not really. But that, all the things Aunt Lithle said, they just sounded gross. And people do it? People want to do it?

I think I understand people less now. I don't know why you'd think those thoughts or want those things. I just want friends. I just want to be nice to people. I don't think I ever want someone... someone like she talked about. Someone for... stuff.

I always thought that love was about other stuff. About, flowers and candles and I don't know, beaches.

I thought it was supposed to be nice.

Now I know.

I wish I didn't.

There's a lot of stuff I never really wanted to know.

The giftwrapping is a plain black velvet pouch, the kind some jewelry comes in, only larger. Inside that pouch is two smaller bags made of silk, one in light blue, the other bright red. In the first bag is a choker made of a thin sky blue satin ribbon threaded through the gaps in a piece of white cotton lace. Dangling from the center is a pendant in the shape of a silvery snowflake. The other bag contains a similar necklace, except the ribbon is crimson, the lace black, and the pendant a golden flame. There are two small cards in the velvet bag, one simply saying 'Earako,' the other 'Vimber,' but it is impossible to tell which card initially went with each gift.

At the very bottom of the bag is a single peppermint candy, to add a touch of sweetness to the gift- as well as having something for Earako to enjoy by herself.

Diary,

I saw Cleo the other day. She's so pretty, she's all feathers and smiles and color. I still wish I could be that way. I wish I was smiles and bright and shining and good. I'm not really like that. I try. But I'm just white and plain and it doesn't matter what I wear, it doesn't change.

I've been thinking about that, though. Maybe I'm thinking about clothes wrong. I make them for me, and I think maybe if they're pretty enough, I'll be pretty enough. But I'll never be pretty enough, I never will. I will always be white and plain and ugly.

But Cleo. You should see her. She's so bright. So I've been thinking, maybe that's what I should make clothes for. Not for myself, but for people who glitter and shine and who make clothes look good. Maybe clothes are like a vase, holding lovely flowers or weeds. Even the prettiest vase can't make a weed pretty. But think of how it might make roses look.

So that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to make pretty clothes, for pretty people. That's what I'll do when I grow up. I'll make beautiful people more beautiful. I want to help people shine, if I can't do it myself.

A Moment Between Sisters
Included for a Taste of Home Life

Tansi was sitting in the living room, playing with a pile of sparkling beads that her sister had allowed her to have. Daddy wasn't home, he was doing whatever it was that Daddy's did when they weren't paying attention to her. And really, the young passion flower girl couldn't even begin to conceive of anything that might be a legitimate reason for such neglect.

But she was okay. She had her pile of bright beads, and a string to string them on. She had music playing from somewhere, bright carnival music, and she had Vimber, curled up on the rug, almost too big for the house now. Daddy wasn't happy about that either, but Earako only lowered her head and look guilty whenever he brought it up.

And then he looked sad too, and shook his head, and said of course the dragon didn't have to sleep outside, even if there was a perfectly nice cave for it out there. And sometimes Vimber said things too. Dragons could talk, it was just that Vimber didn't talk very often to anyone but Earako.

So, she was sitting. And bead stringing, with Daddy away and Vimber on the rug. Earako was mostly in her room, but as Tansi struggled to get a sparkling blue bead onto the string her pale older sister walked out into the living room, out the front door, and returned with the mail.

"Oh, I had hoped it'd come today." She said, as she walked back in, a pile full of envelopes in her hand.

"Wha's comin'?" Tansi asked, hoping that it was more brightly colored beads, or maybe pretty fabrics that would be turned into a dress for her.

"Nothing important. But look Tansi. You got a letter."

Tansi immediately perked up at the prospect of mail, and forgetting about her beads, ran to her sister's side, anxious to see. It was an envelope that smelled of flowers with words on it that she couldn't read.

"Wha's it say?!" She demanded, stamping her foot a bit and frowning upward.

"It's... well, a suggestion, I guess." Earako patted her head absently, which she hated because she hated being treated absently, then read the letter outloud.

"I get a pet!" Tansi was overjoyed.

"It doesn't say that, Princess Tansi." The nickname made the flower girl smile, and forgive any absent head pattings. "You're gonna have to talk to Dad."

"Dad says yes." Tansi said, decisively, taking the letter out of Earako's hand despite her inability to read it.

Earako frowned, and looked at the dragon curled up in half the living room. "Yes, I guess he usually does."

D-corp,

Earako's almost a teen, and it shows. Her hair's about the same length, but she's gotten rid of the bangs. She still likes to wear it with ribbons and things. Her clothing style worries me. She still likes black, gothic s**t, but it's less, what's the word 'lolita'. Not all foofy, more form fitting. She wants to wear (and make) corsets now. She still wears long skirts, and lots of velvet and lace, she still likes long gloves. It's just a little... god... sexier. Sort of an 'ice queen of the damned' thing. Oh, and she still needs her sun glasses.

Vimber she likes to dress to match, with jewelry, mostly (fake) gold chains. That damn dragon is a nuisance, always snarling at anyone who gets close to Earako. At least I know my daughter is safe.

She's becoming a better fighter, at least from a distance. She's a good archer and a decent shot with a gun. She's also been practicing her throwing knives. Hates fighting up close though, and hates magic. When she isn't practicing, she's sewing. Girl loves to make beautiful things.

Most of the time, she's just shy and sweet and weirdly super polite. But... she gets scared around strangers, especially strange men. And when she gets scared, she goes all icy and distant. It's like her brain just leaves and her body operates on auto until they go away. I don't know why. I don't know how to fix it.
