It really didn't take much to recognize that the gleam in the eyes of the two males, the rising of the pulse and the slightly superior smirk as they dominated the stores was due to a classic case of shopoholicism.

JD liked to shop. He liked owning good things, buying in hard cash and knowing that others were watching him with envy. He knew he looked good, so he liked to parade himself around as well.

What delighted him was that the same shallow fascination seemed to exist in his new son, currently ... well, seven hours and forty minutes old. Their relationship, at any rate.

Having entered a store to buy jewellry, everything else was waiting for the both of them in the car. Or to be picked up by others at a later date. Carrying a single bag, JD was the first to walk into the cafe, and Narayan second.

Narayan, with his hand clenched tightly around the crimson back, his new silk shorts and vest still holding the scent of just-bought ness. Narayan, with his nose, and his ears and his tail, and feet too big for shoes. (Something that depressed JD immensly)

Narayan with his smile, who took a chair right across from his guardian, and nodded his head.

Yes, he was pleased with today.

Lunch.

Kyle could do lunch. What's the worst thing that could happen during lunch? Still, he couldn't help but be concerned. JD had been vague in the message he'd left, and in his experiance, that usually wasn't a good thing.

Still, it'd be nice to see him.

Isabel was at the 030 center, for another checkup, or something, but Earako, Michael's daughter, was with him. There were times when he wished he could find some free time, just for the two of them, but the young bat's company was always welcome.

And there, at the cafe, was JD. With a kid. A kid?

Wait, what?

"JD?"

JD looked up immediatly. Motioning to the waiter, he called out a order for coffee, juice for the brat. (Mango sounded good. Wait. Didn't elephants eat mangos?) and for the new kid too. His eyebrows rose in surprise. No. That wasn't another one of Kyle's kids. He was sure of that.

It was the other guys, right? The one that... with a scowl he tried to work it out, and realized he couldn't. They were all the same. Only things that were important to him stayed in his mind.

"Kyle." JD got up, crossing the distance and reaching the other man. It was a public place, and his son was burning holes in his back with his intent gaze. BUt this was Kyle, and Kyle fixed everything.

Almost.

"This is... Narayan." his voice held a touch of amusement, wariness. His family didn't know yet. How could he explain an elephant to his family? And this was... well. This was Kyle.

"I have a son." surprise, wryness. A touch of fear. "What am I supposed to do with it?"

Careless, speaking that way in front of the boy. But JD didn't really care right now. HE was here now.

Meanwhile Narayan stared around JD's form, and the other man. Flaties didn't really interest him much... boobies did, the human species with those soft things on their chest. They usually smelled good too. But he was staring at the girl. She was white. She was so white! And her dress looked pretty. Sliding out of his seat and slinking around the two men, he continued to stare.

"Whtre you?" he managed. "Narayan." he said, introducing himself, patting his chest proudly. His ears wiggled with delight at the name. Narayan.

At which point Vimber arrived. She'd fallen behind a bit, distracted by something shiny, and besides, Earako hadn't been paying attention. But as if she could sense the closeness of another being to her special one, she rushed around the corner, and was immediately at the pale girls side.

Hiss.

Kyle, of course, didn't notice. There was JD, giving him that look. Expectant. And... concerned? Yes. He remembered Isabel's revealing, and knew that he wouldn't let this shake them up so much. Not that it wasn't a shock, but he liked, LOVED children. And if the cute elephant boy was JD's, then he'd love him too.

Grabbing the other man, he pulled him into a tight hug, not minding the public place. He didn't much care about causing a scene. His clothes said that clearly enough. "Love him. They sorta take it from there." He murmured in the other man's ear, before releasing him.

"For now, maybe we should all have some lunch, and you can tell me what happened."

Earako stood watching Narayan, her interest distracting her from the grown ups. He had pretty clothes, though she bet she could make them even prettier. Absently scratching Vimber behind the horns (she was saying Hi, wasn't that cute?) she smiled at the boy, a gentle, almost wistful expression.

"Hello." Her voice was a measured whisper, sweet and carrying. "I'm Earako, and this is Vimber. She's a red dragon, and I'm a albino vampire bat from D-corp. Kyle's my uncle. Is he your uncle too?"

WHAT WAS THAT?! Narayan stared, just a small squeak smothered by a scowl as he stared at the big red thing. It was RED, and BIG. And it looked like it could eat people too!

Ooooooh.

Fear swiftly replaced by envy and desire, Narayan blinked, nose twitching in the half action similar to a hand reaching out to touch, and hesitating. Curling around itself again, he stopped.

And this thing talked alot. She reminded him of the boobies, except she was prettier with those big ears. Not as pretty as she could have been with a noise, but still pretty enough. Stopping and tilting his head as the words digested themselves a fraction later, he nodded. Showing that he understood.

Wait. Uncle?

His head spun around to watch the man again, more assessing. Well. He didn't seem to dress very well at all. And why had he been holding JD? Did he like hugs too? And why was the world so difficult to understand? Why? Why??

"Lunch sounds... good." JD said, clearing his throat and then staring at the dragon with a mixture of fascination and wariness. "D-Corp?" he said, and paused.

"Well. It seems Earaka and Narayan have something in common."

Ah, for the practiced bitter, ironic tone.

Vimber snorted, tossing her head and scooting slightly backwards, a movement that forced Earako to take a stumbing step back as well. She did not like this creature with his... existing... around her special one. She forgave the tall ones, because she had to, but even that was an effort.

The little one...

She could eat the little one.

Except it would make her special one unhappy.

"Huh. Imagine that." Giving JD a gentle push back toward a seat, Kyle gave the young boy an assessing look, before falling to one knee in front of him.

"Hi there. I'm Kyle, we're gonna be seein' a lot of each other. I hope we can be friends." He held out a hand toward the boy, to be shaken, or poked or otherwise explored. "You've got a good Dad, kid."

Narayan stared, alarmed. It was moving away! But he wanted one too. IT WAS SO RED AND SHINY!! He had seen the books with men and women on dragons, flying over burning cities. Wow. He could own the cities too, if he had something like that.

The talking of something like JD at him frown, looking up. It was hard for him to pay attention to what the man was saying however, because he wasn't a boobie-- boobies smelt good and looked nice, so he liked listening to them. And he looked kind of normal, compared to Rako. He liked Rako. And Vimber? Vimber.

Vimber vimber vimber vimber.

Staring at the hand, Narayan reached out to shake it with his own, tapping the top of it with his trunk in curiousness. Ew. It was hairy, and big. Not very nice compared to what boobies had.

Why couldn't JD introduce him to any of _those_ people?

And then he remembered. "Onka?" he asked. Rako had called him uncle, after all. What was a uncle anyways? And why would he have to see more of this man?

Hmmm. Maybe he would turn into one of those boobies in the future? Yes. That sounded much better then what was offered to him now.

"I'm sorry." JD said, apologizing immediatly. "Narayan has a short concentration span unless you're a woman." he smirked. Was that a hint of pride?

Yes, yes it was.

"Mmm... well, maybe I can make up for my gender if I buy him enough toys," Kyle replied. He sounded amused, not hurt, and casually mussed the boy's hair as he stood back up. "Uncle? Yeah, I guess that's fitting. I'm your Uncle Kyle."

Turning back to JD, he winked, "A lady killer like yourself, huh? Trouble when he gets older."

Earako ever polite, allowed Kyle to finish his conversation with Narayan before contributing more words of her own. She liked to make new friends, and if this one called Kyle uncle, that made them cousins. Savius was always saying that families had to take care of each other.

"Do you wanna pet Vimber?" She asked, scratching the dragon lightly behind her horns, completely ignorant of the unfriendly expression that she wore, and apparently incapible of hearing the low rumbling growl the red dragon made at the suggestion. "If you're from D-corp, you'll have a dragon too."

Narayan frowned, waiting for the hand to stop messing up his incredibly in hair style before carefully trying to smooth it back into place. Did that man not understand how long it took Narayan to get it to its casual wind blown appearance? It took long!!

JD in the meanwhile, snickered. "Why don't we order?" he suggested, grinning. Yes. Narayan wasn't what he had expected at first, but his personality... with the proud smirk of a man who had discovered a new source of entertainment, he nodded.

"Pet?" Why would you pet something like THAT? Scowling at the thought (it would eat him. Really. It would. It would eat him up and spit out his trunk... and then he would have to grow back from said trunk) he hesitated. He didn't want to look like a coward.

Besides.

This was pretty. And he wanted to impress pretty.

"Me too?" disctracted (cough cough) at the new suggestion, Narayan beamed, staring at the red dragon assessingly. Yes. His would be bigger. And meaner. And he could rule the world!

Maybe this one wasn't so bad...

"Want one now thank you please."

"Cool." Kyle responded to the suggestion that they order with a smile, picking up a menu to flip through. He didn't seem overly concerned with watching Earako. She was a responsible young bat, and while he didn't trust the dragon, he also knew she had it under control.

Maidens and unicorns, or something.

Besides, it allowed him to keep his attention on JD, and that was always a plus. He let himself watch the other man, and obviously, taking a moment just to appriciate what he had. What he had to hold onto. And now there was a child. All the better. Isabel could use another playmate. They'd be like a family, almost.

And he needed that.

Needed what he'd lost.

"Yes, pet. Her scales are soft, honest. And smooth." Earako demonstrated her point by running her hand lightly over Vimber, getting a low contented rumble for her trouble. The dragon still kept a wary eye on Narayan, but was willing to be a little distracted.

At the boy's 'request', she giggled, the high breathy sound full of amusement and enthusiasm. "They gotta give you an egg first. But don' worry, you'll get one. Just study hard, and listen to the teachers."

See? She was a good role model!

Study hard? Listen to teachers? What was this? With a sliding glance towards JD, (this was some big gigantic trap, wasn't it? To get him to work hard? Damn, these people were good...) Narayan stepped a little bit closer to the dragon.

Pretty. But scary too.

"Touch?" he asked politedly. He knew better than to piss off things bigger than him... it usually ended up with him getting hurt, one way or another. And he didn't want to get hurt today!

He'd just bought himself a present, and he wanted to wear it while he was still healthy. Looking up with a slight frown, he reached out with his hand. Normally, it'd be the nose.

But he was willing to sacrifice his hand for his nose, in case the big thing decided to eat him up.

Who needed two hands anyways?

For all her willful obliviousness, Earako put a very firm hand on the dragon's shoulder before responding to the young boy's request. Sure, Vimber was a sweet, loveable cuddly dragon. But she was a little... umm... grumpy at times.

Yeah, that was all, sometimes, she got grumpy.

"Of course you can touch. Vimber's a nice dragon." The 'nice' dragon looked between Earako and Narayan before lowering her head and letting the low rumbling growl stop. This one was too young to take her special one away. And if it would please her special one, she'd let him touch her.

Yes.

She could be tricky, she could. She knew her special one wanted to be nice to the little one, though she couldn't imagine why.

She knew her special one gave her shiny things, and that she didn't get them when she made the special one sad.

And biting made her sad.

So she lowered her head, and folded her wings, hiding teeth and pretending to be approachable.

For now, she would be.

Narayan stared at the dragon, wondering if maybe while he wasn't looking, one had replaced the other. This one seemed nicer, and for a moment, he hesitated. It was a trap! It had to be, because it was pretending to be nice and... touchable.

Narayan fell for it.

Reaching out hesitantly, he used his hand, deciding that if he had to have any bit of him bitten off, he would rather prefer to keep his nose. It was more useful than any part of his body.

"Pretty." he crooned, nodding his head. Maybe it'll help him keep his limbs in working order. And besides-- this dragon thing was. It was pretty! And then he beamed at Earako.

"Pretty too." he said, referring to her. She was! Not a very good representation of a boobie yet, but she was getting there. Maybe she'd be more boobie like later.

JD watched, and relaxed. It seemed that maybe his new son could handle people. That was a good thing... right?

The dragon submitted to the touch briefly, before growling a bit and jerking her head back. Even for forms sake, there was only so much Vimber would allow. And that limit had certainly been reached. Still, she made no attempt to snap at the boy, only made it clear that she wouldn't allow anything further.

Stupid Child. She hissed in her native language, knowing full well that neither her special one nor the boy would understand. Soon, she'd know both languages, and that would make everything clearer.

Maybe.

If she ever felt like bothering to learn.

Earako, apparently at least slightly aware of the dragon's shifting moods, stepped between the young boy and the red scaled wyrmling. "You can pet her again next time, ok? And when you have a dragon of your own, they can play together!"

Kyle seemingly amused by the whole production, shook his head. "Quite the flirt you've adopted, JD."

And then, of course, the food arrived, and he had other things to think about.

(Shall we call it closed, then?)
