Pre game history

A journeyman farmcrafter fell in love with a journeywoman beastcrafter, they married both aged twenty two, and the jourenywoman left her craft to make a home for them and their future children. They had a daughter the next turn, a son two turns after that, and another daughter another turn later. Shortly after the birth of the second daughter, the first took a winter fever and passed away. Having lost one child the couple invested all the more love in their remaining son and daughter, had all the more dreams for them. The son would become a master craftsman - beast or farm for preference though harper fitted their daydreams as well - and their daughter would grow up into a kind, brave, and dutiful woman who would marry well and have many beautiful children. The son grew up pretty well as planned, and left to pursue his craft at the age of thirteen. The daughter... well she was certainly pretty, and diligent about completing the chores she was given but she wrinkled her nose at the mention of marrying and having children; why would she want to do that?

When she hit puberty her parents were sure it would all sort itself out; she was turning into the perfect beauty, and surely her maternal instincts would kick in soon. As it turned out, they didn’t. As the girl - Kleos - began to realise she preferred girls to boys she began to withdraw from her parents, and even to resent them for pressuring her into a life she had no interest in. She asked to be sent off to a crafthall, but they refused to release her. She grew angrier after that, and called her parents bitter names like jailor and heartless Thread-spawn. When she was caught kissing the neighbour’s daughter aged sixteen things really came to a head; her parents held very traditional views on sexuality and were horrified that their little girl was turning out this way. They loved her as much as they ever had but were afraid she would ruin herself if they didn’t make her leave her immoral ways behind; they had to do something quickly. She was not allowed to leave the house without permission from then on, and informed that a husband was being found for her. In an act of rebellion, she took a sharp blade from the kitchen and hacked off the fine blonde hair that her parents had encouraged her to grow out ever since she could remember; she would be nobody’s trophy wife.

Her attitude didn’t exactly make it easy to find a match for her; she was a harsh to the suitors her parents brought to meet her as she was with them, demanding of them how they would sleep at night knowing they had denied another person their freedom. Half way through her sixteenth turn things were going from bad to worse and her parents were beginning to despair. Their salvation came in the form of a Searchrider from Malvren Weyr. Kleos along with a young lad were identified as suitable candidates, and asked to say their goodbyes. The last place Kleos’ parents wanted her to go was a Weyr; everyone knew what immoral practices they condoned... But then their daughter turned to them and fell to her knees, pleading for her release. At a Weyr she would be too far away to be a disgrace to them, and at a Weyr she could be happy, something she could hardly remember being since she realised she could never fall in love with a man. Though they were frustrated with her, angry with her for her obtuseness and defiance, her parents loved her still and could not bear to see her so unhappy. Reluctantly, they gave their permission for her to depart and within a candlemark she was on the back of dragon, looking down at Malvren Weyr.

Around half a turn has passed since her arrival at Malvren, and Kleos became as happy as she had hoped she would be. She strives to be the best she can be at everything, and when she falls into her bunk at night she dreams of a future on dragonback. Perhaps she can never be what her parents wanted her to be, but she hopes to earn their respect as a defender of Pern in time.

Kleos

Basics

Age: Twenty-four
Sex: Female
Orientation: Homosexual
Rank: Wingirder

Appearance

Height: 5'9"
Build: Curvy with lithe muscle
Hair: Platinum blonde, fine and straight, ~2" long
Eyes: Bright green
Skin: Quite pale
Face: High cheekboned, full lipped, scarred

Detailed appearance: She must have been beautiful, once upon a time. She is quite tall for a woman, long limbed, supplely muscled with curves to die for and bright green eyes. Her cheekbones are high and defined without making her gaunt, her lips are full, her eyebrows arch elegantly... and the right side of her face is a burned and twisted mess. The Threascore begins just below her eye and runs all the way down her once fine face, over the formerly smooth line of her jaw and down her no longer so elegant neck where it vanishes beneath her clothes.

It isn’t only the scarring that betrays her as a woman of action rather than a lady of leisure: her hair is a beautiful shade of platinum blonde, wonderfully soft and perfectly straight but she wears it short, usually around two inches long. Her nails are kept short too, and although it would be her choice in any case this seems to be because she bites them rather a lot. A lot of her wardrobe is made up of tough practical leather britches and jerkins with simple shirts underneath that are either the natural colour of the fibre they are made from or dyed in muted hues. She binds her breasts most of the time too to make it comfortable to run and other such practical things, and so while her generous hips are obvious to all the only people who will be aware of her considerable bosom are those who catch her in the baths. These people will also be able to see the full extent of her scars: the twisted flesh runs all the way down her right side to her hip.

All in all while she was beautiful once upon a time there are few who would consider her so now. There might, however, be a few who consider her somewhat dashing.

Personality

Likes: Moriath, beautiful ladies (especially Moriath), succeeding, justice, being in charge
Dislikes: Taking orders, injustice, being called a man, being called a girl or a chick, failing
Quote:
Character tracks: Man of La Mancha

Extended personality: Kleos is a fighter through and through; she has a strong moral compass and sticks by her beliefs come what may. So far as intelligence goes she’s more or less average, but she possesses a good deal more common sense than most, and is good at seeing patterns, and finding solutions to physical problems. She can be relied on to keep her word and do her duty, but she is outspoken and doesn’t hesitate to question authority if she feels they’re in the wrong. Similarly, she will point blank refuse to do something she feels is unjust no matter how much trouble she might get into for not following orders. Speaking of orders, she’s not too fond of them; she’d much rather be the one giving them out than receiving them, at least in part because she doesn’t feel many leaders live up to her personal code of honour and morality. As can be deduced from this attitude, Kleos is proud and while she has never been vain in the classical sense she is very satisfied with her personality, were it physical she would certainly admire it in a mirror. She’s courageous, determined, and noble after all; what’s not to like about her? Perhaps her harshness for starters; justice is not always kindness, she calls people out on the slightest wrong and makes sure the whole world hears about it.

Another problem would be that massive pride; she’s sure that nobody else is quite as good and noble as she is, and while she never says so aloud it is quite clear in her manner that she thinks she’s one of the most shining examples of humanity alive. Egotistical though her attitude might be, nobody could deny that she truly is a decent person; not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but basically good-hearted. She’s in the corner of anyone who she believes is being oppressed, unfairly ignored, or otherwise mistreated; her own wellbeing, and her good sense, take a back seat. She’d rather die than abandon a cause or a comrade in need and is impossible to bribe or blackmail; her honour (and ego) wouldn’t allow it. Her high standards and the passion with which she strives to live up to them make her a pretty forceful person to deal with, and while some might like and admire her drive and passion, just as many will probably find it a bit much to deal with every day and avoid close association with her. Seriously? Who goes on like that all the time? Who does she think she is, the savior of the world? With Kleos’s pride, she just might.

When she gets stressed Kleos bites her nails, and as the state of them suggests she gets stressed quite a lot. Not only are her standards of morality high, all her standards are and she devotes a huge amount of her time an energy to trying to live up to them. She might quite sure that’s she’s one of the best and most noble people around, but she doesn’t have the same confidence in her abilities to succeed in her studies and so on. In the end she usually falls short of what she wants to achieve, because she’d really like to be the very best at everything. She can never forgive herself for failing, and each time she does she pushes herself harder and harder. Without a good friend to reassure her she isn’t a failure and to force her to ease off a little, she will push herself to breaking point. After she calms down (or recovers from cracking up) she is no less driven, but her efforts return to being determined and diligent rather than desperate and frantic. In these times of greater calm she is aware that she can never be the best at everything, and had better settle for being the best she can be. Before too long however some challenge or other will arise to set the whole cycle off again; while Kleos can learn from most mistakes, this is one kind of idiocy she might never overcome.

Kleos’s gender identity is very important to her; she can’t stand being called a man or a guy, but she hates being called a girl just as much, and anyone who calls her a chick is really in for it. What she is, is a woman; she’ll happily admit to being a tough one - and perhaps androgynous of temperament - but she does not and never has wished she’d been born male; behaving as though she does just because she wouldn’t be seen dead in a skirt is hugely insulting to her. She also takes very poorly to insults or being told she’s wrong, and accepts correction only very grudgingly, and only when there is a lot of evidence weighing against her point of view. If the offender is a pretty girl however, she’ll probably let the matter slide. Yes, Kleos really loves the ladies, the pretty ladies that is. She has a bad habit of coddling them given half a chance, which often either leads to them getting annoyed with her for trying to help them with their work too much, or to them taking advantage of her and sitting back while she gets on with it. Similarly, while she’ll happily defend anyone at all if she thinks they’re being treated unfairly, she is especially defensive of beautiful ladies. Even more than pretty girls however she is protective of her friends and would do anything they asked of her, provided it doesn’t violate her morals in any case. If one of her friends does something she believes is wrong she will firstly be very angry with them and then she will demand that they own up, take their punishment, and generally make amends before she will call them friend again.

Moriath

Sr. weyrling image
Adult

Appearance

Moriath has grown into quite a giant of a crimson, just about equalling the size of an average brown. She's grown into a brown's build too; she's a muscular dragon with excellent endurance. While she manages to keep her movements collected and graceful, however, she is far from the fastest or most agile dragon in the sky but she doesn't mind that, after all fantastic aerial stunts are the territory of greens!

Without fail, every inch of her red hide is scrubbed, oiled and generally pampered to perfection, but even the most diligent oiling doesn't hide the scars that run down her right side. From mid way down her neck to mid way down her flank is a network of twisting Threadscore and she has a fairly large number of scars that look to have come from the teeth and claws of other dragonkin but the marks don't seem to bother her at all: she wears them with pride, and clearly still considers herself supremely lovely.

Personality

Likes: Moriath, Kleos, succeeding, me time, banter
Dislikes: Taking orders, stupid uppity males
Quote:
Character tracks:

Extended personality: The hierarchy of the Weyr is very clear in Moriath's mind; it goes Moriath, other crimsons, typically coloured female dragons, atypical male dragons, and then typical male dragons right at the bottom. Whites, well, they either fit in with crimsons or with other atypicals, depending on whether they identify as male or as female. She's fairly sure that between the three colours of female dragon they could run the Weyr and fight the Thread without any problems at all; with agile greens and powerful crimsons with a queen wing below who needs anything more? She'll admit that they need a few bronzes or perhaps browns for breeding, but that's just about all. She isn't afraid to let others know her opinions either, she will almost always address or refer to males with either contempt or condescending tolerance depending on the situation: it would take an awful lot to make a male impress her, let alone to make her admit it. Male humans are treated more or less the same as typically coloured male dragons, and she would only directly address one under the most dire of circumstances. When a female dragon chooses a male rider, they go down a little in her estimation, and she will often be heard asking them what in the name of the first egg they were thinking when they chose a male over a female. While she's smart enough not to, for say, talk down to the weyrleader's dragon or to badmouth his rider, she will give the draconic equivalent of an eye roll when she hears either of them giving orders.

This said, however, you can guarantee that should a dragon from another Weyr insult a male of hers, she will be one of the first to leap to his defense; he might be a male but he's a Malvren male, and that makes him far superior to one from anywhere else in the world. Her prejudices show through again in how she will deal with the situation depending on who has spoken; crimsons from other Weyrs she will deal with firmly but politely, whereas if a typical male insulted somebody from Malvren she would do her best to tear them to verbal shreds. Speaking of 'her' Weyr, she really does see it that way. There is no doubt in her mind that she is the best, and while she knows she will never run the place she nevertheless feels that it is hers and doesn't hesitate to let everyone around her know what she thinks ought to be done for the place. Given the chance she would love to share her opinions with the senior gold, politely of course given that she's talking to another female, but if she had a point she wanted to get across she wouldn't give up until she was very firmly told to back off and shut up.

As an arrogant dragon Moriath really does believe that she can solve everybody's problems the best, and not only does she believe she can, she wants to. This comes partially from her belief that if she doesn't fix it it won't get fixed, partially from a desire to show how wonderful she is, and partially from a genuine desire to see the people around her happy. Yes, even the lowly males; they might not be as good as she and her fellow females are, but they're still Malvren dragons, and they deserve to be happy. There is no end to the things she'll try to get people to let her help with; from giving relationship advice to flying the last bit of a long patrol for some poor small dragon who can't quite last out comfortably, Moriath has her nose in your issues whether you like it or not. Telling her to butt out doesn't go down desperately well, and again her prejudice affects her reaction; males will usually get snapped at and told they're ungrateful little whers, whereas females will usually just sniffily be told they're making a mistake.

If she does manage to get somebody to accept her help with something, she will not give in until she solves the issue one way or another. Failure is not an option so far as Moriath is concerned, and if she has to work all day every day for a month to fix the problem, or to reach a personal goal, she will do so. It should be noted, however, that while she'll work all day, she won't work through the night. Moriath adores her personal time for rest and relaxation, and come Thread or high water she will find at least a candlemark a day to set aside all of her worries and indulge in a relaxing flight or some time in the sun. After all, amazing dragon that she is, she'll get everything sorted in the end so there's really no point in pushing herself so hard that she gets frazzled; that would probably just make everything take longer in the end anyway.

All of her arrogance and prejudice can make Moriath a rather difficult dragon to get along with; she has a quick wit which many might find pleasing, but equally for many this might not balance out her other traits enough to make friendship worthwhile. She seldom outright states that she thinks she's the best, brightest, most capable dragon around but her manner and tone often make it obvious that she thinks she could have done better at whatever it was you just did. Her drive to be the best and belief that she is the best anyway makes her hold herself to very high standards, but if she seems to be failing she will shrug it off and just keep working, assuming she'll get it right in the end. The standards she holds others to vary depend, as ever, on colour and sex. If a crimson fails at something she will be rather disappointed and saddened for them, but if a brown failed at the same thing she would snort in amusement and shrug her wings: what did you expect from a male? Even other crimsons are not held to the standards she holds herself to, however, and as such when one bests her she is mildly surprised. Any other dragon besting her will surprise her by greater and greater degrees, and if she's outright bested by a typical male she will either fail to accept it, or assume they must have had a female do most of the work for them or something.

Proud and confident as she is there is very little that worries Moriath, but the one thing that will preoccupy her as a dragonet is the choice she faces in the future; to breed or to fight Thread, should it return in her lifetime. On the one hand producing eggs is is the duty of females who are capable of it, and she is sure that she would produce very fine eggs indeed. On the other hand however, as she begins to grow it will become clear that though she will be slow, she will be a large, powerful dragon once she is an adult; a valuable asset against the Thread, and more to the point with a distant shot at rank. Taking orders from males, or having them think themselves better than she, really rubs Moriath the wrong way and though if she were breeding she would fly in a queen wing and not directly answer to wingleaders and seconds she would love to prove to the Weyr that a female can command just as well (better in fact, in her mind) than any male. Though she's usually the kind to make decisions quickly and easily, this one will hang over her head right up until the last moment.

Why Kleos?

These are two very proud, very driven females who will strive until their last breath to achieve their goals. Moriath, however, is more confident in her ability to succeed than Kleos, and will always assure her bonded that they'll get there in the end. Though this won't completely keep Kleos from driving herself like mad and beating herself up when she fails, over time it will take the edge off these traits, and bring some semblance of balance to her working routine. The pair also share a dislike of taking orders, and will work together to get into a position where they have to take as few as possible one way or another. While both can come off as very arrogant at times, it is more obvious with Moriath, and so it will often be left to Kleos to be the more diplomatic of the pair as she's actually willing to admit when she's been bested no matter how much she hates it. Another factor that drew Moriath to Kleos is the fact that there will never be males deeply entwined in their lives, at least not for longer than it takes for them to shake off whoever caught Moriath when she begins to rise. Finally, both rider and dragon also enjoy helping the people around them, and both are motivated partially out of a desire to feed their ego, and partially out of genuine compassion; neither could have lived with a heartless partner, but equally each needed somebody who could accept their arrogance, and certainty that they are truly superb individuals.

History

Kleos found Ice on the beach whilst out for a walk shortly before the Touching of the clutch she would later Impress in. The blue flitt seemed to be a few days old and was hungry, lost, and scared; what became of his mother and clutchmates was unclear. It was clear, however, that the weakened flitt wasn't going to survive on his own and so Kleos took him back to the Weyr and fed him, thus impressing him and earning his undying and unquestioning devotion.

Personality

Ice adores Kleos; he is absolutely and totally besotted with her and does his best to please her at every turn. He has mastered the idea of coming when she calls, fetching things for her, and putting down things he shouldn't have but anything more complex than that is beyond him. He is a sweet and friendly flitt, happy to be stroked by anyone just so long as he isn't being kept away from Kleos. He doesn't mind being away from his mistress so long as he knows he can rejoin her in an instant, but if he is told to stay put and not go to her he gets extremely distressed. Once he is allowed to be with her again he will be extremely clingy until he forgets about the incident which can take anything from a few days, to a few seconds if he is distracted from his unhappiness by something shiny.

User Image

History

Moss is Ice's daughter, or so Kleos believes; she knows he caught a green, and not long after that the green's owner discovered a small clutch of eggs in her living space. Kleos took one of the eggs, and a few sevendays later it hatched into Moss.

Personality

Moss is an adventerous little soul; she'll poke her nose into anything, and can vanish from Kelos' side for days at a time if she's found something interesting to do. While she isn't really very loyal, when she is around her mistress she's very affectionate. Other than exploring, Moss' greatest love is male flitts; she rises a lot more than most greens do, but has yet to lay a clutch anywhere Kleos can find.

Moriath.

My Moriath.

It hasn't really sunk in yet.

Her back is the colour of blood, her belly is rosy, and she looks at me with eyes of the brightest green.

She is perfect.

We are perfect.

She's sleeping now, exhausted by the effort of reaching our bunk, but I know she'll wake soon for food and oiling. From this day onward, everything is for her. I will work harder than I have ever worked to make sure she stays healthy, I will learn every lesson as perfectly as I possibly can to prove myself worthy of her, and I will conduct myself in a manner befitting the rider of such a glorious dragon.

I will never be alone again.

I can't wait to tell my parents.

The Masterhealer from Benden arrived yesterday; he came here to ask us questions about our dragons. I have just left my interview with him, and I have plenty to wonder about. These are the questions he asked me:

1. What is your opinion of the Hatching and Hatchlings that were produced?
2. How healthy is your dragon?
3. How are you caring for your dragon?
4. Does anything special stand out about how Hatchings are handled?
5. Does anything special stand out about how Flights are handled?
6. Are there any illnesses your dragon is more prone to suffering from?

I didn't have much to tell him, other than the fact that Moriath is weaker at the moment than a standard dragonet would be. I also made sure he knew what I thought of Benden's practice of not giving atypicals a chance to so much as hatch...

I know he won't take that on board so there's no sense in my dwelling on it. What I must consider, however, is his purpose here. Rumors are flying, the favored theories are either a request for another gold transfer, interest in how Feynath has managed to clutch so many golds, or relations between our Weyrs going so sour that the leaders just wont communicate face to face anymore. I'm not sure which theory I favor, perhaps the second; Feynath does seem to be producing an exceptional number of Queens.

Still, I don't have too much time for idle gossip or pondering right now; Moriath still demands every moment of my time. I am happy to give it to her, of course, but that does not change the fact that I'm more exhausted than I can ever remember being in my life. I do hope she will be stronger by the time her growth spurt really hits; I'm not sure I could cope if she's still frail.

Moriath is growing like mad, but at least not as fast as Cavenath. She's strong now though, she doesn't seem to tire any more easily than her typical siblings. The danger of her becoming ill or hurting herself are still greater, I believe, but some of my fears are lessening as she puts on length and bulk. Quite a lot of it, really; she's not going to be a delicate flower, the weyrlingmaster reckons she'll match browns for size when she's full grown. I like that idea, it would give us a shot at becoming wingseconds, or even leaders if prejudice doesn't go against us...

And if she chooses that path.

It has to be her choice in the end, to flame or to clutch. I don't want to influence her but... but I don't want to be of use only when a male catches her, and she actually has eggs from the union. I don't want her to rise at all really, I don't want to be with a man. I know it's only a flight, but the idea still makes me shudder. I suppose I'll get used to it. I hope she chooses to flame.

A crimson of Trine was slain right beside her clutch by a Benden bronze. Her rider killed herself days later. Today it is some time after that awful event; we attended their funeral service. It was truly beautiful, but that could not erase the sadness of the event. For one dragon to kill another, and for it to be one of those Benden dragon who invaded Trine uninvited. The masterhealer who questioned me so long ago now suddenly seems less annoying and more sinister.

Still, I suppose something good came from the day; we met a new crimson rider pair, the crimson being one of Alumath's daughters. It cheered me to see another young woman with a passionate young dragon, I hope Hers grows as well as Moriath has.

"That can hardly be expected of her, but I am sure she will grow up to be the best of the two clutches. There is of course the crimson born to the gold, but she chose a male rider sadly."

Yes... Well, in any case, I should like to see the pair of them again some day, to find out how they develop... I wonder what their choice shall be.

"Mmm... I still need to make that choice myself."

Yes. Yes, you do...
